Optimal heat exchanger network synthesis with the detailed heat transfer equipment design

This paper presents an optimisation model for the synthesis of heat exchanger networks (HEN) including the detailed design of the equipments formulated as a decomposition method. Shell and tube pressure drops and fouling are considered, as well as mechanical aspects, like shell and tube bundle diameters, internal and external diameter of tubes, number of tubes, number of baffles, number of shells, tube length, tube arrangement and the fluid allocation in the heat exchanger. The optimisation model is based on area, energy and pumping costs. The algorithm combines two distinct models, in a decomposition method, a mixed integer non-linear programming (MINLP) superstructure simultaneous optimisation model for the heat exchanger network synthesis considering stream splitting and a MINLP model for the detailed equipment design, following rigorously the standards of the TEMA. Two examples from the literature are used to test the algorithm developed, and the results confirm the achievement of the optimum HEN configuration with the detailed heat exchangers design, following the TEMA standards. New secure bilateral transaction matrix determination using AC distribution factors and impact of TCPAR and TCSC on its pattern

In the competitive electricity environment, a large number of transactions are expected to be negotiated, which can compromise the system security and reliabili ty. According to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) order 889, only those transactions that should be settled are within the permissible limits of a vaila ble transfer capability (ATC). Therefore, it has become essential to determine secure transactions occurring in the new environment for better planning and management of open access environment. This article proposes a new method of secure bilateral transaction determination using AC distribution factors. The bilateral transaction matrix pattern has been determined in the presence of thyristor-controlled phase angle regulator (TCPAR) and thyristor-controlled series compensator (TCSC). The optimal location of CPAR and TCSC has been determined using the mixed integer non- linear programming approach. The bilateral transaction matrix has been determined in a hybrid market model. The proposed technique has been applied on IEEE 24-bus reliability test system (RTS).

Water network synthesis using mutation-enhanced particle swarm optimization

Different techniques for the synthesis of industrial water reuse/recycle networks have been developed in recent process integration research. These tools range from graphical pinch analysis approaches to mathematical programming models. The latter have the advantage of being flexible enough to incorporate various water network constraints, but in many cases these are often non-linear, thus making the identification of global optima difficult. Recent work has demonstrated the effectiveness of metaheuristic algorithms such as particle swarm optimization (PSO), for finding good solutions these problems. This work describes the use of a modified PSO for solving mixed integer non-linear programming (MINLP) models for water network synthesis. By incorporating a mutation operator for the binary variables in the model, the algorithm is able to escape sub-optimal network topologies and proceed towards better solutions than can be found with ordinary PSO. Two case studies involving water recycle/reuse are used to demonstrate the new design methodology.

The sustainability of water resources is one of the major concerns of the world. Industries are finding ways to minimize water costs and to reduce water pollution through efficient use of supplies. One of effective solutions is the use of water pinch technology or process integration techniques. Property integration emerged as the third trend of process integration technique ( aside from energy and mass integration) to solve the problem of water network synthesis by considering physical stream properties such as pH or resistivity. Various techniques have been done to solve this property-based problem. In this paper, mixed integer non-linear programming (MINLP) problems with topological constraints is studied. Nowadays, various evolutionary algorithms are also used to solve such MINLP problems. In this study, particle swarm optimization is used to solve the property integration problem. A comparison is made between this algorithm and commercial genetic algorithm (GA) applications. Particle swarm optimization is observed to perform favorably compared to GA.

This paper proposes a new method of optimal number and location of TCSC using mixed integer non-linear programming approach in the deregulated electricity markets. Optimal number and location of TCSC controller can effectively enhance system loadability and their placement is a crucial issue due to their high cost. Since, in the competitive electricity environment more and more transactions are negotiated, which can compromise the system security. Therefore, it has become essential to determine secure transactions occurring in the new environment for better planning and management. The system loadability has been determined in a hybrid market model utilizing the secure transaction matrix. The proposed technique has been tested on IEEE 24-bus reliability test system (RTS).

In a deregulated power industry, the real time pricing of real and reactive power has emerged as an important issue to create fair open access in the electricity markets. These prices have a great impact on efficient and economic operation of electricity markets. Their accurate determination can send the signal for secure operation of the system. In this paper, the effect of optimally located FACTS devices: Static VAR Compensator (SVC), Thyristor Controlled Series Capacitor (TCSC) and Thyristor Controlled Phase Angle Regulator (TCPAR) on real time prices has been studied. A mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) based model is proposed for optimal placement of FACTS devices along with calculating active and reactive power marginal prices for an WEE 14 bus system. The impact of placing FACTS devices on marginal prices and social welfare is observed. The cost of FACTS devices has also been considered for the study.

A Lagrangian augmented Hopfield network for mixed integer non-linear programming problems

The augmented Lagrangian function has better convergence and solution properties for mixed integer non-linear programming problems than either standard Lagrangian function, or penalty function approaches. The Hopfield neural network based approaches that have been proposed to solve this function have used continuous neurons to represent discrete variables. The augmented Hopfield network has both discrete and continuous neurons. Here a Lagrangian augmented Hopfield network (LAHN) is constructed by including augmented Lagrangian multiplier neurons in the augmented Hopfield network. This new network is applied to the generator scheduling problem (a mixed integer non-linear programming problem) and results illustrate that improved solutions are obtained. Evolutionary algorithms approach to the solution of mixed integer non-linear programming problems

The global optimization of mixed integer non-linear problems (MINLP), constitutes a major area of research in many engineering applications. In this work, a comparison is made between an algorithm based on Simulated Annealing (M-SIMPSA) and two Evolutionary Algorithms: Genetic Algorithms (GAs) and Evolution Strategies (ESs). Results concerning the handling of constraints, through penalty functions, with and without penalty parameter setting, are also reported. Evolutionary Algorithms seem a valid approach to the optimization of non-linear problems. Evolution Strategies emerge as the best algorithm in most of the problems studied. Formulation and motion planning of the peg-in-hole task with mixed logical dynamical system theory

It is well known that most assembly skills can be regarded as one of the signal-symbol hybrid dynamical systems, since. the interactive dynamics between the end-effector and the environment change according to contact configurations (geometrical constraints). In this paper, we first propose a model of the peg-in-hole task, which is known as a typical assembly task. mixed logical dynamical system theory is adopted to formulate the peg-in-hole task, and an optimal solution with both continuous and logical variables under an objective function is found systematically. Then, a OF strategy to find the optimal solution with less computation is proposed. Finally, some planning results for the peg-in-hole task are shown in order to verify the usefulness of the proposed method.
