Smart microgrids (SMGs) represent an innovative and adaptive approach to energy distribution, integrating advanced technologies and intelligent control systems to enhance energy efficiency and reliability. In these SMGs, energy efficiency programs (EEPs) are initiatives designed to reduce energy consumption and improve overall energy performance in various sectors. Other flexible technology which is called energy storage systems (ESSs) to modify optimal energy management (EM). EM refers to the efficient allocation and utilization of energy resources to meet demand while minimizing operation costs. So, in the context of SMGs, optimal EM plays a critical role in achieving sustainable and cost-effective energy solutions. In this paper, optimal EM coordinated with flexible facilities i.e., electrical and thermal EEPs and also ESSs has been proposed. To this end, the presented novel EEPs have been applied to the demand model in which it was used in the context of optimal EM in SMG framework. Also, as another contribution, sensitivity analysis of the energy efficiency investment rate of EEPs along with considering ESSs on the whole operation cost is accomplished to provide better discernment for stakeholders and/ or decision-makers. The proposed objective function contains multiple distributed generations’ costs i.e., fuel, operation, and maintenance costs are modeled as mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) which is solved via CPLEX solver in GAMS software. The simulation results indicate that the whole operation cost is reduced by about 9.2% and 18.2% when utilizing only thermal EEPs with ESSs and electrical EEPs with ESSs, respectively. However, implementing both types of EEPs with ESSs results in a 27.5% decrement in the total operation cost of SMG.

This paper investigates a centralized, high-resolution and fast model for home energy management. The model is provided within mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) framework while it benefits from an open-access optimization model in Python for running the model free of charge. To minimize the electricity bill, the time-of-use (TOU) electricity tariff has been selected by the consumer to manage the daily electricity consumption. This consumer-centric home energy management system (HEMS) enhances the flexibility that can be provided by the dedicated consumers during peak periods while reducing the electricity bill of the end-users benefiting from the TOU tariff. The time resolution of home appliance scheduling is 15 minutes in this study and it is compatible with the smart metering data recording for energy consumed by the end-users. The simulation results show that the electricity bill would be considerably decreased by using the proposed self-scheduling model.

Joint Aerial Layered Network (JALN) could provide crucial communication links when milsatcoms are degraded or lost. A configuration problem arising is that how we can assign the antennas to JALN High Capacity Backbone (HCB) links to maximize the link availability where each JALN aircraft has four mounting points for directional antennas? The antenna assignment problem was first formulated as a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) problem, and a greedy approach was developed [1]. The goal of this work is to develop an efficient approach based on branch-and-bound method to find an optimal solution for the antenna assignment problem. The key to the success is that the problem-specific branch strategy can significantly reduce the optimization space by removing the redundant vertices that could not appear in the optimal solutions. Also, a better formulation of the antenna assignment problem reduces the constraint space by explicitly finding all maximal cliques in the conflict graph. Thus, the proposed efficient approach constructs a sequence of subproblems that monotonically converge to an optimal solution.

In addressing the issue of exponential increase in solution time with the growing number of simulations when using mixed-integer linear programming methods to solve stochastic models based on Monte Carlo simulation, this paper proposes employing spectral clustering to determine the best-quality classification scheme. By using the spectral clustering method on random samples generated by Monte Carlo simulation, the optimal classification scheme is identified to group similar stochastic scenarios together. Finally, by selecting the center of each class as a representative, the number of scenarios to be considered is reduced, facilitating the solution of problems such as whole-scenario modeling and lowering the difficulty of solving. Experimental results demonstrate that the spectral clustering method proposed in this paper exhibits the best performance among some commonly used methods.

A fixed signal timing optimization method utilizing historical trajectory data at intersections is proposed. A model applicable to low-resolution trajectory data is developed to optimize fixed signal timing. The model takes the green split of each phase as decision variables, aiming to minimize the total trajectory delay. Based on the proportional principle of uniformly distributed randomly arriving trajectories under different signal timings, the constraints of the model are constructed from three aspects: signal constraints, trajectory signal constraints, and departure time constraints. The model solving is transformed into a mixed-integer linear programming problem. Simulation experiments using SUMO are conducted to validate the effectiveness of the proposed model.

The paper studies the capacity planning problem in the TFT-LCD production chain. Due to two significant trends, the capacity planning decision gradually becomes an important strategic issue to which TFT-LCD industry paid attention. First is the increase of product types which causes a wide range of product groups, such as mobile, monitor, notebook, TV and industrial display are produced. The second trend is the advances of new technology which cause multiple generations of technologies coexist in each manufacturing stage and production site. This paper proposes a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) to formulate the capacity planning which considers many practical characteristics and constraints in TFT-LCD production chain. A heuristic algorithm is developed to solve the MILP model.

Designing reconfigurable and adaptable assembly lines is crucial in today’s fast-paced manufacturing world. Due to the intense competition, manufacturing must keep pace with rapidly changing technology. However, this can lead to problems such as the premature end-of-life of equipment. This study explores the integration of second-hand equipment in the assembly line design problem to extend resource lifecycles and reduce costs. We propose a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model for addressing the assembly line design problem, taking into account line design, equipment management, and workforce management problems aimed at minimizing the total cost of the line. We perform a numerical study to explore the implications of second-hand equipment on the cost of an assembly line. These experiments are based on a simulation where the line is reconfigured in each generation, where a generation corresponds to a modification of the product family. The results of this work indicate a dual effect. On the one hand second-hand equipment significantly reduces the cost of the line. On the other hand, the resulting line requires frequent technician training.

Burkina Faso has significant biomass (lignocellulosic) potential that can be used for energy production. Despite this availability, there are many problems in developing viable schemes to implement optimal bioenergy production in Burkina Faso given the technologies and energy needs. This study aims to develop a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model to evaluate and optimize the main supply chain options in terms of economic criteria. The proposed model was applied to a case study in five Burkina Faso regions to produce heat, electricity, and briquettes from crop residues (cotton stalks) and agro-industrial residues (cashew nut shells and mango pits). The obtained results indicate that the optimal technologies are briquetting plants for the production of briquettes and the best biomasses are agro-industrial residues. A sensitivity analysis is therefore made considering variations in the price of biomass and products.

The UAV system is an emerging hi-tech force for emergency response and disaster relief. Electric vehicles (EV) plus unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is a novel post-disaster emergency rescue pattern. In an EV-UAV system, the EV acts as a mobile depot to support its mounted UAVs while the UAVs depart from the EV to complete various rescue tasks. And distributed energy sources, e. g., a microgrid and a battery-swapping station, can provide charging services for the EV to enlarge its endurance. A two-echelon framework is presented based on mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) to perform joint optimal scheduling considering constraints such as time windows of demand points, energy endurance and load capacities of UAVs. Case studies demonstrate the effectiveness of the model and illustrate the potentials of the proposed system.

Global climate changes have increased the frequency and consequences of disasters, which affects the stable operation of the electric power network. Thus, substation system as a significant part of electric power network, its optimal emergency operation facing disaster has attracted much attention. This paper focuses on the workforce routing and scheduling problem (WRSP) in the substation system emergency operation, which is formulated as a mixed integer linear programming problem with the objective of maximizing system resilience. Task association constraint model and technicians routing constraint model are established to describe the cooperative relationship between technicians of different crews and the complex relationship between tasks respectively. Task and feeder output correlation constraint model is established to correlate the execution of tasks in continuous time with the discrete time output of the substation feeders. In this way, the technician assignment is independent of time and the problem can be efficiently solved by optimization solver. The performance and effectiveness of the developed method is demonstrated using a practical case study. The results show that the developed model can effectively coordinate technicians and tasks, and improve the resilience of this system to disasters.
