Optimal blending management of biomass resources used for biochemical conversion

This research develops an optimization model to describe the tradeoff among blend components in the least-cost biomass blend, based on resource availability, quality requirements, and logistics cost for a biochemical conversion. A mixed-integer linear programming model is developed to determine the least-cost blend from a set of candidate feedstocks. A case study - based on a biorefinery located in western Kansas that uses three-pass corn stover, two-pass corn stover, switchgrass, miscanthus, and municipal solid waste fractions to meet biochemical conversion specifications and feedstock demand - shows that the delivered cost of an optimal blend that meets carbohydrate and ash specifications is 12.12% higher than the delivered cost of optimal blend that meets a carbohydrate specification only. The results indicate that a least-cost blend that meets both carbohydrate and ash specifications consists of miscanthus (48.2%) and switchgrass (29.4%) whereas the least-cost blend meeting carbohydrate specification only comprises three-pass corn stover (55.4%) and two-pass corn stover (20.4%). An optimal blend uses a low-cost municipal solid waste fraction in all cases, implying that blending could be a potential strategy to reduce delivered feedstock cost. Published 2018. An Accelerated-Decomposition Approach for Security-Constrained Unit Commitment With Corrective Network Reconfiguration

Security-constrained unit commitment (SCUC) model is used for power system day-ahead scheduling. However, current SCUC model uses a static network to deliver power and meet demand optimally. A dynamic network can provide a lower optimal cost and alleviate network congestion. However, due to the computational complexity and the lack of effective algorithms, network reconfiguration has not been included in the SCUC model yet. This paper presents a novel approach to handle the computational complexity in security-constrained unit commitment (SCUC) with corrective network reconfiguration (CNR) while considering the scalability through accelerated-decomposition approach with fast screening non-critical sub-problems of SCUC-CNR. The proposed approach provides substantial computational benefits and is also applicable to SCUC. Simulation results on the IEEE 24-bus system show that the proposed methods are substantially faster without the loss in solution quality while the scalability benefits are demonstrated using larger cases: the IEEE 73-bus system, IEEE 118-bus system and Polish system.

Robust Joint Expansion Planning of Electrical Distribution Systems and EV Charging Stations

Electrical distribution systems (EDSs) should be prepared to cope with demand growth in order to provide a quality service. The future increase in electric vehicles (EVs) represents a challenge for the planning of the EDS due to the corresponding increase in the load. Therefore, methods to support the planning of the EDS, considering the uncertainties of conventional loads and EV demand, should be developed. This paper proposes a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model to solve the robust multistage joint expansion planning of EDSs and the allocation of EV charging stations (EVCSs). Chance constraints are used in the proposed robust formulation to deal with load uncertainties, guaranteeing the fulfillment of the substation capacity within a specified confidence level. The expansion planning method considers the construction/reinforcement of substations, EVCSs, and circuits, as well as the allocation of distributed generation units and capacitor banks along the different stages in which the planning horizon is divided. The proposed MILP model guarantees optimality by applying classical optimization techniques. The effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method is verified via two distribution systems with 18 and 54 nodes. Additionally, Monte Carlo simulations are carried out, aiming to verify the compliance of the proposed chance constraint.

Observability and controllability of piecewise affine and hybrid systems

In this paper, me prove, in a constructive way, the equivalence between piecewise affine systems and a broad class of hybrid systems described by interacting linear dynamics, automata, and propositional logic. By focusing our investigation on the former class, we show through counterexamples that observability and controllability properties cannot be easily deduced from those of the component linear subsystems. Instead, rye propose practical numerical tests based on mixed-integer linear programming.

Resource efficient logical topology design for IP-over-WDM backbone networks

With the advancements in WDM technology to provide huge capacity and the Internet Protocol playing a dominant role in networking technology, IP-over-WDM network becomes a potential candidate for next generation networks. This article studies the problem of designing logical topologies for IP-over-WDM backbone networks. One important feature of IP-over-WDM networks is the reconfigurability when traffic demands change over time. If the network resource is not used efficiently, the reconfiguration can cause network disruption because no new wavelength channels (lightpaths) can be added before deleting some working channels. Moreover, more than one logical topology for different services or from different ISPs can be simultaneously implemented in an existing WDM network. Hence using resources efficiently is an important issue while designing logical topologies. In this article, we present a new approach to design logical topologies so that the network resource is used most efficiently while the network performance is guaranteed. The problem is formulated as an MILP problem. Since this MILP problem is NP-hard and can be applied for small networks only, a heuristic algorithm based on iterative optimization is proposed to solve the problem for real-size networks. Multi-Objective Reconfiguration of Radial Distribution Systems Using Reliability Indices

This paper deals with the distribution network reconfiguration problem in a multi-objective scope, aiming to determine the optimal radial configuration by means of minimizing the active power losses and a set of commonly used reliability indices formulated with reference to the number of customers. The indices are developed in a way consistent with a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) approach. A key contribution of the paper is the efficient implementation of the epsilon-constraint method using lexicographic optimization in order to solve the multi-objective optimization problem. After the Pareto efficient solution set is generated, the resulting configurations are evaluated using a backward/forward sweep load-flow algorithm to verify that the solutions obtained are both non-dominated and feasible. Since the epsilon-constraint method generates the Pareto front but does not incorporate decision maker (DM) preferences, a multi-attribute decision making procedure, namely, the technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) method, is used in order to rank the obtained solutions according to the DM preferences, facilitating the final selection. The applicability of the proposed method is assessed on a classical test system and on a practical distribution system.

Integrating facility layout design and aisle structure in manufacturing systems: Formulation and exact solution

In manufacturing systems, aisles are paths which are used for the movement of workers, transportation devices, and materials. The aisle structure contributes to layout efficiency by reducing material handling costs, mean flow time and the amount of space needed, and providing smooth transportation. Therefore, to achieve a good layout, it is essential to determine the position of facilities such as machines and workstations, but also the corresponding aisle structure. In this article, we analyze the requirements for the design of an efficient aisle structure and propose a formulation of the corresponding layout problem as a mixed-integer linear programming model. This formulation allows the layout of unequal-area facilities and the aisle structure to be simultaneously optimized. In optimizing the aisle structure, issues such as optimizing the number, position, and width of the aisles, the position of the entrance and exit doors, and how to connect them to the aisles are studied. By optimizing the number and width of the aisles, the proposed approach contributes towards optimizing transportation traffic. A branch-and-cut algorithm, improved by adding optimality cuts and efficient branching and node strategies, is used to solve the problem. Tackling fuel poverty and decarbonisation in a distributed heating system through a three-layer whole system approach

Residential heating displays huge decarbonisation potential towards Net -Zero. The complexity of heating system and socio-economic system appeals for a systematic design to avoid exacerbating fuel poverty. This study develops a three -layer heat -for -all model which integrates building stocks analysis, distributed heating system optimisation, economic and environmental impacts simulation to tackle heating decarbonisation and fuel poverty simultaneously. This whole system model is a powerful decision support tool that can help conceive heating decarbonisation strategies for wider regions and countries. More than 400,000 scenarios are created, considering the effects of future policy schemes (No Grant, Business as Usual, Proposed), minimum emission reduction target, carbon intensity of grid, future natural gas, and electricity prices. Results show that optimised heating system decarbonisation plan heavily relies on future energy prices. In the case study, only air source heat pumps are chosen when electricity price is lower than 3 times gas price. Secondly, investment in heating system could stimulate the greenhouse gas emission of whole supply chain, hedging the emission reduction achieved in heating system. This further reveals that life cycle thinking is imperative in GHG emission mitigation. Thirdly, electricity decarbonisation plays a vital role in achieving whole system emission reduction. The grid carbon intensity reduction makes substantial contribution to the emission reduction of heating system and industry system. In tackling fuel poverty, it's worth noticing that the fuel poverty is aggravated with more grant support under certain scenarios, since current policy schemes focus on capital investment in heating system but overlook the increased energy bills. It appeals for a more comprehensive policy design considering all stakeholders.

A fast method for the unit scheduling problem with significant renewable power generation

Optimal operation of power systems with high integration of renewable power sources has become difficult as a consequence of the random nature of some sources like wind energy and photovoltaic energy. Nowadays, this problem is solved using Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS) approach, which allows considering important statistical characteristics of wind and solar power production such as the correlation between consecutive observations, the diurnal profile of the forecasted power production, and the forecasting error. However, MCS method requires the analysis of a representative amount of trials, which is an intensive calculation task that increases considerably with the number of scenarios considered. In this paper, a model to the scheduling of power systems with significant renewable powergeneration based on scenario generation/reduction method, which establishes a proportional relationship between the number of scenarios and the computational time required to analyse them, is proposed. The methodology takes information from the analysis of each scenario separately to determine the probabilistic behaviour of each generator at each hour in the scheduling problem. Then, considering a determined significance level, the units to be committed are selected and the load dispatch is determined. The proposed technique was illustrated through a case study and the comparison with stochastic programming approach was carried out, concluding that the proposed methodology can provide an acceptable solution in a reduced computational time.
