Uncovering post-adoption usage of AI-based voice assistants: a technology affordance lens using a mixed-methods approach

Despite the growing proliferation of AI-based voice assistants in our daily lives, how different functions of AI-based voice assistants affect users' post-adoption usage behaviours remains an under-investigated research question. This study explores the nature and causation of post-adoption usage behaviours (effective utilisation after initial adoption or diffusion) within the context of AI-based voice assistants. Using a sequential mixed-methods research design, we first identify the post-adoption usage behaviours of AI-based voice assistants as a multidimensional concept comprised of routine use and extended use, then develop a contextualised model by revealing technology-specific antecedents, cognitive beliefs, and boundary conditions. By integrating results from the quantitative study and qualitative study, we find that three technology affordances (i.e., anthropomorphism affordance, interactivity affordance, and personalisation affordance) are salient antecedents of two cognitive beliefs, which further affect users' routine use and extended use of AI-based voice assistants. Additionally, we uncover use frequency as a boundary condition and obtain a complementary view of post-adoption usage of AI-based voice assistants. The empirical research findings can extend the post-adoption IS usage literature and provide practical implications for crafting user-centred functionalities to facilitate effective human-AI interactions.

PurposeThe rapid global use of Financial Technology (FinTech), an innovative and advanced technology, is leading to the replacement of traditional financial services. Despite this, consumers in the United Arab Emirates are still not accepting FinTech services as anticipated. This study aims to investigate the barriers preventing consumers from using FinTech services in the banking industry based on the technology-organisation-environment (TOE) framework and anchored by the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT).Design/methodology/approachThe current study used an exploratory sequential mixed-method design. A purposive sample was used to conduct preliminary semi-structured interviews with ten banking practitioners. These interviews aimed to explore the obstacles that hinder consumers from adopting FinTech services. To provide further empirical validation, the conceptual model has been systematically examined through a quantitative cross-sectional online survey encompassing a sample of 332 bank *** qualitative investigation highlighted six new barriers to the usage of FinTech based on TOE's model attributes. Through quantitative data analysis, the preliminary qualitative findings were primarily verified. It was discovered that self-efficacy, electronic word-of-mouth, system quality and bank image substantially influence consumers to use FinTech services, in addition to performance expectancy and facilitating conditions. Meanwhile, IT features and governmental support were found to have insignificant effects. Yet, government support was found to have a positive moderating role in strengthening social influence and system quality towards customer use of FinTech. Identifying and understanding digital exclusion: a mixed-methods study

Many of our transactions and interactions are now exclusively online;however, whilst we live in a world which is becoming ubiquitously digital, digital exclusion remains a complex societal issue. This study aimed to identify the scale and characteristics of 'digitally excluded' individuals in one borough in North East England and investigate factors influencing experiences of digital exclusion. A two-phase, sequential explanatory mixed-methods design was used. Phase One utilised a survey which was sent to every household in the borough (N = >98,000). The surveys (N = 9181) were analysed using exploratory univariate analysis, followed by a two-staged regression model. Of those responses, 1130 individuals (12.3%) were identified as digitally excluded. Older adults with disability, no or low-level education, and residing in specific (micro) geographical areas, were at higher risk of digital exclusion. Smaller household sizes and lower income also contributed to digitally exclusion. To further enhance inclusivity, three focus groups were conducted with groups who were identified as being at higher risk of digital exclusion (N = 10). Discussions highlighted the complexities of digital exclusion and digital use across communities and within individual circumstances. Digital exclusion is multi-factored and complex. It requires regional institutions and local communities to collaborate in an integrated governance framework to improve digital inclusion.

Nutrition plays a crucial role in human and planetary health, as prevailing nutritional patterns significantly contribute to the global non-communicable disease pandemic. Moreover, the global food system is inextricably linked to planetary health deterioration. The relevance of nutrition for individual and planetary health is insufficiently addressed in German medical schools. Here, we present a two-week course for medical students in the 8th semester at Charit & eacute;- Universit & auml;tsmedizin Berlin on nutrition and fasting in the context of human and planetary health. The course was developed iteratively along the Kern cycle for medical curricula and underwent evaluation through a mixed-methods design spanning across two consecutive semesters. Assessment involved quantitative questionnaires and qualitative interviews. The main exploratory outcome was the overall module rating. Further outcomes encompassed in-depth evaluations of specific aspects, including content, teaching methods, instructor performance, and subjective experiential aspects. The conceptualisation resulted in a highly participative two-week course of 37.5 h. The main learning objectives aimed at the acquisition of technical competences and personal competencies in four areas: (1) the role of nutrition in health and disease;(2) the exploration of global food systems;(3) communication on subjects of nutrition;(4) culinary medicine. Various interactive didactic methodologies were used. 77.8% (n = 27) of the participants rated the course as very good or good. The conviction that nutrition influences health and disease increased over the course (Wilcoxon signed rank test, z = -2.82, p = 0.005, r = 0.57). In the qualitative interviews (n = 8) the course content, its didactical diversity and the positive group experience were appreciated. Our results indicate that it could be worthwhile to further incorporate nutrition curricula in medical education.

Factors influencing seniors' switching to m-government services: A mixed-methods study through the lens of push-pull-mooring framework

Based on the push-pull-mooring framework, this study applies mixed methods to examine the key factors affecting seniors' switching from offline to m-government services. A qualitative study was conducted to identify five factors of the push-pull-mooring framework, and a subsequent quantitative study used a hybrid SEM-ANN method to analyze data from 345 senior Chinese users. Results showed that transparency greatly impacts seniors' satisfaction with m-government services. Perceived inefficiency significantly affects dissatisfaction with offline services, and inertia increases switching costs. However, perceived government investment does not significantly affect seniors' satisfaction with m-government services. An urban-rural comparison yielded additional findings.

Open gyms and physical activity in a university setting: A mixed-methods study from Varanasi, India

BackgroundThe prevalence of physical inactivity in India is estimated to be 34%;the highest prevalence in South Asian countries. Physical inactivity has increased the risk of non-communicable diseases among urban Indians. Built environment interventions that aim to enhance physical activity have gained popularity in recent years. The construction of outdoor gymnasiums (hereafter referred to as OGs) in green spaces is one such intervention. The installation of OGs on university campuses is a novel concept. The present study was designed to explore the usage of OGs and the perceptions of the users about OGs in a public university *** sequential mixed-methods study design was used to inform this two-fold study. In the first phase (Quantitative), four OGs (i.e. OG-A, OG-B, OG-C, OG-D) were observed between 6.00 am and 8.00 pm for one week per month from December 2022 to March 2023 which corresponds to winter and spring time in Varanasi, India. In the second phase (Qualitative), face-to-face, semi-structured in-depth interviews (N = 66) with a purposive sample of (OG) users were conducted in Hindi. Descriptive statistics and thematic analysis were used to analyze quantitative and qualitative data *** data revealed that the OGs were more frequently used during spring as compared to winter. OG-C emerged as the most popular gym across the four-month period as it hosted the highest number of users (N = 3384) followed by OG-D (N = 2380), OG-B (N = 2004), and OG-A (N = 792). Another major observation was that OGs were more likely to be used by males than females. OGs were more crowded over weekends than weekdays. The thematic analysis of qualitative interview data revealed three main themes and associated sub-themes: (i) Perceived benefits associated with the use of OGs (physical and mental health benefits, proximity to nature, opportunity to socialize, safe environment, economical, ease of access for everyone);(ii) Perceived challeng

Understanding Electric Bike Accidents Through Safe System Approach in Guangzhou, China: A mixed-methods Study

Electric bike (e-bike) accidents have emerged as a significant road safety concern in recent years. Employing a mixed-methods approach, this study seeks to elucidate the mechanisms underlying e-bike accidents and to develop an e-bike safe system aimed at enhancing e-bike safety and accident prevention. Quantitative analysis was employed to identify key components and their relationships through an event-based examination of a structured accident dataset using a Bayesian network. Complementing this, qualitative methods-including observations and interviews-were conducted to gain deeper insights into how riders interact with other components within the system. This study was carried out in Guangzhou, a metropolitan city with an increasing use of e-bikes and e-bike-related accidents. The key findings of this study are as follows: 1. The safe system of e-bike safety comprises critical components, including infrastructure (roads and facilities), e-bikes, riding behavior, individual riders, and other road users. 2. E-bike accidents predominantly result from dysfunctions of the safe system. The alteration of one component influences other components, which may, in turn, provide feedback to the original component. 3. While riders' mistakes play a role, the interactions between riders and other components also contribute to the accidents. 4. At the individual rider level, barriers to safe riding include a lack of safety knowledge, low penalties for violations, and high opportunity costs associated with safe riding behaviors. Deficiencies in infrastructure, regulations, and law enforcement contribute to violations and risky riding practices. This study contributes to the current body of accident studies by developing an e-bike safe system.

Building information modeling (BIM) and blockchain applications have introduced significant benefits to the architecture, engineering, construction, and operation (AECO) industry in recent years. Although publications on BIM and blockchain integration have been increasing, no systematic examination of the present status and managerial implications of integrated BIM and blockchain has been conducted. To bridge this gap, this paper conducts a state-of-the-art review of the development of integrated BIM and blockchain in a built environment. A combination of qualitative and quantitative methods was adopted to synthesize and analyze the research evidence. The results revealed five key managerial implications of BIM integration with blockchain at the project level: design and collaboration, financial management, construction management, information management, and integration management (with other cutting-edge technologies). Challenges and opportunities are outlined and articulated from both technological and managerial perspectives, such as stakeholder management, impact assessment, real-time project management, information redundancy, and incompatibility.

A physiotherapist-led biopsychosocial education and exercise programme for patients with chronic low back pain in Ghana: a mixed-methods feasibility study

BackgroundLow back pain is a common musculoskeletal condition which causes substantial disability globally. The biopsychosocial model of management has been recommended in national and international guidelines for the management of patients with chronic low back pain (CLBP). However, biopsychosocial approaches are predominantly delivered in high income countries (HICs), although the prevalence of LBP is substantially higher in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) especially in Africa (39%;95% CI 30-47). Understanding the effectiveness of BPS interventions in LMICs especially in Africa is underexplored, with substantial inequity between research from HICs and LMICs. Ghana is a LMIC where the effectiveness of biopsychosocial interventions has been underexplored. Therefore, the aim of this study was to explore the feasibility of delivering a physiotherapist-led BPS programme for the management of patients with CLBP in *** was a mixed-methods, sequential, pretest-posttest feasibility study. Participants involved thirty patients with CLBP. The biopsychosocial intervention involved an exercise and patient education programme based on principles of cognitive behavioural strategies with emphasis on self-management. The biopsychosocial intervention was delivered for six weeks for each participant. Feasibility outcomes regarding management and processes were captured pre-intervention, post-intervention, and three-months post intervention. Semi-structured interviews were conducted post-intervention to explore participants' experiences with the biopsychosocial intervention. Patients' demographics were collected at baseline. Patient reported outcome measures such as intensity of pain, disability, pain catastrophising, kinesiophobia, self-efficacy, and general quality of life, were collected pre-intervention, post-intervention and at three-months follow-up. Family-Integrated Advance Care Planning for Cancer Patients: A mixed-methods Feasibility Study

Context. Advance care planning programs which focus on facilitating conversations among families are scant. We developed a family-integrated Serious Illness Conversation Guide (SICG-Fam). Objectives. This study aims to examine the ability and acceptability of the SICG-Fam for advanced cancer patients, family members and physicians in Japan. methods. Trained physicians provided their patients and family members with serious illness conversations using the SICGFam. Data regarding ability and acceptability were collected through questionnaires and semi-structured interviews with patients, family members and physicians. Descriptive statistics and thematic analyses were conducted for data analysis. Results. From February to May 2023, 10 physicians and 22 dyads comprising 22 patients and 24 family members participated. Physicians had a median of 19 years' experience. Each item in the SICG-Fam was delivered by physicians in 18-22 of all the 22 conversations. Patients and family members, except for one family member, judged the conversation as being helpful to discuss their respective views on patients' wishes. Two patients and four family members evaluated the conversation as distressing. Family context, including family relationships, and how physicians engage with them, including supportive attitudes and encouraging patients and family members to express their views, affected the perceived helpfulness of the conversation. Conclusion. The SICG-Fam was delivered by physicians and accepted by patients and family members. However, how physicians consider the family perception of the conversation may mitigate potential patient and family member distress. Future studies should focus on further refining the intervention to address the identified challenges and rigorously investigate the effectiveness of this approach.
