The block planning approach for continuous time-based dynamic lot sizing and scheduling

This paper calls for a change in paradigm in lot sizing and scheduling. Traditionally, a discrete time scale is chosen to model lot sizing and scheduling. As an alternative, the so-called block planning concept is proposed which is based on a continuous representation of time. A mixed-integer linear optimization model is presented that determines the size and the time phasing of the individual production lots in a single-stage production system under the objective of minimizing the makespan. The modelling approach presented here assumes the grouping of product variants into setup families and the production of product variants within a family in a pre-defined sequence. Numerical results demonstrate the practicability of this approach under experimental conditions which reflect typical settings from a leading company in the European beverage industry. © 2014, The Author(s).

The increase in wind generation in an electric power system also increases the uncertainty in supply and can affect how Generating Companies (GenCos) strategize in the electricity market thereby also affecting electricity prices. The study introduces a method for simulating the effects of different wind generation conditions on GenCo market strategy and on electricity market prices. A supply function equilibrium model is formulated for the electricity market, with a chance constraint added to accommodate the introduction of wind generation resources. The chance constraint used indicates the probability of the demand being satisfied by the supply, which translates to the probability of the amount of generation from wind resources. The study determines the effects of system confidence level, wind penetration level, wind probability parameters, and wind turbine parameters on the market clearing price, GenCo strategy, and GenCo market share. Although the increase in wind generation decreases the electricity market price, prices do not decrease proportionally with respect to increasing wind generation due to the changes in the strategies of GenCos.

The concept of demand response (DR) market, which recently introduced, is a comprehensive approach to schedule DR. DR market is a separate market in which DR is treated as a virtual resource to be exchanged between DR buyers and sellers. The major advantage of the DR market in comparison to other DR proposals is that it allocates benefits and payments across all participants, fairly. However, there are still obstacles to its integration into the existing power markets. This paper tries to address technical and economical issues towards integrating DR market into energy/reserve markets. For this purpose, a bilevel approach is proposed for clearing joint energy/reserve and DR markets whose upper-level problem determines system requirements for reserve using N-1 contingency criteria, and whose lower-level problem clears the DR market. The resulting nonlinear bilevel programming problem is translated into an equivalent single-level mixed-integer linear programming problem by replacing the lower-level problem by its Karush-Kuhn-Tucker optimality conditions and converting a number of nonlinearities to linear equivalents using some well-known techniques. Finally, a simple case study is used to verify the efficiency of the proposed approach.

The MRO industry faces substantial challenges with regard to the capacity planning of disassembly and reassembly work. This is due to the unknown workloads when regenerating complex investment goods and is caused, in particular, by the uncertain degree of disassembly and the complex challenges of reassembly. Forecasting techniques based on Bayesian networks are developed along with mathematical models which optimize capacity utilization, job order and the resulting costs. The approaches are tested and validated in conjunction with an MRO company with global operations. The results show possibilities for enhancing the planning processes and are found to be transferable on an international scale regardless of sociocultural and process differences. Game theoretical approaches are widely used for the analysis of oligopolistic electricity markets. Nash equilibrium is a solution concept of game theoretical approaches. Due to existence of mixed strategy equilibrium and large number of multiple players, finding Nash equilibrium for problems in electricity market is a difficult task. To resolve these difficulties, this paper proposes a simplified approach for finding extreme Nash equilibrium, based on payoff matrix approach and mixed integer linear programming (MILP). To illustrate the proposed approach, a practical case study of Cournot poly-matrix game is considered. Eliminating constraints are appended on the proposed approach to find a global optimal solution. Obtained results show the strength of proposed approach, in terms of simplicity and computational time.

Counting the number of active S-boxes is a common way to evaluate the security of symmetric key cryptographic schemes against differential attack. Based on mixed integer linear programming (MILP), Mouha et al. proposed a method to accomplish this task automatically for word-oriented symmetric-key ciphers with SPN structures. However, this method can not be applied directly to block ciphers of SPN structures with bitwise permutation diffusion layers (S-bP structures), due to its ignorance of the diffusion effect derived collaboratively by nonlinear substitution layers and bitwise permutation layers. In this paper we extend Mouha et al.'s method for S-bP structures by introducing new representations for exclusive-or (XOR) differences to describe bit/word level differences simultaneously and by taking the collaborative diffusion effect of S-boxes and bitwise permutations into account. Our method is applied to the block cipher PRESENT-80, an international standard for lightweight symmetric key cryptography, to automatically evaluate its security against differential attacks. We obtain lower bounds on the numbers of active S-boxes in the single-key model for full 31-round PRESENT-80 and in related-key model for round-reduced PRESENT-80 up to 12 rounds, and therefore automatically prove that the full-round PRESENT-80 is secure against single-key differential attack, and the cost of related-key differential attack on the full-round PRESENT-80 is close to that of an exhaustive search: the best related-key differential characteristic for full PRESENT-80 is upper bounded by 2(-72).

This paper presents a unified unit commitment and economic dispatch tool for the short-term scheduling of a power system under high renewable penetration. The proposed model uses variable time resolution and scheduling horizon extended up to 36 hours ahead and produces robust real-time decisions making the short-term operation of the power system almost insensitive to RES forecast errors. The proposed model is tested for a monthly period on the Greek interconnected power system using real load and wind power data for two different wind penetration levels. Simulation results show that the proposed methodology allows for the accommodation of large amounts of wind energy into the short-term scheduling of the power system at minimum cost.

The placement of detectors in mitigation systems is a difficult problem usually addressed in the industry via qualitative and semiquantative approaches. Simplifications are used to circumvent difficulties regarding problem size, parameter uncertainty, and lack of information concerning leak development. Given recent improvement of consequence modeling tools, the use of a stochastic mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) formulation (SP) was previously proposed to quantitatively approach this problem. This formulation minimizes the expected damage over a large set of gas leak scenarios while assuming perfect detectors. In reality gas detectors are prone to false positives and false negatives. Two solutions are usually implemented in the process industries. First, additional confirmation from several detectors (i.e., voting) is required before emergency actions are triggered in order to avoid false positives. Second, in order to avoid false negatives, the unavailability of the detectors is considered in the placement strategy. Unavailability corresponds to the probability that the detector will not be able to perform its intended function when required. In the first part of this dissertation, two problem formulations were developed and validated to address the issue of imperfect detectors: minimization of expected damage considering unavailability (SP-U) and minimization of the expected damage considering unavailability and voting (SP-UV). SP-U and SP-UV placement results were compared with those obtained assuming perfect detectors. Results demonstrate that explicit consideration of unavailability and voting effects alters the final detector placement. Quantitative risk can be significantly higher if we neglect these issues when solving for the optimal placement. Furthermore, SP-UV placement results were compared with those of four existing approaches for gas detector placement using three different performance metrics in accordance to the objectives of gas detection

We propose two systematic methods to describe the differential property of an S-box with linear inequalities based on logical condition modelling and computational geometry respectively. In one method, inequalities are generated according to some conditional differential properties of the S-box;in the other method, inequalities are extracted from the H-representation of the convex hull of all possible differential patterns of the S-box. For the second method, we develop a greedy algorithm for selecting a given number of inequalities from the convex hull. Using these inequalities combined with mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) technique, we propose an automatic method for evaluating the security of bit-oriented block ciphers against the (related-key) differential attack with several techniques for obtaining tighter security bounds, and a new tool for finding (related-key) differential characteristics automatically for bit-oriented block ciphers.

This paper presents an analytical mixed-integer linear programming model to improve reliability of distribution networks through the optimal allocation of automated switching devices. Optimal reliability is formulated as a multi-objective problem of minimizing customers' interruptions and the investment costs related to devices' acquisition, relocation and operation. In order to establish the optimal trade-off between these conflicting objectives the Goal programming approach is proposed. The presented model considers post-fault restoration constraints which limit load transfers and thereby the system reconfiguration capability. Restoration feasibility is ensured by a linear formulation of power flow equations as functions of geographical locations of automated switching devices in the feeder. Therefore, the model's solutions provide a more effective and economic application of automated switching devices, so that voltage and system capacity constraints are taken into account in selecting optimal locations of devices. The proposed methodology was validated using the IEEE 123-bus test feeder.
