Coordination of Wind Farm and Pumped-Storage Hydro for a Self-Healing Power Grid

The increasing penetration of wind energy poses great challenges to the operation of power systems in normal and emergency states. However, energy storage technologies can help accommodate wind power uncertainty and variability due to their flexible characteristics. This paper focuses on the restoration phase, and provides a novel coordination strategy of wind and pumped-storage hydro (PSH) units for a faster and reliable self-healing process. The wind-PSH assisted power system restoration is formulated as a two-stage adaptive robust optimization problem. The first-stage problem determines the start-up sequence of generators and the energization times of transmission paths;and the second-stage problem decides load pickup sequences, wind power dispatch levels, and PSH units' operating modes. The column-and-constraint generation decomposition algorithm is applied to solve the two-stage adaptive robust optimization problem, which has a mixed-integer optimization in the inner-level problem. The developed coordination strategy is tested on the modified IEEE 39-bus system. Numerical results demonstrate that the coordinated wind and PSH units can increase the total energy served, enhance wind power dispatchability, and reduce wind power curtailment.

Multi-objective optimization for sustainable renewable jet fuel production: A case study of corn stover based supply chain system in Midwestern US

Sustainable development of biomass-based renewable jet fuel (RJF) production mitigates the environmental stress and improves rural economics. We develop a mixed-integer linear programming model to incorporate spatial, agricultural, techno-economical, and environmental data for multi-objective optimization of RJF supply chain systems. The model is applied to the Midwestern U.S. to evaluate the sustainability performance of three pathways including alcohol-to-jet (ATJ), Fischer-Tropsch (FT) and Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL). The results show that HTL is the most cost-effective with a cost of $4.64/gal while FT is most environmental-friendly with the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of 0.10 kg CO2/gal. The cost-optimal analysis suggests a centralized supply chain configuration with large facilities, while the environmental optimization analysis prefers a distributed system with small biorefinery facilities. For FT approach, cost optimization analysis suggests developing a supply chain with one large biorefinery, whereas environmental optimization prefers a system with 11 small biorefineries. Considering the economic and environmental factors simultaneously, the Pareto curve demonstrates that total production costs of three pathways all increase with the more stringent constraints of GHG emissions. This indicates that RJF production costs are sensitive to the regulation of GHG emissions. Considering the carbon price at $0.22 per kg of CO2 reduction, FT yields the lowest cost of $2.83/gal among three pathways, but it is still 47% higher than that of fossil jet fuel. FT is not cost competitive with fossil jet fuel until the carbon price increases to $0.30 per kg of CO2 reduction. FT is suggested a promising sustainable RJF production pathway due to its relatively low capital investment and production costs, centralized supply chain configuration, and low GHG emissions.

Short-circuit-constrained transmission expansion planning with bus splitting flexibility

Incorporation of the short-circuit level constraints in the transmission expansion planning (TEP) has a direct impact on the final solution. Conventionally, in TEP models, a substation is tackled as a single node where are all transmission lines, power transformers, and generating units are connected to each other. However, bus splitting is a common option in most substations that divides the connected elements into two groups. Doing so, bus splitting can alter the flow path impedances and accordingly manage the short-circuit levels. Here, the short-circuit level constraints are modelled in terms of conventional TEP and bus splitting decision variables. The modelling process is very complex and some non-linear terms appear in the models. To have a tractable model in real-world problems, the non-linearities are converted to linear equivalents making the final TEP model conforming the mixed-integer linear programming format. The performance of the proposed model is examined on the 24-bus reliability test system. The results show that incorporation of the bus splitting option in the TEP problem decreases the total cost of the optimal expansion plan.

Linepack planning models for gas transmission network under uncertainty

Open market transient behaviours create challenges for National Grid, the UK gas transmission network operator, in meeting limits on pressure and linepack, i.e. the quantity of gas in the network. In this paper, four mixed-integer linear programming models are proposed for the optimal linepack planning to compensate for the fluctuation of gas demand. The first model minimises total deviation between planned and targeted linepacks such that all the customer's demand and other network constraints are satisfied. The second model determines actions, including timings, to minimise total cost for resolving the gas deficit. We then extend this to a third model to deal with the periodical supply shortfall in the gas transmission network, and a fourth model to investigate the impact of compressor failure on the linepack management. The efficiency of these models is investigated and validated using real case study data. Experimental results show that our models can produce the optimal linepack plans under certain scenarios that current tools at National Grid cannot achieve. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. An optimization framework for scheduling of converter aisle operation in a nickel smelting plant

The scheduling of converter aisle operation in a nickel smelting plant is a complex task with significant ramifications to plant profitability and production. An optimization-based scheduling formulation is developed using a continuous-time paradigm to accurately represent event timings. The formulation accounts for environmental restrictions on sulfur dioxide emissions, using event timing constraints. Flash furnaces are characterized by a continuous inlet flow and intermittent, discrete material removal, which is captured via novel semi-continuous modeling. An innovative sequencing and symmetry-breaking scheme is introduced to exploit identical units operating in parallel. A rolling horizon feature is included to accommodate real-time optimization. Tightening constraints are developed to improve the computational performance. A unique, multi-tiered procedure enhances the practicality of the solution and supports additional operability objectives, without compromising the optimality of the primary objective. An efficient strategy for the activation of MIP relaxations in a multicore global MINLP solver

Solving mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) problems to optimality is a NP-hard problem, for which many deterministic global optimization algorithms and solvers have been recently developed. MINLPs can be relaxed in various ways, including via mixed-integer linear programming (MIP), nonlinear programming, and linear programming. There is a tradeoff between the quality of the bounds and CPU time requirements of these relaxations. Unfortunately, these tradeoffs are problem-dependent and cannot be predicted beforehand. This paper proposes a new dynamic strategy for activating and deactivating MIP relaxations in various stages of a branch-and-bound algorithm. The primary contribution of the proposed strategy is that it does not use meta-parameters, thus avoiding parameter tuning. Additionally, this paper proposes a strategy that capitalizes on the availability of parallel MIP solver technology to exploit multicore computing hardware while solving MINLPs. Computational tests for various benchmark libraries reveal that our MIP activation strategy works efficiently in single-core and multicore environments.

Subloop-based reversal of port rotation directions for container liner shipping network alteration

Container liner shipping network alteration is a practical manner of shipping network design, which aims to make minor modifications to ameliorate the existing network. In a generic liner shipping network with butterfly ports, each ship route is separated into a set of subloops on the basis of its structure and internal butterfly ports. Reversing the subloop directions has an impact on the network-wide cost including inventory cost, transshipment cost, and slot-purchasing cost. This paper proposes a new destination-based nonlinear model for the subloop-based reversal of port rotation directions with the objective of minimizing the overall network-wide cost. We prove that the addressed problem is NP hard. Next, the model is transformed to an equivalent mixed-integer linear programming model. Based on the structure of the reformulated model, we develop a Benders decomposition (BD) algorithm and a metaheuristic method to solve practical-size instances. Three acceleration strategies are incorporated into the BD algorithm, which are adding Pareto-optimal cuts, updating big-M coefficients and generating combinatorial Benders cuts. Case studies based on three small examples and an Asia-Europe-Oceania liner shipping network with a total of 46 ports are conducted. Results show that the problem could be efficiently solved by the accelerated BD algorithm and the optimization of subloop directions is conducive to decreasing the network-wide cost especially the inventory cost. A State Transition MIP Formulation for the Unit Commitment Problem

In this paper, we present the state-transition formulation for the unit commitment (UC) problem. This formulation uses new decision variables that capture the state transitions of the generators, instead of their on/off statuses. We show that this new approach produces a formulation which naturally includes valid inequalities, commonly used to strengthen other formulations. We demonstrate the performance of the state-transition formulation and observe that it leads to improved solution times especially in longer time-horizon instances. As an important consequence, the new formulation allows us to solve realistic instances in less than 12 minutes on an ordinary desktop PC, leading to a speed-up of a factor of almost two, in comparison to the nearest contender. Finally, we demonstrate the value of considering longer planning horizons in UC problems.

Scheduling and Pricing of Energy Generation and Storage in Power Systems

This paper proposes a fundamental model for continuous-time scheduling and marginal pricing of energy generation and storage in day-ahead power systems operation. The paper begins with formulating the economic operation problem of power systems with generating units and energy storage (ES) devices as a continuous-time optimal control problem, where the Lagrange multiplier trajectory associated with the continuous-time power balance constraint is proven to be the marginal price of energy generation and storage. The marginal price is calculated in closed-form, which reveals that in addition to the incremental cost rates of generating units, the marginal price embeds the financial ES charging offers and discharging bids that are defined as incremental charging utility and incremental discharging cost rates. This paper shows that the adjoint function associated with the ES state equation establishes a temporal dependence between the marginal prices during the ES charge and discharge states. A function space-based method is developed to solve the proposed model, which converts the continuous-time problem into a mixed-integer linear programming problem with finite dimensional decision space. The features of the proposed scheduling and pricing models are demonstrated using numerical studies conducted on the IEEE Reliability Test System.

An integrated approach for the rectangular delineation of management zones and the crop planning problems

This article proposes an integration of the Delineation of Rectangular Management Zones (DRMZ) with the Crop Planning Problem (CPP) in precision agriculture. The first problem consists in partitioning the agricultural fields into chemical and physical management zones satisfying a specific homogeneity level considering the soil properties. These partitions are commonly used to improve agricultural practices such as fertilization, irrigation and pests control, to name a few. The second problem considers the management zones, to determine the best crop for each plot maximizing the profit. We propose an integrated optimization problem determining the decisions of both problems simultaneously. The latter problem is formulated through a non-linear program, and we implement linearization techniques to obtain high-quality solutions with a commercial solver for instances generated at random based on real-data of agricultural activities in Mexico. We compare our integrated method to a sequential approach based on solving the DRMZ that minimizes the number of management zones, and then, finding a solution for the CPP. Numerical results for the integrated method restricted to the number of management zones found by the sequential one show an average increment of 1.77% in the profit compared to the sequential approach, but the average increment can be up to 5.38% when there are no limitations for the number of management zones. Finally, a sensitivity analysis considering variability for the amount of water shows that it may be recommended to define a non-deterministic approach in further research due to the significant changes in the obtained profits.
