We consider the coordinated vehicle platooning problem on a tree network with time constraints while the routes of vehicles are given. The problem is to coordinate the departure time of each vehicle to enable platoon formation hence maximizing the total fuel saving. For this problem setting, relative time windows can be defined for all vehicles to which an efficient time discretization can be applied. This property leads to a tight mixed-integer linear program reformulation as compared to the continuous-time formulation involving big-M coefficients proposed in our previous work. It is demonstrated by systematic numerical experiments that the reformulation outperforms the continuous-time formulation for this family of problem *** Codes 90-10 © 2022, CC BY.

Optimal planning of microgrids for resilient distribution networks

As severe weather events disrupt the power system more frequently and more harshly, the concern is growing around the ability of future grids to recover from such natural disasters. Recently, a major research focus has been on microgrids (MGs) as a potential source of resiliency. While most of the works done so far center on how to benefit from existing MGs through operation schemes, this study focuses on the planning of MGs to strengthen the network against severe faults. In this regard, three solution approaches are proposed aiming to determine the optimal nodes for the connection of MGs as well as the capacity of the dispatchable generation units deployed within MGs. These algorithms satisfy the power balance of MGs and the main grid as well as the operational and topological constraints. A computationally-efficient heuristic method is developed in two stationary (S-HM) and time-dependent (T-HM) versions. The concept of the heuristic approach, which was first introduced by the authors and is matured in this study, is based on a multi-stage search algorithm that efficiently reduces the undesirable restoration strategies and utilizes the original power flow equations. The other approach is a multiobjective mixed-integer linear programming (MO-MILP) that strives to find the globally-optimal solution in a time-dependent scheme. The validity of the outputs of these methods is assessed using an exhaustive search algorithm (ESA), capable of finding the globally-optimal solution. The MG model constitutes renewable and dispatchable generation units, energy storage systems, and local loads. The uncertainty of intermittent energy resources is tackled through robust optimization formulation based on the worst-case scenario. The performance of the proposed methods are evaluated by the IEEE 37and IEEE 123-bus test systems under several severe fault scenarios.

Each stage of the supply chain must be able to maximize value to achieve supply chain profitability. Handling production planning and distribution planning as a part of the supply chain are carried out to obtain optimal strategies that increase efficiency and reduce the risk of supply chain network failure. Distribution cost problems in the fulfillment of raw materials affect the total production costs as a whole. This paper proposes an integrated production and distribution planning in a multi-site plants model, in order to obtain optimal profit from production in each plant in a different location. This model uses a raw material fulfillment multi-suppliers scheme through a mixture of internal and external sources. mixed-integer linear programming method is used for model optimization by considering production capacity constraints, demand constraints, supply constraints, production costs, logistics costs, and product revenue. Analysis of various demand conditions was applied in the multi-suppliers scheme to see the sensitivity of the parameters.

In this work, the order sequencing problem is addressed, in which customer orders (composed of different individual tasks) are scheduled, where the objective function is the minimization of the total tardiness of completed orders. In the revised literature, approaches that address the order sequencing problem with machine setup times are quite limited. We present a new variant for the problem, in which the setup times depending on the production sequence are explicitly considered. As the variant under study is NP-diffi cult, a new formulation using linear integer programming, an adaptation of the Order-Scheculing Modifi ed Due-Date heuristic (OMDD) (referred to as Order-Scheculing Modifi ed Due-Date Setup (OMMD-S)), an adaptation of the Framinan and Perez-Gonzalez heuristic (FP) (hereinafter referred to as Framinan and Perez-Gonzalez Setup (FP-S)), a model with Same Permutation in All Machines (SPAM), and a SPAM-JPO matheuristic hybrid based on Job-Position Oscillation (JPO) are proposed. The extensive computational experience carried out shows that for the small-sized evaluated instances the SPAM is the most effi cient, presenting the lowest average and standard deviation of the values of Relative Deviation Index (RDI), while for the large-sized evaluated instances it shows that the SPAM-JPO matheuristic hybrid and mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) are the most effi cient, with SPAM-JPO matheuristic hybrid showing the lowest average and standard deviation of the RDI values.

Toward a more flexible VRP with pickup and delivery allowing consolidations

One important requirement of modern supply chain management is the frequent exchange of containers via multiple cross-docks which requires spatial and time synchronisations between different types of vehicle. Moreover, as collaborations in logistics between several companies become popular, more flexible and extended models must be solved to consider the different needs of the companies. This is of high importance in a new logistics concept, the Physical Internet, which is expected to considerably improve the way logistics are handled in the current supply chain management. To optimise the aforementioned requirements, a rich vehicle routing problem with pickup and delivery including numerous attributes is modelled and solved. A mathematical formulation is proposed and implemented in CPLEX to solve the problem. Given the complexity of the problem, solving large instances with exact methods is very time-consuming. Therefore, a multi-threaded meta-heuristic based on Simulated Annealing is developed. A set of new operators coupled with a restart strategy and memory are developed to help improve the performance. Computational results on a generated data-set showed that the proposed meta-heuristic is superior to the CPLEX solver in terms of solvability and computational time. The proposed metaheuristic was also compared with the best-known results by current state-of-the-art methods on a classical benchmark on pickup and delivery problems with time windows (with up to 200 customers). The experimental results showed that the proposed method was able to match the bestknown results in many of these large scale instances

Optimizing design and dispatch of a renewable energy system

Renewable energy technologies are becoming increasingly important due to their cost-competitiveness, and because of enhanced climate concerns. We demonstrate the capabilities of an integer-programming optimization model that minimizes capital (investment) and operational costs, and utility charges, while adhering to system sizing constraints, demand requirements, and interoperability characteristics of the systems chosen. The model recommends an optimally sized mix of renewable energy, conventional generation, and energy storage technologies, while simultaneously optimizing the corresponding dispatch strategy. Our case studies explore several venues, i.e., a small campus and a local hospital, with complex utility rate tariffs, multi-technology integration opportunities, and incentives for renewable power production. Using an optimization model, versus applying rules of thumb, can produce millions of dollars in savings over a 25-year time horizon and result in thousands of kilowatts of installed renewable energy.

Compact formulations for efficient early-phas e field development optimization of multi-reservoir fields

A compact formulation has been developed to efficiently optimize early-stage field development planning of multi-reservoir fields. The proposed formulation is a mixed-integer linear programming model which employs piecewise-linear functions to approximate the model non-linearities. The project economic value is maximized by optimizing the production allocation and the drilling schedule. The field production profiles are estimated with production potential curves calculated from simulated data of an integrated reservoir and surface facilities model. The novelties of this work are: a scalable model for the well combination selection, a logarithmic piecewise-linear model to approximate the well production potential curves, and the modeling and solution of realistic field development optimization problems. Through simulation analysis of a real field case study, the logarithmic and standard SOS2 formulations are compared in terms of computational performance and accuracy. The results show that the logarithmic formulation has significantly reduced the computational time and achieved improved accuracy over SOS2. (c) 2021 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Potential of Photovoltaic Panels on Building Envelopes for Decentralized District Energy Systems

The expected increase of the penetration of distributed renewable energy technologies into the electricity grid is expected to lead to major challenges. As a main stakeholder, authorities often lack the appropriate tools to frame and encourage the transition and monitor the impact of energy transition policies. This paper aims at combining relatively detailed modeling of the PV generation potential on the building's envelope while retaining the energy system optimization approach. The problem is addressed as a multiobjective, mixed-integer linear programming problem. Compared to the existing literature in the field, the proposed approach combines advanced modeling of the energy generation potential from PV panels with detailed representation of the district energy systems, thus allowing an accurate representation of the interaction between the energy generation from PV and the rest of the system. The proposed approach was applied to a typical residential district in Switzerland. The results of the application of the proposed method show that the district can achieve carbon neutrality based on PV energy alone, but this requires covering all the available district's rooftops and part of the district's facades. Whereas facades are generally disregarded due to their lower generation potential, the results also allow concluding that facade PV can be economically convenient for a wide range of electricity prices, including those currently used by the Swiss grid operators. Achieving self-sufficiency at district scale is challenging: it can be achieved by covering approximately 42-100% of the available surface when the round-trip efficiency decreases from 100 to 50%. The results underline the importance of storage for achieving self-sufficiency: even with 100%, round-trip efficiency for the storage, very large capacities are required. However, energy demand reduction through renovation would allow reaching self-sufficiency with half of the PV and storage capacity required.<

Optimal routing of ring power distribution systems

Ring medium voltage distribution systems provide a compromise solution between radial and meshed systems in terms of cost, flexibility, protection simplicity, and reliability. In this paper, optimal routing of ring power distribution systems is proposed. The problem is completely formulated in a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) form. A new modeling technique is proposed for network paths and nodes to accommodate return in the same cable trenches and load connection possibilities. Symmetry breaking constraints are introduced to eliminate symmetry in solutions. Load assignment to rings, cables routing, load buses order, un-energized parts in each ring and allocation of renewable energy sources (RES) are optimally decided for minimization of annualized investment, maintenance, losses and energy cost. Multiple loading levels, uncertainty in renewable generation, cables capacity and voltage drop constraints are considered. Moreover, an algorithm to determine optimal number of rings is proposed. The proposed optimization framework is applied to a multi-substation medium voltage layout, a real single substation distribution layout with transfer buses and 54 bus layout. The effects of single-feed restriction for rings and renewable energy sources with uncertain generation on overall cost are investigated. Uncertainty of renewable generation is embedded in the proposed optimization using stochastic programming (SP).

Automated decision support methodology for early planning phase of a multi-reservoir field

The field planning process is a crucial phase in the life of a hydrocarbon field when many design features must be decided upon. The field development team has the task of finding a configuration of these field design features which maximizes the value of the company's asset while considering several constraints. This paper presents a decision support methodology suitable for the early stage of the field planning process. The methodology is applied on a synthetic field called Safari. This field is characterized by having multiple reservoir units, where these reservoir units are non-communicating and have distinct properties. The reservoirs, namely Love, Nesehorn, and Sebra, have original oil-in-place (OOIP) of 75, 55, and 13 million sm(3), respectively. Both Love and Nesehorn have a permeability of 250 mD, whereas Sebra has a higher permeability of 450 mD. All these reservoirs lie 2500 m below the sea level with an initial reservoir pressure of 280 bara and an initial reservoir temperature of 80 degrees C. The main part of the methodology is a mathematical optimization that uses (i) proxy models to represent the flow performance of the production system and to estimate the development costs and (ii) piecewise linear (PWL) approximations to represent the non-linear functions. In this study, two optimization problems with the objective function to maximize plateau duration or net present value (NPV) are formulated and solved. The optimization models consider production schedule, drilling schedule, and recovery mechanism as the decision variables. Some constraints concerning production, injection, and drilling are also included in the optimization models. According to the optimization results, the objective value can be improved by considering more decision variables in the optimization problems.
