Assessing the potential of combined production and energy management in Industrial Energy Hubs - Analysis of a chipboard production plant

To minimize energy consumption in today's industry, holistic energy efficiency solutions are required. The Energy Hub is a promising concept for optimal energy management of industrial systems with multiple energy carriers like electricity, heat, or gas. However, most of the research conducted in this field focuses on optimal energy management and does not consider the scheduling of product in manufacturing processes. Though, including production scheduling in the energy optimization of manufacturing processes can considerably increase energy efficiency, especially if batch processes are involved. This work identifies the potential of combined energy and production scheduling in Industrial Energy Hubs, using a chipboard production process as a use case. The chipboard production plant includes a combined heat and power unit, units for production, and has two district heating demands as external requirements. A generic modeling and optimization framework, based on mixed-integer linear programming, is used to model and optimize different scenarios. The results show that the scheduling of product has a significant impact on the energy management of the chipboard production plant: The required energy for the production units can be reduced by approximately 30 %. Nevertheless, this potential can only be exploited if process design is adapted and excess heat is utilized appropriately. (c) 2021 The Author(s). Published by Elsevier Ltd. A case study on energy system optimization at neighborhood level based on simulated data: A building-specific approach

The residential sector is facing challenges to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, since its heat supply is largely based on fossil fuels. One way to accelerate the reduction process is seen in expanding energy planning from single buildings to groups of buildings, forming smart neighborhoods. This study presents a heat and power system optimization for a group of ten residential buildings located in a rural settlement in Germany. Thereby, a simulation platform is interlinked with an optimization model. Demand profiles, solar potentials and options of thermal refurbishment from the simulation platform serve as input data for the optimization model that considers numerous investment options for energy storage units and demand coverage. If costs of GHG emissions are considered in the optimization, a reduction of these emissions by about 60% compared to the status quo is cost-optimal. With regard to heat supply, the cost optimum is identified in the combination of decreasing heat demand through thermal refurbishments and covering the remaining demand mainly by heat from a combined heat and power (CHP) plant in addition with a wood-fired heating system. Therefore, the model results suggest to connect seven of the ten buildings via a local heating network. The demand for electricity is partly covered by the CHP plant, partly covered by solar generated electricity and partly covered by grid consumption. (c) 2021 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

An effective decomposition algorithm for scheduling branched multiproduct pipelines

This article develops a novel two-stage algorithm for the detailed scheduling of branched multiproduct pipeline systems with a single refinery and multiple depots. It features continuous-time models allowing multiple batches to be injected/delivered over a slot. The first-stage model reduces the complexity by neglecting the lower flowrate limits, enforced by big-M constraints. The objective is to minimize the makespan. The second-stage model works with the first-stage assignments and with an extended time grid. Coupled with a backtracking mechanism, the proposed algorithm can significantly reduce computational time and improve the pipeline transportation capacity. We use four benchmark instances from the literature to test and validate the effectiveness and superiority of the method proposed in this paper. Compared to the literature, a new optimal solution is reported in one case, while the computational time is reduced by at least one order of magnitude in the other cases. (c) 2021 Elsevier Ltd. Optimal Control Strategy for Distributed Energy Resources in a DC Microgrid for Energy Cost Reduction and Voltage Regulation

Distributed energy resources (DERs), including renewable energy resources (RESs) and electric vehicles (EVs), have a significant impact on distribution systems because they can cause bi-directional power flow in the distribution lines. Thus, the voltage regulation and thermal limits of the distribution system to mitigate from the excessive power generation or consumption should be considered. The focus of this study is on a control strategy for DERs in low-voltage DC microgrids to minimize the operating costs and maintain the distribution voltage within the normal range based on intelligent scheduling of the charging and discharging of EVs, and to take advantage of RESs such as photovoltaic (PV) plants. By considering the time-of-use electricity rates, we also propose a 24-h sliding window to mitigate uncertainties in loads and PV plants in which the output is time-varied and the EV arrival cannot be predicted. After obtaining a request from the EV owner, the proposed optimal DER control method satisfies the state-of-charge level for their next journey. We applied the voltage sensitivity factor obtained from a load-flow analysis to effectively maintain voltage profiles for the overall DC distribution system. The performance of the proposed optimal DER control method was evaluated with case studies and by comparison with conventional methods.

Impact analysis of investment coordination mechanisms in regional low-carbon logistics network design

This study aims to quantitatively evaluate the impact of logistics park investment coordination mechanisms on regional low-carbon logistics network design for multiple cities, including non-budget-sharing mechanism, centralized-budget-sharing mechanism and conditional-budget-sharing mechanism. First, a mixed-integer linear programming model on the non-budget-sharing mechanism is formulated, which aims to minimize the total amount of CO2 emissions generated from freight transport activities within a regional logistics network. The other two mechanisms are addressed to compare their effects on the system performance of the regional network. To empirically assess the effectiveness of the three mechanisms, a case study based on Changsha-Zhuzhou-Xiangtan regional low-carbon logistics network design is investigated. The findings show that the performance of the conditional-budget-sharing mechanism is superior to the non-budget-sharing mechanism, but inferior to the centralized-budget-sharing mechanism. Furthermore, the designed investment coordination mechanisms and corresponding optimization models provide a coordinated reference for multiple cities regarding logistics park investment and low-carbon logistics network design.

Energy management modeling for a community-based electric vehicle parking lots in a power distribution grid

A large share of greenhouse gases (GHGs) emissions is related to the transportation systems. These systems can be transformed into the clean transportation ones using the electric vehicles (EVs). Therefore, the power distribution grid (PDG) is required in the future sustainable cities to facilitate the integration of the EVs to these systems. In such systems, the operation problem of the power distribution grid operators (PDGOs) changes in the presence of electric vehicle parking lots (EVPLs). Although the different models are proposed for the operation problem of the PDGOs and parking lot (PL) owners (PLOs), the interaction among the PLOs in also needs new decision-making framework. Therefore, in this paper, an appropriate energy management model for the EVPL community is presented for the operational scheduling of several PLs which they trade energy with each other besides energy exchange with the PDGO to maximize their profits. This model is a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) problem which is solved by stochastic programming and using a simple additive weighting (SAW) method. The model also compares with two common models consisting of: 1) the PLO only purchases energy from PDGO, and 2) the PLO purchases/sells energy from/to the PDGO. The results show that in the proposed model in this paper the PLOs gain more profit in comparison with the common models. The profit depends on EVs' uncertainties and several factors that is investigated through the sensitivity analysis.

Optimizing Location of New Public Schools in Town Planning Considering Supply and Demand

Schools are some of the most critical public facilities in urban and metropolitan areas. The location of schools not only affects the costs of construction and travel but also significantly affects the social welfare of the residents through its impact on education quality among other factors. The impact of school location on education quality and social welfare in general is controlled mainly by the impact of location on the balance between supply and demand, which directly affects the access of students to quality education. Therefore, selecting the location of new schools by considering the impact of location on both social and economic factors is a critical town planning decision as billions of dollars are spent every year to build new schools in major metropolitan areas across the world. However, despite the significant efforts made in previous studies, the existing school location optimization models are focused mainly on costs and efficiency as key decision objectives and little attention has been made to the impact of location on maintaining and improving the education quality by considering the balance between supply and demand. In this paper, we formulate a school facility location selection model as a multiperiod facility location problem, where the objective function attempts to optimize the location of new schools to minimize the excess demand in the school network by building schools at strategic locations, subject to budget constraints and zoning restrictions. This formulation incorporates real-life parameters, including the availability of land in different areas of a city, the fluctuation of land prices from one location to another, and the possibility of building different sizes of facilities in a certain location. The proposed model is formulated using mixed-integer linear programming and can be solved by off-the-shelf optimization solvers. Product line selection of fast-moving consumer goods *

The fast-moving consumer goods sector relies on economies of scale. However, its assortments have been overextended as a means of market share appropriation and top-line growth. This paper studies the se-lection of the optimal set of products for fast-moving consumer goods producers to offer, as there is no previous model for product line selection that satisfies the requirements of the sector. Our mixed -integer programming model combines a multi-category attraction model with a capacitated lot-sizing problem, shared setups and safety stock. The multi-category attraction model predicts how the demand for each product responds to changes within the assortment. The capacitated lot-sizing problem allows us to account for the indirect production costs associated with different assortments. As seasonality is prevalent in consumer goods sales, the production plan optimally weights the trade-off between stocking finished goods from a long run with performing shorter runs with additional setups. Finally, the safety stock extension addresses the effect of the demand uncertainty associated with each assortment. With the computational experiments, we assess the value of our approach using data based on a real case. Our findings suggest that the benefits of a tailored approach are at their highest in scenarios typical fast-moving consumer goods industry: when capacity is tight, demand exhibits seasonal patterns and high service levels are required. This also occurs when the firm has a strong competitive position and consumer price-sensitivity is low. By testing the approach in two real-world instances, we show that this decision should not be made based on the current myopic industry practices. Lastly, our approach obtains profits of up to 9.4% higher than the current state-of-the-art models for product line selection. (c) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

MILP model for volt-var optimization considering chronological operation of distribution systems containing DERs

This paper presents a mixed-integer linear programming model for volt-var optimization considering the chronological operation of distribution systems containing distributed energy resources (DERs). The proposed model describes the operation problem of capacitor banks (CBs) and voltage regulators (VRs), and it is further based on the steady-state operation during each time interval contained in typical scenarios of distribution systems. A procedure using a K-means clustering algorithm is used to select the scenarios, thus preserving the simultaneity and chronological combination of different loads and DERs. According to the formulation that we developed, the regulation devices become sensitive to downstream load variations, since we use explicit current variables to control automatic CBs, and since we include means to compensate voltage drops along distribution lines in the control of VRs. The model is validated by comparing the results obtained during several tests of two typical cases with those obtained through nonlinear power flow. The typical case studies presented in the paper highlight the good agreement between the results obtained with the linearized model and with power flow method;further, the practical results confirm that the use of typical scenarios allows representing different levels of loads and DERs, while keeping the validity and performance of the proposed model.

MILP formulation and hybrid evolutionary algorithms for the glass container industry problem with multiple furnaces

The present paper approaches a production planning problem in the glass container industry (GCI) to redesign the production process. The redesign defines new furnaces and related molding machines, considering demand requirements or expansion plans for the industrial plant. First, we introduce a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model for such a problem. Next, we compare the results achieve by an exact method and two hybrid evolutionary algorithms when solving the problem. The exact method is the branch & cut (B&C) algorithm from the CPLEX solver that executes over the MILP model. The genetic algorithms are a standard genetic algorithm (GA) and a multi-population genetic algorithm (MPGA). Both methods evolve binary variables whose values allow solving the linear program (LP) model obtained from MILP. A greedy heuristic is also integrated to GA and MPGA to build an initial feasible solution for the LP model. A set of instances is generated with data provided by a GCI. The results indicate that B&C returns few optimal solutions for small-size problems, while GA and MPGA can solve large problems with relevant results in terms of solution quality and execution time.
