This paper presents a multi-period unit commitment active and reactive power optimal management for microgrids under different market policies. The overall optimization problem is formulated by mixed integer quadratic programming by taking into considerations the environmental costs and the battery degradation cost against a comprehensive set of constraints. A typical low-voltage microgrid, which comprises of distributed generators, renewable energy resources, storage battery, and varieties of loads, are employed to implement and examine the proposed approach. The microgrid is comprehensively investigated with both grid-connected and isolated modes under minimum operation and emission cost and maximum overall profit policies. The results have revealed that the charging and discharging operations of storage battery typically reduce the total operation and emission costs and hence maximize overall profit, even considering the battery degradation.

This paper proposes an ecological adaptive cruise control (EACC) concept with the primary goal to minimize the fuel consumption in a city bus with an internal combustion engine (ICE). A hybrid model predictive control (HMPC) is implemented in this work to control both continuous and discrete-time variables. Moreover, a multi-objective optimization problem for EACC is formulated in time-domain as a mixed-integer quadratically constrained quadratic programming (MIQCQP) problem. The proposed HMPC-EACC performs robust vehicle-following while tracking a leading vehicle and plans fuel-efficient acceleration and deceleration maneuvers for the host vehicle. Additionally, it uses the signal phase and timing (SPaT) information to compute a green wave reference speed for the host vehicle to cross the signalized intersections at a green phase. Moreover, the proposed controller performs pulse and glide (PnG) to optimally control the engine ON and OFF states and save additional fuel. Furthermore, the performance of the proposed strategy is evaluated on a real-world driving profile and compared against a baseline controller from the literature. Finally, the influence of different prediction horizons on the fuel savings and computation times are studied. The results reveal significant reduction in fuel consumption with HMPC-EACC and demonstrate that the proposed controller is real-time capable.

This paper presents a traffic signal scheduling strategy with consideration of both pedestrians and vehicles in the urban traffic system. Firstly, a novel mathematical model consisting of several logic constraints is proposed to describe the pedestrian flow in the urban traffic network and its dynamics are developed based on the crossing rules. Secondly, a mathematical model about the vehicle traffic network is introduced. Thirdly, a traffic light scheduling strategy to minimize the trade-off of the delays between pedestrians and vehicles is proposed. Finally, we translate this traffic signal scheduling problem to a mixed integer quadratic programming (MIQP) problem which can be solved by several existing tools, e.g., GUROBI. Numerical simulation results are provided to illustrate the effectiveness of our real-time traffic light scheduling for pedestrian movement and the potential impact to the vehicle traffic flows by the pedestrian movement.

Deferrable loads can actively participate in the power system operation as a schedulable resource. The loads are modulated by shifting their demand characteristics along the time horizon, i.e., orchestrating the starting instants. Through flattening peaks and valleys of the demand curve, generating units are released from the burden of frequent output adjustments and a higher operating efficiency can be achieved. An optimal day-ahead dispatch strategy is proposed for deferrable loads. The next-day demand characteristics of the deferrable loads can be derived using historical data or behavior analysis. The starting instants of the loads are to be delicately delayed or advanced within the 24-h period. By such modulation, the aggregation of the controlled loads aims to closely track the dispatch objective that is assigned by the control center. An optimal model is constructed to describe the dispatch problem, which can be converted into a mixed integer quadratic programming (MIQP) one. The coefficients of the MIQP problem are computed using MATLAB. The solver SBB of GAMS is applied to solving the MIQP problem. Simulations are conducted to verify the effectiveness of the proposed optimal dispatch strategy. The aggregation of the controlled loads can closely track the dispatch objective.

Accurate identification of patient breathing efforts is imperative to the delivery of lung and diaphragm protective ventilation. Existing model-based approaches constrain the allowable shape of the patient effort pressure-time profile to improve model identifiability. A novel method coined the B-MIQP technique is presented that extends upon existing methods with aims to further improve identification accuracy. B-spline basis functions and binary decision variables are utilised within a single compartment framework to describe the patient effort pressure-time profile. With reference to the experimental results, identified elastance and resistance values were within expected ranges, while identified patient effort outcomes matched physiological expectations and reflected trends when compared to esophageal pressure signals. This paper presents an energy management system to minimize the total combined operational and emission costs of a hybrid microgrid by optimal scheduling of the operating time of distributed generators and power exchange between the battery storage system and the utility grid. The impacts of unit commitment on the optimal operation of the hybrid microgrid are evaluated by formulating and solving the optimization problem using mixed integer quadratic programming technique. Both grid-connected and isolated modes on the hybrid microgrid, which comprises of a combination of distributed generators, renewable energy resources, storage batteries, and a variety of loads, are investigated. Realistic constraints and battery degradation are also factored into the optimization. The results show comprehensively that incorporation of the unit commitment into the optimization problem typically reduces the total operational and emission costs for both isolated and grid-connected modes. In addition, it helps to increase the penetration of renewable energy resources with microgrid.

This paper presents a transmission expansion formulation that maximizes the profits of the generators in a decentralized market structure. Transmission expansion of congested lines increases the dispatch by the generators and hence the generator surplus. The generators profit is the difference in surplus and the transmission congestion charges. Previous work on profit maximization was a simple quadratic formulation as the transmission charges were taken as fixed investment costs. In this paper, transmission congestion charges are based on the difference in spot market locational marginal prices. To ensure that transmission merchants always profits from expansion, the transmission congestion charges are modeled as several blocks of congestion prices and transmission capacities. The profitable transmission expansion for generators is thus formulated as a mixed integer (0-1) quadratic programming problem. Examples are provided to explain the method.

This manuscript presents a novel direct current model predictive control with long prediction horizon for medium-voltage polyphase permanent magnet synchronous motor drives. By utilizing the proposed technique, we can reduce the armature current harmonics and torque ripples, minimize the electrical and mechanical losses, improve the torque and speed rendering quality, and achieve a highly reliable permanent magnet motor drive. The state-space model of a representative polyphase permanent magnet synchronous motor is derived with the armature current and flux linkage jointly chosen as the state-space variables. Leveraging completing the squares, the mixed-integer-quadratic-programming (MIQP) problem can be formulated and efficiently solved, which provides the optimal switching sequence for the IGBT inverter. The proposed control algorithm is also implemented and examined with computer simulation to show the robustness and effectiveness. Copyright (c) 2023 The Authors.

This paper concerns the combined production and maintenance plans for a manufacturing system satisfying a random demand. We propose a new optimization model transformed from the production policy model and a global approach for finding the optimal production/maintenance schedule. The numerical experiments illustrate the efficiency of our proposed model and a global method by comparing with the result of the literature works.

In this paper a mixed integer quadratic programming (MIQP) is proposed to solve the dynamic economic dispatch (DED) with valve-point effect (VPE), prohibited operation zones (POZs), and multiple fuel option (MFO). The non-convex, non-continuous cost functions caused by VPE, POZs, and MFO are piecewise linearized and solved by a MIQP. The effects of VPE, POZs, and MFO on the computation efficiency are analyzed. It shown that the VPE has much larger impact on the computation efficiency than POZs and MFO. The proposed method is tested on a 10-unit system.
