In this study, a mathematical model for the integration of lot sizing and flow shop scheduling with lot streaming was proposed. A mixed-integer linear model for multi-product lot sizing and lot streaming problem was developed. mixed-integer programming formulation is proposed which will enable user to identify optimal production quantities, inventory levels, sub lot sizes and sequences simultaneously. Two situations where considered: 1) all machines are available and 2) all machines need preventive maintenance tasks. For both situations a new mixed-integer formulation is developed. To demonstrate the practicality of the proposed model, numerical example was used. It is shown that, the best makespan can be achieved through consistent sublots with intermingling cases as compared to non-intermingling cases. © Maxwell Scientific Organization, 2014.

In this dissertation, we study the design and planning of bio-energy supply chain networks. This dissertation consists of 3 studies that focus on different aspects of bio-energy supply chain systems. In the first study, we consider planning and design of an extended supply chain for bio-energy networks in an integrated fashion while simultaneously addressing strategic and tactical decisions pertaining to location, production, inventory, and distribution in a multi-period planning horizon setting. For an efficient solution of our model, we suggest a Benders Decomposition based algorithm that can handle realistic size problems for design and analysis purposes. We provide computational results that demonstrate the efficiency of the solution approach on a wide ranging set of problem instances. Furthermore, we develop a realistic case by utilizing data pertaining to the state of Texas and conduct an extensive analysis on the effects of varying input parameters on the design outcomes for a bio-energy supply chain network. In the second study, we consider a two-stage stochastic problem to model farm-to-biorefinery biomass logistics while designing a policy that encourages farmers to plant biomass energy crops by offering them a unit wholesale price. In the first-stage, the model determines the supply chain network structure as well as the policy parameter, which is the biomass wholesale price offered to farmers. Second-stage problem is to determine the logistical decisions such as transportation, salvaging and out-sourcing. To solve this problem, we propose a solution framework that uses an algorithm based on the L-shaped method along with a Sample Average Approximation (SAA) approach. An extensive case study by varying some of the problem input parameters is conducted in Texas and the effects on the policy parameter (wholesale price), supply chain network design and expected total system cost are observed. The increasingly challenging and dynamic nature of manufacturing industry has driven organizations to enhance their system efficiency. One of the most important aspects in manufacturing plant is the Material Transportation System (MTS). In order to address dynamic factors, MTS need to be equipped with rescheduling capability. This paper focuses on reactive transportation task assignment to a fleet of autonomous Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs). This paper proposes a mixed integer programming method to reschedule transportation tasks for a non-disruptive job shop manufacturing system based on Multi Agent System (MAS) architecture. The result shows that proposed rescheduling method is able to outperform conventional method significantly.

Network virtualization is an approach to providing heterogeneous and customized networks on a shared physical networking infrastructure. Virtual network mapping is a critical step in network virtualization, which determines the assignment of logical nodes and links to physical resources. The prime objective in the mapping algorithm is to utilize bandwidth, processing capacity, etc. efficiently in the physical substrate. Delay between virtual nodes has not been considered by existing state-of-the-art virtual network mapping algorithms. The objective of our work is to make network virtualization useful for real-time and delay-sensitive applications. In this paper, we present a virtual network mapping algorithm that considers the tradeoffs between low application delay and efficient substrate utilization. We use a mixed integer programming formulation to solve mapping problems. Our simulation results show that our algorithm achieves mappings with lower end-to-end delay while efficiently utilizing the network substrate.

Optimization of data and acknowledgement (ACK) packets' transmission power levels is necessary to prolong the lifetime of wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Utilizing the maximum power level available results in the minimum level of handshake failures, however, such a strategy will also result in energy waste because it may not be necessary to utilize the maximum power level at each link. Alternatively, the optimal data and ACK packet transmission levels can be determined for each link that minimizes the energy cost of handshaking. Accomplishing this task requires that the packet failure rates for each combination of power levels for data and ACK packets are measured through a close loop scheme which brings extra overhead when compared to the strategy of employing the highest power level. In this paper, we propose a novel strategy based on random power level assignments that do not require the overhead necessary to measure the handshake failure rate, yet, at the same time performs better than the maximum power level assignment strategy. To evaluate the performance of the proposed strategy we built a novel mixed integer programming (MIP) framework. Our results show that random power assignment performs better than maximum power assignment in terms of network lifetime.

In wireless sensor networks, nodes having limited battery resources convey data to an energy-unconstrained base station. The amount of data transmitted by a node usually depends on how much local processing is performed. In other words, more computation on a node means less communication with the base station and vice versa. Hence improving energy efficiency and prolonging the network lifetime requires a careful trade-off analysis. This analysis may be performed at a network-level or at a node-level. The latter is more fine-grained allowing different nodes to implement different solutions. In our work, we propose a novel mixed integer programming framework to model and optimize node-level strategies. Using this framework, we show that hybrid use of digital signature algorithms in a network could extend the lifetime up to 21.25% as compared to a network-level optimal strategy where all nodes use a single algorithm.

This paper presents a novel approach for modeling and predicting the dynamics of blood oxygenation signals (SpO(2)). A performance metric based on a dynamically adjusted threshold is optimized to fit the SpO(2) predictive model by maximizing its ability to predict abnormal desaturation events. While we use a predictive model structure that is discrete time autoregressive, we formulate fitting this model structure as a mixed integer programming problem (MIP) and we optimize the models to maximize multi-step ahead predictions of abnormal events. Our results show that the proposed model is better able to capture the dynamic behavior for abnormal changes of SpO(2) compared to standard autoregressive models. This study provides a starting point for further needed investigation in prediction of physiological systems behavior.

Following up on our previous work, we formulate a linear, loss-adjusted, shift factor mixed integer program (MIP) to co-optimize generation and network topology. While both the B. and shift factor topology control (TC) formulations lead to production cost saving, we showed that the shift factor formulation performs better for small to medium switchable sets. In this paper we extend the original TC shift factor formulation to include marginal losses. We derive loss-adjusted shift factors and show that both losses and flows can be updated linearly with a change in topology by taking advantage of flow-canceling transactions (FCTs). The marginal loss formulation we present in this paper closely resembles that of most market engines. In doing so, we aim to better approximate the AC power flow and to generate topologies leading to production cost savings while maintaining feasibility subject to AC security constrained power flow (SCOPF) constraints.

The cost for bunker fuel represents a major part of the daily running costs of liner shipping vessels. The vessels, sailing on a fixed roundtrip of ports, can lift bunker at these ports, having differing and fluctuating prices. The stock of bunker on a vessel is subject to a number of operational constraints such as capacity limits, reserve requirements and sulphur content. Contracts are often used for bunker purchasing, ensuring supply and often giving a discounted price. A contract can supply any vessel in a period and port, and is thus a shared resource between vessels, which must be distributed optimally to reduce overall costs. The Bunker Purchasing with Contracts Problem has been formulated as a mixed integer programme, which has been Dantzig-Wolfe decomposed. To solve it, a novel column generation algorithm has been developed. The algorithm has been run on a series of real-world instances with up to 500+ vessels and 500+ contracts, and provide near optimal solutions. This makes it possible for a major liner shipping company to plan bunker purchasing on a global level, and provides an efficient tool for assessing new contracts.

The multi-objective TT&C (Tracking, Telemetry and Command) mission planning technique is studied based on the background of both ground-based and space-based TT&C mission to the OOS (On-Orbit Service) type of "one-station to multi-objective". Firstly, the characteristics and constraint condition of OOS TT&C mission are analyzed. Secondly, the space-based and ground-based TT&C mission planning models are established. Finally, using typical OOS mission as an example, the method of TT&C resource planning is simulated for ground-based multi-objective and ISL (Inter-Satellite Link). The optimized design of TT&C events, optimization scheduling of TT&C resources and automatic implementation strategies of TT&C operations are included to the TT&C mission in this paper. The research results show that the ground-based TT&C resource can be saved by using of space-based TT&C resource. The technical reference can be provided for the implementation of future spacecraft OOS by the research results.
