Network flow optimisation has many real-world applications. The minimum cost flow problem (MCFP) is one of the most common network flow problems. Mathematical programming methods often assume the linearity and convexity of the underlying cost function, which is not realistic in many real-world situations. Solving large-sized MCFPs with nonlinear non-convex cost functions poses a much harder problem. In this paper, we propose a new representation scheme for solving non-convex MCFPs using genetic algorithms (GAs). The most common representation scheme for solving the MCFP in the literature using a GA is priority-based encoding, but it has some serious limitations including restricting the search space to a small part of the feasible set. We introduce a probabilistic tree-based representation scheme (PTbR) that is far superior compared to the priority-based encoding. Our extensive experimental investigations show the advantage of our encoding compared to previous methods for a variety of cost functions.

The voltage in distributed power system (DPS) with runoff small hydro power (RSHP) may break the upper or lower limit due to the uncertainty of power generation of RSHP. Reactive power compensation can mitigate the voltage violation problem. In this paper, the method of determining optimal reactive power compensation configuration in DPS with RSHP is studied. A mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) model is proposed considering the impact of different operation conditions and transformer tap. In addition, a solving algorithm based on the particle swarm optimization (PSO) is adopted to obtain the optimal capacity. Furthermore, two cases derived from the IEEE 33 system are investigated to verify the proposed model and algorithm, and sensitivity of key parameter is analyzed finally.

A femtocell is a small cellular base station (BS), typically used for serving approved users within a small coverage. In this paper, we investigate the problem of data multicast in femtocell networks that incorporates superposition coding (SC) and successive interference cancellation (SIC). The problem is to decide the transmission schedule for each BS, as well as the power allocation for the SC layers, to achieve a sufficiently large SNR for each layer to be decodable with SIC. The objective is to minimize the total BS power consumption. We formulate a mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) problem, which is NP-hard in general. We then reformulate the problem into a simpler form, and derive upper and lower performance bounds. Finally, we consider three typical connection scenarios in the femtocell network, and develop optimal and near-optimal algorithms for the three scenarios. The proposed algorithms have low computational complexity, and outperform a heuristic scheme with considerable gains in our simulation study.

The paper deals with the approximately time optimal control of automatically driven cars modeled with gear shift as discrete control input beside the continuous ones in a path between two path boundaries. The path boundaries are defined by their corner points that may he the result of image processing in real time or prescribed in advance. The path is divided into sections for which separate optimum control problems are solved in a nonlinear moving horizon predictive control (NMHPC) fashion increasing the semi-online character of the approach. In each section the problem can be formulated as a mixed integer optimal control problem (MIOCP). The resulting MIOCP is solved by reformulating it to static mixed-integer nonlinear program (MINLP) using time discretization and direct multiple shooting method. Non-commercial open software packages are applied that substantially use the gradients of the objective function and the Jacobians of the constraints exploiting sparsity. The elaborated method can be applied both for combustion engine and electric driven cars. It can also form the basis to generate an offline database of a central general collision avoidance system (CAS) for varying path parameters on a grid which can further support real time applications.

Optimal transmission switching (OTS) is a new practice in power systems and can improve the economics of electric power systems integrated with renewable resources such as wind. In OTS modeling binary decision variables are added to the optimal power flow (OPF) problem to represent on and off switching status of lines. This extension to alternative current optimal power flow (ACOPF) problem results in a mixed integer nonlinear program (MINLP) which is not guaranteed to be solved optimally by existing solution methods and also requires excessive computation times for large real systems. In this paper we develop a genetic algorithm (GA) for ACOPF based OTS problem. In our GA approach we benefit from the structure of power transmission network and develop a line scoring method and a graphical distance based local improvement technique to better search the solution space. We compare our proposed genetic algorithm with two greedy heuristics on test power systems with renewable resources of energy. The results show that our proposed approach finds more economic solutions especially in larger power systems.

This study investigates the logistics network planning in a major Brazilian petrochemical company, taking into consideration the impact of tax-related costs, in addition to transportation and inventory costs. A mixed integer nonlinear programming model that considers the most relevant costs involved in the network planning process in Brazil was developed and subsequently applied to a case study of a large Brazilian petrochemical company. Our results support anecdotal reports regarding Brazilian companies intensely using ‘product tourism’ to take advantage of different interstate tax rates. Product tourism occurs when a logistically unnecessary flow of goods is established to a lower tax jurisdiction (with a corresponding increase in transportation costs) so that the company obtains a reduction in the amount of the taxes due. The paper deals with the time optimal control of automatically driven cars modeled with gear shift as discrete control input beside the continuous ones in a test path between corridors. The car is required to avoid a static obstacle or performing double lane change. The problem can be formulated as a mixed-integer optimal control problem (MIOCP). The resulting MIOCP is solved by reformulating it to static mixed-integer nonlinear program (MINLP) using time discretization and direct multiple shooting method. Non-commercial open software packages are applied that substantially use the gradients of the objective function and the Jacobians of the constraints exploiting sparsity. A novel algorithm and implementation is presented for computing the derivatives of the complex state trajectory joining equations. This algorithm was given in the form of matrix differential equations whose structure allowed to compute their solution using RK4 in matrix form. The elaborated method can be applied both for combustion engine and electric driven cars. It can form the basis to generate an offline database of a central general collision avoidance system (CAS) for varying path parameters on a grid which can support real time applications.

In this paper, we survey mathematical programming methods for the management of pressure in water distribution systems through optimal placement and operation of control valves. The optimization framework addresses the minimization of average zone pressure under multiple demand scenarios, enforcing hydraulic equations as nonlinear constraints. Binary variables are used to model the placement of valves. The derived nonlinear optimization problem is a non-convex MINLP. We implement and evaluate a direct MINLP solver and two different reformulation methods for MINLPs that solve sequences of regular NLPs. The energy management in the residential sector, as a basic unit of energy consumption, has received extensive attention in recent years. To address this issue, a residential energy management system (REMS) is proposed, with two objectives considered, i.e., minimizing the costs and maximizing comfort-awareness of end-users. In the framework of the REMS, the economic role of a power-to-gas based storage system (P2GSS) is examined under different operating scenarios. The problem is first formulated as a mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) model and then solved by an iterative decomposition method. In the proposed method, each objective is regarded as an independent sub-problem and refined iteratively, until the deviation comes into an acceptable range. Simulation results of a sample system demonstrate the positive role of the P2GSS in scheduling REMS economically and the effectiveness of the proposed method.
