This paper addresses the cyclic multi-hoist scheduling problem. The problem arises in automated electroplating lines where multiple hoists are operating on a shared track. The considered processing sequences may be different from the location sequence of the tanks and may contain loops, i.e. multiple usages of single tanks within a sequence. In addition the electroplating line may be equipped with identical tanks used as parallel resources. A mixed integer linear programming (MILP) formulation for optimizing the cycle time is developed considering in particular collisions of hoists, loops in the process sequence and parallel tanks. The developed model is tested and evaluated using a real world example indicating that the presented solution finds optimal cyclic schedules in reasonable time.

Chaku-Chaku production lines are currently widely adopted in manufacturing and assembly industry, which are an effective and efficient production organizational type thanks to its flexibility as well as customer-oriented flow layouts. However, due to the variation of customers' demand and unpredictable market factors, the layout as well as manpower allocation are both facing to be adjusted to satisfy the customers' orders, compared with reconstruction of machines or redesign of new production line, the adjusted focus is shifting to the workforce allocation and work reassignment, for the utilization of bottleneck resource machines can achieve at most 50%-60%. This work specifies the calculation of number of the operators employed to run the production line and work assignment for each operator, i.e. standardization of the production routines and the design of optimal standardized work for every operator. In order to simplify such combinatorial optimization problem, the number of manpower and the detailed work assignment are separated to be stated by mixed integer linear programming model (MILP) and constraint programming model (CP), the first model is used to optimize the workforce allocation subject to several internal constraints, the following model illustrates how to achieve the detailed scheduling, which is utilized to assign detailed work to each operator and further standardize the work sequence and content. MILP is constructed without consideration of each feasible operational sequence as well as cooperation between adjacent workers so as to simplify the assignment problem and then realize the calculation of optimal workforce. Combined with CP model as well as with the help of feedback loops, the optimal and feasible standardized work can be finally depicted in the form of Gantt chart. The performance of the approach is also verified through comparison with the stated approach in the currently available literature.

The design of logistics network is studied for manufacturing and remanufacturing system. An optimization model for remanufacturing logistics network design is proposed on the base of 0-1 mixed integer linear programming approach. According to the model, the number of various facilities, their locations and the allocation of the corresponding logistics flows can be decided upon and set up appropriate logistics network structure in order to minimize the total cost of investment and operation. This study contemplates the logistics network with the multi-product, multi-period and facilities with limited capability location-allocation problem, and also considers the logistics distribution of remanufactured products and new products which can not be replaced mutually in the forward logistics. The model is tested on an illustrative case.

We propose a hierarchical control framework for state-of-the-art baggage handling systems where the luggage is transported by fast destination coded vehicles (DCVs). In this control framework switch controllers provide position instructions for each switch in the network. A collection of switch controllers is then supervised by a network controller that mainly takes care of the route choice instructions for DCVs. The route choice control problem is problem is a nonlinear, mixed integer optimization problem, with high computational requirements, which makes it intractable in practice. Therefore, we present an alternative approach for reducing the complexity of the computations by approximating the nonlinear optimization problem and rewriting it as a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) problem for which solvers are available that allow us to efficiently compute the global optimal solution. The solution of the MILP problem is then used in computing optimal switch control actions. For a benchmark case study we compare the hierarchical control with centralized switch control. The results indicate that the proposed hierarchical control offers a balanced trade-off between optimality and computational efficiency.

We consider a cognitive radio network in which a set of base stations make opportunistic spectrum access to support wireless subscribers within their covering cells. The spectrum of interest is divided into independent channels licensed to the primary users. Channel assignment and power control must be carried out in the cognitive network so that no excessive interference is caused to the primary users in the overlaid network. We are interested in the downlink channel assignment and power control problem for a cognitive radio network, with the objective of maximizing the total throughput of all secondary users. We first develop a mathematical model and present a mixed integer linear programming formulation, which is generally NP-hard. Subsequently, to obtain a suboptimal control scheme with lower complexity, we develop a distributed optimization algorithm that iteratively increases the overall cognitive radio network throughput. Through simulation results, we compare the performance of the distributed optimization algorithm with the optimal and validate its efficacy.

The definition of industrial cluster's production load balance and the approximate formula of lg on rho based on nonlinear break-even analysis are presented for solving the problem of industrial cluster's production load imbalance. Based on the approximate formula, a cluster's profit during production load balance is compared with the cluster's profit during production load imbalance under different cluster's production load rate. The result shows that production load balance can make the cluster gain high profit when the cluster's production load is appropriate or large. Only when a cluster's production load is too small, the conclusion fails.

This paper presents an application of Ant Colony System Algorithm (ACS) to solve electrical distribution planning problems. This model constitutes an improved version of the ant system algorithm, permitting to generate food routes from their nest, and where a set of artificial ants are cooperating in order to find a good route through the data exchange contained by the pheromone deposits in several trajectories. This algorithm is applied to choose the best network plan that satisfies all demand requirements. Objective function includes fixed and variable costs associated to future investments and power losses subject to network constraints, The algorithm has been applied into a real 139-node network located in Cuenca, Ecuador.

Protected working lightpath envelope (PWLE) is a promising path-oriented protection strategy developed by us to provision survivable services for dynamic traffic. Partitioning the network capacity into a working layer and a protection layer by means of lightpath-protecting p-cycles, PWLE possesses the advantages of high capacity efficiency, avoidance of wavelength conversion, good blocking performance and guaranteed optical transmission quality. Nevertheless, the impact of network connectivity on the actual utilization of the working layer has been overlooked. Hence, we propose connectivity aware protected working lightpath envelope (CAPWLE) to augment the actual utilization of the working layer whilst retaining its high capacity efficiency. To fulfill the goal, we propose effective envelope, developed based on the maximum concurrent flow problem (MCFP), to evaluate the protection capability of lightpath-protecting p-cycles from a combined perspective of connectivity and volume. By virtue of effective envelope, CAPWLE is optimized by a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model. Numerical results show that the actual utilization of the working layer is enhanced by CAPWLE under both dynamic stationary and non-stationary traffic patterns.

The problem considered in this research is the just-in-time scheduling of a manufacturing environment that is able to produce several different products. New jobs come randomly into the system, expected to become one of the products. Each job must go through multiple stages before it can be finished as a product. There are multiple machines at each stage, and the processing time of each product on each machine is different. There exits delivery time between stages. Previous researches did much on the static scheduling of such problem by using mixed integer linear programming. However, little efforts have been made on real-time scheduling, which means the release time of jobs is unknown. But such scheduling is becoming more and more important under the increasingly competitive manufacturing market. In this paper, two distributed feedback mechanisms are proposed to solve the realtime scheduling problem of minimizing earliness and tardiness penalties of all jobs. The simulation shows that the proposed distributed feedback mechanisms deliver quite competitive performance for the targeted problem.

The status quo of enterprises' load imbalance in most clusters makes the economical function of the clusters far under the level which them should have. In order to improve the function, it is necessary to carry out working procedures, parts, components and products' order allocation in clusters. At present, there is no an effective and mature method of order allocation for enterprises in a cluster, and enterprise being overload is always because of bottleneck working procedures are overload. Therefore based on working procedures outsourcing, the author puts forward an outsourcing process model for enterprises in a cluster-collaborative order obtaining model (COOM). The model includes two sub-models. First one is outsourcing decision-making, and the second is order allocation process model. UCM is used as describing language of the model. The first sub-model is used for enterprise to decide the outsourcing types and volume of each type. The second is used for enterprise to select proper outsourcers and determine the order allocation volumes. The "information match" is used as the decision-making method for order allocation. In the end, a case is used to prove the feasibility of the model.
