The white-backed planthopper, Sogatella furcifera Horváth. (Hemiptera: Delphacidae) is the most devastating migratory rice pest in Yunnan, southwestern China. The escalating outbreak trend in recent years has become a major threat to regional rice production and agroecosecurity. Our research was aimed to answer part of the migration pattern of S. furcifera in Yunnan.

Homelessness and migration: The geography of homeless migrants in China

Homeless people have become more visible in China in recent years. However, research on Chinese homelessness in general and homeless migrants in particular is still very limited. Based on the China Migrants Dynamic Survey, this pioneering exploration of the geography of homeless migrants in China arrives at three conclusions. First, although homeless migrants are often scorned as an underclass of derelict drifters, the majority are educated, married, and employed, sometimes temporarily. Second, although most homeless migrants congregate in the most developed coastal regions, the number of homeless migrants as a proportion of total migrants is relatively high in some remote provinces, with significant numbers residing in rural areas. Third, in addition to the three established drivers: the housing market, economic opportunity, and social support, prejudice towards the homeless is shown to be an important factor in the concentration of homeless migrants and their exclusion from urban society. This paper contributes to an understanding of homeless migrants in China and the factors accounting for their spatial distribution.

Microenvironments provide cues to stem cells and induce signals to direct their fate. With a view toward further understanding the correlation between surface chemistry and cell functions of stem cells, adipose-derived stromal cells (ADSCs) and self-assembled monolayers terminated with four different functional groups (-CH3, -NH2, -COOH and -OH) were used to assess cell adhesion, migration and differentiation potential in short-term incubation. Quantitative time-lapse microscopic analysis revealed that migration speed and patterns were strongly regulated by surface chemistry. ADSCs showed a mesenchymal migration pattern on the -COOH-modified surface. In contrast, cells on the -CH3-modified surface displayed an amoeboid-like migration pattern. Cell-migration speeds on the chemically-modified surfaces followed the sequence (by tail-groups): -CH3>-COOH>-OH>-NH2. After 1 day of incubation, ADSCs showed a round compact shape and adipogenic differentiation potential on the -CH3-modified surface. The round compact shape and extremely different migration pattern of ADSCs on -CH3 surfaces were attributed to the lower amount of exposed cell-binding domains of adsorbed proteins. ADSCs exhibited spindle-like shape and higher Collagen II expression on the -COOH-modified surface and well-spread morphology and higher Runx2 expression were observed on the -NH2- and -OH-modified surfaces. Surface chemistry presented a strong influence on cell functions of ADSCs, including cell adhesion, migration and mRNA expression in short-term incubation. (C) Koninklijke Brill NV, Leiden, 2012

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Herniated disc fragments are known to migrate in various directions within the spinal canal. To date, no comprehensive studies have been undertaken to examine the migration patterns of herniated disc material using a standard nomenclature and classification system. PURPOSE: To report migration patterns of extruded lumbar disc fragments. STUDY DESIGN: A review of magnetic resonance (MR) images. PATIENT SAMPLE: A total of 1,020 consecutive Azeri patients with symptomatic extruded lumbar intervertebral disc herniation. OUTCOME MEASURES: migration patterns of extruded lumbar disc fragments in vertical and horizontal planes and their association with age, gender, body mass index (BMI), and the level of herniation. METHODS: High-quality axial and sagittal MR images of the lumbar spine were used. Disc material that was displaced away from the site of extrusion, regardless of continuity, was considered "migrated.'' The migration patterns observed were rostral or caudal in the vertical plane and central, paracentral, subarticular, foraminal, or extraforaminal in the horizontal plane. RESULTS: In the vertical plane, rostral and caudal migrations were observed in 27.8% and 72.2% of the patients, respectively. The number of rostral migrations increased significantly with increasing age and in higher levels in the lumbar spine (p<.001 for both). Radiculopathy was significantly more frequent in caudal migrations than in rostral migrations (78.9% vs. 65.1%, p<.001). There was no significant association between gender or BMI and migration patterns in the vertical plane. In the horizontal plane, central, paracentral, subarticular, foraminal, and extraforaminal migrations were reported in 17.3%, 74.2%, 4.3%, 2.5%, and 1.8% of the patients, respectively. Understanding migration ecology of Eurasian wigeons (Mareca penelope) is crucial for effective population management, mitigating conflicts with human, and habitat conservation. The objectives of the present study were 1) to determine their migration patterns of Eurasian wigeons in the East Asian flyway, and 2) to identify the key breeding and stopover sites. From 2007 to 2016, a total of the 64 wigeons, which wintered in Japan, were equipped with satellite transmitters. Most Eurasian wigeons migrated to breeding sites in Russia either (a) via a continental route through China, (b) via the Kamchatka Peninsula, or (c) via Sakhalin Island. In spring, many of the Eurasian wigeons (60.98%) migrated via the continental route. In autumn, most Eurasian wigeons (57.14%) migrated through Kamchatka. These differences may be attributable to the influence of Okhotsk Sea air mass on migration decisions due to loop migration. Similarly to the migration of Mallards, Eurasian wigeons employed a "long-stay and short-travel" migration strategy. Eurasian wigeons mainly nested between latitude between 43 degrees to 75 degrees N. From the present findings and the published literature, Eurasian wigeons that winter in Japan are considered to migrate to Russia, China, and the United States during the breeding season, although the main breeding area is in northeastern Russia. A total of 296 important sites to Eurasian wigeons were mapped, and 118 location names with geographic coordinates, and the top five most frequently used sites were identified in each season.

Many organizations migrate on-premise software applications to the cloud. However, current coarse-grained cloud migration solutions have made such migrations a non transparent task, an endeavor based on trial-and-error. This paper presents Variability-based, pattern-driven Architecture migration (V-PAM), a migration method based on (i) a catalogue of fine-grained service-based cloud architecture migration patterns that target multi-cloud, (ii) a situational migration process framework to guide pattern selection and composition, and (iii) a variability model to structure system migration into a coherent framework. The proposed migration patterns are based on empirical evidence from several migration projects, best practice for cloud architectures and a systematic literature review of existing research. Variability-based, pattern-driven Architecture migration allows an organization to (i) select appropriate migration patterns, (ii) compose them to define a migration plan, and (iii) extend them based on the identification of new patterns in new contexts. Deep-learning-based extraction of the animal migration patterns from weather radar images

Continental coverage and year-round operation of the weather radar networks provide an unprecedented opportunity for studying large-scale airborne migration. The broad and local-scale airborne information collected by these infrastructures can answer many ecological questions. However, extracting and interpreting the biological information from such massive weather radar data remains an intractable problem. Recently, many big-data problems have been solved using the deep learning technology. In this study, the biological information in the weather radar data is identified using the advanced deep learning method. The proposed method consists of two main parts, i.e., a rendering and casting procedure and an image segmentation procedure based on a convolutional neural network. The biological data are automatically extracted by rendering and mapping, image segmentation, and result masking. By analyzing the typical radar data from single and multiple stations, we partly reveal the intensity and speed of the migration pattern. We present the first feasibility study of the extraction of local and large-scale biological phenomena from the Chinese weather radar network data.

Does global warming impact on migration patterns and recruitment of Allis shad (Alosa alosa L.) young of the year in the Loire River, France?

The hydrological and thermal changes in the Loire River were investigated to test the influence of climatic changes on a short freshwater stage anadromous fish species, Allis shad, for the 1995-2004 period. The mean water temperatures during the adult migration and juvenile growth phases showed significant increase, and mean water flow during these two phases decreased significantly. The period below the threshold of 18 degrees C shortened, and the period between 18 degrees C and the maximum lengthened, while the temperature amounts (number of degree-days) received by aquatic organisms between 18 and 24 degrees C showed an increase. The pattern of young-of-the-year downstream migration was modified. The first day when the juvenile catches reached 5% occurred 17 days earlier at the end of the 1995-2004 period than at the beginning. The first day when the juvenile catches reached 50% was related to the 18 degrees C threshold (reproductive threshold) and the temperature amounts accumulated between the 18 and 20 degrees C thresholds. The year-on-year levels of young-of-the-year abundance showed wide variations, which were not explained by environmental parameters, probably because of the long distance between the study site and the spawning grounds.

Source and migration patterns of heavy metals and human health risk assessment of heavy metals in soil-corn straw-flue gas system

The process of rapid urbanization in Northeast China has resulted in severe heavy metal pollution in the environment. In this study, we investigated the characteristics of heavy metal pollution in soil-corn straw and its combustion flue gas system, and the health risks of heavy metal pollution. The results showed that Cu and Zn in soil were more easily absorbed by corn straw roots. Heavy metals in soil, corn straw and flue gas from corn straw burning all pose some health risk to humans, and are more harmful to children than adults. The concentrations of heavy metals in both soil and flue gas from corn straw burning have reached extremely high ecological risk. The main sources of heavy metal elements in soils are, in order, industrial production, agricultural production activities and metallurgical production. This study highlights the key issues of heavy metal contamination in soil-corn straw and its combustion flue gas system, provides an auxiliary guide for the next step in analyzing the transfer mechanisms, and suggests a rational approach to mitigate heavy metal contamination.
