Pricing and Logistics Decisions for a Private-Sector Provider in the Cash Supply Chain

We study a problem faced by a secure-logistics provider (SLP) of maximizing profit by jointly pricing the services of fit-sorting and transporting cash along with the design of the supporting logistics network, in a market consisting of a population of Depository Institutions (DIs). The need to jointly price the services assumes significance because they are partial substitutes of one another. Our study finds that the influence of the logistics network on prices is especially strong when there are non-linearities in the cost of provisioning the logistics services. Furthermore, the impact of logistics decisions on different types of pricing schemes (e.g., volume discount, bundled pricing) is different, both in its structure and extent. In present times, when the market for the fit-sorting service is relatively immature, our findings have major implications to the way an SLP's business is managed.

This paper analyzes the impact of natural gas supply, increased penetration of renewable energy sources and shifting demand trends due to tight financial conditions on generating unit maintenance scheduling. The main focus is on the increased importance of enhancing unit availability in periods of concurrent peak electricity and natural gas demand and limited RES contribution, through proper adjustment of power system maintenance rules. In power systems with peak demand in summer and high photovoltaic penetration, this translates into enforcing unit availability during winter. A detailed mixedinteger linear programming model for the yearly maintenance scheduling of a System Operator is developed with GAMS/CPLEX in order to evaluate modifications in maintenance rules. The same model is used to assess the consequences of a short-term natural gas shortage contingency scenario, given the maintenance decisions of the yearly scheduling process. The method is applied to the Greek power system.

Renewable energy integration is gradually increasing in several European countries, such as Portugal and Spain, aiming to reduce emissions in power system operations. Particularly, significant investments in hydro energy systems are envisaged in Portugal, representing a secure and reliable energy source towards sustainable development. Additionally, a pool market structure implies that producers should aim at maximizing profits on a day-ahead basis. Usually, hydro power producers have been considered as price-takers, accepting the price signal as input data. Instead, a MILP approach is provided in this paper to determine the operations planning of a hydro producer acting as a price-maker in a day-ahead electricity market. A realistic case study is presented, based on a hydro energy system in cascaded configuration characterized by spatial-temporal interdependency between reservoirs, in order to thoroughly evaluate the expertise of the proposed approach.

Energy efficiency and computational reliability are two key concerns associated with modern computations that involve computational resource sharing and highly uncertain job arrivals from various sources (customers). In 2010, large-scale data center operations consume around 2% of the total energy use in the US. Meanwhile, the development of cloud computing in the IT industry possesses great potential for lowering energy consumption by partitioning and scheduling job requests among multiple computational servers. In this paper, we formulate stochastic integer programming models to minimize energy consumption of cloud computing servers over finite time periods, while maintaining a pre-specified quality of service (QoS) level for satisfying uncertain computational requests. The models dynamically monitor and predict customer requests for each period, and proactively switch servers on/off according to estimated customer requests. QoS levels are maintained by either enforcing zero unsatisfied requests, or imposing a joint chance constraint to bound possible failures in a backlogging model. When uncertain requests follow continuous distributions, we employ the Sampling Average Approximation for generating scenario-based requests. Such an approach transforms the original probabilistic model into deterministic mixed-integer linear programs. We further demonstrate computational results of all models by testing instances with different parameter combinations, and investigate how backlogging, unit penalty cost and QoS levels influence computational performances and optimal solutions.

A mixed-integer nonlinear programming model is proposed in this paper for reducing excessive standing phase angle difference (SPA) across open circuit breakers in transmission loop paralleling operation. The model adopts both the active power generation increment and the load switch as control variables and takes the relative importance of the loads to be restored into account, resulting in fewer rescheduled generators and less adjustment of active power generation. The condition for transmission loop paralleling operation can be reached from two ways of reducing generator adjustment time and optimally restoring load. The method can improve power restoration efficiency, speed up restoration progress, and hence reduce the loss of outage. Simulation results of New England 10-machine 39-bus test system demonstrate the effectiveness of the method.

Improving performance of wind turbines through effective control strategies to reduce the power generation cost is highly desired by the wind industry. The majority of the literature on performance of wind turbines has focused on models derived from principles versed in physics. Physics-based models are usually complex and not accurate due to the fact that wind turbines involve mechanical, electrical, and software components. These components interact with each other and are subjected to variable loads introduced by the wind as well as the rotating elements of the wind turbine. Recent advances in data acquisition systems allow collection of large volumes of wind energy data. Although the prime purpose of data collection is monitoring conditions of wind turbines, the collected data offers a golden opportunity to address most challenging issues of wind turbine systems. In this dissertation, data mining is applied to construct accurate models based on the turbine collected data. To solve the data-driven models, evolutionary computation algorithms are applied. As data-driven based models are non-parametric, the evolutionary computation approach makes an ideal solution tool. Optimizing wind turbines with different objectives is studied to accomplish different research goals. Two research directions of wind turbines performance are pursued, optimizing a wind turbine performance and optimizing a wind farm performance. The goal of single wind turbine optimization is to improve wind turbine efficiency and its life-cycle. The performance optimization of a wind farm is to minimize the total cost of operating a wind farm based on the computed turbine scheduling strategies. The methodology presented in the dissertation is applicable to processes besides wind industry.

With liberalizing electricity market, consumers are incurred more electricity price volatilities. Accordingly, they may present parts of their demand as responsive loads (RLs) with the purpose of reducing the prices and providing favorable reliability level for the system. RLs are identified as resources from demand-side which can participate in reliability-triggered events and/or ancillary services by different demand response (DR) programs. In this paper, RLs take part in Emergency Demand Response Programs (EDRPs) during reliability-triggered events while Demand-Side Ancillary Services Programs (DSASPs) are implemented along with spinning and non-spinning reserves from generation-side to satisfy the system security constraints economically. The Reserve procurement from both sides is carried out by risk curve formed for each bus of system base on the credibility and expected consequences of contingencies and also the responding rate of reserve resources in a short-term stochastic security-constrained unit commitment (SCUC) model. The RBTS and IEEE-RTS are considered to illustrate the effects of participating RLs in the joint energy and reserve market.

Extravehicular Activity (EVA) is a specialized function performed during spaceflights in which two or more astronauts don spacesuits to perform tasks on the exterior of their spacecraft. An extensive and iterative planning process is required to prepare for each highly choreographed EVA operation. The current planning process relies heavily upon time-consuming heuristic approaches by subject matter experts to essentially "hand-build" each EVA plan. This research develops the EVA Planning Model (EPM), a linear, mixed-integer program intended as a proof-of- concept demonstration for employing formal mathematical optimization techniques to EVA planning. The EPM is thoroughly tested to verify that it functions as intended and is evaluated by expert EVA planners using actual task information. We find that the EPM proves the concept that formal mathematical optimization can be used to aid in subject matter experts in EVA development and planning. It is particularly useful in allowing the evaluation of alternative planning inputs and thorough assessment of EVA plan impacts resulting from external changes.

This paper considers the class scheduling and timetabling problem faced at Kuwait University (KU). The principal focus is to design efficient class offering patterns while taking into consideration newly imposed gender policies. We formulate a mathematical programming model that assigns offered classes to time-slots and addresses gender issues by defining appropriate surrogate constraints along with objective penalty terms. The model aims to enhance existing manual scheduling and timetabling approaches that are often accompanied with arduous combinatorial tasks such as resolving class conflicts, dealing with parking and traffic congestion, and ensuring an efficient utilization of facility and human resources. This modeling approach emphasizes the generation of flexible class timetables for students, and the efficient utilization of available facility resources. Computational results based on a number of case studies related to Kuwait University reveal that this approach yields improved schedules in terms of offering patterns and class conflicts.
