Deinterleaving of radar signals and PRF identification algorithms

Electronic warfare (EW) receivers are passive receivers which receive emissions from other platforms, and do certain analysis on these emissions. Some EW receivers receive radar pulses, measure the parameter of each pulse received and group the pulses that belongs to the same emitter together to determine the radar parameters for each emitter. These parameters are then compared with values stored for known radar types, to identify the emitter type. Two parts are focused, emitters deinterleaving and PRF-type identification. The deinterleaving is done through parameters clustering. Two parameters are selected for clustering direction of arrival and radio frequency. A self-organising neural network called Fuzzy ART is proposed for clustering. This algorithm has a very good clustering quality and can run in real-time applications. The PRF-type identification is done through time-of-arrival (TOA) analysis. Three previously presented algorithms are combined in new scheme to do the TOA analysis (or PRF-type identification). These algorithms are difference TOA histogram, TOA folding histogram and sequence search algorithm. The complete proposed system has been tested using three different tests. These tests are simple PRI test, jittered PRI test and staggered PRI test. The proposed system identifies up to 90 simple emitters, 20 jittered emitters and 20 staggered emitters. In all tests, the data were simulated and generated using software.

Characterisation of tool marks on cartridge cases by combining multiple images

The characteristic marks left by firearms on cartridge cases (CCs) during firing are used by forensic experts to identify CCs fired from the same firearm;however, the nature of the tool marks on the CCs is not well understood. The objective of this study is to separate the tool marks i.e., the signal, from the background signal and the noise and thereby understand its peculiarities. To extract the signal, which is much weaker than the noise, second-order derivatives of three-dimensional images of the surfaces of a series of CCs fired from the same firearm were used. Instead of using rigid body transformation, the images are first registered based on estimated planar homographies;then unwanted areas, including the headstamp are masked out. Aligned images are merged by weighted averaging using estimated signal and noise variances, which are also used for calculating signal and noise spectra. Wiener filtering is applied to further increase the signal-to-noise ratio. The effectiveness of the method is demonstrated on real data. It is also shown that breech face marks exist on the outer ring, a feature typically ignored in automatic matching. In addition, visual results obtained by reconstructing the surface from second-order derivatives are presented.

Electromagnetic situation analysis and judgment based on deep learning

The electromagnetic situation, which can promote the abilities of understanding and decision-making for the battlefield, has attracted significant interest recently in information-based warfare. This paper investigates the deep learning-based electromagnetic situation analysis and judgment in a complicated battlefield environment. To comprehensively simulate the two-sided battling process, a turn-based confrontation strategy is proposed, and an electromagnetic situation analysis and judgment model are then designed based on the AlphaGo Zero algorithm to achieve efficient situation analysis and decision-making. In addition, an electromagnetic situation-based attack-defense platform is developed to realize and evaluate this designed model. Simulation results demonstrate that this designed model achieves significant performance in electromagnetic situation analysis and judgment compared with the Monte Carlo Tree Search based baseline.

Quadratic time-frequency analysis and sequential recognition for specific emitter identification

Specific emitter identification (SEI) is a state-of-the-art in electronic warfare. The conventional methods for SEI hardly satisfy the modern electronic reconnaissance. In this study, first the authors study the quadratic time-frequency distributions and its slice features and noise analysis. Based on the time-frequency features, two sequential recognition methods based on probabilistic support vector machine (SVM) and iterative least-square estimation are studied, respectively. The proposed methods are able to reject the interference pulses and update the classifier or feature parameters, which accomplish the online recognition and online learning of specific radar emitter. Experiments on actual intercepted radar signals with the same type verify the correctness and validity of the proposed methods.

Distributed passive radar sensor networks with near-space vehicle-borne receivers

In this study, we propose a distributed passive radar sensor network with near-space vehicle-borne receivers for regional remote sensing surveillance. Note that near-space is referred to the altitude range between 20 and 100 km is too high for airplanes, but too low for satellites. Near-space vehicles can offer a wide coverage like satellite and a fast maneuverability like airplane. The distributed passive radar sensor networks system operation mode, imaging coverage and imaging resolution are analysed. As there is a big speed difference between the transmit and receive platforms, we propose a multi-beamforming and scan-on-receive combined approach to extend the limited imaging coverage. Since the conventional motion compensation technique may be not reachable for the system due to its limited load capability, an overlapped subaperture-based motion compensation algorithm is proposed. The effectiveness of the approaches is validated by numerical simulation results.

Maps, apart from helping travellers, could also be powerful weapons. All maps in the Soviet Union carried deliberate errors to mislead mysterious Western spies with purposeful paranoia-driven deviations. There were no mistakes - deliberate or otherwise - in the Soviet cartographers' military maps of the West; the Maps of the 20th century exhibition in the British Library holds a 1980s map of Brighton as a possible nuclear strike target, describing every single dwelling, warehouse and workshop in minute detail.
