In the pursuit of robust object tracking, both particle filter and mean-shift algorithm have proven successful approaches. Also both of them have weaknesses. The article presents the integration of mean-shift algorithm with particle filtering during the moving object tracking. In our method mean-shift algorithm is used in the sampling steps of particle filtering, which efficiently reduces the number of sampled particles. That integrates the advantages of mean-shift algorithm and particle filtering. When applied in the moving object tracking, our method proved to be more robust and time saving compared with the conventional particle filtering and mean shift algorithm.

Tracking moving target from image or video sequence is a hot research topic in computer vision. An algorithm based on LogGabor wavelet and mean-shift has been proposed for moving target tracking under fixed camera setting and complicated environment. Phase coherency of LogGabor wavelet facilitates to extract the edge of moving target and check noise. According to the edge detection,the starting location of mean-shift can be estimated using the target center coordinate. Eventually,a real-time moving target can be extracted by doing iterative matching pursuit,and experimental results proved the effectiveness of the method proposed.

This paper presents an image up-scaling based approach to improving the quality of image segmentation that uses linked mean-shift vectors [6]. While already effective, the segmentation quality of [6] can be further improved by strengthening the approximation process it uses. Making up for the weakness, the proposed algorithm remarkably outperformed existing competitor algorithms in segmentation quality by Probabilistic Rand Index [8] and Segmentation Covering [9] for Berkeley Segmentation Dataset [7].

A method is proposed for estimating two illuminant spectral power distributions from the highlights of overlapping illuminants on an object. It was assumed in most previous studies that specular highlights on object surfaces are caused by a single light source, or by separate multiple light sources. In this paper, we assume that two highlights from different light sources are overlapped on object surfaces, and estimate the spectral power distributions of both. A multiband camera system is used for capturing spectral images of dielectric objects in a scene. First, we detect specular highlight areas from the spectral image. Then, the illuminant spectra of two light sources are simultaneously estimated based on cluster classification of particular pixel distribution in the highlight area. The feasibility of the proposed method is examined in experiments on real-world scenes.

In order to solve the scale and rotation problem in target tracking, a target tracking algorithm based on scale invariant feature transform and mean shift is proposed. First, template area and the target area in the extreme value point of scale space are detected ,then accurate position and scale of the feature point are detected through the simulation of three dimensional quadratic function,after that feature points of the target area and template area are matched,and error matching is removed according to the continuity of scale and angle between adjacent frame. The experimental results show that the algorithm has good tracking performance when targets angle and scale changed.

Rich Intrinsic Image Decomposition of Outdoor Scenes from Multiple Views

Intrinsic images aim at separating an image into its reflectance and illumination components to facilitate further analysis or manipulation. This separation is severely ill posed and the most successful methods rely on user indications or precise geometry to resolve the ambiguities inherent to this problem. In this paper, we propose a method to estimate intrinsic images from multiple views of an outdoor scene without the need for precise geometry and with a few manual steps to calibrate the input. We use multiview stereo to automatically reconstruct a 3D point cloud of the scene. Although this point cloud is sparse and incomplete, we show that it provides the necessary information to compute plausible sky and indirect illumination at each 3D point. We then introduce an optimization method to estimate sun visibility over the point cloud. This algorithm compensates for the lack of accurate geometry and allows the extraction of precise shadows in the final image. We finally propagate the information computed over the sparse point cloud to every pixel in the photograph using image-guided propagation. Our propagation not only separates reflectance from illumination, but also decomposes the illumination into a sun, sky, and indirect layer. This rich decomposition allows novel image manipulations as demonstrated by our results.

Rice-ducks fed in rice paddies for farming are preyed frequently by injurious birds such as crows. The aims of this study are to detect crows' predation-motion by using time-varying image processing techniques, and to prevent the crows' predation by driving the pest control system adaptively. In this study, we employ a well-known mean-shift algorithm for motion detection. In order to drive the equipments adaptively and adequately, a quick detection response to the crow's motion in the mean-shift algorithm is required. For realization of its quick detection response, we modify the mean-shift algorithm by using the preset color histogram calculated from the previous scenes. By the actual experiments, it is verified that the detection response of the mean-shift algorithm is improved by the preset color histogram while keeping the fundamental tracking performance.

Experimental study of pedestrian behaviors in a corridor based on digital image processing

Evacuation experiments of pedestrians passing through a corridor, which acts as a bottleneck, are conducted in this study. A video processing method is used to extract the trajectories of pedestrians in the measurement section. The velocity, density, flow rate and time headway between successive pedestrians entering the bottleneck are calculated, and the relations between them are obtained from the trajectories. We report that the mean velocities for each experiment vary greatly, depending on the lanes contained in the measurement section. The mean velocity of each pedestrian in the corridor displays a trend that decreases sharply at the beginning and then fluctuates slightly around the mean value. A fundamental diagram relating density and speed is obtained. We also investigate the relation between the mean velocities of pedestrians and the density, as a function of time, and report that the mean velocity decreased while the density increased. These results are consistent with those of other researchers. The flow rate increases linearly with the bottleneck width, which is consistent with other results. The time headways are investigated in this study. It is observed that the behavior of pedestrians in the corridor, such as when they formed lanes, has a significant effect on the time headways and their distribution. The distribution of time headways in different lanes is also studied, and some interesting results are obtained. The data and results provided in this paper may be useful for improving evacuation models and designing public facilities. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Experiment and analysis on microscopic characteristics of pedestrian movement in building bottleneck

In this paper, evacuation experiments are carried out to study pedestrian movement behaviors in building bottleneck. An image processing method based on mean-shift algorithm is used to extract pedestrian movement trajectory. Based on the extracted trajectory, we analyze the microscopic movement characteristics of pedestrians such as lane formation, change of velocity and distance between two sequential pedestrians. A pedestrian lane is a group of pedestrians moving in a column. The lane formation is verified by the pedestrian trajectory and distribution of pedestrian’s lateral positions (x direction in the paper): lane number changes from one to two, three or even more with the increasing bottleneck width when pedestrians pass through the bottleneck. By analyzing the pedestrian movement behaviors in the same pedestrian lane, we find three typical movement modes in the bottleneck: time-lag acceleration, synchronous acceleration, and avoiding deceleration. Through analyzing the time intervals when successive pedestrians pass through the bottleneck, we find that most pedestrians adjust their velocities according to the distance to the forward pedestrians. Results also indicate that due to different cultures, pedestrians flux in China and Germany may have some differences besides their similarities.

In this paper,we propose the adaptive mean-shift Kalman tracking based on the mean-shift algorithm combined with the Kalman filter for tracking the laparoscopic instrument in laparoscopic *** an iterative increment update of the target candidate in the mean-shift process,the proposed algorithm has improved the performance over a typical mean-shift *** addition,the Kalman filter is employed to enhance the chance of tracking accuracy,especially when the object disappears from the *** tested the tracking performance of our proposed algorithm by using different situations from simulated *** all experimental results,the proposed algorithm can locate the target object correctly even when the size and the shape of the target have been ***,in the difficult situation when the target is hiding behind an obstacle,this algorithm can still track the target object correctly after it comes ***,this proposed algorithm can be used for locating the tip of the laparoscopic instrument in real laparoscopic surgery.
