Procurement planning in oil refining industries considering blending operations

This paper addresses procurement planning in oil refining, which has until now only had limited attention in the literature. We introduce a mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) model and develop a novel two-stage solution approach, which aims at computational efficiency while addressing the problems due to discrepancies between a non-linear and a linearized formulation. The proposed model covers realistic settings by allowing the blending of crude oil in storage tanks, by modeling storage tanks and relevant processing units individually, and by handling more crude oil types and quality parameters than in previous literature. The developed approach is tested using historical data from Statoil A/S as well as through a comprehensive numerical analysis. The approach generates a feasible procurement plan within acceptable computation time, is able to quickly adjust an existing plan to take advantage of individual procurement opportunities, and can be used within a rolling time horizon scheme. MINLP formulations for solving strip packing problems in LCD mother glass production

Mother glass production for liquid crystal displays involves the cutting of small rectangles from a large rectangle (strip) to minimize the length of the strip used. This is called the strip packing problem. The main concept for formulating this problem is to generate cutting patterns that can be used to produce items from the strip. This problem is a non-convex mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) problem due to the bilinear terms in the demand and objective function. To obtain global optimal solutions, this problem should be transformed into several linear forms. Numerical examples based on the strip packing problem in LCD mother glass production are provided. Comparison of Sen Transformer and UPFC for congestion management in hybrid electricity markets

Congestion management (CM) is one of the most important and challenging tasks of the Independent System Operator (ISO) in the deregulated environment. Recently, Sen Transformer (ST) has emerged as an important power flow control device which has the capability of power flow control over a wide range like UPFC. This device with a conventional transformer and tap changers has the capability of bidirectional control of active and reactive power and can play a very important role in future markets for mitigating the congestion problems. In this paper, the capability of ST has been utilized to manage transmission line congestion for hybrid based electricity market model. The main contribution of the paper is: (i) to develop an optimal rescheduling of generators strategy for real time congestion management and impact of ST for congestion management, (ii) the comparison of ST with unified power flow controller (UPFC) for congestion management, (iii) the secure bilateral transactions determination in a hybrid market model and congestion management with both power flow controllers in combined pool and bilateral market model. The optimal location of ST and UPFC has been obtained solving mixed integer non-linear programming model of congestion management. Designing Cost-Effective Biopharmaceutical Facilities Using mixed-integer Optimization

Chromatography operations are identified as critical steps in a monoclonal antibody (mAb) purification process and can represent a significant proportion of the purification material costs. This becomes even more critical with increasing product titers that result in higher mass loads onto chromatography columns, potentially causing capacity bottlenecks. In this work, a mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) model was created and applied to an industrially relevant case study to optimize the design of a facility by determining the most cost-effective chromatography equipment sizing strategies for the production of mAbs. Furthermore, the model was extended to evaluate the ability of a fixed facility to cope with higher product titers up to 15 g/L. Examination of the characteristics of the optimal chromatography sizing strategies across different titer values enabled the identification of the maximum titer that the facility could handle using a sequence of single column chromatography steps as well as multi-column steps. The critical titer levels for different ratios of upstream to dowstream trains where multiple parallel columns per step resulted in the removal of facility bottlenecks were identified. Different facility configurations in terms of number of upstream trains were considered and the trade-off between their cost and ability to handle higher titers was analyzed. The case study insights demonstrate that the proposed modeling approach, combining MINLP models with visualization tools, is a valuable decision-support tool for the design of cost-effective facility configurations and to aid facility fit decisions. Distributed energy resource short-term scheduling using Signaled Particle Swarm Optimization

Distributed Energy Resources (DER) scheduling in smart grids presents a new challenge to system operators. The increase of new resources, such as storage systems and demand response programs, results in additional computational efforts for optimization problems. On the other hand, since natural resources, such as wind and sun, can only be precisely forecasted with small anticipation, short-term scheduling is especially relevant requiring a very good performance on large dimension problems. Traditional techniques such as mixed-integer non-linear programming (MINLP) do not cope well with large scale problems. This type of problems can be appropriately addressed by metaheuristics approaches. This paper proposes a new methodology called Signaled Particle Swarm Optimization (SiPSO) to address the energy resources management problem in the scope of smart grids, with intensive use of DER. The proposed methodology's performance is illustrated by a case study with 99 distributed generators, 208 loads, and 27 storage units. The results are compared with those obtained in other methodologies, namely MINLP, Genetic Algorithm, original Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Evolutionary PSO, and New PSO. SiPSO performance is superior to the other tested PSO variants, demonstrating its adequacy to solve large dimension problems which require a decision in a short period of time. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. A new approach to generation scheduling in interconnected power systems using predictor-corrector proximal multiplier method

The purpose of this paper is to elaborate a new generation scheduling algorithm in the interconnected power systems. Typically, the generation scheduling problem as a mixed integer non-linear programming can be effectively solved by the generalized Benders decomposition technique which decouples an original problem into the master problem and subproblems to tremendously allow fast and accurate solutions of large-scale problems. In order to formulate efficient inter-temporal optimal power flow (OPF) subproblems, we will explore a regional decomposition framework based on predictor-corrector proximal multiplier method. In fact, this scheme can find the most economic generation schedules under the power transactions for a multi-utility system without the exchange of each utility's own private information and major disruption to existing economic dispatch or OPF adopted by individual utilities.

Probabilistic approach for optimal allocation of wind-based distributed generation in distribution systems

Recent development in small renewable/clean generation technologies such as wind turbines, photovoltaic, fuel cells, microturbines and so on has drawn distribution utilities' attention to possible changes in the distribution system infrastructure and policy by deploying distributed generation (DG) in distribution systems. In this study, a methodology has been proposed for optimally allocating wind-based DG units in the distribution system so as to minimise annual energy loss. The methodology is based on generating a probabilistic generation-load model that combines all possible operating conditions of the wind-based DG units and load levels with their probabilities, hence accommodating this model in a deterministic planning problem. The planning problem is formulated as mixed integer non-linear programming (MINLP), with an objective function for the system's annual energy losses minimise. The constraints include voltage limits at different buses (slack and load buses) of the system, feeder capacity, discrete size of the DG units, maximum investment on each bus, and maximum penetration limit of DG units. This proposed technique is applied to a typical rural distribution system and compared to the traditional planning technique (constant output power of DG units and constant peak load profile).

Long- and Short-Run supply-chain optimization models for the allocation and congestion management of containerized imports from Asia to the United States

Analytical models are introduced for predicting the allocation to ports and transportation channels of containerized goods imported from Asia to the USA. Assuming fixed distributions for container flow-times, the Long-Run Model heuristically solves a mixed integer non-linear program to determine the least-cost supply-chain strategies for importers. The Short-Run Model uses estimates of the flow times as a function of traffic volumes on fixed infrastructure to iteratively develop the best near-term strategies. Minimum volume requirements and capacities for ports and landside channels are considered. The models are applied to predict the effects of container fees at the San Pedro Bay ports. A supply-chain optimization model of the allocation of containerized imports from Asia to the United States

This article proposes a mixed integer non-linear programming model for the optimizing supply chains of importers of waterborne containerized goods from Asia to the USA. This model determines the least-cost strategy for an importer, in terms of ports and landside transportation modes to be used, where costs considered include costs for transportation and handling, pipeline inventory, and safety-stock. We introduce a heuristic algorithm to quickly solve the mathematical model to near optimality. We assess the proposed heuristic compared to use of a commercial solver, and provide general recommendations for efficient supply-chain strategies as a function of the value of imported goods. Planar expropriation problem with non-rigid rectangular facilities

In this paper, we introduce the planar expropriation problem with non-rigid rectangular facilities. The facilities considered in this study are two-dimensional facilities of rectangular shape. Moreover, we allow the facility dimensions to be decision variables and introduce the concept of non-rigid facilities. Based on the geometric properties of such facilities, we developed a new formulation for this continuous covering location model which does not require employing distance measures. This model is intended to determine the location and formation of facilities simultaneously. For solving this new model, we proposed a continuous branch-and-bound framework utilizing linear approximations for the tradeoff curve associated with the facility formation alternatives. Further, we developed new problem generation and bounding strategies suitable for our particular problem structure. Computational experience shows that the branch-and-bound procedure we developed performs better than conventional mixed-integer nonlinear programming solvers BARON and SBB for solving this particular location model.
