Sustainable supply chain network design: A case of the glass manufacturer in Asia

Traditionally, profit maximization was the major objective for many businesses. However, due to growing stakeholders' pressure and awareness about the social and environmental impacts of supply chain activities, many companies are now focused on optimizing their profits, while reducing negative impacts of their activities on planet and society. While sustainable development requires concurrent and balanced consideration of social, environmental and economic dimensions, unbalanced approaches have been adopted both in real world practices, and in academic literature. We contribute to the stream of research in the literature that tries to address this gap. We propose a multi-objective mixed-integer programming (MOMIP) model for sustainable supply chain network design (SSCND), encompassing economic, environmental, and social objectives. Both strategic and tactical network design decision variables are considered, including location, size, and technology type of facilities, along with determining the flow of materials and transportation modes. The Normalized Normal Constraint Method is applied to generate evenly distributed Pareto frontiers. The case of a glass manufacturing company in Asia is used to demonstrate applicability of the model and solution procedure to real-world problems. Non-dominated solutions are analyzed, and a more sustainable and balanced network design alternative is proposed, which outperforms the current network configuration in terms of all three dimensions of sustainability. Managerial implications and future research directions are discussed.

An assessment of European electricity arbitrage using storage systems

Electricity arbitrage involves the storage of energy at times when prices are low, and offering it on the markets when prices are high. The development of renewable and energy storage technologies may provide a promising business opportunity for electricity arbitrage. In this regard, this study analyses the current viability of the electricity arbitrage business (via Li-Ion batteries) using a sample of European countries in the year 2019;countries where electricity prices (day-ahead market) and financial conditions show a certain degree of heterogeneity. We basically follow a sequence of three analyses in our study. Firstly, a Linear mixed-Integrated programming model has been developed to optimize the arbitrage strategy for each country in the sample. Secondly, using the cash-flows from the optimization model, we calculate two financial indicators (Net Present Value (NPV) and Internal Rate of Return) in order to select the optimal inverter size for each country. Tax and discount rates specific to each country have been used with the calculation of this second rate following the methodology proposed by most of the national agencies. Thirdly, a mixed linear regression model is proposed in order to investigate the importance of observed and unobserved heterogeneity (at country level) in explaining the business profitability. The findings show that, in the near future, the most attractive European countries for the electricity arbitrage business should be the United Kingdom and Ireland, with current NPV close to-400,000 V, while Spain and Portugal might show the worst performances, their current NPV are close to-800,000 V. Spatial optimization for reducing wind exposure of forest stands at the property level

Storms constitute one of the major natural disturbances in Sweden and its associated damages appear to be in an upward trend during the last 35 years in Europe. In addition, storm damages are expected to increase in the future due to the shortening of the soil frost period during the winter caused by climate change. Here we present a new optimization model to be used in forest planning for decreasing the wind exposure for storms over time through the minimization of vulnerable edges between neighbouring stands in a forest property. Three different cases were investigated where height differences of 5, 10 and 15 m between neighbouring stands were used to identify vulnerable edges in the property. The model, which accounts for the higher sensitivity of spruce compared to other tree species, was formulated as a mixed integer programming problem and solved using a branch and bound algorithm in a case study for a forest property in southern Sweden. In the case study, we investigated the trade-off between minimizing the length of vulnerable stand edges and the net present value from wood production. Our results show that it is possible to decrease vulnerable edge length with relatively moderate declines in the maximum achievable net present value, resulting in a clustering of dominant heights of neighbouring stands. Larger decreases in vulnerable edge length led to larger decreases in net present value, and an increased area proportion of forest older than 80 years. This model can easily be adapted to other planning problems in which edge effects are important.

A Computational Method for Estimating Travel Frequencies in Site Layout Planning

Optimizing the layout of facilities on a construction site to minimize the material handling costs has been widely investigated in the literature. An integral part of the objective function utilized in the previously proposed optimization models is the frequency parameter, which generally provides a rough estimate of the frequency of travel between each pair of facilities at a specific stage of the project. The majority of travel frequencies deduced in prior studies have been estimated merely based on past experience and may not be an actual representation of movements within the project studied. There is currently a lack of a systematic approach for estimating travel frequencies, required in site layout planning, based on the information available at early stages of the project. Obtaining a reasonable estimate of the travel frequency matrix requires a realistic evaluation of the material transportation quantities at each construction stage. This necessitates the utilization of information on the progress of different activities and their corresponding material needs during the various stages. This paper presents a framework for obtaining travel frequencies at different construction project phases by taking advantage of the information made available by building information models and project schedules. The estimated frequencies are later embedded as parameters in an optimization model to improve site layout planning. The results of a case study are presented to highlight the capabilities of the proposed framework. (C) 2015 American Society of Civil Engineers.

Industrial production processes involving both lot-sizing and cutting stock problems are common in many industrial settings. However, they are usually treated in a separate way, which could lead to costly production plans. Store-Wide Shelf-Space Allocation with Ripple Effects Driving Traffic

Given a store layout, product categories grouped into shelves, and historical sales data, we investigate how the allocation of product categories can be optimized in a fashion that guides in-store traffic and stimulates impulse buying. The latter constitutes an important shopping behavior that amounts to over 50% of the revenue in some retail settings. Considering a small-scale grocery store in Beirut, we analyze 40,000 customer receipts in order to relate in-store customer traffic to product shelf allocations and the store layout. This prompts the development of a predictive regression model that estimates traffic densities along a shelf as a function of the shelf-space allocation and the location of the shelf in the store. This traffic model captures a "ripple effect"-that is, the change in traffic throughout the store resulting from any change in product allocation to shelves. The customer traffic model is embedded within a mixed-integer nonlinear program that sets the shelf allocations across the entire store, thereby prescribing better location and shelf-space decisions for all product categories in a way that maximizes impulse buying. To overcome the computational challenges posed by the model, we develop a linear approximation for the traffic construct in the objective function, while keeping bilinear terms in the formulation, in order to derive lower and upper bounds on the optimal objective value. Our methodology produces a layout that yields a 65% improvement in the expected impulse profit for the grocery store in Beirut. Managerial insights into the structure of the proposed store configuration are also discussed. Specifically, the allocation of a fast-mover to a shelf directly drives traffic, not only through adjacent shelves, but also, indirectly, through more distant shelves that lead to it. This, in turn, creates advantageous locations for highimpulse products, which may not be in the immediate vicinity of fast-movers. Finally, the study suggests that

Recent advances in GPS and telecommunications technologies have made ridesharing a widespread practice around the world. By matching drivers and passengers with near-distance destinations and similar time schedules, ridesharing saves individuals travel costs by enabling them to share vehicles. It is also an effective way to reduce traffic congestion and greenhouse gas emissions. A ridesharing problem can be modeled as a dial-a-ride problem with time windows. This study looks at a solution to the dynamic ridesharing problem in which passengers share travel costs at the same ratio. We formulate the problem as a mixed-integer programming model and suggest a column generation approach. As the system's status is updated in real time, riders and drivers are matched, and new paths are created via column generation. Computational experiments show that our approach is superior to an existing algorithm when it is tested on instances of various sizes.

Logic-based Benders decomposition for the preemptive flexible job-shop scheduling problem

In this paper, we focus on exact methods to solve the preemptive flexible job-shop scheduling problem with makespan minimisation objective function. Mathematical and constraint programming models enable the resolution of this problem for small instances. However, as an NP-hard problem, the cost of solving grows rapidly when considering larger instances. In this regard, we propose a logic-based Benders decomposition that relies on an efficient branch-and-bound procedure to solve the subproblem representing a pure (non-flexible) preemptive job-shop scheduling problem. Computational experiments are carried out and show the very good performance of our proposals.

Simplified Approach to mixed-integer Chance-Constrained Optimization with Ensemble Streamflow Forecasts for Risk-Based Dam Operation

We developed an integrated optimization program to design the release strategy for a dam, given a downstream flow target and considering medium-range ensemble forecasts of downstream tributary flows. A strength of the program is its ability to explicitly limit the risk of downstream flooding through chance constraints. Embedded in the program is an advanced hydrological ensemble prediction system (HEPS). Given the ensemble nature of the downstream flow forecasts (in that they comprise sets of individual scenarios), we formulated the chance constraints as discontinuous mixed-integer equations. This makes the integrated program nondeterministic polynomial-time hard (NP-hard) and thus, intractable to be solved by conventional mixed-integer programming methods based on branch-and-bound. Thus, to solve the program, we took a simplified but innovative approach-possible through exploiting certain simplifying aspects of the problem-where we solved first for the integer (binary) variables following a ranking mechanism, then the continuous variables using nonlinear programming. The results for a case study of Hume Dam and Lake Mulwala in the Murray-Darling Basin, Australia, demonstrates the efficacy of the integrated program and our simplified approach to solving it. The results show the integrated program is able to meet the optimization target when the natural flow from tributaries is low. The results also show that when that natural flow is high, the integrated program's ability to meet the target to increase with the allowable risk of flooding. However, a higher allowable risk may lead to a higher possibility of flooding, depending on the problem specification. We recommend to run the integrated program on a continual basis because its results depend not only on the optimization for the current day, but also previous days. Two-stage optimal scheduling for flexibility and resilience tradeoff of PV-battery building via smart grid communication

Energy flexibility and energy resilience are now becoming new key features of building energy systems under the context of climate change and energy transition. During the system operation phase, these two performance indexes might be contradictory and require tradeoff. The main contribution of this study is to propose a two-stage mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model to optimally tradeoff between flexibility and resilience. Its main idea is to improve the resilience of building energy system with minimum constraints on system flexibility using the outage risk information provided by smart grid. Two new concepts are considered in the proposed method, including self-sufficient requirement and continuous outage probability. The insight is to add additional penalty for the time step in which its battery state of charge (SOC) is far from self-sufficient requirement while the corresponding continuous outage probability is high. To validate our proposed method, a probabilistic outage simulation model is developed using sigmoid function and Markov Chain. Comprehensive numerical studies are conducted to compare the proposed method with traditional economic mode and backup mode under two outage patterns. The results demonstrate that the proposed method only uses 6.7 % additional operation cost such that 78.3 % of baseload curtailment and 81.1 % of user discomfort are reduced. The proposed MILP model can provide practical guideline for the flexibility and resilience tradeoff of distributed energy resources.
