Optimal operations management of residential energy supply networks with power and heat interchanges

An optimal operations management system of residential energy supply networks employing power and heat interchanges among cogeneration units and storage tanks was developed. This system integrated energy demand prediction, operation scheduling to predicted energy demand using mixed-integer linear programming, and real-time control for the cogeneration units and the heat interchange hierarchically. The energy demand prediction and operation scheduling were updated using a receding horizon approach. The novelty of the study is characterized by developing an operations management framework for heat interchange among storage tanks and by proposing an event-driven receding horizon approach. The developed operations management system was applied to annual operating simulation of a residential energy supply network, consisting of four fuel cell-based cogeneration units and four storage tanks. The results showed that employing the power and heat interchanges increases a reduction rate of annual primary energy consumption by 3.24 and 5.63 percentage points relative to the power interchange operation and separate operation of the cogeneration units, respectively. Moreover, the event-driven receding horizon approach based on heat interchange schedule maintained an energy-saving performance subequal to the conventional receding horizon approach and reduced the daily receding number by 46.7% of the conventional receding horizon approach. The growing increase of renewable generation worldwide is posing new challenges for a secure, reliable, and economic operation of power systems. In order to face the uncertain and intermittent production of renewable sources, operating reserves must be allocated efficiently and accurately. Nowadays, these reserves are mainly assigned to thermal units, especially gas-fired generators, due to their operation flexibility and fast response. However, the ramping capabilities of these units define the grade of flexibility offered to the system operation. In practical applications, ramping limits are dynamic, i.e., they are a function of the unit's generating output. Omitting this feature leads to suboptimal or even infeasible reserve allocations, thus increasing not only operating reserve requirements but also transactions in real-time balancing markets needed to back up deviations of renewable generation. This paper contributes with a mixed-integer linear programming model for units' dynamic ramping allowing intraperiod changes in the unit commitment problem. As a result, operating reserves are better allocated and the units' flexibility is managed more efficiently than traditional ramping models found in the literature. Different case studies illustrate the functioning and benefits of the proposed formulation.

Modeling the impact of competing utilization paths on biomass-to-liquid (BtL) supply chains

Second generation biofuels offer the opportunity to mitigate emissions from the growing transportation sector while respecting the scarcity of arable land in agriculture. Biomass-to-liquid (BtL) concepts based on large-scale gasification are capable of using low-quality residual feedstock, such as wheat straw or forest residues, for the production of transportation fuels. However, large amounts of biomass feedstock are required to achieve the economic capacity of a synthesis plant. Depending on the steepness of the terrain and the role of feedstock owners, biomass potentials can only be utilized to a large extent at increasing costs per ton. Such diseconomies of scale are particularly problematic in the presence of already established value chains consuming the easily accessible and low-cost feedstock. As a result, second-generation biofuel supply chains face steep supply curves with sharply increasing unit costs. This article investigates the impact of established utilization paths on a large-scale biofuel production value chain. To do so, a mixed-integer linear model is presented which first determines the allocation of biomass resources to CHP plants and domestic consumers. Based on the resulting costs and supply curves, the model then determines the optimum configuration of the synfuel supply chain including locations and capacities of conversion plants, feedstock procurement and transportation. The model is applied to a case study covering six regions in south-central Chile. The total supply chain cost for the production of synthetic gasoline is estimated to amount to 0.8-0.9 (sic) per liter. Feedstock costs of the synfuel supply chain are 20-50% higher in comparison to the price paid by CHP plants and households. The results indicate that both torrefaction and fast pyrolysis can be applied beneficially to utilize remote biomass resources which are less in demand by established consumers.

The management of the economy and the mathematical formulation of the problem of optimal dynamic (multiperiod) logistic planning of the initial and modified supply chain of a gas condensate stabilization plant has been suggested in the form of a multidimensional mixed-integer linear programming problem. An interactive procedure for solving this problem has been developed using the Oracle Strategic Network Optimization software suite. Optimal logistic planning parameters have been calculated for the new modified supply chain with the commissioning of a new plant for processing a wide fraction of light hydrocarbons.

A Unit Commitment Algorithm and a Compact MILP Model for Short-Term Hydro-Power Generation Scheduling

This paper presents a unit commitment algorithm that defines each unit discharge given the water head, the total plant downstream flow, the variable discharge upper limit, the unit efficiency curves, and the restricted operating zones in order to maximize power efficiency. This algorithm is part of the preprocessing phase that is intended to approximate a hydro-power production function that represents individualized unit decisions. A compact mixed-integer linear programming formulation, with fewer integer variables, based on an equivalent unit model and a piecewise linear generation function, is proposed. The unit commitment is integrated without increasing the model size and complexity due to the preprocessing phase. Moreover, the optimal aggregate decision is automatically converted to unit decisions by the proposed algorithm. The coordination with mid/long-term planning is performed by taking into account the power demand allocated to the hydro-power plants. Numerical tests on Brazilian hydro-power plants demonstrate that the proposed formulation has lower computational cost than unit individualized models considering a given accuracy level for the generation function approximation.

Multistage Security-Constrained HVAC/HVDC Transmission Expansion Planning With a Reduced Search Space

This paper proposes a new method to solve the multistage security-constrained transmission expansion planning problem, incorporating lines based on high-voltage alternating current (HVAC) and high-voltage direct current (HVDC) alternatives. A novel mixed-integer linear programming model, which incorporates transmission losses using a piecewise linearization, is presented. An efficient method to reduce the search space of the problem is developed to help in the solution process. Garver's 6-bus system and a modified Southern Brazilian system are used to show the precision and efficiency of the proposed approach. The tests are performed for cases with and without HVDC links and transmission losses. The results indicate that better expansion plans can be found by considering HVDC proposals in the expansion process. The promising trend of using HVDC lines in future networks to improve the reliability in the system is demonstrated.

Integrating employee timetabling with scheduling of machines and transporters in a job-shop environment: A mathematical formulation and an Anarchic Society Optimization algorithm

This paper addresses a ternary-integration scheduling problem that incorporates employee timetabling into the scheduling of machines and transporters in a job-shop environment with a finite number of heterogeneous transporters where the objective is to minimize the completion time of all jobs. The problem is first formulated as a mixed-integer linear programming model. Then, an Anarchic Society Optimization (ASO) algorithm is developed to solve large-sized instances of the problem. The formulation is used to solve small-sized instances and to evaluate the quality of the solutions obtained for instances with larger sizes. A comprehensive numerical study is carried out to assess the performance of the proposed ASO algorithm. The algorithm is compared with three alternative metaheuristic algorithms. It is also compared with several algorithms developed in the literature for the integrated scheduling of machines and transporters. Moreover, the algorithms are tested on a set of adapted benchmark instances for an integrated problem of machine scheduling and employee timetabling. The numerical analysis suggests that the ASO algorithm is both effective and efficient in solving large-sized instances of the proposed integrated job shop scheduling problem. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. Coordinated TCSC Allocation and Network Reinforcements Planning With Wind Power

Integration of wind power plants into power systems requires special attention on network planning to reduce curtailed wind energy as well as investment costs and generation costs. To this aim, in this study, transmission expansion planning, reactive power planning, and the allocation of TCSC devices are coordinated in order to minimize investment costs of transmission lines, reactive power sources, and TCSC devices along with the sum of generation costs and penalty for load curtailment. Installed wind power plants are modeled by using load-wind scenarios, which are obtained by clustering procedure. They are integrated into the constraints of the proposed method via linearized ac power flow equations. This assures keeping the proposed method as mixed-integer linear programming problem. The proposed method is applied to the Garver 6-bus and IEEE 24-bus RTS test systems under different case studies. Results prove the contributions of the coordinated network planning.

Optimal network design of hydrogen production by integrated utility and biogas supply networks

This research aims to develop a mathematical model to construct a network model for producing hydrogen by integrated utility and biogas supply networks (IUBSNs). In this model, a utility supply network exists in a huge petrochemical industry while a biogas supply network consists of a wastewater treatment plant and anaerobic digestion. Pipelines connect the utility and biogas supply networks. The steam reforming process, which is the most well-known process able to generate large amounts of hydrogen, is employed to harness hydrogen as well as to integrate the two networks. In IUBSNs, the needed steam is obtained by optimizing a utility supply network while methane-rich biogas is generated by placing anaerobic digestion tanks into a number of wastewater treatment plants allocated by region. This study uses an algorithm for solving the mixed-integer linear programming problems to minimize the total annual costs of IUBSNs and simultaneously satisfy hydrogen demand. IUBSNs can be a great alternative to a hydrogen supply network that imports and consumes fossil fuels to produce hydrogen, furthermore, it is able to positively influence environmental issues through the reduction of the amount of fossil fuel used in petrochemical industries. A case study of the Republic of Korea illustrates the feasibility of the proposed model. Three cases (base case, only optimized utility supply networks, and IUBSNs) are conducted, and an increase in hydrogen demand is applied to each case. The results demonstrate that IUBSNs construction decreases the total costs by about 13% compared to the existing situation, and as hydrogen demand increases, the gas pipeline structure in IUBSNs employs a hub city to transport biogas flexibly.

RETRACTED: Optimal transmission switching in the stochastic linearised SCUC for uncertainty management of the wind power generation and equipment failures (Retracted Article)

This study recommends a stochastic optimisation model for the security-constrained unit commitment (SCUC), which incorporates the optimal transmission switching (OTS) for managing the uncertainty of wind power generation and equipment failures, i.e. outage unit/line. Also, this study presents a technique in stochastic SCUC model with the OTS action using the AC optimal power flow (AC-OPF). The AC-OPF provides a more accurate picture of power flow in the power system compared to the DC optimal power flow that is usually considered in the literature for the stochastic SCUC models and OTS action. While the stochastic SCUC model with the OTS action based on the AC-OPF is a mixed-integer non-linear programming model, this study transforms it into a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model. The MILP approach uses a piecewise linear model of the AC-OPF, which allows the reactive power and voltage to be considered directly in power flow model. This transformation guarantees achievement of a global optimal solution by the existing software and algorithms. The proposed stochastic SCUC problem is evaluated on the 6-bus and IEEE 118-bus test systems in pre- and post-transmission switching action. Obtained results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed model.
