A reliable methodology based on mine blast optimization algorithm for optimal sizing of hybrid PV-wind-FC system for remote area in Egypt

In this paper, a reliable methodology incorporated mine "blast algorithm (MBA) is applied to solve the optimal sizing of a hybrid system consisting of photovoltaic modules, wind turbines and fuel cells (PV/WT/FC) to meet a certain load of remote area in Egypt. The main objective of the optimal sizing process is to achieve the minimum annual cost of the system with load coverage. The sizing process is performed optimally based on real measured data for solar radiation, ambient temperature and wind velocity recorded by the solar radiation and meteorological station located at national research institute of astronomy and geophysics, Helwan city, Egypt. Three other meta-heuristic optimization techniques, particle swarm optimization, cuckoo search and artificial bee colony are applied to solve the problem and the results are compared with those obtained by the proposed methodology. A power management strategy that regulates the power flow between each system component is also presented. The obtained results show that;applying the proposed methodology will save about 24.8% in the annual total cost of the proposed system compared with PSO, 8.956% compared with CS and 11.5576% compared with ABC. The proposed algorithm based on MBA is candidate for solving the presented optimization problem of optimal sizing the hybrid PV/WT/FC system. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Improved mine blast algorithm for optimal cost design of water distribution systems

The design of water distribution systems is a large class of combinatorial, nonlinear optimization problems with complex constraints such as conservation of mass and energy equations. Since feasible solutions are often extremely complex, traditional optimization techniques are insufficient. Recently, metaheuristic algorithms have been applied to this class of problems because they are highly efficient. In this article, a recently developed optimizer called the mine blast algorithm (MBA) is considered. The MBA is improved and coupled with the hydraulic simulator EPANET to find the optimal cost design for water distribution systems. The performance of the improved mine blast algorithm (IMBA) is demonstrated using the well-known Hanoi, New York tunnels and Balerma benchmark networks. Optimization results obtained using IMBA are compared to those using MBA and other optimizers in terms of their minimum construction costs and convergence rates. For the complex Balerma network, IMBA offers the cheapest network design compared to other optimization algorithms.

The heat sinks are utilized in electronic devices to eliminate heat from the chip and efficiently transmit it to the environment. Therefore, the optimal geometry sizes of fin heat sinks are the point of concern for manufacturers and designers. For this reason, the importance of optimization techniques particularly metaheuristics is understood. The design variables are width of heat sink, number of fins, fin height, and fin diameter. The various responses that have been considered are electromagnetic emitted radiations, thermal resistance, and mass of the heat sink investigated separately and simultaneously (multi-objective). mine blast algorithm (MBA), as a recently developed optimizer, is inspired from explosion of mines. The optimum dimensions and values for each response have been obtained by the MBA and have been compared with other optimization methods in the literature. In terms of thermal resistance and mass responses, the MBA has offered better values, while for the emitted radiations, the obtained results obtained by Taguchi-based gray relational analysis (TGRA) was preferred. For manufacturing point of view, the MBA and TGRA both suggested better and efficient design. In addition, the value path analysis has been carried out to compare the trade-off among the considered responses. Finally, parametric sensitivity analyses have been implemented for design parameters, and discussions and comparisons have been carried out for the effects of each decision variable. By considering all responses, width of heat sink and fin height are considered as the most important and effective design parameters, respectively.

Thispaper proposes a novel strategy for tuning Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) controllers based on mine blast algorithm. A PID tuning problem that satisfies multiple H-infinity condition is selected for the study. This problem suffers from conservative assumptions associated with any existing method. Such a problem can be easily solved without using any complicated manipulation by implementing mine blast algorithm (MBA) for gain tuning scheme for PID controller. This enables us to solve for the desired PID gain values just by solving a constrained MBA problem in a simple way. We have proposed a mis-fitness function based on the response characteristic of the plant with controller. The H-infinity criterion is imposed as a constraint on the optimization problem. There is however no theoretical proof attesting the effectiveness of the proposed method as MBA is fundamentally a stochastic optimization tool. Hence multiple problems have been discussed to demonstrate the effectiveness of proposed method to obtain PID parameters subjected to H-infinity conditions.

A novel population-based algorithm based on the mine bomb explosion concept, called the mine blast algorithm (MBA), is applied to the constrained optimization and engineering design problems. A comprehensive comparative study has been carried out to show the performance of the MBA over other recognized optimizers in terms of computational effort (measured as the number of function evaluations) and function value (accuracy). Sixteen constrained benchmark and engineering design problems have been solved and the obtained results were compared with other well-known optimizers. The obtained results demonstrate that, the proposed MBA requires less number of function evaluations and in most cases gives better results compared to other considered algorithms. The article presents a new optimization technique mine blast algorithm (MBA) and Modified Biogeography Based Optimization algorithm to solve economic load dispatch problem with considering non-linear constraints like valve point loading effect, ramp rate limit, prohibited zone etc. The main objective of economic load dispatch problem is to obtain optimal power allocation meeting load demand satisfying constraints where fuel cost will be minimized. Although the conventional BBO approaches have some drawbacks such as obtaining hasty convergence characteristics (i.e., exploration problem), not capable for getting nearest optimal points (i.e., exploitation problem), and crisis of proper mechanism to treat the constraints (i.e., constraint handling problem). To overcome this modified BBO has been proposed in this article. Another newly proposed algorithm is based on mine bomb explosion concept. This technique searches for the global optimum. It based on distance and direction of shrapnel species. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithms have been verified on four different test systems with equality and inequality constraints. Compared with the other existing techniques demonstrates the superiority of the proposed algorithms.

This paper presents novel models of Soft Computing (SC) Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) controllers for Photo-Voltaic Water Pumping Systems(PVWPS) Based on DC Motor. Also paper discusses and evaluates the performance of the proposed models. The proposed methodology is mainly based on duty cycle prediction of the cuk converter to track the maximum power point (MPP) of the PV array. Indeed of the maximum water flow rate of PVWPS at varying climate conditions must ensure that the motor-pump set operates at MPP. The analytical modeling for the proposed MPPT controller has been implemented to predict the optimal duty cycle of the converter for MPPT achievement within the different operating conditions of solar radiation, ambient temperature, and total static head. Also, different Soft Computing (SC) algorithms have been implemented and evaluated based on Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm, mine blast algorithm (MBA), and beta-hill climbing (beta-HC) algorithm. A comparative study between SC algorithms, analytical modeling, and experimental works are given. Also evaluations of SC algorithms are done to verify SC algorithms' accuracy. This evaluation study has proven the significant improvement of daily water flow rate and also has specified the appropriateness of the SC algorithm for MPPT for a PVWPS. This paper exhibits an attempt for controlling the frequency of an independent microgrid (MG) system by using modified bias (MB) and Internal Model Control (IMC) based Pill Controller with mine blast algorithm (MBA) under extreme unfavorable scenarios. Frequency deviation occurred in the system because of mismatch between Actual Generated power and total load demand. To address this issue the IMC-based the frequency regulation and gain parameters of the Microgrid are taken into consideration for finding the limits of control parameters for MBA, which will make sure that the search points produced by MBA are robust and stable. In realtime simulation environments using the digital simulator OPAL-RT, simulation of the proposed (MBA based MB-IMC) controller-based MG model has been appropriately tested. In various real-life situations, the system performance is obtained using the MBA-MBIMC controller and system outputs are closely investigated. The performance of MBA-MBIMC Controller is compared with that of PSO-MBIMC, MBIMC and MB-LDR controllers. The result shows that, in forms of peak deviation, time of settling and a smaller no. of oscillations, the proposed MBA-MBIMC controller provides the most optimum adaptive output.

Optimal gain scheduling of VSC-HVDC system sliding mode control via artificial bee colony and mine blast algorithms

This study focuses on the optimal gain scheduling of the robust non-linear sliding mode control (SMC) for the voltage source converters high-voltage direct current (VSC-HVDC) systems, for ensuring the desired dynamic behaviour improvement and stability enhancement. First, the development of the system steady-state mathematical model of non-linear character is explored in order to control the active power, the reactive power, and the DC link voltage towards their desired set point values. Their measured signals, as the outputs, are controlled via the optimal SMC-based controllers, using their reference signals directly. Both artificial bee colony and mine blast algorithm are considered to optimally select the optimal gains of SMC controller that will minimise the steady-state error of the obtained dynamic behaviour. Therefore, the DC voltage, the active and reactive powers can be properly maintained at their reference values. Both optimal SMC-based techniques are compared in terms of the behavioural analysis and robustness. Using MATLAB-Simulink, the results significantly verify that the designed controllers based on SMC can achieve favourable tracking performance and contribute efficiently towards improving the system dynamic behaviour.

In this study a novel optimization method is presented, the so called mine blast algorithm (MBA). The fundamental concepts and ideas of MBA are derived from the explosion of mine bombs in real world. The efficiency of the proposed optimizer is tested via the optimization of several truss structures with discrete variables and its performance is compared with several well-known metaheuristic algorithms. The results show that MBA is able to provide faster convergence rate and also manages to achieve better optimal solutions compared to other efficient optimizers. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd.
