The main flaws of electric arc welds and factors determining the quality of the welded scams are considered in this paper. In practice, welding tools and their control systems are affected by some external factors causing deviation of the weld's quality from the specified values. Currently used control systems of welding tools do not always satisfy the requirements for quality of welded joints. Major principles of developing the adaptive control system of the welding tool are considered here and the developed functional and block diagrams of microprocessor system are presented. General equations describing the welding process are also provided and the obtained transfer function of a closed system is described.

In this paper the problem of robust tracking for robot manipulators in the presence of uncertainty and input constraints is studied. Using the theory of uncertain dynamical systems, robust non-linear control strategies, with guaranteed tracking properties that can be quantified given bounds on the extent of model uncertainty, sensor noise, input disturbances, etc., are derived. A torque optimization strategy is also utilized to optimize the joint torques in the event of actuator saturation. The algorithm has been implemented using a single Motorola 12 MHz MC68000 microprocessor on a three-link revolute joint manipulator constructed by the School of Mechanical Engineering at Cornell University. Experimental results are presented here showing the feasibility and performance of the control stragegy.

The design and analysis of a simple active-R oscillator based on a two-pole operational amplifier model are described. The oscillator is tunable by one resistor over a fairly wide range at low sensitivities. A digitally programmable oscillator was derived by replacing the tuner resistor with an array of switched binary weighted resistors. The CMOS switches were activated and controlled by a SDA-UNI-01 microcomputer system based on the 8085 microprocessor. The performance of the programmable oscillator and its extension as a switched frequency-shift-keyed wave generator were verified.

Feedback control of muscle relaxation is shown to be of practical value in clinical applicatios. An integrated electromyogram monitor has been developed for the measurement of neuromuscular transmission. It is used as the feedback transducer in a control system to administer a relaxant drug. A microprocessor controller has been developed to close the feedback loop. The equipment was developed in the laboratory for use with sheep and the testing of a number of relaxant drugs. It has been successfully applied in the operating theatre and shows promise of being of value in a range of surgical procedures and in intensive care.

This course is designed to introduce mechanical engineers to basic concepts of microprocessor architectures, programming, and interfacing, with special focus on implementation of digital controllers for real-world electromechanical systems. Laboratory facilities at each lab station include a Pentium-based PC for code development and an 80188-based single board computer (SBC) for real-time embedded control. Since both the PC and the SBC have their own analog I/O capabilities, true distributed control is possible, with the PC acting as process monitor, plant simulator, or control supervisor, capable of downloading new controller setpoints to the SBC as process conditions change.

In this paper, the trajectory tracking of a 2-D piezo-driven system (2DPDS) using microprocessor-based fuzzy decentralized control (MBFDC) is developed. It is known that the piezoelectric actuator contains hysteresis, which is not one-to-one mapping and memoryless nonlinearity. Due to this nonlinearity and the coupling characteristic of the 2DPDS, an effective decentralized control is difficult to design. From the very beginning, the suitable coefficients of switching surface are assigned to stabilize the dynamics of switching surface and to shape the response of tracking error. Based on the data of input/output, two scaling factors are employed to normalize the switching surface and its derivative. According to the concept of if-then rule, an appropriate rule table for the ith subsystem is then achieved. This table is skew symmetric about the diagonal line;the absolute value of this table is proportional to the distance to the diagonal line. According to the system stability, the output-scaling factor is determined. Finally, a sequence of experiments including the trajectory tracking using MBFDC, proportional-integral-differential control, and classic fuzzy control is carried out to confirm the usefulness of the proposed control system.
