A feasibility study for the locations of waste transfer stations in urban centers: a case study on the city of Nashik, India

Rapid population growth and high rate of urbanization make municipal solid waste management a challenging task for municipalities due to the inadequacy of infrastructural services. Taking this into consideration, this paper proposes an approach for finding economically optimal locations and feasibility demonstration of a municipal solid waste management infrastructure unit, i.e. waste transfer stations. This analytical approach consists of two basic elements: (i) a mathematical model to optimize overall cost for municipal solid waste management;and (ii) geographical information system tools to create a data inventory for the mathematical model. The novelty of the proposed model includes heterogeneity in data compilation, on-road measurements of distances and strategic allocation of transfer stations. Also, to assess waste load estimation more precisely, analyzing the impacts of heterogeneity in data and on road distances on model, three distinct cases have been considered. Further, the developed approach has been demonstrated on the city of Nashik, India. The mathematical model for Nashik city is written in a mathematical programming language AMPL and the solutions have been obtained using KNITRO solver. Optimization model selects three best locations out of eight potential locations with the optimum capacity of 200 TPD. Furthermore, the assessment of model's behavior under uncertainty has been performed with a comprehensive sensitivity analysis for further improvements. The integrity of all components in this study produces a generic framework for helping municipal officials and researchers for development of a municipal solid waste management system with transfer stations in an economically optimal manner. In this paper, a two-stage procedure is proposed in order to solve the centralized self-healing scheme for electrical distribution systems. The considered self-healing actions are the reconfiguration of the distribution grid and, if needed, node and zone load-shedding. Thus, the proposed procedure determines the status of the switching devices in order to effectively isolate a faulty zone and minimize the number of de-energized nodes and zones, while ensuring that the operative and electrical constraints of the system are not violated. The proposed method is comprised of two stages. The first stage solves a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) problem in order to obtain the binary decision variables for the self-healing scheme (i.e., the switching device status and energized zones). In the second stage, a nonlinear programming (NLP) problem is solved in order to adjust the steady-state operating point of the topology found in the first stage (i.e., correction of the continuous electrical variables and load-shedding optimization). Commercial optimization solvers are used in the first stage to solve the MILP problem and in the second stage to solve the NLP problem. A 44-node test system and a real Brazilian distribution system with 964-nodes were used to test and verify the proposed methodology.

Iterative Energy-Efficient Stable Matching Approach for Context-Aware Resource Allocation in D2D Communications

Energy efficiency (EE) is critical to fully achieve the huge potentials of device-to-device (D2D) communications with limited battery capacity. In this paper, we consider the two-stage EE optimization problem, which consists of a joint spectrum and power allocation problem in the first stage, and a context aware D2D peer selection problem in the second stage. We provide a general tractable framework for solving the combinatorial problem, which is NP-hard due to the binary and continuous optimization variables. In each stage, user equipments (UEs) from two finite and disjoint sets are matched in a two-sided stable way based on the mutual preferences. First, the preferences of UEs are defined as the maximum achievable EE. An iterative power allocation algorithm is proposed to optimize EE under a specific match, which is developed by exploiting nonlinear fractional programming and Lagrange dual decomposition. Second, we propose an iterative matching algorithm, which first produces a stable match based on the fixed preferences, and then dynamically updates the preferences according to the latest matching results in each iteration. Finally, the properties of the proposed algorithm, including stability, optimality, complexity, and scalability, are analyzed in detail. Numerical results validate the efficiency and superiority of the proposed algorithm under various simulation scenarios.

In this paper, a mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) approach for determining optimal location and number of PV-based distributed generators in pool based electricity market is presented. For obtaining the PV output power, solar modeling has been carried out for a given data. The solar PV has been integrated into the system finding its optimal location and numbers based on the transmission loss minimization. The analysis has been carried out for IEEE 24 bus test system in pool electricity market model. The realistic load model as ZIP load has been considered and the results are compared for constant P, Q load model and ZIP and model. The non-linear mixed integer programming problem has been solved using MATLAB and GAMS interfacing.

Supply chain network design is one of the most important problems that managers deal with in supply chain management (SCM). This paper presents a mathematical model for closed-loop supply chain network design. By solving the mathematical model facility locations, the flow of material and number of vehicles are determined such that the total supply chain costs are minimized. Due to complexity of the mathematical model of closed-loop supply chain, a novel Meta-heuristic algorithm named Water Cycle Algorithm is developed to solve the mathematical model of the problem. Various test problems are solved to evaluate the efficiency of the Water Cycle Algorithm.

In this paper, we consider the optimal joint resource allocation problem of subcarrier and power for non-real time wireless networks that use visible light communication (VLC) technology. VLC has been recognized as a promising technology as it allows to transmit data in considerably higher orders of magnitude compared to traditional radio frequency (RF) methods [3]. Therefore, it is expected that most of the current existing protocols for resource allocation using traditional RF technologies will adapt to VLC technology in the near future. We model the resource allocation problem by means of a mixed integer nonlinear optimization problem that we further linearize using a piecewise linear approximation method. The latter allows to compute optimal and near optimal solutions for the problem. Optimal solutions can be obtained as long as the number of line segments is sufficiently large. Subsequently, we propose a variable neighborhood search based decomposition procedure that allows to compute, in average, tight near optimal solutions in less than one second compared to the high CPU time required by the piecewise linear model.

We study valid inequalities for a set relevant for optimization models that have both binary indicator variables, which indicate positivity of associated continuous variables, and separable concave constraints. Such models reduce to a mixed-integer linear program (MILP) when the concave constraints are ignored, and to a nonconvex global optimization problem when the binary restrictions are ignored. In algorithms to solve such problems to global optimality, relaxations are traditionally obtained by using valid inequalities for the MILP ignoring the concave constraints, and by independently relaxing each concave constraint using the secant obtained from the bounds of the associated variable. We propose a technique to obtain valid inequalities that are based on both the MILP and the concave constraints. We begin by analyzing a low-dimensional set that contains a single binary indicator variable, a single concave constraint, and three continuous variables. Using this analysis, for the canonical Single Node Flow Set (SNFS), we demonstrate how to "tilt" a given valid inequality for the SNFS to obtain additional valid inequalities that account for separable concave functions of the arc flows. We present computational results demonstrating the utility of the new inequalities on a fixed plus concave cost transportation problem. To our knowledge, this is one of the first works that simultaneously convexifies both nonconvex functions and binary variables to strengthen the relaxations of practical mixed integer nonlinear programs.

Capacitors and taps of MV distribution systems are usually discrete optimization objects, a control sequence is needed to respond to the randomness of renewable distributed generations (DG), and many existing algorithms are trapped into the dimension house. A control strategy is proposed to minimize network losses, switching costs, generation wastes of DGs and voltage deviation, a weighted sum method is used to reflect the preferences on the mutually conflicting control objectives. For the mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) problems of capacitors and taps control, a cooperative particle swarm optimization (Co-PSO) method employing cooperative behavior to significantly improve the optimizing ability is used. Finally, the correctness, convergence and robustness of the proposed algorithm are verified by comparison against existing popular schemes through detailed simulations over 24h on the IEEE 13-bus unbalanced distribution system.

An integrated framework for scheduling and control using fast model predictive control

Integration of scheduling and control involves extensive information exchange and simultaneous decision making in industrial practice (Engell and Harjunkoski, Comput Chem Eng. 2012;47:121-133;Baldea and Harjunkoski I, Comput Chem Eng. 2014;71:377-390). Modeling the integration of scheduling and dynamic optimization (DO) at control level using mathematical programming results in a mixed integer Dynamic Optimization which is computationally expensive (Flores-Tlacuahuac and Grossmann, Ind Eng Chem Res. 2006;45(20):6698-6712). In this study, we propose a framework for the integration of scheduling and control to reduce the model complexity and computation time. We identify a piece-wise affine model from the first principle model and integrate it with the scheduling level leading to a new integration. At the control level, we use fast Model Predictive Control (fast MPC) to track a dynamic reference. Fast MPC also overcomes the increasing dimensionality of multiparametric MPC in our previous study (Zhuge and Ierapetritou, AIChE J. 2014;60(9):3169-3183). Results of CSTR case studies prove that the proposed approach reduces the computing time by at least two orders of magnitude compared to the integrated solution using mp-MPC. Synthesis of reverse osmosis desalination network under boron specifications

Recent regulations regarding water quality motivated research in reverse osmosis (RO) technology for water desalination especially under boron restrictions. Boron control in the permeate products by reverse osmosis technology comprises several mitigation options which impose capital and operation costs. In our study, we investigate the design of RO system under the design concept of split partial second pass reverse osmosis (SPSPRO) in order to allow extraction of permeate streams along the RO pressure vessels. The design approach is based on superstructure optimization which allows the identification of optimal process layout and optimal operation conditions of the process units. pH adjustment of the network streams is also included in the model to control boron species distribution during the separation process. A mixed integer nonlinear program (MINLP) model is subsequently formulated based on the superstructure representation. The mathematical programming formulation is demonstrated on a case study to show the application of the mathematical programming model. The results show lower treatment cost through the proposed mathematical programming model. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
