MILP formulation improvement with k-means clustering for the beam layout optimization in multibeam satellite systems

This paper addresses an NP-hard design optimization problem in a multibeam satellite communication system. This problem consists in designing irregular beam layouts to satisfy non-uniform user traffic demands over the satellite service area, under antenna constraints, satellite payload constraints and a telecommunication mission criterion. Efficiently solving this problem is of crucial importance due to its impact on the system performance and cost. We compare three mixed-integer linear programming formulations. The first one, issued from previous work, is based on a linearization of both convex and non-convex Euclidean distance constraints. The two other aim at reducing the solution space size and at breaking symmetry inherent to the first formulation. For that purpose, we introduce a new process to interface k-means clustering with mixed-integer linear programming. We examine an exact and a heuristic approach for exploiting these principles that yield two new formulations. The heuristic approach outperforms the others based on our tests on a set of large-scale realistic problem instances, allowing to use mixed-integer linear programming in the industrial context.

Modeling and solving a real-world cutting stock problem in the marble industry via mathematical programming and stochastic diffusion search approaches

In this study, one-dimensional marble plane cutting problem is studied based on the cutting equipment productivity and effective use of marble blocks. Different types of marble planes should be cut from multiple stock sized marble blocks in parallel by using a stone block-cutting machine (gang saw). Marble blocks, which have different dimensions, and quality gradations are supplied by the marble processing factory's own marble quarries. Different quality gradations of the marble blocks and cutting equipment productivity need to be taken into account in addition to minimize the total trim loss or cost in modelling the present cutting problem. The nature of the production process in the marble industry consists of large amount of waste. Minimizing the amount of waste can be controlled indirectly by establishing an appropriate cutting plan. Therefore, minimization of the total cost of transportation and overgrading (supplying higher quality material than specified by the customer) while determining a suitable cutting plan for the marble blocks is aimed. A mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model is developed for solving the present marble plane cutting problem for small-size instances. The salient feature of the developed model is not requiring a priori enumeration of all possible cutting patterns and to permit generation of retail to reuse. For larger size problem instances a Stochastic Diffusion Search (SDS) algorithm is developed. Extensive computational studies are performed by using test instances, which are collected from a marble processing company operating at Izmir. Multi-product and multi-period closed loop supply chain network design under take-back legislation

This paper addresses the closed loop supply chain (CLSC) network design problem for durable products with consideration of take-back legislation. Each returned end-of-life product can be dismantled into different components. A recovery option is adopted for each component based on its quality level, its economic value, and its environmental impact. First, a multi-product multi-period mixed integer linear programming (MIP) model is proposed while assuming a 100% recovery target. The latter is then extended in order to incorporate other take back legislations: namely, regulation based on other recovery targets and regulation based on reward-penalty (RP) mechanisms. Sensitivity analysis is then carried out in order to capture how some model parameters influence the take-back decision, the integration of the reverse supply chain, and its structure when there are no regulatory restrictions on the take-back of returns. In addition, the CLSC performance, in terms of environment and economic efficiency, is investigated under different take-back legislations. For the considered case study, a comparative study shows that a higher reverse service level and CLSC profit can be achieved when a regulation based on RP mechanism is implemented.

Reduction of Power Imbalances Using Battery Energy Storage System in a Bulk Power System with Extremely Large Photovoltaics Interactions

Power imbalances such as power shortfalls and photovoltaic (PV) curtailments have become a major problem in conventional power systems due to the introduction of renewable energy sources. There can be large power shortfalls and PV curtailments because of PV forecasting errors. These imbalances might increase when installed PV capacity increases. This study proposes a new scheduling method to reduce power shortfalls and PV curtailments in a PV integrated large power system with a battery energy storage system (BESS). The model of the Kanto area, which is about 30% of Japan's power usage with 60 GW grid capacity, is used in simulations. The effect of large PV power integration of 50 GW and 100 GW together with large BESS capacity of 100 GWh and 200 GWh has been studied. mixed integer linear programming technique is used to calculate generator unit commitment and BESS charging and discharging schedules. The simulation results are shown for two months with high and low solar irradiance, which include days with large PV over forecast and under forecast errors. The results reveal that the proposed method eliminates power shortfalls by 100% with the BESS and reduce the PV curtailments by 69.5% and 95.2% for the months with high and low solar irradiance, respectively, when 200 GWh BESS and 100 GW PV power generation are installed.

Autonomous Mission of Multi-UAV for Optimal Area Coverage

This study proposes an entire hardware and software architecture from operator input to motor command for the autonomous area coverage mission using multiple unmanned aerial vehicles. Despite the rapid growth of commercial drone services, there are many limitations on operations, such as a low decision-making autonomy and the need for experienced operators to intervene in the whole process. For performing the area coverage mission more efficiently and autonomously, this study newly designs an optimization problem that allocates waypoints created to cover that area to unmanned aerial vehicles. With an optimized list of waypoints, unmanned aerial vehicles can fill the given areas with their footprints in a minimal amount of time and do not overlap each other during the mission. In addition, this study performs both various simulations for quantitative analysis and an outdoor experiment through real hardware implementation in order to verify the performance sufficiently. The methodologies developed in this study could be applied to endless applications using unmanned aerial vehicles equipped with mission-specific sensors.

In this paper, we propose a novel hybrid strategy that combines mixed integer linear programming (MILP) formulation with different alternative routing approaches that is capable of solving, simultaneously, the routing, modulation format and spectrum assignment problem in the design of elastic optical networks. We extend our proposal to a path-link formulation that, although it is not guaranteed to find the optimal solution, it has shown reasonable solutions within inferior simulation time, allowing it to be used in not very short networks. We also compare our proposal with another MILP formulation and three adapted heuristics, all available in the literature. The results show the benefits of our proposal considering diverse simulation scenarios and different number of modulation formats over 19 realistic networks in terms of simulation run time and maximum number of used set of slots.

Optimal Design on Fossil-to-Renewable Energy Transition of Regional Integrated Energy Systems under CO₂ Emission Abatement Control: A Case Study in Dalian, China

Optimal design of regional integrated energy systems (RIES) offers great potential for better managing energy sources, lower costs and reducing environmental impact. To capture the transition process from fossil fuel to renewable energy, a flexible RIES, including the traditional energy system (TES) based on the coal and biomass based distributed energy system (BDES), was designed to meet a regional multiple energy demand. In this paper, we analyze multiple scenarios based on a new rural community in Dalian (China) to capture the relationship among the energy supply cost, increased share of biomass, system configuration transformation, and renewable subsidy according to regional CO2 emission abatement control targets. A mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model was developed to find the optimal solutions. The results indicated that a 40.58% increase in the share of biomass in the RIES was the most cost-effective way as compared to the separate TES and BDES. Based on the RIES with minimal cost, by setting a CO2 emission reduction control within 40%, the RIES could ensure a competitive total annual cost as compared to the TES. In addition, when the reduction control exceeds 40%, a subsidy of 53.83 to 261.26 RMB/t of biomass would be needed to cover the extra cost to further increase the share of biomass resource and decrease the CO2 emission.

An event-based reactive scheduling approach for the Resource Constrained Project Scheduling Problem with unreliable resources

The Resource Constrained Project Scheduling Problem (RCPSP) is a combinatorial optimization problem which is non-deterministic polynomial-time (NP)-hard in nature. Due to the diversified applications of RCPSPs, they have been commonly used as scheduling procedures in real-world problems. Since, in practice, project data are prone to changes or disruptions, this paper introduces a mathematical model for a reactive scheduling approach, called the Event Based Reactive Approach (EBRA). This proposed EBRA approach is employed to examine its recovery performance under both a single disruption and a series of independent resource disruptions. Several simulated disruption data are hypothesized to represent real-world disruption scenarios and, without loss of generality, the proposed reactive approach is proved to be efficient in reducing the number of variables and computational complexity and also to be resilient in realistic changes, such as duration inflation and dynamic resource usages. Along with employing an exact method by LINGO software, this paper also proposes an enhanced iterated greedy (EnIG) approach to meta-heuristically solve larger and computationally expensive benchmark instances taken from the Project Scheduling Library (PSPLIB).

A Study of Multi-Constraints Emergency Transportation Problem in Disaster Response

The paper studies a real-world Multi-Constraints Emergency Transportation Problem in disaster response under travel time uncertainty(MCETP), whose objective is to determine the set of flights and routes and the airplane and vehicle assignment for delivering necessary living supplies to disaster areas as quickly as possible. The MCETP can be modeled as a variant of the Vehicle Routing Problem (VRP), which considers a heterogeneous fleet with multi-depots delivering supplies to customers in order to minimize the maximal travel time of all routes where travel time of vehicles is predicted by experts because ground transportation network is destroyed and affected degree is unknown. By adding copy points and imaginary depots, the MCETP can be transformed into a variant of the Travelling Salesman Problem (TSP), for which a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) formulation is presented. With the proposed initial solution construction algorithm, vehicle assignment strategy and penalty function, the transformed problem can be solved by the extension of Lin-Kernighan-Helsgaun solver (LKH-3). Computational experiments on two sets of totally 50 instances show that the idea of transforming a challenging complex problem to a widely studied problem and using its state-of-the-art algorithm to solve the original problem is highly effective and efficient for the MCETP. Specifically, it can obtain the same solution quality as GUROBI but with much less time for small-scale instances. Furthermore, the proposed algorithm can solve large-scale instances while GUROBI fails to obtain a feasible solution in most cases in a reasonable time.

This paper studies a performance safety enforcing problem in stochastic event graphs, a subclass of stochastic Petri net models. We assume that an intruder can attack part of the transitions to increase/decrease their firing rate such that the performance of the system violates a given safety interval. The difficulty in solving this problem is that the capability of the intruder, i.e., the number of transitions that can be simultaneously attacked, is limited. The control aim is to find a protecting policy such that the performance of the protected plant is guaranteed to be in a given safety interval. We show that this problem can be formulated as a two-player game between the intruder and the operator of the plant. By using mixed integer linear programming technique, we develop a heuristic method to compute a protecting policy that is locally optimal. (C) 2021 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
