Self-adaptive global mine blast algorithm for numerical optimization

In this article, a self-adaptive global mine blast algorithm (GMBA) is proposed for numerical optimization. This algorithm is designed in a novel way, and a new shrapnel equation is proposed for the exploitation phase of mine blast algorithm. A theoretical study is performed, which proves the convergence of any typical shrapnel piece;a new definition for parameters values is defined based on the performed theoretical studies. The promising nature of newly designed exploitation idea is verified with the help of multiple numerical experiments. A state-of-the-art set of benchmark problems are solved with the proposed GMBA, and the optimization results are compared with seven state-of-the-art optimization algorithms. The experimental results are statistically validated by using Wilcoxon signed-rank test, and time complexity of GMBA is also calculated. It has been justified that the proposed GMBA works as a global optimizer for constrained optimization problems. As an application to the newly developed GMBA, an important data clustering problem is solved on six data clusters and the clustering results are compared with the state-of-the-art optimization algorithms. The promising results claim the proposed GMBA as a strong optimizer for data clustering application.

Thispaper proposes a novel strategy for tuning Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) controllers based on mine blast algorithm. A PID tuning problem that satisfies multiple H-infinity condition is selected for the study. This problem suffers from conservative assumptions associated with any existing method. Such a problem can be easily solved without using any complicated manipulation by implementing mine blast algorithm (MBA) for gain tuning scheme for PID controller. This enables us to solve for the desired PID gain values just by solving a constrained MBA problem in a simple way. We have proposed a mis-fitness function based on the response characteristic of the plant with controller. The H-infinity criterion is imposed as a constraint on the optimization problem. There is however no theoretical proof attesting the effectiveness of the proposed method as MBA is fundamentally a stochastic optimization tool. Hence multiple problems have been discussed to demonstrate the effectiveness of proposed method to obtain PID parameters subjected to H-infinity conditions.

In this article economic load dispatch problem with co-generation units has been solved using mine blast algorithm with some non-linearities like valve point loading effect etc. The primary objective of CHPED is to determine power and heat allocation among power only, co-generation and heat only units where cost will be minimum. This newly proposed algorithm is built on the basis of bomb explosion. This technique searches for the global optimum. It based on distance and direction of shrapnel species. This method has been tested on co-generation systems with equality and in-equality constraints and advantage of this algorithm proves by comparing with other algorithms.

This research investigates the performance improvements of induction motor (IM) drive supplied by a hybrid wind/battery storage system based on the optimal mine blast algorithm. This is done by using IM field-oriented speed control as an independent dynamic load and a battery as a storage power unit. To ensure the accuracy and quality of energy equilibrium in autonomous wind power systems, there is an urgent and necessary demand for battery storage units. So in principle, the overall system of the complete model is configured to be combined with an uncontrolled rectifier, a steady magnetic synchronous generator (PMSG), a buck converter, and a lead-acid battery (LAB) in addition to an induction motor. According to the imposed controller, the loads required power can be obtained effectively by the prescribed battery storage and the wind generation units. Considering the suggested vector control to adjust the induction motor velocity through a three-phase inverter, it will be obtained 220 V/50 Hz, which is the principal target of this research. Moreover, the system with the proposed optimal control is compared with the optimal control based on genetic algorithm (GA) and the classical PID control. It is, therefore, possible to conclude that the results of numerical calculations and simulations illustrate that the studied system has strong achievement and perfect predictor of the electric parameter waveforms.

A reliable methodology based on mine blast optimization algorithm for optimal sizing of hybrid PV-wind-FC system for remote area in Egypt

In this paper, a reliable methodology incorporated mine "blast algorithm (MBA) is applied to solve the optimal sizing of a hybrid system consisting of photovoltaic modules, wind turbines and fuel cells (PV/WT/FC) to meet a certain load of remote area in Egypt. The main objective of the optimal sizing process is to achieve the minimum annual cost of the system with load coverage. The sizing process is performed optimally based on real measured data for solar radiation, ambient temperature and wind velocity recorded by the solar radiation and meteorological station located at national research institute of astronomy and geophysics, Helwan city, Egypt. Three other meta-heuristic optimization techniques, particle swarm optimization, cuckoo search and artificial bee colony are applied to solve the problem and the results are compared with those obtained by the proposed methodology. A power management strategy that regulates the power flow between each system component is also presented. The obtained results show that;applying the proposed methodology will save about 24.8% in the annual total cost of the proposed system compared with PSO, 8.956% compared with CS and 11.5576% compared with ABC. The proposed algorithm based on MBA is candidate for solving the presented optimization problem of optimal sizing the hybrid PV/WT/FC system. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Frequency control represents a critically significant issue for the enhancement of the dynamic performance of isolated micro grids. The micro grid system studied here was a wind-diesel system. A new and robust optimization technique called the mine blast algorithm (MBA) was designed for tuning the PID (proportional-integral-differential) gains of the blade pitch controller of the wind turbine side and the gains of the superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) controller. SMES was implemented to release and absorb active power quickly in order to achieve a balance between generation and load power, and thereby control system frequency. The minimization of frequency and output wind power deviations were considered as objective functions for the PID controller of the wind turbine, and the diesel frequency and power deviations were used as objective functions for optimizing the SMES controller gains. Different case studies were considered by applying disturbances in input wind, load power, and wind gust, and sensitivity analysis was conducted by applying harsh conditions with varying fluid coupling parameter of the wind-diesel hybrid system. The proposed MBA-SMES was compared with MBA (tuned PID pitch controller) and classical PI control systems in the Matlab environment. Simulation results showed that the MBA-SMES scheme damped the oscillations in the system output responses and improved the system performance by reducing the overshoot by 75% and 36% from classical and MBA-based systems, respectively, reduced the settling time by 45% compared to other systems, and set the final steady-state error of the frequency deviation to zero compared to other systems. The proposed scheme was extremely robust to disturbances and parameter variations.

This paper presents the applications of the mine blast algorithm (MBA) and the water cycle algorithm (WCA), in addition to an improved version of MBA for weight minimization of truss structures including discrete sizing variables. The MBA mimics the explosion of landmines, while the WCA is inspired by the observation of water cycle process. An improved version of MBA (IMBA), is also presented. The efficiency of the three optimization algorithms is tested using classical benchmark discrete truss design problems. Optimization results show that MBA, IMBA, and WCA offer a good degree of competitiveness against other state-of-the-art metaheuristic techniques. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This study focuses on the optimal gain scheduling of the robust non-linear sliding mode control (SMC) for the voltage source converters high-voltage direct current (VSC-HVDC) systems, for ensuring the desired dynamic behaviour improvement and stability enhancement. First, the development of the system steady-state mathematical model of non-linear character is explored in order to control the active power, the reactive power, and the DC link voltage towards their desired set point values. Their measured signals, as the outputs, are controlled via the optimal SMC-based controllers, using their reference signals directly. Both artificial bee colony and mine blast algorithm are considered to optimally select the optimal gains of SMC controller that will minimise the steady-state error of the obtained dynamic behaviour. Therefore, the DC voltage, the active and reactive powers can be properly maintained at their reference values. Both optimal SMC-based techniques are compared in terms of the behavioural analysis and robustness. Using MATLAB-Simulink, the results significantly verify that the designed controllers based on SMC can achieve favourable tracking performance and contribute efficiently towards improving the system dynamic behaviour.

The article presents a new optimization technique mine blast algorithm (MBA) and Modified Biogeography Based Optimization algorithm to solve economic load dispatch problem with considering non-linear constraints like valve point loading effect, ramp rate limit, prohibited zone etc. The main objective of economic load dispatch problem is to obtain optimal power allocation meeting load demand satisfying constraints where fuel cost will be minimized. Although the conventional BBO approaches have some drawbacks such as obtaining hasty convergence characteristics (i.e., exploration problem), not capable for getting nearest optimal points (i.e., exploitation problem), and crisis of proper mechanism to treat the constraints (i.e., constraint handling problem). To overcome this modified BBO has been proposed in this article. Another newly proposed algorithm is based on mine bomb explosion concept. This technique searches for the global optimum. It based on distance and direction of shrapnel species. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithms have been verified on four different test systems with equality and inequality constraints. Compared with the other existing techniques demonstrates the superiority of the proposed algorithms.

mine blast harmony search: A new hybrid optimization method for improving exploration and exploitation capabilities

This paper proposes a hybrid optimization method that combines the power of the harmony search (HS) with the mine blast algorithm (MBA). The resulting mine blast harmony search (MBHS) uses MBA for exploration and HS for exploitation. The HS is inspired by the improvisation process of musicians, while the MBA is derived based on explosion of landmines. The HS used in the hybrid algorithm is an improved version, introducing a new concept for the harmony memory size, while the MBA is modified in terms of its mathematical formulation. Several numerical problems and benchmarks with many design variables and constraints are used to validate MBHS, and the optimization results are compared with those from various algorithms in the literature. The numerical results show that the proposed hybrid method provides better exploitation ability (especially in the final iterations) and enjoys mature convergence to the optimum solution.
