Standardised modelling and optimisation of a system of interconnected energy hubs considering multiple energies-Electricity, gas, heating, and cooling

The system of interconnected energy hubs (EHs) is a key multi-carrier energy system (MES) model. It is difficult, however, to directly calculate the operational state of the model because of its highly dimensional nonlinear characteristics. To resolve the foregoing problem, a standardised modelling and optimisation method for the system of interconnected EH model is introduced in this paper. In this proposed method, one-dimensional and multi-dimensional piecewise linear approximation methods are adopted to simplify non-convex natural gas transmission functions, generator cost functions, and compressor function. Moreover, a multi-step linearisation method is applied to EHs. The whole system can accordingly be reformulated as a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) problem. In contrast to the traditional model, the formulated MILP model is effortlessly implemented in the optimisation of the MES with existing advanced optimisation techniques. Finally, the method is verified using a modified three-hub interconnected system. The test results show that the method can save more than 90% computational time with sufficient accuracy. The results also demonstrate that the unified dispatch exploits different energy resources, and the applied energy storage devices can reduce the operational cost from $319,840.267 to $316,382.685.

Unlocking the Potential of Battery Storage with the Dynamic Stacking of Multiple Applications

The ability of a battery energy storage system (BESS) to serve multiple applications makes it a promising technology to enable the sustainable energy transition. However, high investment costs are a considerable barrier to BESS deployment, and few profitable application scenarios exist at present. Here, we show that by tapping into multiple revenue streams using the dynamic stacking of applications, profitable operation is viable under current regulatory conditions. We develop a multi-use optimization framework which distinguishes between behind-the-meter and in-front-of-the-meter applications and considers how power capacity is allotted in addition to energy capacity allocation. The algorithm uses a rolling horizon optimization with an integrated degradation model and is fed with real-world data from a stationary lithium-ion battery in Germany. When combining peak shaving with frequency containment reserve, a net present value per Euro invested of 1.00 is achieved, and 1.24 with the addition of arbitrage trading on the intraday continuous market.

Dynamic supplier selection through optimal ranking under two-echelon system

Purpose With the increasing competition among the industries, they remain under pressure as how to select the best set of suppliers for the competitive edge. Often, it has been challenging to develop an effective set of suppliers due to varied and asymmetric mode of criteria. The purpose of this paper is to develop a responsive chain under original equipment manufacturer (OEM). Design/methodology/approach This study proposes a responsive chain under a two-echelon system (TES) of OEM, which needs to collaborate with a set of suppliers at each echelon through an integrated methodology of AHP and TOPSIS. According to the OEM's criteria, demands and suppliers' capacity vary with time, therefore they are not static for a longer period. Hence, supplier selection (SS) problem possesses dynamicity in real practice. For this, MILP is used for finding optimal order quantities based on the optimal ranking at each echelon in the multi-period scenario. Subsequently, sensitivity analysis (SA) is conducted through Taguchi method of parameter design (TMPD) to achieve an optimal ranking in the TES. Findings This study suggests optimal criteria's weight, percentage contribution, and flexibility for the suppliers and manufacturers involving through maximum demand strategy at each echelon of OEM. It also provides robust group of suppliers and manufacturers in the TES through optimal ranking and simultaneously in the order allocations. Furthermore, it restricts the number of suppliers and manufactures at each echelon through proposed methodology to obtain the solution in a very short running time. Originality/value To validate this model, a real data set for the case of chain conveyor company is used. This adopted methodology can suggest the organization that how the approach should be implemented.

A methodology of energy management for the co-phase traction power system with hybrid energy storage system (HESS) and photovoltaic (PV) panels integrated is proposed in this study. This energy management problem is developed as a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model with the target of lower operating costs, and the constraints of three-phase voltage unbalance are taken into account in particular. Several linearization approaches are applied for the formulation of MILP model and the scenario-based technique is also adopted for the uncertainty of PV generation. A real case analysis is conducted to validate the feasibility of proposed approach.

Together with the increasing population and prosperity levels of the growing countries, the economic and technological developments and modernized lifestyles of the end users have increased their electrical, heating and cooling energy demands extraordinarily. These services are generally provided to the end users independently, which leads to considerable reductions in the system efficiencies. For the purpose of providing a decrease in the demands of the end users and to transfer the energy carriers to the end users in an integrated and more efficient way, the concept of multi energy systems (MESs) has emerged. MESs could be developed at a district level, a city level and lastly at a country level. In this paper, a smart neighborhood MES model is proposed with the aim of achieving cost optimization by mixed integer linear programming (MILP) based formulation considering a time-of-use (TOU) tariff. In order to testify the effectiveness of the proposed optimization algorithm, two different case studies are conducted by taking into account flexible energy production capability of different energy carriers.

Assessing site integration into semi-continuous production, distribution and liquidity planning of supply chain networks

In order to strengthen competitiveness, the pool of available network sites in supply chains of processing industries with 24/7 operations should be adjusted permanently. However, an integration of additional sites is to be assessed thoroughly by the network managers as an exact coordination with existing partners must be ensured within multi-day planning horizons. On the one hand, continuous-time scheduling of network-wide operations exclusively allows for using time-based assessment criteria such as the minimum production time to be provided by the integrated sites. On the other hand, the assessment needs to be based on the calculation of network-wide liquidity, which must not fall below its previous value after the realization of an integration. A realistic consideration of financial planning needs to include both credits and financial investments not being based on given interest rates, but on cash flow series characterized by arbitrary compositions of payments and repayments occurring after any intervals of time periods. Thus, it is to be implemented by discrete-time modeling. As a result of merging both methods of assigning decisions to appropriate points on the time axis, a semi-continuous mixed-integer linear model is developed in the paper on hand. By interrelating three different shapes of this model, the minimum and maximum scope of an integration can be determined. The approach is validated for an illustrative example of a three-stage supply chain network, which is extended by two or three additional production sites. The computability of the problem on a high-performance cluster is evaluated in a scenario analysis including 50 test instances with randomly generated data.

Cumulative Prospect Theory (CPT) is a well known model introduced by Kahneman and Tversky in the context of decision making under risk to overcome some descriptive limitations of Expected Utility. In particular CPT makes it possible to account for the framing effect (outcomes are assessed positively or negatively relatively to a reference point) and the fact that people often exhibit different risk attitudes towards gains and losses. We study here computational aspects related to the implementation of CPT for decision making in combinatorial domains. More precisely, we consider the Knapsack Problem under Risk that consists of selecting the "best" subset of alternatives (investments, projects, candidates) subject to a budget constraint. The alternatives' outcomes may be positive or negative (gains or losses) and are uncertain due to the existence of several possible scenarios of known probability. Preferences over admissible subsets are based on the CPT model and we want to determine the CPT-optimal subset for a risk-averse Decision Maker (DM). The problem requires to optimize a non-linear function over a combinatorial domain. In the paper we introduce two distinct computational models based on mixed-integer linear programming to solve the problem. These models are implemented and tested on randomly generated instances of different sizes to show the practical efficiency of the proposed approach.

This work proposes a new direction in structural design: the synthesis of structures through the reuse of elements. Reusing structural elements reduces the environmental impacts of building structures because it avoids sourcing new material, it reduces waste and it requires little energy. Designing structures from reused elements is unlike conventional structural design because stock element availability is a design input. In other words, structures must be designed to fit given element characteristics, e.g. cross-sections and lengths. Stock constraints such as number of elements and element lengths, have a major influence on the optimal structure layout and form. In this new paradigm structural form follows availability. This work formulates new computational methods for the synthesis of reticular structures through reuse. Two scenarios are presented: a) reuse of reclaimed elements from a given stock, and b) design of a common stock which is used as a kit-of-parts to build diverse structures. Case studies are presented to demonstrate the potential of the proposed methods. It is shown that structures produced by these methods have a significantly lower environmental impact than minimum weight structures made of new elements.

The energy structure of China's power grids is under great changes. The participation of renewable energy and the construction of storable energy have brought new challenges to the operation of power grids. These make the scheduling of multiple power sources become very valuable to both system operators and researchers. Hence, this paper proposed an allscenario-feasible (ASF) optimization method for the coordinated scheduling of security constrained power grids with uncertain renewable and storable energy sources. The method of this paper has a good performance in the accommodation of renewable energy. It is able to guarantee the nonanticipativity of storable energy while coping with the random fluctuation of renewable energy. Besides, this method is based on the mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) and it will be explained on the typical power grid in this paper, which has wind power. thermal power and pumped storage plants (PSPs). The conclusions of this method are also applicable to other similar sources and the optimization results obtained from the case study demonstrate that our method is effective and of good performance in dealing with uncertainty of renewable energy.

Managing plug-in electric vehicles in eco-environmental operation optimization of local multi-energy systems

Local multi-energy systems (LMES) have been recently recognized as a promising alternative to centralized energy supply systems to meet local energy needs, since they promote efficient use of the available energy thanks to the coordination of heat and power technologies, storage, flexible demand and plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs). In this framework, PEVs represent loads to satisfy in the grid-to-vehicle (G2V) mode, while also serving as distributed storage when equipped with vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology, and can provide both economic and environmental benefits if properly managed. The contribution of this paper is to present a comprehensive multi-objective optimization model for the energy management of an LMES in the presence of PEVs, with the aim to combine maximization of LMES operator's profit with the minimization of CO2 emissions. The LMES supplies electricity, heat and cooling to a building cluster with PEVs, which can operate in both G2V and V2G modes. The problem consists of dispatching technologies in the LMES and finding the optimized charging/discharging strategies of PEVs in order to maximize the operator's profit while also reducing CO2 emissions, and it is addressed by formulating a multi-objective linear programming problem with the detailed modeling of interdependencies among energy carriers. The weighted sum method is used to represent the eco-environmental optimization problem, and it is solved by using CPLEX solver and considering a cluster of office buildings located in Italy as end-user of the LMES with PEVs owned by the offices' employees. Testing results demonstrate the effectiveness of the optimization framework to maximize the operator's profit while also reducing the CO2 emissions, thanks to the optimal coordination of the multiple energy carriers in the LMES and the effective management of the flexibility collected at both supply and demand sides.
