In this paper, we study an extension of atomic routing games for multi-class communication networks with quality of service requirements, which can be formulated as a network management scheme. Atomic routing games are noncooperative games with multiple selfish players, where each player has to choose a path in a given graph to route his traffic, and then pays the corresponding cost. We develop a mixed-integer nonlinear programming model for the network management scheme in this class-based communication network. The analysis of this work offers appropriate resource allocation and a routing database identifying suitable end-to-end paths upon each connection request.

The Optimal Power Flow (OPF) problem is commonly formulated considering one central operator manager (centralized approach). However, in practice, the power system is structured by interconnected areas, controlled by several system operators, which are dependent on their neighbors and must exchange sensitive data with each other. In addition, some generation units must be restricted in some zones of operation to avoid negative operational effects. This paper proposes a mixed-integer nonlinear programming model to solve the decentralized AC-OPF considering prohibited operation zones (POZ). A matheuristic algorithm based on the variable neighborhood descent heuristic method is used to deal with the integer variables of the problem, while a non-linear optimization solver is used to solve the optimal power flow with continuous variables. The proposed model and solution technique are validated using the IEEE 118-bus system, ensuring that the decentralized model determines solutions close to the centralized model without and with POZ constraints.

Given a factorable function f, we propose a procedure that constructs a concave underestimator of f that is tight at a given point. These underestimators can be used to generate intersection cuts. A peculiarity of these underestimators is that they do not rely on a bounded domain. We propose a strengthening procedure for the intersection cuts that exploits the bounds of the domain. Finally, we propose an extension of monoidal strengthening to take advantage of the integrality of the non-basic variables.

This paper presents an optimal dispatch algorithm to coordinate customer-owned controllable loads and smart solar inverters with utility-owned voltage regulators and capacitors to meet voltage control objectives. The optimization problem is formulated as a mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) problem. A voltage sensitivity matrix (VSM) is used to linearize the effect of control actions on the voltage at customer nodes when solving the MINLP. The VSM is recalculated at each time step to improve the computational accuracy. Both discrete switching actions of the capacitor and VRs and the continuous adjustment of real and reactive power from load and smart inverters are considered in the MINLP volt-var problem formulation. The objective function minimizes the cost of all control actions and the magnitude of voltage fluctuations from the previous time period. Constraints ensure that the voltage at each node is maintained within ANSI limits and the feeder power factor is controlled within the desired range. The algorithm is tested using an actual 3-phase unbalanced distribution feeder model. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm is computationally feasible on real circuits and improves voltage control while minimizing operational costs.

This paper proposes a decimal codification genetic algorithm to solve the transmission network expansion planning (TNEP) problem considering the economic impact of line maintenance. The goal is to extend the lifespan of the time-worn lines in order to reduce the investment cost in the expansion of the transmission network and to improve the worth of the transmission system. To assess the economic impact of the maintenance on the deterioration of transmission lines and transformers, the sum of years digit method is implemented. The proposed algorithm is evaluated using the IEEE reliability test system, and the assessment of the results shows that by including the effect of line maintenance on the TNEP problem, significant savings can be made in the overall cost of the system.

We are concerned with a capacitated location-multi allocation-routing problem in a road network with flexible travel times. It is assumed that all links are two-way and capacities of the server nodes and arcs for accepting of population are limited. The aim of our work is to find numbers and locations of server nodes, allocation of the existing population in existing demand nodes on the network to the servers and the allocation of existing population in each node to different routes to determine the decided server for each member so that total transportation time is minimized. Here, two basic concepts are considered: multi allocation and flexible travel times. The concept of multi allocation arises from the possibility of allocating the existing population in a demand node to more than one server node. Also, flexible travel times concentrate on impact of traveling population on the times of links simultaneously, that is, depending on how the population is distributed on the network, the travel times on links may be increased. So, to have the least increase in the time of each link, it is necessary to decide upon the distribution of population in the network. We formulate the proposed problem as a mixed-integer nonlinear programming model and then present a genetic algorithm (GA) for solving large problems Finally, we make two sets of numerical experiments and analyze the obtained results by LINGO solver and GA. A Microgrid-assisted methodology is proposed in this paper for electric service restoration in distribution networks. Success of restoration algorithms is closely tied with the availability of sufficient capacity on the restoration path(s). When the restoration path is at or near full capacity, some capacity relief may be achieved through the usage of Microgrids. By increasing the generation level of its micro-generators, reducing the demand of its demand responsive loads, or, as the last resort, by islanding from the grid, a Microgrid can help alleviate the congestion on the restoration path, and therefore assist the service restoration algorithm. The methodology put forth in this paper considers a potential restoration circuit equipped with Microgrids, and provides the most cost-effective operational solution while achieving the targeted restoration capacity. Network operational constraints, demand variations, and fluctuations in energy pricing are all taken into account. The problem is formulated as a mixed-integer nonlinear programming problem, and is implemented on a modified version of the IEEE 123-node test distribution system.

This paper develops a fuzzy chance constrained mixed-integer nonlinear programming (FCC-MINLP) model and the solution methods for refinery short-term crude oil scheduling problem under demands uncertainty. To reduce the calculation complexity of the model, it is transformed into its equivalent fuzzy chance constrained mixed-integer linear programming (FCC-MILP) model by using the method of Quesada & Grossmann [5]. After that the FCC-MILP model is solved through its crisp equivalent algorithm and fuzzy simulation algorithm rely on the theory presented by Liu & 1wamura [12][13] for the first time in this area. Finally, a case study which has 265 continuous variables, 68 binary variables and 318 constraints is effectively solved in LINGO 8.0 [8] with the proposed approaches.

Sailing Speed and Fleet Deployment Optimization for Intercontinental Container Liner Shipping Considering Cargo Time Value

This article collectively addresses the issues of optimizing the sailing speed of containerships and fleet deployment in intercontinental container liner shipping, taking cargo time values into consideration. A mixed-integer nonlinear programming model is developed to maximize the gross profits of a container shipping line. The sailing speed is divided into 0.1 knot intervals and a reciprocal- discretization method is proposed to transform the model into an integer-based linear programming model, which can be solved using optimization solvers such as CPLEX. A case study is conducted based on the Far East-West America liner route of a global container shipping line to assess the effectiveness of the proposed model and the reciprocal- discretization method. The results show that when the cargo time value is taken into consideration, the increased sailing speed of containerships on long legs and the decreased number of deployed containerships will generate greater operating profits for the container shipping line. The rise in bunker price will lead to a stepwise decline in sailing speed of containerships and a stepwise growth in the number of deployed containerships. Moreover, the downward trend of sailing speed due to the increase of bunker price will be somewhat delayed as the unit container cargo value increases. Several useful insights are drawn from analysis of the results.

Component failures within water supply systems can lead to significant performance losses. One way to address these losses is the explicit anticipation of failures within the design process. We consider a water supply system for high-rise buildings, where pump failures are the most likely failure scenarios. We explicitly consider these failures within an early design stage which leads to a more resilient system, i.e., a system which is able to operate under a predefined number of arbitrary pump failures. We use a mathematical optimization approach to compute such a resilient design. This is based on a multi-stage model for topology optimization, which can be described by a system of nonlinear inequalities and integrality constraints. Such a model has to be both computationally tractable and to represent the real-world system accurately. We therefore validate the algorithmic solutions using experiments on a scaled test rig for high-rise buildings. The test rig allows for an arbitrary connection of pumps to reproduce scaled versions of booster station designs for high-rise buildings. We experimentally verify the applicability of the presented optimization model and that the proposed resilience properties are also fulfilled in real systems. © 2021, The Author(s).
