Energy storage technologies make the green energy more available by attenuating the problem of its intermittent generation, and then reduce carbon emissions by decreasing the use of brown energies (like those from oil and natural gas). The use of batteries in data centers and Cloud infrastructures is one of the most promising applications of energy storage. In this paper, we analyze the problem of optimizing the use of green energy in geographically distributed Cloud data centers using batteries for energy storage. We propose a MILP (mixed integer linear programming) model that is able to capture the main design and management issues and to provide the optimal configuration considering service scenarios and storage capacities. The model also consider the network interconnecting the data centers and its energy consumption so as to redirect requests to different data center locations when this is convenient from the energy point of view.

In this study, we deal with a version of train platforming problem for Prague Main Station. We propose an assignment model to allocate platform tracks to trains with regard to the train timetable and operational restrictions of station. If a train departs late from the scheduled time, a delay is occurred. Delays are caused by possible conflicts. The objective of the model is to minimize the total weighted delay of trains. After solving the problem, if the objective function value is equal to zero, it means that the timetable is evaluated as robust. Total elimination of conflicts is basic presumption for quality operation in practice. To show efficiency of model implemented in GAMS, they are tested on the base of data related to the Prague main railway station. Computational results of models are presented and discussed.

With the availability of advanced MPSoC and emerging Dynamic RAM (DRAM) interface technologies, an optimal allocation of logical data buffers to physical memory cannot be handled manually anymore due to the huge design space. An allocation does not only need to decide between an onor off-chip memory, but also needs to take an increasing number of available memory channels, different bandwidth capacities and several routing possibilities into account. We formalize this problem and introduce a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model based on two different optimization criteria. We implement the MILP model into a retargetable tool and present a case study with representative data of the Long-TermEvolution (LTE) standard to show the real-life applicability of our approach.

The integrated optimization of train operation control and dynamic dispatching and the generation of integrated strategy is an important challenge to enhance the essence of emergency response capability of high-speed railway systems (HSRs) when dealing with emergencies. Considering that in actual high-speed railways, there are already preset optimized speed trajectories inside ATO. On this basis, this paper proposes a real-time train rescheduling approach that integrates preset speed trajectory selection and timetable optimization is to reduce the weighted sum of total delay time and energy consumption as much as possible, and the mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model is established and solved in CPLEX. The simulation experiment at a train delay scenario is performed and the results show that the proposed method can reduce train delay and energy consumption compared with the integrated method without considering energy consumption and other non-integrated methods.

Urban distribution network planning is a combinatorial optimization issue that requires consideration of many actual factors to make the planning more practical. It is difficult and time-consuming to artificially determine the feeder routing for a new urban area. In this paper, the tie line optimization model for urban distribution network based on the two-tie connection mode is researched. Firstly, we analysis the commonly used connection mode in current urban distribution network, and then present the planning strategy considering street layout to realize the optimization of tie lines in distribution network based on the two-tie connection mode units. Finally, we develop a mixed integer linear programming model for the optimization of tie lines which can be solved analytically. The validity and effectiveness of the proposed model are illustrated on a real 39-block district distribution system.

This work addresses the energy-efficient job shop scheduling problem and transport resources with speed scalable machines and vehicles which is a recent extension of the classical job shop problem. In the environment under consideration, the speed with which machines process production operations and the speed with which vehicles transport jobs are also to be decided. Therefore, the scheduler can control both the completion times and the total energy consumption. We propose a mixed-integer linear programming model that can be efficiently solved to optimality for small-sized problem instances.

Developing a user-side integrated energy system holds significant importance in advancing China's energy revolution. However, the complexity of such systems, consisting of numerous interconnected forms of energy, presents a daunting challenge for optimal planning. This manuscript proposes a stochastic mixed integer linear programming model to tackle this challenge and plan user-side integrated energy systems effectively. The model's objective function aims to minimize investment costs in the system's surge phase. Separate operating constraint models are established for the electrical, heat, cooling, and gas equipment involved. Commercial solving software is employed to obtain optimized solutions based on typical scenarios. The proposed model offers the best planning scenario, including equipment type and capacity, and operational strategies. The model is then applied to the planning of user-side integrated energy systems, verifying the effectiveness of the model and its solution methodology.

The temperature-controlled supply chain in Portugal is on a par with the most developed cold logistics markets. With a growing and increasingly demanding market dynamics, it is essential that companies in the sector adopt strategies aimed at increasing the efficiency of their operations, promoting an increase in the level of service and a decrease in their operating costs. The need to decrease operational costs should not have any impact on quality, and it is expected that the focus will be on the continuous improvement of internal logistics operations. A study of the outgoing movements of products from a temperature-controlled warehouse of a logistics and transport services company was developed. An integer linear programming model was built and applied, in order to minimize the costs of the logistics operator with the operation of picking and storage. It was possible to obtain savings of about 30.9% compared to the initial scenario.

The logistics network has to be optimally designed for an effective supply chain. The focus of this research is to solve network design problem occurring in packaged gases (e.g., cylinder) supply chain. The integrated logistics network design problem for packaged gases is defined as follows: given a set of potential locations for filling plants and hubs, and customers with deterministic demands, determine the configuration of the production-distribution system i.e., optimal facility locations, the filling plant production capacities, the inventory at plants and hubs, and the number of packages to be routed in primary and secondary transportation. The problem is modeled as a deterministic mixed integer program and a decomposition approach is developed which allows a natural split of the production and distribution decisions. The proposed framework is illustrated with numerical examples from real-life packaged gases supply chain. The results show that the decomposition approach is effective in solving a broad range of problem sizes. The results from the decomposition approach are benchmarked by solving optimally the whole packaged gases network design model for smaller test cases. In the end, we perform sensitivity analysis for parameters that are likely to change in the future for better understanding of their impact.

Optimizing a sustainable logistics problem in a renewable energy network using agenetic algorithm

Renewable energy sources, including bio-energy technologies, have been introduced to overcome sustainability challenges, such as negative environmental impacts and energy insecurity due to reliance on fossil fuels. Logistics activities have a significant effect on the cost and environmental impacts of renewable energy supply chains. Understanding and reducing the carbon footprint of renewable energy supply chains can aid in mitigating environmental impacts. Thus, this research presents a mathematical model that can be used to optimize renewable energy supply chain logistics costs and carbon footprint. The proposed model considers a biomass-to-bio-oil supply chain, including harvesting and collection sites, bio-refineries, and distribution centers. It is assumed that mobile and fixed refineries will be used to produce bio-oil. The model considers the mass of biomass and bio-oil, number of mobile and fixed refineries, and number of truck trips to minimize total cost, where a carbon tax is used to represent carbon footprint in the mathematical cost model. A genetic algorithm is designed to obtain a near-optimal solution. Six scenarios for mobile and fixed refinery capacity are tested in performing sensitivity analysis of the model. The results indicate that the mathematical model of the bio-oil supply chain has reasonable relationships between input and output variables. The model is able to incorporate the impact of carbon emissions in a mixed-refinery bio-oil supply chain as a cost parameter. It was also found that increasing mobile refinery capacity has the greater effect on reducing total cost and carbon emissions than increasing fixed refinery capacity.
