A MILP-based restoration planning method for generator start-up considering flexible re-energizing times of transmission lines

During power system restoration, the planning of the generator start-up sequence (GSUS) can significantly affect the restoration efficiency. However, a GSUS optimization model based on mixed integer linear programming (MILP) cannot satisfy the need for flexible re-energizing times of transmission lines and the serial restoration of generators. To solve this issue, a new MILP-based GSUS optimization model is proposed in this paper that can generate a serial GSUS scheme with flexible re-energizing times of transmission lines. The requirements of flexible re-energizing times of transmission lines and the serial restoration of the generators are formulated as restoration time constraints for the transmission lines, start-up time constraints for the buses on the restoration paths, and a serial restoration constraint, which are transformed into mixed integer linear constraints by means of auxiliary binary (0-1) decision variables. Meanwhile, the restart time constraints of the generators and the transient frequency requirements are modeled as mixed integer linear constraints. Finally, the performance of the proposed method is verified on the IEEE 39-bus system.

Integrated Space Logistics Mission Planning and Spacecraft Design with mixed-integer Nonlinear programming

This paper develops a campaign-level space logistics optimization framework that simultaneously considers mission planning and spacecraft design using mixed-integer nonlinear programming. In the mission planning part of the framework, deployment and utilization of in-orbit infrastructures, such as in-orbit propellant depots or in situ resource utilization plants, are also taken into account. Two methods are proposed: First, the mixed-integer nonlinear programming problem is converted into a mixed-integer linear programming problem after approximating the nonlinear model with a piecewise linear function and linearizing quadratic terms. In addition, another optimization framework is provided, based on simulated annealing, which separates the spacecraft model from mission planning formulation. An example mission scenario based on multiple Apollo missions is considered, and the results show a significant improvement in the initial mass in low Earth orbit by campaign-level design as compared with the traditional mission-level design. It is also shown that the mixed-integer linear programming-based method gives better-quality solutions than the simulated annealing-based method, although the simulated annealing method is more flexible for extension to a higher-fidelity spacecraft model.

The oil supply chain plays a vital role for both economic and social sectors in Algeria. Pipeline is the main oil transportation mode from production sites to distribution centers. However, finding the optimal schedule for a multi-product pipeline is among the most difficult optimization problems. In this article, we propose an operational schedule for a long-term horizon for a multi-product pipeline system. In our model, we link a refinery to multiple storage and distribution fuel centers. The proposed approach aims to satisfy the demands of different distribution centers in a timely manner by respecting quality and cost requirements. A mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model is proposed and solved by a branch and cut algorithm. Our model is tested on a real case of an Algerian oil company. The obtained schedule satisfies variable demand while respecting quality and cost requirements.

An Optimal Routing Algorithm for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles

A delivery service using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) has potential as a future business opportunity, due to its speed, safety and low-environmental impact. To operate a UAV delivery network, a management system is required to optimize UAV delivery routes. Therefore, we create a routing algorithm to find optimal round-trip routes for UAVs, which deliver goods from depots to customers. Optimal routes per UAV are determined by minimizing delivery distances considering the maximum range and loading capacity of the UAV. In order to accomplish this, we propose an algorithm with four steps. First, we build a virtual network to describe the realistic environment that UAVs would encounter during operation. Second, we determine the optimal number of in-service UAVs per depot. Third, we eliminate subtours, which are infeasible routes, using flow variables part of the constraints. Fourth, we allocate UAVs to customers minimizing delivery distances from depots to customers. In this process, we allow multiple UAVs to deliver goods to one customer at the same time. Finally, we verify that our algorithm can determine the number of UAVs in service per depot, round-trip routes for UAVs, and allocate UAVs to customers to deliver at the minimum cost.

An optimization framework for planning wayside and on-board hybrid storage systems for tramway applications

Electric mobility is gaining importance on pursuing decarbonisation of transport sector. In this context, electric tramways are recognised as a clean urban collective conveyance. Strong evidences manifest the advantages of storage systems in tramway applications. Despite its apparent benefits, the planning of such kind of systems for tramway applications has received few attention in literature. This work aims at filling this gap. To this end, a novel optimization framework for planning hybrid storage systems (batteries + super-capacitors) for tramway applications on either wayside or on-board configurations is developed, which incorporates an energy management tool to effectively coordinate the different storage technologies. Specific issues related with high resolution tramway demand measurements are addressed by using data dimensionality reduction techniques and temporal representation by representative trips. The new proposal is validated for a real Cuenca Ecuador tramway for which extensive simulations are carried out with different storage system layouts (super-capacitors, super-capacitors + batteries), and configurations (wayside and on-board) including different electrochemical batteries technologies (lead-acid, nickel cadmium and lithium ion). The results obtained show the benefits of storage systems in tramway facilities (in fact, the total cost of the project can be reduced by 71%), highlighting the importance of fast-acting technologies such as super-capacitors to handle high peak demand consumptions, while batteries are primarily dedicated to providing backup long-term storage capacity. Wayside and on-board configurations are also compared, revealing that total weight of the storage system suppose the main barrier for large capacity installation in on-board layouts.

A framework for tool-path airtime optimization in material extrusion additive manufacturing

Building time is an important issue in material extrusion-based additive manufacturing because in such a process head repositioning is always required between deposition segments (contours and rasters). The length of head repositioning, usually referred to as tool-path airtime or non-productive time, can be minimized by applying optimization algorithms. A particular issue in this area is the size of the problem to be solved. In this work, this problem is detailed and a framework for its decomposition and simplification is presented. The framework was divided in four (4) main steps and was designed to be used with different optimization methods. The first step was designed with some innovative methods to reduce the problem size. Hybrid mixed integer linear progreegramming (MILP) models were implemented to solve steps two (2) to four (4). Three cases of different complexities were analyzed and compared with the solution from a classic greedy optimization algorithm. The results show that the framework was effective in dealing with this problem and, particularly for the cases analyzed, it was possible to reduce the repositioning distance considerably over a non-optimized route and by greedy optimization (with the best case reaching 69% and 17.8%, respectively).

This article presents a mathematical model to optimize the planning decisions in the Colombian oil palm supply chain (SC). The optimization model consists of a mixed integer linear formulation, aiming at maximizing the expected net present value of the entire SC, including electricity supplied to the national grid by this activity. The model considers different products, types of warehouses, transportation modes, and export options, reflecting as far as possible the current situation of the oil palm industry in Colombia. It sets as free variables the location of the storage and production facilities, their expansion possibilities, and the flows of all feedstock and final products involved in the SC. The model constitutes a quantitative decision-making tool in the area of strategic design and optimal planning of biomass-based SCs. The optimal solution obtained by the model presents a more rational distribution of the production units in comparison with the current situation. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Recently, Energy Storage (ES) technologies have a crucial role in the power system. Additionally, increasing loads needs more capacity in the system and accordingly network expansion planning would be required. In this paper two aspects i.e. Microgrid aggregator and Energy Storage (ES) planning are integrated. It goes without saying that installing new ES capacities in the distribution level costs less than constructing new generators so considering ES, energy can be stored during extra production times and used when it is needed such that there is no need to pay for investment cost for new candidate components. Therefore, storing the extra production related to renewable resources is the goal of ES planning in this paper. An ES expansion approach in the presence of Microgrid aggregator is formulized linearly without using any approximation. Moreover, the effect of renewable resources such as wind turbines is considered and the effect of uncertainty related to renewable production in addition to load uncertainty are considered by a new stochastic model. A modified IEEE 6-Bus test system is implemented to illustrate the helpfulness of the presented model.

In last years, the energy efficiency in non-interconnected islands became an important topic, since the electricity production is often based on diesel generators, thus contributing to the global warming. Italian government recently emitted two decrees to promote the introduction of renewable energy technologies in 21 non-interconnected islands, both for electrical and thermal uses. In this paper, the economic and environmental feasibility of the introduction of renewable energies in the island of Pantelleria was assessed adopting an optimization approach. Furthermore, the flexibility provided from the local desalination plant and the domestic water heaters was evaluated. The final demands for electricity, air conditioning, domestic hot water and freshwater were analyzed, and the island was schematized as a multi-carrier energy hub and optimized through a mixed integer linear programming algorithm. Results prove that the renewable energies may provide a strong reduction of operating costs and greenhouse emissions of diesel generators in non-interconnected islands, although the optimal configurations differ according to the objective function of the optimization.

In large cities all around the world, individual and motorized traffic is still prevalent. This circumstance compromises the quality of living, and moreover, space inside cities for parking individual vehicles for movement is scarce and is becoming even scarcer. Thus, the need for a greener means of transportation and less individual vehicles inside the cities is demanded and rising. An already accepted and established solution possibility to these problems are public bike sharing systems (PBS). Such systems are often freely available to people for commuting within the city and utilize the available space in the city more efficiently than individual vehicles. When building or extending a PBS, a certain optimization goal is to place stations inside a city or a part of it, such that the number of bike trips per time unit is maximized under certain budget constraints. In this context, it is also important to consider rebalancing and maintenance costs as they introduce substantial supplementary costs in addition to the fixed and variable costs when building or extending a PBS. In contrast to the literature, this work introduces a novel approach which is particularly designed to scale well to large real-world instances. Based on our previous work, we propose a multilevel refinement heuristic operating on hierarchically clustered input data. This way, the problem is coarsened until a manageable input size is reached, a solution is derived, and then step by step extended and refined until a valid solution for the whole original problem instance is obtained. As an enhancement to our previous work, we introduce the following extensions. Instead of considering an arbitrary integral number of slots for stations, we now use sets of predefined station configurations. Moreover, a local search is implemented as refinement step in the multilevel refinement heuristic and we now consider real-world input data for the city of Vienna.
