New secure bilateral transaction determination and study of pattern under contingencies and UPFC in competitive hybrid electricity markets

In the competitive electricity environment, the flexibility of power transactions is expected to drastically increase among the trading partners and can compromise the system security and reliability. These transactions are to be evaluated ahead of their scheduling in a day-ahead and hour-ahead market to avoid congestion and ensure their feasibility with respect to the system operating conditions. The security of the transactions has become essential in the new environment for better planning and management of competitive electricity markets. This paper proposes a new method of secure bilateral transaction determination using AC distribution factors based on the full Jacobian sensitivity and considering the impact of slack bus for pool and bilateral coordinated markets. The secure bilateral transactions have also been determined considering critical line outage contingencies cases. The bilateral transaction matrix pattern has also been determined in the presence of unified power flow controller (UPFC). The optimal location of UPFC has been determined using mixed integer non-linear programming approach. The proposed technique has been applied on IEEE 24-bus reliability test system (RTS). Multiple allocation hub-and-spoke network design under hub congestion

The multiple allocation hub-and-spoke network design under hub congestion problem is addressed in this paper. A non-linear mixed integer programming formulation is proposed, modeling the congestion as a convex cost function. A generalized Benders decomposition algorithm has been deployed and has successfully solved standard data set instances up to 81 nodes. The proposed algorithm has also outperformed a commercial leading edge non-linear integer programming package. The main contribution of this work is to establish a compromise between the transportation cost savings induced by the economies of scale exploitation and the costs associated with the congestion effects. A simulated annealing approach to the solution of MINLP problems

An algorithm (M-SIMPSA) suitable for the optimization of mixed integer non-linear programming (MINLP) problems is presented. A recently proposed continuous non-linear solver (SIMPSA) is used to update the continuous parameters, and the Metropolis algorithm is used to update the complete solution vector of decision variables. The M-SIMPSA algorithm, which does not require feasible initial points or any problem decomposition, was tested with several functions published in the literature, and results were compared with those obtained with a robust adaptive random search method. For ill-conditioned problems, the proposed approach is shown to be more reliable and more efficient as regards the overcoming of difficulties associated with local optima and in the ability to reach feasibility. The results obtained reveal its adequacy for the optimization of MINLP problems encountered in chemical engineering practice. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.

Formulation and motion planning of the peg-in-hole task with mixed logical dynamical system theory

It is well known that most assembly skills can be regarded as one of the signal-symbol hybrid dynamical systems, since. the interactive dynamics between the end-effector and the environment change according to contact configurations (geometrical constraints). In this paper, we first propose a model of the peg-in-hole task, which is known as a typical assembly task. mixed logical dynamical system theory is adopted to formulate the peg-in-hole task, and an optimal solution with both continuous and logical variables under an objective function is found systematically. Then, a OF strategy to find the optimal solution with less computation is proposed. Finally, some planning results for the peg-in-hole task are shown in order to verify the usefulness of the proposed method.

Multistage distribution network expansion planning considering the emerging energy storage systems

This paper addresses multistage distribution network expansion planning (DNEP) incorporating energy storage systems (ESSs). The ESSs are utilized to shave the peak demand and to reduce the planning cost. Annual and daily load duration curves are considered to evaluate the impacts of the ESSs on the planning. The proposed planning is carried out based on the AC power flow including active power, reactive power, and network loss. The problem is formulated as a constrained, mixed-integer, and nonlinear programming (MINLP) and solved by using particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. A 11 kV and 30-bus radial distribution network is considered as case study and the typical ESSs are also regarded to install on the network. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness and viability of the proposed method to consider the ESSs in DNEP. The results indicate that integrating the ESSs in DNEP reduces the planning cost significantly, as well improves the technical parameters of the network such as bus voltages and line loading. Strategic supply and transportation planning of a supply chain for agricultural biomass to hydrogen and syngas

Strategic supply and transportation planning of agricultural biomass to hydrogen and syngas supply chain with inter-fuel and inter-biomass substitution was studied in this paper. The sourcing and transportation decision was modeled, according to bi-level optimization, where suppliers competed on supply capacity by maximizing their profits at minimum transportation and holding cost. Considering supply chain superstructure, dual biomass suppliers were modeled to supply a biofuel producer who produced two different types of biofuels. The supply planning was combined with transportation planning to minimize total supply chain costs. The results showed that the model was capable of finding optimum purchase and selling prices and production capacity, by maximizing inter-fuel and inter-biomass substitutability. Another key finding was that the proposed model was capable of finding optimum order allocation to both biomass suppliers in such a way that there was an equal profit distribution between suppliers and biofuel producers.

Designing Cost-Effective Biopharmaceutical Facilities Using mixed-integer Optimization

Chromatography operations are identified as critical steps in a monoclonal antibody (mAb) purification process and can represent a significant proportion of the purification material costs. This becomes even more critical with increasing product titers that result in higher mass loads onto chromatography columns, potentially causing capacity bottlenecks. In this work, a mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) model was created and applied to an industrially relevant case study to optimize the design of a facility by determining the most cost-effective chromatography equipment sizing strategies for the production of mAbs. Furthermore, the model was extended to evaluate the ability of a fixed facility to cope with higher product titers up to 15 g/L. Examination of the characteristics of the optimal chromatography sizing strategies across different titer values enabled the identification of the maximum titer that the facility could handle using a sequence of single column chromatography steps as well as multi-column steps. The critical titer levels for different ratios of upstream to dowstream trains where multiple parallel columns per step resulted in the removal of facility bottlenecks were identified. Different facility configurations in terms of number of upstream trains were considered and the trade-off between their cost and ability to handle higher titers was analyzed. The case study insights demonstrate that the proposed modeling approach, combining MINLP models with visualization tools, is a valuable decision-support tool for the design of cost-effective facility configurations and to aid facility fit decisions. A multi-period inventory transportation model for tactical planning of food grain supply chain

The food grain supply chain problem of the Public Distribution System (PDS) of India is addressed in this paper to satisfy the demand of the deficit Indian states. The problem involves the transportation of bulk food grain by capacitated vehicles from surplus states to deficit states through silo storage. A mixed integer non-linear programming (MINLP) model is formulated which seeks to minimize the overall cost including bulk food grain shipment, storage, and operational cost. The model incorporates the novel vehicle preference constraints along with the seasonal procurement, silo storage, vehicle capacity and demand satisfaction restrictions. The management of Indian food grain supply chain network is more intricate and difficult issue due to many uncertain interventions and its chaotic nature. To tackle the aforementioned problem an effective meta-heuristic which based on the strategy of sorting elite ants and pheromone trail updating called Improved Max-Min Ant System (IMMAS) is proposed. The solutions obtained through IMMAS is validated by implementing the Max-Min Ant System (MMAS). A sensitivity analysis has been performed to visualize the effect of model parameters on the solution quality. Finally, the statistical analysis is carried out for confirming the superiority of the proposed algorithm over the other. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This paper proposes a new method of optimal number and location of TCSC using mixed integer non-linear programming approach in the deregulated electricity markets. Optimal number and location of TCSC controller can effectively enhance system loadability and their placement is a crucial issue due to their high cost. Since, in the competitive electricity environment more and more transactions are negotiated, which can compromise the system security. Therefore, it has become essential to determine secure transactions occurring in the new environment for better planning and management. The system loadability has been determined in a hybrid market model utilizing the secure transaction matrix. The proposed technique has been tested on IEEE 24-bus reliability test system (RTS).

The sustainability of water resources is one of the major concerns of the world. Industries are finding ways to minimize water costs and to reduce water pollution through efficient use of supplies. One of effective solutions is the use of water pinch technology or process integration techniques. Property integration emerged as the third trend of process integration technique ( aside from energy and mass integration) to solve the problem of water network synthesis by considering physical stream properties such as pH or resistivity. Various techniques have been done to solve this property-based problem. In this paper, mixed integer non-linear programming (MINLP) problems with topological constraints is studied. Nowadays, various evolutionary algorithms are also used to solve such MINLP problems. In this study, particle swarm optimization is used to solve the property integration problem. A comparison is made between this algorithm and commercial genetic algorithm (GA) applications. Particle swarm optimization is observed to perform favorably compared to GA.
