This paper analyzes how order batching policies impact on the bullwhip effect over a multi-echelon distribution supply chain facing cyclic demand. As a demand cycle is repeated over the time planning horizon, a wrapping around operator is considered and based on this a single cycle is required to represent the real problem. The problem consists on determining the optimal reordering plan, which minimizes the overall system operational costs while investigating which bullwhip measures are more adequate to control such type of systems. A mixed integer linear programming model is developed, which considers a multi-echelon inventory/distribution system formed by N-warehouses and M-retailers with lateral transshipments among warehouses and among retailers. A case study based on a real retailer distribution chain are presented and solved.

Joint employee weekly timetabling and daily rostering: A decision-support tool for a logistics platform

To deal with their highly variable workload, logistics companies make their task force flexible using multi-skilled employees, flexible working hours or short-term contracts. Together with the legal constraints and the handling equipments' capacities, these possibilities make personnel scheduling a complex task. This paper describes a model to support their chain of decisions from the weekly timetabling to the daily rostering (detailed task allocation). We divide the problem into three sub-problems depending on the type of decision to be made: (1) workforce dimensioning, (2) task allocation for a week, and (3) detailed rostering for a day. The three decisions are made sequentially, the output of a step being the input of the next one. Each step is modeled as a mixed integer linear program which is described and commented. The proposed models are tested with industrial data as well as generated instances. From the observations made in an industrial context, we show that our model is an actual management tool supporting the managers in their operational decisions. This tool is currently used by the company which provided us with the industrial data. Based on the results with the generated instances, we present the conditions under which the models can be solved within a reasonable amount of time, and we assess the robustness of the daily rostering when the input data changes. Full analysis of PRINTCIPHER with respect to invariant subspace attack: efficient key recovery and countermeasures

In this paper we investigate the invariant property of PRINTcipher initially discovered by Leander et al. in their CRYPTO 2011 paper. We provide a complete study of the attack and show that there exist 64 families of weak keys for PRINTcipher-48 and as many as 115,669 for PRINTcipher-96. Moreover, we show that searching the weak key space may be substantially sped up by splitting the search process into two consecutive steps. We show that for many classes of weak keys, key recovery can be done with very small time complexity in the chosen/known plaintext scenario. In fact, at least weak keys can be recovered in less than 10 s per key on a single PC. Still, effective countermeasures exist against the attack. On the methodological level, the method of finding all weak key families has value on its own. It is based on mixed integer linear programming and can be adapted to solving other interesting problems on similar ciphers.

Solving a Location, Allocation, and Capacity Planning Problem with Dynamic Demand and Response Time Service Level

Logistic systems with uncertain demand, travel time, and on-site processing time are studied here where sequential trip travel is allowed. The relationship between three levels of decisions: facility location, demand allocation, and resource capacity (number of service units), satisfying the response time requirement, is analysed. The problem is formulated as a stochastic mixed integer program. A simulation-based hybrid heuristic is developed to solve the dynamic problem under different response time service level. An initial solution is obtained from solving static location-allocation models, followed by iterative improvement of the three levels of decisions by ejection, reinsertion procedure with memory of feasible and infeasible service regions. Results indicate that a higher response time service level could be achieved by allocating a given resource under an appropriate decentralized policy. Given a response time requirement, the general trend is that the minimum total capacity initially decreases with more facilities. During this stage, variability in travel time has more impact on capacity than variability in demand arrivals. Thereafter, the total capacity remains stable and then gradually increases. When service level requirement is high, the dynamic dispatch based on first-come-first-serve rule requires smaller capacity than the one by nearest-neighbour rule.

This paper presents a hierarchical demand response (DR) bidding framework in the day-ahead energy markets which integrates customer DR preferences and characteristics in the ISO's market clearing process. In the proposed framework, load aggregators submit aggregated DR offers to the ISO which would centrally optimize final decisions on aggregators' DR contributions in wholesale markets. The hourly load reduction strategies include load shifting and curtailment and the use of onsite generation and energy storage systems. The ISO applies mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) to the solution of the proposed DR model in the day-ahead market clearing problem. The proposed model is implemented using a 6-bus system and the IEEE-RTS, and several studies are conducted to demonstrate the merits of the proposed DR model.

A network design model for biomass to energy supply chains with anaerobic digestion systems

Development and implementation of renewable energy systems, as a part of the solution to the worldwide increasing energy consumption, have been considered as emerging areas to offer an alternative to the traditional energy systems with limited fossil fuel resources and to challenge environmental problems caused by them. Biomass is one of the alternative energy resources and agricultural, animal and industrial organic wastes can be treated as biomass feedstock in biomass to energy conversion systems. This study aims to develop an effective supply chain network design model for the production of biogas through anaerobic digestion of biomass. In this regard, a mixed integer linear programming model is developed to determine the most appropriate locations for the biogas plants and biomass storages. Besides the strategic decisions such as determining the numbers, capacities and locations of biogas plants and biomass storages, the biomass supply and product distribution decisions can also be made by this model. Mainly, waste biomass is considered as feedstock to be digested in anaerobic digestion facilities. To explore the viability of the proposed model, computational experiments are performed on a real-world problem. Additionally, a sensitivity analysis is performed to account for the uncertainties in the input data to the decision problem. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Multi-product joint delivery planning in a retailers’ network under resource constraints

The main objective of the JRP (joint replenishment problem) is to build a delivery programme so as to satisfy local demands while minimising the total cost including ordering and storage costs. The classical nonlinear formulation of this problem can be seen as a multi-product and multi-site extension of the economic order quantity (EOQ) problem. If demand rates are fixed and known, the problem allows a periodic solution, in which an optimal delivery programme repeats indefinitely. In the unconstrained case, the delivery plan has two levels of periodicity: a global periodicity for the delivery sequence and a particular periodicity for each product and site. The main purpose of this paper is to combine in the same model grouping, transportation, and storage issues. Constraints on transportation capacity and routing are introduced in a linear reformulation of the problem, leading to a better coordination of delivery schedules with respect to products and sites. The superiority of the proposed method is that it provides the optimal route of delivery for each tour and permits minimisation of the maximal delivery capacity, whereas other existing methods could not offer such important features. © 2015, © 2015 Taylor & Francis.

On the Minimum Number of Units in Heat Exchanger Networks

The minimum number of units in a network has been proposed to be obtained using a very simple formula using graph theory (Hohmann, E. C. Ph.D. Thesis, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA, 1971.;Linnhoff, B. et al. Comput. Chem. Eng. 1979, 3, 295). This is done, usually, assuming that thermodynamic feasibility holds, especially in Pinch technology, where it is applied above and below the pinch, but also for cases where the pinch is ignored. While the failure of this formula is informally known in the community, to our knowledge no realistic counterexample was presented before. We provide such an industrial counterexample. In addition, we propose to use a recently developed MILP model (Barbaro, A., and Bagajewicz, M. Comput. Chem. Eng. 2005, 29, 1945) that guarantees finding the global minimum number of exchangers. Finally, we point out the large number of alternative solutions that real industrial problems may exhibit.

Optimizing Distributed Energy Resources and building retrofits with the strategic DER-CAModel

The pressuring need to reduce the import of fossil fuels as well as the need to dramatically reduce CO2 emissions in Europe motivated the European Commission (EC) to implement several regulations directed to building owners. Most of these regulations focus on increasing the number of energy efficient buildings, both new and retrofitted, since retrofits play an important role in energy efficiency. Overall, this initiative results from the realization that buildings will have a significant impact in fulfilling the 20/20/20-goals of reducing the greenhouse gas emissions by 20%, increasing energy efficiency by 20%, and increasing the share of renewables to 20%, all by 2020. The Distributed Energy Resources Customer Adoption Model (DER-CAM) is an optimization tool used to support DER investment decisions, typically by minimizing total annual costs or CO2 emissions while providing energy services to a given building or microgrid site. This paper shows enhancements made to DER-CAM to consider building retrofit measures along with DER investment options. Specifically, building shell improvement options have been added to DER-CAM as alternative or complementary options to investments in other DER such as PV, solar thermal, combined heat and power, or energy storage. The extension of the mathematical formulation required by the new features introduced in DER-CAM is presented and the resulting model is demonstrated at an Austrian Campus building by comparing DERCAM results with and without building shell improvement options. Strategic investment results are presented and compared to the observed investment decision at the test site. Results obtained considering building shell improvement options suggest an optimal weighted average U value of about 0.53 W/(m(2) K) for the test site. This result is approximately 25% higher than what is currently observed in the building, suggesting that the retrofits made in 2002 were not optimal. Furthermore, the results obtained with DER-CAM i

A multi-period mixed-integer linear optimisation of future electricity supply considering life cycle costs and environmental impacts

A multi-period mixed-integer linear programming model has been developed to help explore future pathways for electricity supply where costs and carbon reduction are a priority. The model follows a life cycle approach and can optimise on costs and on a number of environmental objectives. To illustrate the application, the model has been optimised on two objectives: whole system costs and global warming potential (GWP) using the UK as an example. Four different scenarios have been considered up to 2060, each assuming different electricity demand and carbon reduction targets. When optimising on system costs, they range from 156.6 pound bn for the least carbon-constrained scenario with moderate increase in electricity demand to 269.9 pound bn for the scenario with high demand and requiring 100% decarbonisation of electricity supply by 2035. In optimisation on GWP, negative carbon emissions are achieved in all scenarios, ranging from -0.5 to -1.28 Gt CO2 eq. over the period, owing to biomass carbon capture and storage. Optimising on the GWP also reduces significantly other environmental impacts at costs comparable to optimised costs. This research shows that meeting carbon targets will require careful planning and consideration of objectives other than costs alone to ensure that optimal rather than suboptimal solutions are found for a more sustainable electricity supply.
