Ultrasonic Evaluation of Adhesive Coverage in Bonded Joints using a 2D array Technique

An ultrasonic nondestructive technique capable of robust evaluation of adhesive coverage in bonded metal sheets is presented. Several signal processing techniques for detecting the presence of adhesive between the sheets using pulse-echo data from joints are analyzed. It is shown that an algorithm based on the energy of the reflected waveform weighted within a certain time gate is an efficient and robust parameter for discrimination between adhesion and no adhesion areas. This algorithm was applied using a matrix array of small flat ultrasonic transducers for 2D visualization of adhesive distribution under the metal sheet and estimation of bond width. The developed technique has been successfully tested in laboratory and industrial environments. Accuracy of the adhesive width measurements, conducted in automotive plants on production parts, was shown to be 96% in matching the teardown measurements within 1 mm.

The Live Volumetric Imaging (LVI) catheter is capable of real-time 3D intracardiac echo (ICE) imaging, uniquely providing full volume sectors with deep penetration depth and high volume frame rate. The key enabling technology in this catheter is an integrated piezoelectric micromachined ultrasound transducer (pMUT), a novel matrix phased array transducer fabricated using semiconductor microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) manufacturing techniques. This technology innovation may enable better image guidance to improve accuracy, reduce risk, and reduce procedure time for transcatheter intracardiac therapies which are currently done with limited direct visualization of the endocardial tissue. Envisioned applications for LVI include intraprocedural image guidance of cardiac ablation therapies as well as transcatheter mitral and aortic valve repair. (C) 2013 Elsevier Inc. A method of imaging of a flat reflector with a smooth boundary using two-dimensional array of ultra-wavelength transducers has been developed. The method is based on the comparison of the amplitudes of the echoes received by the elements of the array with the step response of the element and the reconstruction of the reflector's boundary. The proposed method has been experimentally tested using the 15 MHz matrix array. The error of the measured diameter of the test hole in steel foil was found to be significantly lower than the pitch of the array. Also, the proposed technique was applied for measurement of the nugget size in the spot welds.

Analysis of characteristics of grating lobes generated with Gaussian pulse excitation by ultrasonic 2-D array transducer

Characteristics of ultrasonic beams generated by two-dimensional periodic array transducers have been analyzed through simulations based on the Rayleigh-Sommerfeld model. An excitation waveform is treated as a Gaussian pulse in the simulations with an enhanced model for a continuous wave. Acoustical fields for focal beams, waveforms and spectra are calculated and compared among Gaussian pulses with various pulse lengths. Theoretical generation conditions for propagation directions of grating lobes with the center frequency of the excitation waveform are derived from the first order term of the delay law for an angled focal beam. The theoretical results show good agreement with the simulations. Furthermore, the theoretical condition expressions are extended for high-frequency grating lobes as a specific phenomenon for short pulse excitation. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Having previously presented a system for simultaneous 3D ultrasound imaging via both temporal bone acoustic windows, we take advantage of this system's scanning geometry to allow each matrix array to serve as a correction source for the opposing array. Aberration is estimated using cross-correlation of RF channel signals followed by least squares solution of the resulting overdetermined system. Delay maps are updated and real-time 3D scanning resumes. Saved volumes are also registered and fused offline. Mean residual error for this technique is 11.2 ns for 75 ns electronic aberrators. We also present results showing the efficacy of this technique for correcting physical and in vivo aberration.

Dexterous manipulation of objects in travelling wave beams can be achieved by modulating the phase profile of a coherent source to generate reconfigurable and complex interference patterns that can impart momentum on objects in the field. In this paper we use a commercially available matrix array operating at 550 kHz to generate helical ultrasonic beams to demonstrate the complexity of beam shapes that can be achieved from a system with approximately 1000 elements. Helical ultrasonic beams carry orbital angular momentum, due to the inclination of the wavefront, that increases with vorticity, or number of intertwined helices. The beams are used to both levitate and rotate a 100 mm diameter disk of acoustic absorber material in a water-filled chamber above the matrix array. The observed levitation of the absorber decreases with increasing vorticity because of the inclination of the wavefront away from the beam axis. The angular momentum transferred to the absorber increases with both the vorticity and the power of the ultrasonic beam. There was no evidence of aliasing of phase pattern applied to the array even with vorticity greater than 10, demonstrating the capability of a matrix array system for dexterous manipulation of objects with ultrasonic beams.

In response to the high prevalence of stroke, we propose a system for scanning simultaneously via both temporal bone windows. The characteristics of this window and system limitations guide the design of custom matrix arrays. We present operational arrays with a 7 dB increase in SNR made possible by an interconnect system that integrates the probes directly into the scanner, eliminating the lengthy cable common to most probes. In vivo volumes with color flow have been acquired using this system without contrast enhancement. Future transcranial array design improvements have also been illuminated by this process.

THE ABILITY TO perform and interpret a comprehensive 2-dimensional transesophageal echocardiographic (2D-TEE) examination is a cornerstone to the modern-day practice of cardiac anesthesia and is- inherently linked to the subspecialty. As with most technologies, echocardiography has seen numerous advancements evolve over time. The most significant of these advances that have occurred over the course of the past 50 years includes the progression from 1 (spatial)-dimensional imaging (A- and M-mode) to that of 2-dimensional (2D) imaging, as is currently in use today. The introduction of Doppler technology has enabled the echocardiographer to not only obtain anatomic images (2D imaging) but physiologic information as well. Spectral Doppler is used to evaluate flow velocities, which, in turn, enable the calculation of pressure gradients and flow volumes. Color-flow Doppler, which facilitates the imaging of shunts, is used to map spatial blood flow movement. This capability improves the interpretation of valvular lesions and the recognition of turbulent flow patterns.

This paper will present several innovative applications of phased array technology,offering even more flexibility and increased inspection performance to the *** will be illustrated how the recently developed DYNARAY phased array hardware and the new UltraVision 3 software can support these innovative phased array inspection *** instance,2D matrix arrays with a large number of active elements can be used to perform one-pass weld inspections while simultaneously searching for various flaw ***, position dependant focal law groups can be used to perform high-quality inspections on rough and wavy surfaces. The presented case studies will include considerations about phased array probe design,selection and generation of focal laws,inspection coverage and inspection performance.
