An outer-approximation algorithm for the solution of multiparametric MINLP problems

Process synthesis problems involving uncertainty can be mathematically represented as multiparametric mixed integer nonlinear programming(mp-MINLP) models. In this paper, we present an outer-approximation algorithm for the solution of such mp-MINLPs, described by convex process models, linear in the vectors of binary variables and uncertain parameters. The algorithm follows decomposition principles, i.e., constructing a converging sequence of valid upper and lower bounds through the solution of parametric primal and master subproblems. The solution is characterized in different sub-domains of the uncertain parameter space by (i) linear parametric profiles, and (ii) the corresponding integer solutions. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. This article introduces RENS, the relaxation enforced neighborhood search, a large neighborhood search algorithm for mixed integer nonlinear programs (MINLPs). It uses a sub-MINLP to explore the set of feasible roundings of an optimal solution x of a linear or nonlinear relaxation. The sub-MINLP is constructed by fixing integer variables x(j) with (x) over bar (j) is an element of Z and bounding the remaining integer variables to xj. {[(x) over bar (j)], [(x) over bar (j)]}. We describe two different applications of RENS: as a stand-alone algorithm to compute an optimal rounding of the given starting solution and as a primal heuristic inside a complete MINLP solver. We use the former to compare different kinds of relaxations and the impact of cutting planes on the so-called round-ability of the corresponding optimal solutions. We further utilize RENS to analyze the performance of three rounding heuristics implemented in the branch-cut-and-price framework SCIP. Finally, we study the impact of RENS when it is applied as a primal heuristic inside SCIP. All experiments were performed on three publicly available test sets of mixed integer linear programs (MIPs), mixed integer quadratically constrained programs (MIQCPs), and MINLPs, using solely software which is available in source code. It turns out that for these problem classes 60 to 70% of the instances have roundable relaxation optima and that the success rate of RENS does not depend on the percentage of fractional variables. Last but not least, rens applied as primal heuristic complements nicely with existing primal heuristics in SCIP.

Energy is the impediment to various applications of battery-powered wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Beyond the battery constraint of sensors/aggregation and forwarding nodes (AFNs), the major energy consumption of WSNs is from the long-distance multi-hop transmissions from the sensors/AFNs to the sink. To address these issues, in this paper, we employ a wireless charging vehicle (WCV) to travel inside WSNs to replenish the energy of sensors/AFNs, and cut long-distance transmissions into short-distance ones. Different from prior works, we let the WCV not only recharge the AFNs selectively, but also collect data from chosen AFNs and bring collected data back to the sink. The chosen AFNs play as virtual sinks, and nearby AFNs can use short-distance transmissions to deliver their traffic to the chosen AFNs. We formulate this problem into an energy replenishment optimization with joint consideration of sensed data delivery, flow routing, wireless power transfer, etc. Since the formulated problem is mixed integer nonlinear programming which is NP-hard to solve, we also develop a heuristic algorithm for feasible solutions. Through simulations, we show that the solution of the proposed algorithm is close to the optimal one and the energy replenishment is optimized while data delivery guaranteed.

A specialized genetic algorithm with a adaptation of Chu-Beasley algorithm is presented in this paper to solve the electrical distribution distribution system expansion planning (DSP) problem modeled by a mixed integer nonlinear programming problem. The specialized genetic algorithm proposed in this paper starting from a initial population where all elements have a radial topology found using a heuristic algorithm and after the selection and mutation operations must also go through a local improvement in order to make the proposed solution in a feasible solution, if necessary, with respect to operational constraints. The DSP problem presented in this paper consider the circuit construction/recondutoring for different types of conductors and the substation construct/reinforcement. To evaluate the quality of the proposed methodology were used three different test systems found in the literature, 23, 54 and 136 buses systems.

The evolution of both optimization methods and application fields in chemical engineering are presented in this paper. The study was carried out on three Escape Conferences, ESCAPE 1, ESCAPE 4 and ESCAPE 8. The use of classical mathematical programming approaches, like NLP, MILP and MINLP has reached a cruising speed, even when Linear or Successive Linear programming methods are less and less used. Due to the highly combinatorial nature of many problems, Simulated Annealing and Genetic Algorithms begin to compete with mathematical programming approaches. For optimal control purposes, Neural Networks appear to be an efficient tool. Continuous and batch process optimization and design always constitute a privileged application field of optimization procedures, but some recent classes of problems, like batch plant scheduling, thermodynamics, kinetics, molecular modeling and aided mixture design appear to emerge as new application fields.

Synthetic biology aims at engineering synthetic circuits with pre-defined target functions. From a systems (model-based) perspective, the following problems are of central importance: (1) given the model of a biomolecular circuit, elucidate whether it is capable of a certain behavior/functionality; and (2) starting from a pre-defined required functionality and a library of biological parts, find the biomolecular circuit that, built as a combination of such parts, achieves the desired behavior. These two problems, framed, respectively, as nonlinear analysis and automated design problems, are tackled here by efficient optimization methods. We illustrate these methods with case studies considering the analysis and design of biocircuits capable of bistability (bistable switches). Bistability is of particular interest in the context of systems and synthetic biology because it endows cells with the capacity to make decisions. less

To handle the detrimental effects brought by leakage of radioactive gases at nuclear power station, we propose a bus based evacuation optimization problem. The proposed model incorporates the following four constraints, 1) the maximum dose of radiation per evacuee, 2) the limitation of bus capacity, 3) the number of evacuees at demand node（bus pickup stop）,4) evacuees balance at demand and shelter nodes, which is formulated as a mixed integer nonlinear programming（MINLP）problem. Then, to eliminate the difficulties of choosing a proper M value in Big-M method, a Big-M free method is employed to linearize the nonlinear terms of the MINLP problem. Finally, the resultant mixed integer linear program（MILP） problem is solvable with efficient commercial solvers such as CPLEX or Gurobi, which guarantees the optimal evacuation plan *** evaluate the effectiveness of proposed evacuation model, we test our model on two different scenarios（a random one and a practical scenario）. For both scenarios, our model attains executable evacuation plan within given 3600 seconds computation time.

To strengthen management of supply chain and increase its efficiency, how to step up the research on supply chain distribution network system has become a major topic on logistics. As traditional logistics can no longer suit the requirements for great circulation due to a waste of resources, it is necessary for us to establish distribution systems with network structure, which are composed of some nodes and lines, whose activities serve as a foundation of supply chain distribution system activity. Whether network design is sound or not will play a decisive role in the rationalization of the whole distribution system and social benefits from circulation of materials. Meanwhile it is also an issue of business investment decision of strategic significance. This paper attempts to make an approach to network optimization of the distribution system with multi-source and multi-product. while in the place of demand only small distribution outlets are set up, each of which will no longer establish and manage its own warehouse. Instead more energy will be concentrated on trading of goods with only one DC attending to supply. After overall consideration of such factors as inventory costs and distribution time, a time-constrained location model for distribution system with multi-source and multi-product is developed with a nonlinear programming approach and an optimum solution to the model with different constraint conditions is found using LINGO software in Microsoft Office. In this way the problems of quantity, location, scale and quantity of distributed products in the distribution center with network structure are solved preliminarily, thereby increasing the efficiency of supply chain.
