Multi criteria dynamic design optimization of a small scale distributed energy system

The aim of this paper is to analyze the mutual interdependencies and trade-offs between heat storage and district heating network considering economic and ecological aspects. Therefore, a MILP (mixed integer linear programming) problem of a distributed energy system is formulated with a weighted multi-criteria objective function including profit and operational CO2 emissions. The considered components include CHP (combined heat and power) units of three different types, a thermal storage facility, a boiler, and district heating pipelines. In a single optimization step placement, quantity and capacity of all components as well as their operation is determined. The computed designs as well as the operation of the energy system are compared under varying weightings and different technology scenarios. We also conduct a sensitivity analysis of the investment costs associated with heat storage and of the piping costs for the district heating network. The results favor the construction of heat storage devices over a district heating network. This applies to both environmental impact and cost of energy supply and can be well explained by the decoupling of heat demand and electricity production, which is shown in a correlation analysis. If railway companies ask for station capacity numbers, their underlying question is in fact one about the platformability of extra trains. Train platformability depends not only on the infrastructure, buffer times, and the desired departure and arrival times of the trains, but also on route durations, which depend on train speeds and lengths, as well as on conflicts between routes at any given time. We consider all these factors in this paper. We assume a current train set and a future one, where the second is based on the expected traffic increase through the station considered. The platforming problem is about assigning a platform to each train, together with suitable in-and out-routes. Route choices lead to different route durations and imply different in-route-begin and out-route-end times. Our module platforms the maximum possible weighted sum of trains in the current and future train set. The resulting number of trains can be seen as the realistic capacity consumption of the schedule. Our goal function allows for current trains to be preferably allocated to their current platforms. Our module is able to deal with real stations and train sets in a few seconds and has been fully integrated by Infrabel, the Belgian Infrastructure Management Company, in their application called Ocapi, which is now used to platform existing and projected train sets and to determine the capacity consumption. Composite generation and transmission expansion planning considering distributed generation

This paper presents a model for use in the problem of composite generation and transmission expansion planning considering distributed generation. Generation expansion planning is defined as the problem of determining what capacity, which, and when new generating units should be constructed over a long range planning horizon, to satisfy the expected energy demand using single nodal generation planning model. Then, the place of every planned generating units and distributed generation is determined simultaneous with transmission expansion planning considering nonuniform geographical fuel supply cost and potential of distributed generation technology. The problem is formulated as a mixed-integer linear programming. By allocating the overall generation capacity among the grid nodes and determining the new transmission element additions along the planning horizon, the overall cost of the system is minimized. To assess the capabilities of the proposed approach, the Iranian Power Grid as a large scale system is considered. The effectiveness of the proposed modifications is illustrated in detail. Deadlock-Free Consecutive Task Assignment of Multiple Heterogeneous Unmanned Aerial Vehicles

This paper presents an integrated approach based on graph theory for solving the deadlock problem in the cooperative task assignment of multiple heterogeneous unmanned aerial vehicles, which is concerned with the cooperative decision making and control. Because of heterogeneity, one task cannot be performed by arbitrary vehicles in the heterogeneous group. A vehicle that performs multiple tasks on targets needs to change its path, waiting for others if another vehicle that executes a former or simultaneous task has not finished or arrived. This creates risks of deadlock. Two or more vehicles may fall into a situation of infinite waiting due to shared resources and precedence constraints among various tasks. In this work, a task-precedence graph of solutions is constructed and analyzed for detecting deadlocks. And transposing operations are used to unlock solutions that involved in deadlocks. In addition, the topological sort of tasks is used in the path elongation of vehicles. Thus, deadlock-free solutions are obtained, and the path coordination is done. Computational experiments are conducted to check the performance of the approach, and the results validate the effectiveness.

A fix-and-optimize heuristic for the high school timetabling problem

The high school timetabling is a classical combinatorial optimization problem that takes a large number of variables and constraints into account Due to its combinatorial nature, solving medium and large instances to optimality is a challenging task. When resources are tight, it is often difficult to find even a feasible solution. Among the different requirements that are considered in Brazilian schools, two compactness requirements must be met on a teacher's schedule: the minimization of working days and the avoidance of idle timeslots. In this paper, we present a mixed integer linear programming model and a fix-and-optimize heuristic combined with a variable neighborhood descent method. Our method uses three different types of decompositions - class, teacher and day - in order to solve the high school timetabling problem. The method is able to find new best known solutions for seven instances, including three optimal ones. A comparison with results reported in the literature shows that the proposed fix-and-optimize heuristic outperforms state-of-the-art techniques for the resolution of the problem at hand. Models and strategies for efficiently determining an optimal vertical alignment of roads

Selecting an optimal vertical alignment while satisfying safety and design constraints is an important task during road construction. The amount of earthwork operations depends on the design of the vertical alignment, so a good vertical alignment can have a profound impact on final construction costs. In this research, we improve the performance of a previous mixed-integer linear programming model, and we propose a new quasi-network flow model. Both models use a piecewise quadratic curve to compute the minimum cost vertical alignment and take earthwork operations into account. The models consider several features such as side-slopes, and physical blocks in the terrain. In addition to improving the precision, we propose several techniques that speed up the search for a solution, so that it is possible to make interactive design tools. We report numerical tests that validate the accuracy of the models, and reduce the calculation time. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Effective Real-Time Unmanned Air Vehicle Path Planning in Presence of Threat Netting

A method of real-time path planning for unmanned air vehicles in a radar-guided surface-to-air missile (SAM) netting environment was proposed. First, a simplified threat netting model is established based on the probability of an UAV being detected by threats;then, the model of threat netting is integrated with models of SAMs. The first step in the path planning algorithm based on MPC is to construct a UAV state-space model. In the threat netting situation, a SAM may receive target information from other SAMs via a communication network. The completeness of transmitted information depends on the connective probability of the communication network, which depends on the network topology and capacity. The path planning problem is formulated as a model predictive control problem. Simulation results and the present analysis indicate that the presented threat netting model and path planning algorithm can compensate for the increase in the lethality of a particular threat.

Operational planning models for distribution networks

The design and optimisation of a logistic network deals with a wide set of decisions, e.g. the determination of the best location and capacity of the different logistic facilities (production plants, distribution centres, transit points, wholesalers, etc.), the allocation of the product demand coming from customers in presence (or absence) of fractionable flows of material, the determination of the best transportation mode (truck, rail, etc.) as well as loading and routing of vehicles. These decisions involve multiple stages of a distribution network: customers-regional distribution centres (RDC), RDCs-central distribution centres (CDC) and CDCs-production plants and sources, in presence of multiple products and the variable time (i.e. time-dependent product demand and flows of material). This paper presents a top-down methodology that joins the strategic planning, the tactical planning and the operational planning of distribution networks with a special focus on the development of effective heuristic methods to face the vehicle routing problem. Original models and heuristic algorithms for the operational planning are illustrated. The impact of the strategic and tactical decisions on the performance of the operational planning is evaluated by the application of the proposed hierarchical approach to two realistic case studies. Obtained results are illustrated in a what-if experimental analysis conducted on multiple problem settings and realistic scenarios.

A framework for home energy management and its experimental validation

With the Smart Grid revolution and the increasing interest in renewable energy sources, the management of the electricity consumption and production of individual households and small residential communities is becoming an essential element of new power systems. The electric energy chain can greatly benefit from a flexible interaction with end-users based on the optimization of load profiles and the exploitation of local generation and energy storage. This paper proposes a framework for the development of a complete energy management system for individual residential units and small communities of domestic users, taking into account both the power system and the final users' perspectives. All the main elements of the framework are considered, and contributions are provided on the users' habits profiling, electricity generation forecast, energy load, and storage optimization. Specifically, we propose a linear regression model to predict the photovoltaic panels production, a stochastic method to forecast the home appliances usage, and two optimization models to optimize the electricity management of residential users with the goal of minimizing their bills. The study shows that it is possible to reduce the energy bill of residential users through the electricity optimization driven by dynamic energy prices. Moreover, remarkable improvements of the electric grid efficiency can be achieved with the cooperation among users, confirming that services for the coordination of the demand of groups of users allow huge benefits on the power system performance.

Use of model predictive control for experimental microgrid optimization

In this paper we deal with the problem of efficiently optimizing microgrid operations while satisfying a time-varying request and operation constraints. Microgrids are subsystems of the distribution grid comprising sufficient generating resources to operate in isolation from the main grid, in a deliberate and controlled way. The Model Predictive Control (MPC) approach is applied for achieving economic efficiency in microgrid operation management. The method is thus applied to an experimental microgrid located in Athens, Greece: experimental results show the feasibility and the effectiveness of the proposed approach. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd.
