Robustness within the optimal economic polygeneration system for a dairy industry

This study synthesizes and optimizes a polygeneration system for a dairy industry located in Northeast Brazil. Based on the energy demands (steam, hot water, electricity, and chilled water), a superstructure was built to represent all the possible processes and connections of the energy supply system, using commercially available equipment and locally available energy sources. The optimization model is based on mixed-integer linear programming and its objective function is to minimize the total annual costs. The solution of the optimization problem determines the optimal combination between pieces of equipment, connections, and energy resources within the superstructure. A reference system is established, which does not include the possibilities of cogeneration nor biomass. The annual cost of the reference system is R$ 2,780,550/year. When the optimization model is freely solved, the optimal economic system yields an annual cost of R$ 2,074,793/year (25% lower). This reduction is reached by using diesel and natural gas cogeneration modules to substitute electricity from the grid at peak hours. Only 10% of the cogenerated heat is employed within the system (due to low thermal energy demands), and the remainder is evacuated by a cooling tower, Sensitivity analyses were carried out to assess the system behavior under variations of energy demands, fuel costs, and capital recovery factor, and the optimal economic solution presented good performance under fuel price variations, demonstrating robustness in most scenarios.

An integrated optimization approach using a collaborative strategy for sustainable cities freight transportation: A Case study

In recent years, the increasing freight transportation activities has caused extensive economic, environmental and social impacts on society. Therefore, it becomes necessary for logistics companies to find high-performance strategies to enhance their sustainability. Collaboration between companies appears as one of the promising solution that improves the freight transport efficiency of modern cities. Existing studies on collaborative trans-port did not sufficiently account for sustainability aspects and they mainly discuss the independent planning of decision-making problems with economic objectives. However, collaboration an integrated decision-making process can significantly ameliorate the effectiveness of urban transportation systems. This study addresses the issue of sustainable freight transportation planning by formulating and solving a collaborative and integrated two-echelon inventory, location and routing problem (2E-CILRP). The 2E-CILRP is formulated as a multi-objective integer programming model that minimizes logistics costs, CO2 emissions and accident rate. A hybrid heuristic based on machine learning is also introduced to solve the studied problem. The proposed approach combines k-means clustering and genetic algorithms. Comparison of the obtained results with those provided with exact method reveals that the developed approach is more efficient and more practical for designing integrated and collaborative networks with large-sized data. A case study of four agri-food SMEs in France is investigated in order to demonstrate the sustainable benefits of the developed optimization approach. The obtained results suggest that the developed approach can significantly reduce the level of CO2 emissions, logistics costs and accident rate caused by transportation in cities.

Studies on the energy-water-CO2 synergetic relationship is an effective way to help achieve the peak CO2 emission target and carbon neutral goal in global countries. One of the most valid way is to adjust through the electric power structure transformation. In this study, a mixed-integer linear resource planning model is proposed to investigate the energy-water-CO2 synergetic optimization relationship, concerning the uncertainties in the fuel price and power demand prediction process. Coupled with multiple CO2 emissions and water policy scenarios, Beijing, the capital city of China, is chosen as a case study. Results indicate that the demand-side management (DSM) level and the stricter environmental constraints can effectively push Beijing's power supply system in a much cleaner direction. The energy-water-CO2 relationship will reach a better balance under stricter environmental constraints and higher DSM level. However, the achievement of the energy-water-CO2 synergetic optimization will be at an expense of high system cost. Decision makers should adjust their strategies flexibly based on the practical planning situations.

This paper presents a new linear optimal power flow model for three-phase unbalanced electrical distribution systems considering binary variables. The proposed formulation is a mixed-integer linear programming problem, aiming at minimizing the operational costs of the network while guaranteeing operational constraints. Two new linearizations for branch current and nodal voltage magnitudes are introduced. The proposed branch current magnitude linearization provides a discretization of the Euclidean norm through a set of intersecting planes, while the bus voltage magnitude approximation uses a linear combination of the L1 and the L norm. The proposed approach is compared to a nonlinear power flow for an unbalanced distribution system with fixed power injections. The obtained results showed errors of less than 4% for currents and 0.005% for voltages, demonstrating that satisfactory accuracy may be obtained using the proposed linearizations.

Coherence of preferences, and the measurement of its violation, has been a long-standing issue in decision analysis. This paper continues the inquiry into coherence conditions for pairwise comparisons following a distance-based approach, in which the deviations from coherence conditions are measured on a continuous scale. Firstly, we consider eight coherence conditions already introduced in the literature and provide a complete study on their inclusion relations. Then, we consider four of these conditions and introduce optimization problems to quantify the extent of their violation.

This paper proposes a distributed control framework to optimize the offset for a path in a traffic network with arbitrary topology. Each intersection along the target path applies the model predictive control to optimize their own phase sequence and green splits with the objective of minimizing the sum of queue lengths. The first intersection on this path is regarded as the main intersection and responsible for optimizing the start green time and duration of the first phase on this path with a weighted objective according to the real-time traffic information, while the other intersections take the constraints of offset imposed by intersections ahead into consideration. The signal cycles of these intersections are fixed but allowed to be different. For computation efficiency, the nonlinear optimization problem is approximately reformulated as a mixed-integer linear programming problem. Numerical experiments on a calibrated network of Caohejing District in Shanghai indicate that our proposed method can effectively decrease delay time and waiting time especially at medium and high traffic loads. Sustainable reverse logistic network design for end-of-life use-case study

Due to the increased interests in environmental issues along with stringent environmental legislation and regulations, companies start taking a fresh look at the impact on their reverse logistic activties on the environment. This paper is an example of the recovery of valuable material that can be recycled/recovered or remanufactured at the end of product useful life by designing an effective reverse logistics network. In this study, a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model is proposed to determine a long-term strategy for end-of-life (EOL). The mathematical model not only takes into account the minimization of system operating costs, but also considered minimization of carbon emissions related to the transportation and processing of used products. Therefore, the objective in this model was to minimize the transportation and operating cost as well as minimizing environmental effects these activities. The results of this study show the trade-off between the costs and carbon emissions, and cost effectiveness for improving environmental performance, all of which have great practical implication on decision-making of network configurations a reverse logistics system. The proposed model is validated by examining a case study from wind turbine (WT) sector.

A two-stage sequential approach for scheduling with lot-sizing decisions in the context of plastic injection systems

This study addresses a planning problem for plastics injection systems, where final products are assembled of compatible plastic pieces. Additionally, the production of pieces requires the use of dedicated molds that are installed on compatible injection machines (leading to long setup times). Then, our Manufacturing Planning Problem determines the lot-size of each product in terms of the number of cycles for each piece-mold-machine combination and the scheduling of molds for each injection machine in a single planning period to maximize the total profit. We consider constraints for machines' available time and avoid mold overlapping on different machines. Moreover, we define a mixed-integer linear program for our problem, and we obtain high-quality solutions for medium-size instances using a commercial solver in minutes. Still, the convergence to optimal solutions for large instances is slower. In response, we propose a two-stage sequential approach that takes advantage of the mathematical formulation to obtain better solutions for large instances in short computational times.

The nth-plant scenario for blended feedstock conversion and preprocessing nationwide: Biorefineries and depots

The sustainability of the biofuel industry depends on the development of a mature conversion technology on a national level that can take advantage of the economies of scale: the nth-plant. Defining the future location and supply logistics of conversion plants is imperative to ultimately transform the nation's renewable biomass resources into cost-competitive, high-performance feedstock for production of biofuels and bioproducts. Since the US has put restrictions on production levels of conventional biofuels from edible resources, the nation needs to plan for the widespread accessibility and development of the cellulosic biofuel scenario. Conventional feedstock supply systems will be unable to handle cellulosic biomass nationwide, making it essential to expand the industry with an advanced feedstock supply system incorporating a distributed network of preprocessing depots and conversion plants, or biorefineries. Current studies are mostly limited to designing supply systems for specific regions of the country. We developed a national database with potential locations for depots and biorefineries to meet the nation's target demand of cellulosic biofuel. Blended feedstock with switchgrass and corn stover (harvested by either a two-or three-pass method) are considered in a mixed integer linear programming model to deliver on-spec biomass that considers both, a desired quantity and quality at the biorefinery. The model solves for a network of varying size depots that supply to biorefineries of 725,000 dry tons/year. A total delivered feedstock cost that is less than $79.07/dry tons (2016$) is evaluated for years 2022, 2030, and 2040. In 2022, 124 depots and 59 biorefineries could be supplied with 42.8 million dt of corn stover and switchgrass. In 2030 and 2040, the total accessible biomass could increase to 215% and 393% respectively when compared to 2022. Joint Radar-Communications Exploiting Optimized OFDM Waveforms

We propose novel Joint Radar-communication spectrum sharing strategies exploiting orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) waveforms that concurrently achieve the objectives of both radar and communication systems. An OFDM transmitter is considered that transmits dual-purpose OFDM subcarriers such that all the subcarriers are exploited for the primary radar function and further exclusively allocated to the secondary communication function serving multiple users. The waveform optimization is performed by employing mutual information (MI) as the optimization criterion for both radar and communication operations. For the purpose of radar performance optimization, we consider the MI between the frequency-dependent target response and the transmit OFDM waveforms. On the other hand, communication system performance is evaluated in terms of the MI between the frequency-dependent communication channels of communication users with the transmit OFDM subcarriers. These optimization objectives not only enable the transmit power allocation of the OFDM subcarriers, but also govern the subcarrier distribution among the communication users. Two resource optimization scenarios are considered, resulting in radar-centric and cooperative resource allocation strategies that exploit convex and mixed-integer linear programming optimization problems for power allocation and subcarrier distribution, respectively. We further present a chunk subcarrier allocation approach that applies to both optimization strategies to reduce the computational complexity with a trivial performance loss. Simulation results are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed strategies.
