Optimal operations management of residential energy supply networks with power and heat interchanges

An optimal operations management system of residential energy supply networks employing power and heat interchanges among cogeneration units and storage tanks was developed. This system integrated energy demand prediction, operation scheduling to predicted energy demand using mixed-integer linear programming, and real-time control for the cogeneration units and the heat interchange hierarchically. The energy demand prediction and operation scheduling were updated using a receding horizon approach. The novelty of the study is characterized by developing an operations management framework for heat interchange among storage tanks and by proposing an event-driven receding horizon approach. The developed operations management system was applied to annual operating simulation of a residential energy supply network, consisting of four fuel cell-based cogeneration units and four storage tanks. The results showed that employing the power and heat interchanges increases a reduction rate of annual primary energy consumption by 3.24 and 5.63 percentage points relative to the power interchange operation and separate operation of the cogeneration units, respectively. Moreover, the event-driven receding horizon approach based on heat interchange schedule maintained an energy-saving performance subequal to the conventional receding horizon approach and reduced the daily receding number by 46.7% of the conventional receding horizon approach. Modeling the impact of competing utilization paths on biomass-to-liquid (BtL) supply chains

Second generation biofuels offer the opportunity to mitigate emissions from the growing transportation sector while respecting the scarcity of arable land in agriculture. Biomass-to-liquid (BtL) concepts based on large-scale gasification are capable of using low-quality residual feedstock, such as wheat straw or forest residues, for the production of transportation fuels. However, large amounts of biomass feedstock are required to achieve the economic capacity of a synthesis plant. Depending on the steepness of the terrain and the role of feedstock owners, biomass potentials can only be utilized to a large extent at increasing costs per ton. Such diseconomies of scale are particularly problematic in the presence of already established value chains consuming the easily accessible and low-cost feedstock. As a result, second-generation biofuel supply chains face steep supply curves with sharply increasing unit costs. This article investigates the impact of established utilization paths on a large-scale biofuel production value chain. To do so, a mixed-integer linear model is presented which first determines the allocation of biomass resources to CHP plants and domestic consumers. Based on the resulting costs and supply curves, the model then determines the optimum configuration of the synfuel supply chain including locations and capacities of conversion plants, feedstock procurement and transportation. The model is applied to a case study covering six regions in south-central Chile. The total supply chain cost for the production of synthetic gasoline is estimated to amount to 0.8-0.9 (sic) per liter. Feedstock costs of the synfuel supply chain are 20-50% higher in comparison to the price paid by CHP plants and households. The results indicate that both torrefaction and fast pyrolysis can be applied beneficially to utilize remote biomass resources which are less in demand by established consumers.

An MILP model for the static transmission expansion planning problem including HVAC/HVDC links, security constraints and power losses with a reduced search space

This paper presents a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model to solve the transmission network expansion planning (TNEP) problem, considering HVDC and HVAC proposals with security constraints and the system operation cost. The use of an MILP model guarantees convergence to optimality by using existing classical optimization methods. The operation cost is associated with the cost of transmission losses in the system. In this model, the HVDC lines can be either monopolar or bipolar type. Due to the size and complexity of the problem, a new method to reduce the search space solution is proposed, taking into account line losses, HVDC links, and contingencies. The set of HVDC lines in the proposal may use either line-commutated converters or voltage source converters. The model was implemented using the AMPL modeling language and solved using the CPLEX commercial solver. The Southern Brazilian electrical system was used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed MILP model;tests were performed for cases with and without HVDC links, and with and without the system operation cost. The results show high quality solutions, and high performance when the search space reduction methodology (SSRM) is used. The computational time with the SSRM (the study case with HVDC and operation cost) was reduced by 85.9% with respect to the case that uses the complete search space, and also, the optimal solution was found. The importance of including the operation cost as an objective to be minimized is shown. The cost of losses is reduced by 55.7% when comparing the cases with and without the cost of operation included in the objective function and with HVDC lines as proposals. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. Multi-stage farm management optimization under environmental and crop rotation constraints

This paper presents a novel multi-stage optimization model for farm management during a certain planning time horizon. The salient features of this optimization model are the proper incorporation of crop rotation schemes and the consideration of crop impacts on the environment via linear environmental constraints. This decision support tool produces an optimal crop rotation plan (i.e. which crop to cultivate each year and their area) which maximizes farmer' profit while satisfying specified environmental constraints and crop rotation schemes requirements. The optimization model is formulated as a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) problem for which sound and powerful solvers exist. The paper thoroughly investigates the impact of various types of environmental constraints, which aim at maintaining the environmental impacts of farm attivities below specified levels either overall, i.e. over the entire planning horizon, or tight, i.e. after each crop rotation. The environmental constraints are derived by adopting a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) approach. The proposed approach is illustrated, without loss of generality, using agriculture system data specific to Luxembourg. The impact of a variety of environmental constraints, including greenhouse gas emissions and European Union (EU) common agricultural policy (CAP), is discussed. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. An open-source model for optimal design and operation of industrial energy systems

This paper presents a detailed mixed-integer linear optimization model for capacity-expansion planning and unit commitment of a factory's distributed energy supply system. The model identifies the cost optimal configurations of specified energy-conversion processes and storage techniques to cover the factory's energy demand. The general formulation of the model allows it to deal with a large number of energy-system structures. The main constraint of the model is that it must cover given demand time series for different commodities such as electricity, heating and cooling. For each commodity, storage units with different technical and economic parameters as well as a possible external connection considering time-sensitive prices for import/export and peak demand charges can be defined. The model allows the users to specify processes, for converting between the different types of commodities. The conversion processes can handle multiple inputs and outputs and consider part-load performance as well as start-up behavior. The objective of the model is to find the optimal design and operation of the industrial energy system with minimal investment and operational costs. A case study based on the measured electric- and heat-demand time series of four different factories is presented, investigating the economic efficiency of combined heat and power (CHP) units and battery storage systems. The results show, that the decision as to whether CHP units are used, mainly depends on the relationship between gas and electricity costs, while the load profile of the factories and the applied pricing program only influence their size. Batteries are only considered in the results when their investment costs are reduced and they have little influence on the total cost. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Optimized dispatch in a first-principles concentrating solar power production model

Concentrating solar power towers, which include a steam-Rankine cycle with molten salt thermal energy storage, is an emerging technology whose maximum effectiveness relies on an optimal operational and dispatch policy. Given parameters such as start-up and shut-down penalties, expected electricity price profiles, solar availability, and system interoperability requirements, this paper seeks a profit maximizing solution that determines start-up and shut-down times for the power cycle and solar receiver, and the times at which to dispatch stored and instantaneous quantities of energy over a 48-h horizon at hourly fidelity. The mixed-integer linear program (MIP) is subject to constraints including: (i) minimum and maximum rates of start-up and shut-down, (ii) energy balance, including energetic state of the system as a whole and its components, (iii) logical rules governing the operational modes of the power cycle and solar receiver, and (iv) operational consistency between time periods. The novelty in this work lies in the successful integration of a dispatch optimization model into a detailed techno-economic analysis tool, specifically, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory's System Advisor Model (SAM). The MIP produces an optimized operating strategy, historically determined via a heuristic. Using several market electricity pricing profiles, we present comparative results for a system with and without dispatch optimization, indicating that dispatch optimization can improve plant profitability by 5-20% and thereby alter the economics of concentrating solar power technology. While we examine a molten salt power tower system, this analysis is equally applicable to the more mature concentrating solar parabolic trough system with thermal energy storage. Cargo scheduling decision support for offshore oil and gas production: a case study

Woodside Energy Ltd (Woodside), Australia's largest independent oil and gas company, operates multiple oil and gas facilities off the coast of Western Australia. These facilities require regular cargo shipments from supply vessels based in Karratha, Western Australia. In this paper, we describe a decision support model for scheduling the cargo shipments to minimize travel cost and trip duration, subject to various operational restrictions including vessel capacities, cargo demands at the facilities, time windows at the facilities, and base opening times. The model is a type of non-standard vehicle routing problem involving multiple supply vessels-a primary supply vessel that visits every facility during a round trip taking at most 1 week, and other supply vessels that are used on an ad hoc basis when the primary vessel cannot meet all cargo demands. We validate the model via test simulations using real data provided by Woodside.

Minimising work overload in mixed-model assembly lines with different types of operators: a case study from the truck industry

This paper considers the problem of sequencing mixed-model assembly lines (MMALs). Our goal is to determine the sequence of products to minimise work overload. This problem is known as the MMAL sequencing problem with work overload minimisation: we explicitly use task operation times to find the product sequence. This paper is based on an industrial case study of a truck assembly line. In this industrial context, as a reaction to work overloads, operators at the workstations finish their tasks before the product reaches the next workstation, but at the expense of fatigue. Furthermore, there are different types of operators, each with different task responsibilities. The originality of this work is to model this new way of reacting against work overloads, to integrate three operator types in the sequencing model and to apply the developed methods in a real industrial context. To solve this problem, we propose three meta-heuristic procedures: genetic algorithm, simulated annealing and a combination of these two meta-heuristics. All the methods proposed are tested on industrial data and compared to the solutions obtained using a mixed-integer linear programme. The results show that the proposed methods considerably improve the results of the current procedure used in the case study.

A Unit Commitment Algorithm and a Compact MILP Model for Short-Term Hydro-Power Generation Scheduling

This paper presents a unit commitment algorithm that defines each unit discharge given the water head, the total plant downstream flow, the variable discharge upper limit, the unit efficiency curves, and the restricted operating zones in order to maximize power efficiency. This algorithm is part of the preprocessing phase that is intended to approximate a hydro-power production function that represents individualized unit decisions. A compact mixed-integer linear programming formulation, with fewer integer variables, based on an equivalent unit model and a piecewise linear generation function, is proposed. The unit commitment is integrated without increasing the model size and complexity due to the preprocessing phase. Moreover, the optimal aggregate decision is automatically converted to unit decisions by the proposed algorithm. The coordination with mid/long-term planning is performed by taking into account the power demand allocated to the hydro-power plants. Numerical tests on Brazilian hydro-power plants demonstrate that the proposed formulation has lower computational cost than unit individualized models considering a given accuracy level for the generation function approximation.

Multistage Security-Constrained HVAC/HVDC Transmission Expansion Planning With a Reduced Search Space

This paper proposes a new method to solve the multistage security-constrained transmission expansion planning problem, incorporating lines based on high-voltage alternating current (HVAC) and high-voltage direct current (HVDC) alternatives. A novel mixed-integer linear programming model, which incorporates transmission losses using a piecewise linearization, is presented. An efficient method to reduce the search space of the problem is developed to help in the solution process. Garver's 6-bus system and a modified Southern Brazilian system are used to show the precision and efficiency of the proposed approach. The tests are performed for cases with and without HVDC links and transmission losses. The results indicate that better expansion plans can be found by considering HVDC proposals in the expansion process. The promising trend of using HVDC lines in future networks to improve the reliability in the system is demonstrated.
