Proper monitoring and maintenance of bridges are crucial for the well being of the society. A university industry collaborative project supported by the Ontario Centers of Excellence in Canada focuses on researching and developing a resource management middleware for unifying resources distributed across the country to provide the necessary sharing of and inter-operability among diverse resources for bridge infrastructure management. This paper proposes a network-based solution and describes the system architecture devised as well as the choice of technology made for implementing key components.

A middleware architecture for disseminating delay-constrained information in wireless sensor networks

Data dissemination is a process where information is transmitted towards different destinations. In order to prevent accidents, coordinate rescue operations and warn people about critical events, this process imposes end-to-end delay constraints. Accordingly, the delay from each source to each destination should be monitored. For this purpose, a middleware is required between the network and the applications, offering the tracking capabilities of disseminated information. In this paper, we propose a middleware architecture for disseminating delay-constrained information in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). In order to evaluate the feasibility of such architecture, a proof of concept of a real scenario is implemented. For performance evaluation, the end-to-end delay and the percentage of success related to the disseminated information are analyzed. Such analysis reveals that the middleware offers a percentage of success close to 98%, which is highly superior to the success of individual resources, such as Short Message Services (SMS), emailing and twitter. Mobile graphics, which involves running networked computer graphics applications on mobile devices across wireless networks, is a fast growing segment of the networks and graphics industries. Running networked graphics applications in mobile environments faces a fundamental conflict;graphics applications require large amounts of memory, CPU cycles, battery power and disk space, while mobile devices and wireless channels tend to be limited in these resources. In order to mitigate mobile environment issues, some form of adaptation based on a client device's capabilities, prevailing wireless network conditions, characteristics of the graphics application and user preference, is necessary. In this paper, we describe the mobile adaptive distributed graphics framework (MADGRAF), a graphics-aware middleware architecture that makes it feasible to run complex 3D graphics applications on low-end mobile devices over wireless networks. In MADGRAF, a server can perform mobile device-optimized pre-processing of complex graphics scenes in order to speed up run time rendering, scale high-resolution meshes using polygon or image-based simplification, progressively transmit compressed graphics files, conceal transmission errors by including redundant bits or perform remote execution, all tailored to the client's capabilities. MADGRAF exposes our mobile adaptive distributed graphics language (MADGL), an API that facilitates the programming and management of networked 3D graphics in mobile environments.

Today's era is cloud era. Maximum organizations already are using cloud services for their data storage and many more looking forward to shift on cloud computing. Data stored on cloud data servers by data owners or organization should be accessible to privilege users. On cloud enormous data is stored but when authorized users wants to access specific data of his interest resource matchmaking is required. In this research work system is created for resource matchmaking and trust establishment. This system includes middleware architecture, data owners, end users and cloud data servers. Through this system not only resource matchmaking is done but trust is also established. This middleware architecture prepares trusted resources in advance for users. Trust question is also addressed though this work, to maintain trust SLAs established in between data owners and middleware architecture. This created system when tested gives interesting and meaningful results described in this work. middleware architecture system created can be implemented in many cloud environments for resource matchmaking activity.

The increasing complexity of networked embedded systems (NES) brings in the vision of large-scale systems made of subparts with decoupled interaction. In highly decoupled environments, it is required to introduce software paradigms that adjust well to this degree of independence among subsystems. In modern NES, real-time properties and reconfiguration facilities are not only an added value but an unavoidable trend that research is currently focusing at. Service-oriented architectures (SOA) are an easy-to-understand natural means to provide such decoupled model of operation;service-based applications are made of a set of self-contained pieces of functionality (services) that cooperate by exchanging messages to provide the application's common goal. This paper presents a middleware architecture that includes real-time support for service-oriented NES. The architecture includes the fundamental set of functions to support timely service-based composition and execution. The architecture is the core part of the iLAND project that aims at supporting deterministic service-based composition and reconfiguration in service-based NES. The architecture can be built on top standard communication middleware cores (as DDS or RT-CORBA), since it supports synchronous and asynchronous communication models. An experimental set up for real-time video transmission has been developed to validate it.

Traditional multimedia systems were primarily concerned with coding media types, mainly for enabling their efficient storage, real-time communication, and preserving the temporal relationships present within (and between) these media. However, current systems demand a richer and more tailored experience that calls for a deeper understanding of the semantics within the content. More specifically, semantic-level representations of content, like the identification of real-world entities (such as objects or people) and actions present in a scene, or even the interpretation of spoken sentences in audio. This work proposes an architecture for integrating semantic-level processing as part of middleware for real-time multimedia services that can facilitate applying existing or new machine-learning techniques to extract semantic representations and incorporate them into multimedia data streams as a native service. We describe and implement two use cases, showing the feasibility of the architecture in practical scenarios and as an exemplification of how developers could benefit from such an envisioned basic infrastructure with its associated services. From the observations over these two use cases, we concluded that one of the main aspects that sets our approach apart from other related works is its versatility, distribution capability, and potential applicability.

Mobile services are wireless computing applications and services that can be either pushed to user's handheld wireless devices or downloaded and installed, over the air, on handheld wireless devices. While there are several discovery protocols available, most of them do not address the issue of interacting with downloadable services. In other words, once a service has been discovered and selected to be used, how do users interact with such a service? The worst possible scenario is when a user pays for a service that is unusable, possibly because the device is not capable of running the service. In this paper we present the Mobile Service Manager (MSM) middleware architecture that enables multiple interaction models suitable for mobile devices, and discuss its components. We argue that supported interaction models should be specified in the service advertisement, and we propose an extension to the Web Service Description Language (WSDL) for describing services and their supported interaction models.

The widespread usage of mobile applications with the limited resources of mobile devices pushed towards the investment in Mobile Cloud Computing (MCC). In MCC, web services are available on the cloud server and are invoked by mobile applications whenever and wherever needed via a hybrid wired and wireless networks. One of the most important issues in the mobile experience is the web service request Time-out problem. This problem is tightly coupled with the increase in the service response size, database query time, and the required computations on the server, which occurs because of the increased application usage. This paper proposes a Reliable Approach using middleware and WebSockets (RAMWS) that overcomes the Time-out problem and achieves reliable web service consumption. The enhanced architecture is a hybrid between the middleware approach and the WebSocket open connection communication protocol. The RAMWS reduces the network usage time up to 7 times better than the direct-cloud approach (Invoking the cloud service directly from the mobile device), by using the shortest time response from two expected responses, and accordingly, enhances the mobile experience. Energy management in electric grids with multiple energy sources, generators, storage devices, and interacting loads along with their complex behaviors requires grid wide control. Communication infrastructure that aggregates information from heterogeneous devices in the electric grid making the applications completely independent of physical connectivity is essential for building in the context of control applications. This investigation presents a semantic middleware that is used to implement a receding-horizon-based optimal power flow (OPF) in smart grids. The presence of renewable energy sources, storage systems, and loads dispersed all along the grid necessitates the use of grid wide control and a communication infrastructure to support it. To this extent, the proposed middleware will serve as the basis for representing various components of the power grid. It is enriched with intelligence by semantic annotation and ontologies that provide situation awareness and context discovery. The middleware deployment is demonstrated by implementing the receding horizon OPF in a network in Steinkjer, Norway. Our results demonstrate the advantages of both the middleware and the algorithm. Furthermore, the results prove the added flexibility obtained in the grid due to the addition of renewable energy and storage systems. The significant advantage of the proposed approach is that the real-time monitoring infrastructure is used for improving the flexibility, reliability, and efficiency of the grid.

The evolution of Internet of Things (IoT) led to the construction of many IoT middleware, a software that plays a key role since it supports the communication among devices, users, and applications. Although various solutions and studies were proposed, they rarely address crucial privacy and security considerations, especially regarding the message queuing telemetry transport (MQTT) protocol. Moreover, in the majority of the solutions, integrating new devices is a time-consuming task performed manually that cannot be accomplished in a scenario with thousands, maybe millions of devices. In this sense, this article proposes a new IoT middleware, called ***, a scalable, secure, and innovative middleware solution that addresses the middleware concerns identified in this article. *** architectural recommendations and requirements are detailed and can be replicated by new and available solutions. It supports MQTT, CoAP, and HTTP as application-layer protocols. Its performance is evaluated in comparison with the most promising solutions available in the literature and the results obtained by the proposed solution are extremely promising. *** is evaluated, demonstrated, validated, and it is ready and available for use.
