The maritime industry is preparing for a future where human presence is no longer required on board of ships. This will revolutionize maritime operations and consequentially introduce unprecedented challenges to the corresponding logistics. This paper provides a first piece of reflection on mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) problems regarding remote and autonomous operations in the maritime industry. A non-standard facility location problem (FLP) is constructed to determine the optimal locations for a number of facilities serving as refueling stations, and to obtain the optimal heterogeneous vessel fleet size & mix to satisfy the inspection demand of North-Sea assets over a multi-period timeframe. The model combines distinctive vessel routing behavior to assess a heterogeneous fleet of both remotely operated vessels and traditional vessels in the maritime survey industry. The simulation results are reported for a real case study commissioned by geo-data company Fugro. The final results of the model suggest that the effective establishment of facility locations and corresponding fleet allocation can reduce the operational costs and environmental footprint of the survey operations in the North-Sea.

In this paper, we study the Split Delivery Capacitated Profitable Tour Problem (SDCPTP) that extends the profitable tour problem by a fleet of vehicles and the possibility of split deliveries. In the SDCPTP, the objective is to select a subset of requests and find for each vehicle a feasible tour such that the prize collected by fulfilling the selected requests net of the cost of delivery is maximized. We propose three mixed-integer linear programming formulations for modeling the SDCPTP. These formulations differ primarily in their treatment of the subtour elimination constraints within the branch-and-cut algorithm. The first of these formulations is applicable to the more general asymmetric case, whereas the other two are computationally more efficient in presence of symmetric variants of the problem. Using benchmark instances from the literature, we provide a detailed numerical study that demonstrates the effectiveness of a state-of-the-art solver in tackling these models. For managerial insights, we perform a sensitivity analysis on the SDCPTP with respect to the number of vehicles and requests as well as the benefits of enabling split delivery.

Evaluation for Maximum Allowable Capacity of Renewable Energy Source Considering AC System Strength Measures

In this paper, a method to calculate the maximum allowable capacity (MAC) of renewable energy sources (RESs) in terms of AC system strength is presented;the equivalent short-circuit ratio (ESCR) and the newly proposed reactive power considered equivalent short-circuit ratio (QESCR) are considered. Unlike conventional measures, the reactive power afforded by RESs is considered when calculating the QESCR;the MAC of RESs increases because their reactive power outputs stabilize transmission networks. Based on the AC strength measures, an optimization problem to evaluate the MAC of RESs and determine their optimal locations is developed. The optimization problem is formulated in mixed-integer linear programming (MILP). To validate the effectiveness of the proposed method, it is applied to two test systems: the IEEE RTS-79 test system and a real-world Korean transmission network. The proposed method allows facile calculation of the MAC of RESs, which ensures that the transmission network remains stable.

Charging station optimization for balanced electric car sharing

This work focuses on finding optimal locations for charging stations for one-way electric car sharing programs. The relocation of vehicles by a service staff is generally required in vehicle sharing programs in order to correct imbalances in the network. We seek to limit the need for vehicle relocation by strategically locating charging stations given estimates of traffic flow. A mixed-integer linear programming formulation is presented with a large number of potential charging station locations. A column generation approach is used which finds an optimal set of locations for the continuous relaxation of our problem. Results of a numerical experiment using real traffic and geographic information system location data show that our formulation significantly increases the balanced flow across the network, while our column generation technique was found to produce a superior solution in much shorter computation time compared to solving the original formulation with all possible station locations. Real-time order picking planning framework for warehouses and distribution centres

This paper proposes a dynamic-order picking (DOP) framework where batches and picker routes are continuously modified in response to urgent orders arrival and disruption events. In the proposed framework, we consider conflicts between pickers in narrow aisles to ensure a smooth replanning function. For this purpose, we first formulate a static joint-order batching and sequencing model (J-OBS) that takes into account congestion time. Then, we propose a replanning model (D-J-OBS) that utilises real-time input from multiple information systems. As a solution approach and due to the NP-hardness of the problem, we use a tabu search algorithm to solve practical sizes of the static and the dynamic problems. The results indicate that the DOP framework generates significant tardiness savings compared to online-order picking, especially for systems with high degree of dynamism.

The Two Echelon Open Vehicle Routing Problem: Optimization of Crowdshipping Based Parcel Delivery

Crowdshipping is a revolutionary concept of the sharing economy. In this study, two carriers are used to perform the following expedition: the truck starts from the depot to complete part of the deliveries, shares part of the load with the crowdshipper at the relay point, and the private driver selected as the crowdshipper continues from that point onward. This study proposes the two-echelon open vehicle routing problem with crowdshipping (2EOVRP-CS) and formulates a mathematical model to determine the crowdshipper, parcel relay location, truck route, and crowdsource route. A tangible nested genetic algorithm (NGA) is proposed, and its efficiency is demonstrated by comparison with CPLEX and genetic algorithm (GA). A real case study is investigated in Xi'an city to test the applicability of the proposed model. The results show that using crowdshipping instead of truck delivery alone can save approximately 14% of the total cost and 26% of truck vehicle miles traveled (VMT). Moreover, several sensitivity analyses are performed. The results show that crowdshipping is sensitive to the detour limit and the time value of carriers. For the detour limit, after the acceptable detour distance increases by 8%, the total cost can be reduced by up to 5.94%.

Optimal scheduling of battery charging-swapping systems for distribution network resilience enhancement

When offshore-island renewable distribution systems (OIRDSs) encounter multiple failures in case of extreme weather, the battery charging-swapping system (BCSS) is a promising solution to reduce the power outage loss and enhance resilience of OIRDSs. However, extreme weather (such as heavy rain) may affect the logistic speed, resulting in a non-integer-hour battery schedule time among stations. Although rounding the time as integer hours could match the scheduling step size, large errors would be caused. To solve the problem, a novel OIRDS resilience enhancement strategy is proposed. First, the impacts of the rainfall, solar radiation, and wind speed on the renewable generation and battery transfer time are analyzed. On this basis, a dual unit commitment method is presented to coordinate the scheduling step and non-integer-hour battery transfer time. Moreover, an optimal OIRDS resilience enhancement model integrating decisions of the battery schedule and network reconfiguration is presented based on a 1-hour scheduling step. This model is converted into a mixed -integer linear programming (MILP) problem and solved efficiently. Extensions for Benders cuts and new valid inequalities for solving the European day-ahead electricity market clearing problem efficiently

We study the day-ahead electricity market clearing problem under the prevailing market design in the European electricity markets. We revisit the Benders decomposition algorithm that has been used to solve this problem. We develop new valid inequalities that substantially improve the performance of the algorithm. We generate instances that mimic the characteristics of past bids of the Turkish day-ahead electricity market and conduct experiments. We use two leading mixed-integer programming solvers, IBM ILOG Cplex and Gurobi, in order to assess the impact of employed solver on the algorithm performance. We compare the performances of our algorithm, the primal-dual algorithm, and the Benders decomposition algorithm using the existing cuts from the literature. The extensive experiments we conduct demonstrate that the price-based cuts we develop improve the performance of the Benders decomposition algorithm and outperform the primal-dual algorithm. MILP Optimized Management of Domestic PV-Battery Using Two Days-Ahead Forecasts

This paper proposes an Energy Management System (EMS) for domestic PV-battery applications with the aim of reducing the absolute net energy exchange with the utility grid by utilizing the two days-ahead energy forecasts in the optimization process. A mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) exploits two days-ahead energy demand and PV generation forecasts to schedule the day-ahead battery energy exchange with both the utility grid and the PV generator. The proposed scheme is tested using the real data of the Active Office Building (AOB) located in Swansea University, UK. Performance comparisons with state-of-the-art and the commercial EMS currently running at the AOB reveal that the proposed EMS increases the self-consumption of PV energy and at the same time reduces the total energy cost. The absolute net energy exchange with the grid and the total operating costs are reduced by 121% and 54% compared to the state-of-the-art and 194% and 8% when compared to the commercial EMS over a six-month period. Furthermore, the results show that the proposed method can reduce the energy bill by up to 46% for the same period compared to the state-of-the-art. The paper also investigates the effect of using different objective functions on the performance of the EMS and shows that the proposed EMS operate more efficiently when it is compared with another cost function that directly promotes reducing the absolute net energy exchange.

Cross-regional integrated transmission of wind power and pumped-storage hydropower considering the peak shaving demands of multiple power grids

Due to the inherent uncertainty and intermittence of wind power, and the geographical mismatch between the wind power bases and the load demand, the problem of wind curtailment is becoming increasingly serious in China. To promote the consumption of wind power, this paper studies the shortterm operation of a wind farm-pumped storage hydropower plant (WF-PSHP) hybrid system which transmits power to multiple cross-regional power grids through ultra-high-voltage (UHV) transmission lines. In this study, the forecasted error distribution of wind power is fitted using kernel density estimation. An optimization model that considers the peak shaving demands of receiving-end power grids (REPGs) is then established to determine the daily operation of the WF-PSHP system. The hydraulic constraints of the PSHP and individual unit operation constraints are also taken into account to make the model more accurate. To improve the solving efficiency, the original stochastic model is transformed into a deterministic mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) problem through several deterministic conversion and linearization techniques. The real-world case studies demonstrate that the integrated transmission of the WF and PSHP can reduce the peak-valley difference of the REPGs while absorbing large-scale wind power on different typical days in summer and winter.(c) 2021 Elsevier Ltd.
