The instrumented indentation test (IIT) method is a non-destructive approach designed to determine the tensile properties and fracture toughness of metallic materials. The accuracy of this method heavily relies on the precision of force and depth sensing. A crucial aspect of this technique is the accurate measurement of the impression depth, which requires in-depth knowledge of material elasticity and strength. Recently, a portable instrumented indentation test system including the mechatronics design and evaluation software has been successfully developed. This innovative mechatronics design boasts high accuracy and repeatability in testing results, making it an ideal tool for determining the tensile properties and fracture toughness of machinery parts under operating conditions. The evaluation software employs an analytical evaluation algorithm, developed through a review of existing methods, including the representative stress-strain and inverse finite element methods. This portable IIT system's advanced architecture enhances the accuracy and stability of tensile properties and fracture toughness predictions using spherical indentation tests. Following extensive experimentation on over 40 materials, the results have shown a high degree of agreement with conventional test methods, with a comparatively low margin of error, typically ranging from 5 to 10% for strength properties and 10-15% for fracture toughness.

In this paper, we present the mechatronics design, modeling and preliminary control of a new 5 degrees of freedom (DoF) exoskeleton, dedicated for the upper limb rehabilitation. The designed exoskeleton allows the shoulder rotations as well as the elbow movements. It combines the advantages of both parallel and serial mechanisms. It has been designed by considering the main factors in designing a general use robotic force-feedback device and the human upper limb specications. This active device, as a kind of haptic device, provides two ways communication in both position and force, and allows patients to interact with the virtual reality system and practice activities of daily living (ADL) assistance. The kinematic model of the exoskeleton is presented. In order to evaluate the performance of the exoskeleton, a preliminary position and torque controllers have been implemented.

A Mechatronies graduate program was started in September 2001 at the American University of Sharjah with the objective of helping working engineers meet the challenges posed by emerging technologies. The program strives at providing industry with a new generation of engineers having interdisciplinary skills necessary to deal with state of the art technology in designing, maintaining, selecting, and procuring modern engineering systems. This paper details framework of mechatronics design course (MTR 590). The course is a project-based course foundation course in the mechatronics graduate program. This paper will detail the course objectives, typical projects, and course assessments. There are many challenges in teaching a design course to working engineers. Some of these challenges are encountered by selecting full time students to be project team leaders. The mechatronics design course coverage, and laboratory facilities are discussed.

The design of mechatronic systems involves different technical and scientific disciplines and it is often difficult to arbitrate between engineers' points of view so as to satisfy consumers' needs. In order to converge to satisfactory tradeoffs, designers have to collaborate although they often can understand neither other designers' issues nor their solving methods. Thus there is no guarantee each designer has spent the needed effort to reach some global optimum. Moreover, the number of design parameters is generally high and it may be difficult to grasp their influence on the design criteria that even can be contradictory. The purpose of this research is to propose methods and tools in order to help designers to evaluate candidate solutions. At this aim, an original heuristic based approach is proposed to compute non-dominated solution sets i.e. Pareto fronts. The analysis of the candidate solutions is facilitated using Self Organization Maps which provide designers with easy readable two dimensional cards. Our approach is fully illustrated in the case of the design of a 2-Degrees Of Freedom robot.

According to the mechatronics design curriculum characteristics, in order to stimulate the interest of students in learning, task-driving teaching method was introduced. Through teaching reform, this paper proposed to take tasks for clues, to guide students to complete learning tasks. Finally, the teaching effect of the task-driving teaching mode was evaluated, which decreased repeated work and increased design efficiency.

This paper addresses the design procedures and simulation results from the mechatronic model of the rehabilitation equipment, which can improve the functionality and precision of the ambulatory gait training system. The distinguishing feature of mechatronic systems is the achievement of system functionality through intensive integration. The paper demonstrates how the mechatronic design modeling has helped improve the design and performance of the new rehabilitation equipment built by the authors and is known as Navigaitor. The Navigaitor is designed to aid the patients who need to improve their balance and walk The mechatronics aspects allow a better understanding of the dynamic behavior and interactions of the components. Depending on the severity of the patient's injury (stroke survivor, Parkinson, etc.), the oscillatory motion can range from uniform to non-uniform. The motion needs to be converted from the oscillatory sinusoidal motion of the patient into linear motion that the system can follow the patient with minimum lag and maximum stability. The data acquired during the training stage showing a different rate of recovery and response assists the system designers and thereby provides input to fine-tune the system and upgrade the control requirements.

Creating flexible and automated production facilities is a complex process that requires high levels of cooperation involving all mechatronics disciplines, where software tools being utilised have to work together as closely as their users. Some of these tools are well-integrated, but other tools can hardly exchange any data. One of the main barriers impeding the implementation of existing integration solutions relates to the mutually diverse requirements of the mechatronics disciplines involved. In order to overcome these barriers, this research study approaches systems integration from a data modelling view point. A middle-in data modelling strategy is presented, which goes beyond present strategies in fulfilling multidisciplinary requirements and in maintaining data model consistency. Such an approach has been successfully applied within the engineering design process concerning body shop production lines for the automotive industry.

Biomimetic Closed-Loop Control of a Novel Soft Gastric Simulator Toward Emulating Antral Contraction Waves

Soft gastric simulators are in vitro biomimetic modules that can reproduce the antral contraction waves (ACWs). Along with providing information concerning stomach contents, stomach simulators enable experts to evaluate the digestion process of foods and drugs. Traditionally, open-loop control approaches were implemented on stomach simulators to produce ACWs. Constructing a closed-loop control system is essential to improve the simulator's ability to imitate ACWs in additional scenarios and avoid constant tuning. Closed-loop control can enhance stomach simulators in accuracy, responding to various food and drug contents, timing, and unknown disturbances. In this article, a new generation of anatomically realistic soft pneumatic gastric simulators is designed and fabricated. The presented simulator represents the antrum, the lower portion of the stomach where ACWs occur. It is equipped with a real-time feedback system to implement diverse closed-loop controllers on demand. All the details of the physical design, fabrication, and assembly process are discussed. Also, the measures taken for the mechatronics design and sensory system are highlighted in this article. Through several implementation algorithms and techniques, three closed-loop controllers, including model-based and model-free schemes are designed and successfully applied on the presented simulator to imitate ACWs. All the experimental outcomes are carefully analyzed and compared against the biological counterparts. It is demonstrated that the presented simulator can serve as a reliable tool and method to scrutinize digestion and promote novel technologies around the human stomach and the digestion process. This research methodology can also be utilized to develop other biomimetic and bioinspired applications.
