The case study is a newly opened fruit juice concentrated factory. Three different products have been launched to serve both domestic and international markets. For its inbound logistics, it receives fresh fruits from local growers. As the fresh fruits are seasonal, its prices and quantities are higly fluctuated. A cold storage is then used to freeze and store the fruits during their peak periods in order to reduce risks of fruit shortages and high prices in off peak periods. Storaging costs of fresh fruits are, however, substantial. To produce the finished products, Clean-in-Place (CIP) is being managed before changing the product lines and it takes 3 days for each cleaning or setup. After the production process, the finished products are stocked in its warehouse no more than 2 months as its clients require the products to be 80% viable of its shelf life. Aggregate planning is then needed to match demand with supply of the case study while minimising total operating costs including purchasing cost, raw material inventory cost, semi-product cost, finished inventory cost, setup cost and labour cost. mixed integer programing is used to find the optimal decision variables that are purchasing volumes, semi-product volumes, production volumes, and setup decisions.

The main issue in the present article is to investigate how to solve a mixed integer fractional signomial geometric programing problem (MIFSGP). In the first step to achieving this idea, we must convert a fractional signomial programing problem into a non-fractional problem via a simple conversion technique. Then, a convex relaxation with a new modified piecewise linear approximation with integer break points as a pre-solve method is used to reach an integer global optimum solution. A few numerical examples are included to illustrate the advantages of the proposed method

Locational Analysis of In-motion Wireless Power Transfer System for Long-distance Trips by Electric Vehicles: Optimal Locations and Economic Rationality in Japanese Expressway Network

The popularization of electric vehicles (EVs) is limited by their driving range and long charging times. To address this, in-motion wireless power transfer systems (WPTSs) are currently attracting attention as a new power supply system. In-motion WPTSs have coils embedded under the road to transfer power from the WPTSs to EVs while driving. However, the main drawback of WPTSs is their large investment, especially in supporting the long-distance trips of EVs on expressways. Therefore, this study proposes a new mixed-integer programming model (MIP) to determine the optimal location of WPTSs for maximized total feasible flow demand. By focusing on long-distance trips on expressways, we propose the first flow-capturing model for WPTS locations that can (i) solve for the distance of WPTS installed as continuous variables, and (ii) solve problems based on real-scale data using a general MIP solver. Our method is extended to a discussion of WPTS installations on expressways in Japan. We observe that WPTS has strong potential as an EV power supply system in terms of coverage and economic rationality. In particular, WPTS has economic rationality not only in busy networks but also in sparsely populated networks that connect urban and rural areas. Thus, this study clarifies the important insights of WPTSs in improving their effectivity to narrow down the demand and ensure the flexibility in the locations of WPTS.

Environmental challenge of vehicle dispatching in marine container drayage

In marine container drayage (CD), which refers to the transport of goods over a short distance, empty containers (ECs) are required to be transported long distances between a terminal and a shipper/consignee by conventional transportation. This causes truck traffic congestion in harbor districts that increases CO2 emissions (CO2EM). This study addresses the vehicle dispatch problem with respect to the environmental impact of marine CD, considering the tractor dwell time is long at the customer site due to cumbersome container loading/unloading (L/U). We model this problem as an extended version of the vehicle routing problem with precedence constraints to minimize the total CO2 weighted travel distance. To improve CD operation in long L/U time, we propose a new practice for CD operations. Additionally, we develop a mixed integer programing model (MIP) for the new practice representation, and propose a Simulated Annealing (SA) based heuristic approach to solving the new practice instance. By implementing our proposed new operation, in a long L/U time, the CO2EM, EC move and number of tractors required can also be reduced by allowing uncoupled tractor move.

The combined cooling, heating and power (CCHP) microgrid can realize complementary advantages and unified coordinated work between multiple energy sources, and is a novel and efficient energy supply method, which can achieve multienergy complementary. In order to analyze the economic and energy-saving effects of heat pumps and energy storage devices, under the conditions of time-of-use electricity prices and micro-grid operation, a system including wind turbine, photovoltaic cell, fuel cell, CCHP system, ground source heat pump and energy storage device is established with the objective function of the minimum total operating cost in the dispatch period. The objective function of the proposed method is solved by the mixed integer programming method. The simulation result indicates that heat pumps and energy storage devices can change the coupling relationship between cooling, heating and electricity in the system, increase flexible system adjustment capacity and bring big economic benefits.

Evaluating and expanding the European Union's protected-area network toward potential post-2020 coverage targets

The Convention on Biological Diversity's (CBD) strategic plan will expire in 2020, but biodiversity loss is ongoing. Scientists call for more ambitious targets in the next agreement. The nature-needs-half movement, for example, has advocated conserving half of Earth to solve the biodiversity crisis, which has been translated to protecting 50% of each ecoregion. We evaluated current protection levels of ecoregions in the territory of one of the CBD's signatories, the European Union (EU). We also explored the possible enlargement of the Natura 2000 network to implement 30% or 50% ecoregion coverage in the EU member states' protected area (PA) network. Based on the most recent land-use data, we examined whether ecoregions have enough natural area left to reach such high coverage targets. We used a spatially explicit mixed integer programing model to estimate the least-cost expansion of the PA network based on 3 scenarios that put different emphasis on total conservation cost, ecological representation of ecosystems, or emphasize an equal share of the burden among member states. To realize 30% and 50% ecoregion coverage, the EU would need to add 6.6% and 24.2%, respectively, of its terrestrial area to its PA network. For all 3 scenarios, the EU would need to designate most recommended new PAs in seminatural forests and other semi- or natural ecosystems. Because 15 ecoregions did not have enough natural area left to implement the ecoregion-coverage targets, some member states would also need to establish new PAs on productive land, allocating the largest share to arable land. Thirty percent ecoregion coverage was met by protecting remaining natural areas in all ecoregions except 3, where productive land would also need to be included. Our results support discussions of higher ecoregions protection targets for post-2020 biodiversity frameworks.

Partitioning Vertical Evacuation Areas in Umeda Underground Mall to Minimize the Evacuation Completion Time

When an underground mall is flooded, the shoppers should be evacuated to a building connected to the mall. However, the number of evacuees from a large-scale underground mall will exceed the capacity of the evacuation center. Furthermore, the evacuation time may be delayed. This paper proposes a mathematical programming problem that minimizes the evacuation completion time on a general planar graph of a partitioned evacuation area with a specified sink capacity. We also propose a workflow for translating the general geometric spatial data to graphical data. The problem is applied to the real spatial data and evacuation setting of Umeda underground mall in Osaka, Japan. The problem's performance is compared with that of the conventional problem that minimizes the total evacuation distance, and its accuracy is confirmed in a multi-agent simulation. The validity of the proposed method is also discussed.

Design of a reliable multi-modal multi-commodity model for hazardous materials transportation under uncertainty

In this paper, we propose a new mathematical model for designing a reliable hazardous material (HAZMAT) transportation network (RHTND) on the basis of hub location topology under uncertainties, in which hub nodes may be disrupted by external events, as well as HAZMATs incidents. Hub locations and HAZMAT transportation routes using different transportation modes are simultaneously optimized to obtain minimum risk of incidents. A mixed integer nonlinear programing model is developed. To cope with the uncertainties in the model, we provide a solution framework based on an integration of the well-known chance-constrained programing with a possibilistic programing approach. Small size problems are solved to optimality. In order to solve large size instances, a meta-heuristic algorithm was applied and its performance is evaluated in comparison with a new lower bound approach through analysis of a real case-study of a HAZMAT transportation network. Evacuation is a time critical process in which the highest priority is to get those people who may be affected by a disaster out of the danger zone as fast as possible. For disaster-prone areas, authorities often distribute evacuation plans well in advance, or encourage the population to prepare themselves for eventual disasters. This paper presents an approach to such planning ahead for evacuation that tightly couples optimization and traffic simulation in order to determine optimal evacuation time and exit from the area for each evacuee. In this paper, we discuss the approach's properties and illustrate its performance using two case studies of wildfire-prone areas in the state of Victoria, Australia. The results show that our approach can lead to significant improvements when compared to ad-hoc evacuation, but these improvements also strongly depend on population density and road network topology. More generally, our research highlights the significant benefits of tightly coupling optimization and simulation for evacuation modeling. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
