Piecewise linear approximations for hydropower production function applied on the hydrothermal unit commitment problem

In a centralized-based dispatch market, the network-constrained hydrothermal unit commitment (NCHTUC) determines generation decisions that minimize the expected operating cost, usually in a day-ahead planning horizon. In this context, hydropower offers unique flexibility features, and an adequate representation is crucial for overcoming operation challenges. However, due to computational burden, simplifications on hydropower production function (HPF) modeling are necessary since NCHTUC is a large-scale nonlinear discrete optimization problem. The plant-based HPF piecewise linear approach is the most common simplification presented for real life cases. In this case, the generating units (GUs) of a plant are aggregated and represented by a single equivalent generator. Although this approach reduces the size and the complexity of the NCHTUC significantly, several operating issues are not considered adequately, especially the forbidden zones and the nonlinearities of the GUs. In this paper, we present a new approach that considers the nonlinearities and forbidden zones of the HPF via aggregation of the GUs and piecewise mixed-integer linear approximation in an innovative way. Experiments are performed in a modified version of the IEEE 118-bus system to verify the approach's effectiveness, analyzed in terms of the relation between computation burden and the HPF approximation quality.

Electricity Distribution System Switch Optimization Under Incentive Reliability Scheme

The judicious placement of disconnecting switches is an efficient means to enhance the reliability of distribution networks. Aiming at optimizing the investment in these switches, this paper presents a mathematical programming-based model considering the installation of remote-controlled and manual switches at various locations in the distribution network. The proposed model not only yields the optimal location and type of switches in the main feeders but also specifies the optimal type of tie switches, i.e., backup switches at the reserve connection points. Incentive reliability regulation in the form of a reward-penalty scheme is incorporated into the proposed model to take the distribution service reliability worth into account realistically. In addition to this cost, the revenue lost due to energy undelivered during the distribution network faults is considered to determine the unreliability costs more accurately. In order to estimate such reliability-related costs, a novel reliability assessment technique is developed and integrated into the proposed switch optimization model. Formulated as an instance of mixed-integer linear programming, the proposed model is applied to a test distribution network, and the outcomes are investigated in detail.

Aircraft Maintenance Repair and Overhaul (MRO) is essential to ensure aviation safety and air transport operations. An aircraft has to temporally suspend its service and receive extensive maintenance in the hangar upon reaching the prescribed flying hours and take-off/landing times. Traditionally, each airline company undertakes hangar maintenance for its own fleet, however the nature of MRO operations has changed with the rapid development of air transport demand. Outsourcing hangar maintenance to maintenance service companies has been increasing among airlines, enabling airlines to reduce the cost of MRO while meeting the aircraft's safety requirements. After receiving the maintenance order with specifications, the maintenance service company needs to determine the maintenance schedules, parking stand allocation, aircraft movement path and staff assignment in the integrated planning problem. To integrate the abovementioned factors, a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model is developed. In the MILP model, geometric factors are considered, which are integrated with the multi-skill manpower assignment afterwards. Consideration of staff with multiple types of maintenance skills, aligning with the practice of sophisticated hangar maintenance, is incorporated in the model. Secondly, given the complexity of the integrated problem, a two-stage optimization approach is developed by decomposing the original model, which is coordinated by the linkage constraints between the geometric and numeric decision-making scattering in the decomposed subproblems. The results and analysis of numerical experimentation are reported, which shows: (i) the adaptability and efficiency of the two-stage optimization approach and (ii) the tractability of the two-stage optimization approach, which manage to produce good quality solutions in solving medium- to large- size instances. With the increasing concerns over sustainable development and environmental protection, wastewater treatment and recycling, a crucial issue to address to ensure an oilfield's economic and clean production, is of great significance to achieve water pollution prevention and rational and scientific use of water resources. In this paper, aiming at the optimal operation of oilfield wastewater treatment and recycling system, a multi-objective mixed-integer linear programming model is proposed to ensure minimum costs and maximum amounts of recycled water. Various technical and operational constraints of wastewater treatment stations, waterflooding stations, and water allocation rooms are taken into consideration. For the safe and efficient operation of the system, the flowrate and energy balance equations of water delivery and waterflooding networks are also included. The augmented epsilon-constraint method is introduced to deal with the two conflicting objectives and generate the Pareto front. Lastly, taking a real-world wastewater treatment and recycling system in the Xinjiang Oilfield, China, as an example, the model's validity and applicability as well as analysis of the conflicting objectives trade-offs are demonstrated. Compared with manually developed plans, the model solution could not only lower the total costs but also improve the staff working efficiency and the correlation of sub-systems. With different levels of importance given to sustainable development and operational economy, a set of optimal operation schemes can also be provided for reference and decision-support. A Long-Term Evaluation on Transmission Line Expansion Planning with Multistage Stochastic programming

The purpose of this paper is to apply multistage stochastic programming to the transmission line expansion planning problem, especially when uncertain demand scenarios exist. Since the problem of transmission line expansion planning requires an intensive computational load, dual decomposition is used to decompose the problem into smaller problems. Following this, progressive hedging and proximal bundle methods are used to restore the decomposed solutions to the original problems. mixed-integer linear programming is involved in the problem to decide where new transmission lines should be constructed or reinforced. However, integer variables in multistage stochastic programming (MSSP) are intractable since integer variables are not restored. Therefore, the branch-and-bound algorithm is applied to multistage stochastic programming methods to force convergence of integer *** addition, this paper suggests combining progressive hedging and dual decomposition in stochastic integer programming by sharing penalty parameters. The simulation results tested on the IEEE 30-bus system verify that our combined model sped up the computation and achieved higher accuracy by achieving the minimised cost.

Last-mile delivery: Optimal locker location under multinomial logit choice model

One innovative solution to the last-mile delivery problem is the self-service locker system. Motivated by a real case in Singapore, we consider a POP-Locker Alliance who operates a set of POP-stations and wishes to improve the last-mile delivery by opening new locker facilities. We propose a quantitative approach to determine the optimal locker location with the objective to maximize the overall service provided by the alliance. Customer's choices regarding the use of facilities are explicitly considered. They are predicted by a multinomial logit model. We then formulate the location problem as a multi-ratio linear-fractional 0-1 program and provide two solution approaches. The first one is to reformulate the original problem as a mixed-integer linear program, which is further strengthened using conditional McCormick inequalities. This approach is an exact method, developed for small-scale problems. For large-scale problems, we propose an alternating algorithm, i.e., Quadratic Transform with linear Alternating (QT-LA). The numerical experiment indicates that QT-LA is an efficient approach that yields high-quality solutions. Finally, we conducted a case study. The results highlighted the importance of considering the customers' choices. Under different parameter values of the multinomial logit model, the decisions could be completely different. Therefore, the parameter value should be carefully estimated in advance.

This study addresses the problem of reducing the energy consumption of the medium maglev (MSM) system by optimizing the train speed profile. Auxiliary stopping areas, the linear resistance caused by the linear motor, and the suspension energy consumption are sidered in the formulation of the speed profile optimization problem. Next, dynamic programming and mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) approaches that utilize these characteristics are proposed to solve the problem. The numerical results show that both approaches ensure train safety and energy-efficient operation. Furthermore, the MILP approach could be used emergency trajectory planning due to its shorter computational time.

Balancing of two-sided disassembly lines: Problem definition, MILP model and genetic algorithm approach

The recovery of end of life (EOL) products has become an important issue in terms of economic as well as social and environmental considerations. Recent rigid environmental regulations also contribute to the popularity of disassembly and product recovery topics among academicians and practitioners. Disassembly lines have been utilised to break EOL products into pieces and remove parts which can be reused in the manufacturing of new products. However, to the best of the authors' knowledge, there is no research on the two-sided disassembly lines, which are used for disassembly of large-sized products. Therefore, this research contributes to literature by introducing the two-sided disassembly line balancing problem (TDLBP) and modelling it mathematically for the first time. The problem is depicted and the challenges are explored through extensive numerical examples. Secondly, a powerful genetic algorithm approach, called 2-GA, is developed for solving the introduced TDLBP considering complex AND/OR precedence relations. Computational tests are conducted to test the performance of the proposed 2-GA and the results are compared to those obtained from CPLEX and tabu search algorithm. From the comparison of the obtained solutions, it can be concluded that 2-GA has a superior performance in finding optimal (or at least near-optimal) solutions usually within less than one second. An Auto-MILP Model for Flexible Job Shop Scheduling Problem

An auto mixed integer linear programming (Auto-MILP) model is proposed to tackle the flexible job shop scheduling problem. The Auto-MILP model allows the precedence between operations of a job to be given by an arbitrary directed acyclic graph rather than a linear order. The goal is the minimization of the makespan. By incorporating the operation assignment to resources, the Auto-MILP model also allows multiple production lines in the workshop, which means more than one machine could complete the same operation, and the machine assignment is determined by the algorithm. We utilize time separation to define the machine capacity, which makes it adaptive to various kinds of job scheduling scenarios. The effectiveness and efficiency of the Auto-MILP model are evaluated using instances from simulated scheduling case and real data from an industrial job shop.

Optimal placement of phase-reconfiguration devices in low-voltage distribution network with residential PV generation

As residential PV generation penetrates in the low-voltage distribution network (LVDN), the unbalance issue may be intensified due to the asymmetry of generations/loads in different phases. Phase-reconfiguration device (PRD), which can reconfigure connected phases of residential customers, provides an effective method to address this issue. Noting that although the benefit brought by PRDs can vary if they are placed at different locations in the network, little literature has been reported on this topic. To bridge the research gap, this paper presents a novel method to optimally place PRDs in an LVDN aiming at minimizing the power unbalance running through the distribution transformer. The problem considers both installation, operational constraints, and boils down to a challenging mixed-integer non-convex programming problem, which is then reformulated as an efficient solvable mixed-integer linear programming problem. Moreover, operational constraints are relaxed with slack variables penalized in the objective function, which makes sure a feasible solution is always available without or with minimal operational violations. Case studies based on a modified IEEE system and a practical system in Australia demonstrate that an efficient strategy can be provided to address the unbalance issue while improving the network's power supply qualities.
