Increased integration of renewable energy sources, which are typically inverter-based, has heightened concerns about voltage stability in power systems. This paper presents an optimization strategy for the operating points of reactive power compensation equipment, specifically Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS) and fixed shunt capacitors, to enhance voltage stability. The proposed method employs QV sensitivity to linearize the relationship between reactive power and voltage, formulating the optimization problem as a mixed integer Quadratic programming (MIQP) problem. By leveraging the unique characteristics of FACTS and shunt devices, the method aims to minimize voltage deviations and reactive power imbalance without extensive power flow calculations. Simulation results on the IEEE 39-bus system demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed strategy in maintaining voltage stability and optimizing the reactive power response under various loading conditions. © 2024 IEEE.

The optimization method for flexible distribution network operation based on multi-terminal SOP is essentially a non-convex nonlinear programming problem. The main purpose of transforming non-convex nonlinear programming problems into easily solvable mixed integer second order cone programming (MISOCP) models is to improve global optimization assurance, improve solving efficiency, enhance numerical stability, simplify problem complexity, and make problem solving more widely applicable. Transforming the problem into a MISOCP model can improve global optimization assurance, as MISOCP problems have the property of global optimal solutions. linearizing and transforming the problem into a MISOCP model can simplify the complex constraints and nonlinear parts of the problem, reduce the complexity of modeling and solving, and make the problem easier to understand and handle. The mixed integer second-order cone programming problem can be solved using specialized optimization solvers, which have been studied and optimized for a long time and can effectively handle large-scale problems. © 2024 IEEE.

The global rise in Electric Vehicle (EV) adoption to reduce the carbon footprint has intensified the need for efficient energy management strategies in grid-connected EV charging stations. This paper presents an optimal energy management approach using mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) to maximize the profit for the charging station owners (CSOs), a key factor in driving further investment in the charging infrastructure and accelerating widespread adoption of EVs. By leveraging MILP, the proposed framework enables charging station operators to optimize EV charging schedules, accounting for dynamic time-of-use (TOU) electricity rates, PV generation variability, and fluctuating EV demand. The objective is to maximize profit while ensuring sustainable and cost-effective operation. Simulation results highlight the effectiveness of this approach in improving profitability and reducing operational costs. The study underscores the potential of MILP to enhance the efficiency and sustainability of EV charging infrastructure, accelerating the shift towards smart and resilient urban mobility solutions. © 2024 IEEE.

A Bi-objective optimization model for the last train timetabling problem

In cities where the urban rail transit (URT) systems do not provide 24-h services, passengers may not be able to reach their destinations if the last train services have closed by the time they arrive at the transfer stations. This paper aims to seek a well-coordinated last train timetable that can transport as many passengers as possible to their destinations (referred to as reachable passengers) and also transport those passengers who cannot reach their destinations (referred to as unreachable passengers) to the stations as close as possible to their destinations. A bi-objective mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model is developed to maximize the number of reachable passengers and minimize the total remaining travel distance of all passengers. The augmented epsilon-constraint method is applied to generate all Pareto optimal solutions of the biobjective MILP model. Numerical experiments were implemented in the Chengdu URT network. Results indicate that compared to the current-in-use timetable, the optimized timetable by our methods significantly increased the number of reachable passengers and meanwhile reduced the average remaining travel distance of unreachable passengers. In addition, we discussed two possible strategies to improve passengers' destination reachability, which are encouraging passengers to arrive early at their origin stations, and optimizing the timetable of last trains and non-last trains at the same time.

Derivation and generation of path-based valid inequalities for transmission expansion planning

This paper seeks to solve the long-term transmission expansion planning problem in power systems more effectively by reducing the solution search space and the computational effort. The proposed methodology finds and adds cutting planes based on structural insights about bus angle differences along paths. Two lemmas and a theorem are proposed which formally establish the validity of these cutting planes onto the underlying mathematical formulations. These path-based bus angle difference constraints, which tighten the relaxed feasible region, are used in combination with branch-and-bound to find lower bounds on the optimal investment of the transmission expansion planning problem. This work also creates an algorithm that automates the process of finding and applying the most effective valid inequalities, resulting in significantly reduced testing and computational time. The algorithm is implemented in Python, using Gurobi to add constraints and solve the exact DCOPF-based transmission expansion problem. This paper uses two different-sized systems to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed framework: the GOC 500-bus system and a modified Polish 2383-bus system.

The real-time optimal load dispatch (OLD) problem in a hydropower plant aims to determine the generation level of each generating unit (GU) in the most efficient way and a few seconds. Due to the hydro production function (HPF), it is a nonlinear programming (NLP) problem that can be efficiently handled via mixed-integer linear programming (MILP). However, solving the real-time OLD of the Santo Antonio Hydro Plant (SAHP) is particularly challenging, both in terms of modeling and execution time, due to the following issues: (1) there are 50 GUs with different hydraulic efficiency curves;(2) the gross head is dependent of the GU dam location;and (3) significant (and potentially dangerous) losses in the trash racks produced by the Madeira River debris. In this scenario, this paper presents a recommendation system for the real-time OLD of the SAHP based on MILP. In real-time, the system employs gross head and trash rack losses measures to model and solve a MILP problem that obtains the GUs power level to be used by the hydro plant operator. We compare the system solution with the strategy currently used by the plant operator and with the equal dispatch between the identical GUs. The results emphasize the improvement in plant productivity. In the 2019 year, for example, the OLD real-time recommendation system presents a 9852.63 MWh increasing in power energy generation.

Hybrid matheuristics for the multi-capacitated clustering problem

The capacitated clustering problem is a well-known and largely studied combinatorial optimization problem with several industrial applications. Although a great attention has been paid to this problem in the literature, the deeming of the problem with clusters centers with multiple types and a unique capacity per type is quite limited. We introduce a novel variant of capacitated clustering problems named multi-capacitated clustering problem (MCCP), a NP-hard optimization problem in which there are clients with different types and units of services to offer that must be grouped into given centers that demand with limited capacity per type the services. It is taken into account the distance between each one of these clients and the potential clusters to which they can be allocated, aiming to minimize the sum of such distances. It is presented an integer programming model for this problem, which it is shown to have limited application solving large-sized instances. As solution procedures, we present the following algorithms. We propose a greedy heuristic to generate a tentative feasible solution within a negligible computational effort. We adapt a size-reduction (SR) matheuristic to solve the problem under study. Furthermore, we introduce an innovative matheuristic that hybridizes the constructive phase of the well-known GRASP metaheuristic with the SR algorithm. Also, we develop a variable fixing (VF) heuristic. Finally, we propose a hybrid matheuristic based on the SR and VF algorithms. Computational results over a set of 100 randomly generated test instances point out the quality of the solutions found by the proposed algorithms. Besides, the results are statistically tested, and thus, our proposals are recommended to solve the problem under study.

A decision-support model for dock and transport management after inbound logistics disruptions in the automotive sector

One of the major disruptions in automotive supply chain is related to the on-time arrival of components from suppliers to assembly plants. In this paper, we develop an operative decision-support model to avoid the ripple effect of these disruptions on production scheduling. In particular, based on strategies for truck-dock re-assignment and transport mode selection, the model is applied to a case study at Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA). Moreover, the paper elaborates on the resilience and robustness of the supply chain in dealing with vulnerabilities in different phases of decision-making. The model allows supply chain managers to efficiently organise the transport modes of delayed orders, the in-plant material handling equipment, the arrival of trucks in the parking lot, and the use of inbound docks. Optimal sub-contractor selection and allocation in a multiple construction project: Project portfolio planning in practice

Subcontracting is known as a global concern in construction industry. Appropriate selection of sub-contractors (SCs) significantly affects scheduling. However, review of the recent literature suggests that the issues of selecting SC and scheduling construction projects are investigated separately. Moreover, general contractors (GCs) usually conduct a number of projects simultaneously, while the literature demonstrates that subcontracting is often studied when the GC is conducting only one project. In order to fill these gaps, the current research study is conducted to investigate the subjects of subcontracting and scheduling construction projects when more than one project must be done at the same time. To this aim, a mixed-integer linear programming model is developed to minimize the cost of the project in two different conditions. In the first condition, the deadline can be postponed by paying a penalty. In contrast, in the second condition, the deadline cannot be postponed under no circumstances. Then, the proposed model is solved by applying the general algebraic modelling system. The findings demonstrate that the proposed model is reliable to provide an optimized schedule when several projects must be conducted at the same time.

Conserving workforce while temporarily rebalancing assembly lines under demand disruption

In stable circumstances, assembly lines have workers with different capabilities assigned to stations. They perform a set of specialised tasks multiple times daily. Under a situation of high demand disruption (e.g. the COVID-19 pandemic), the overproduction rate would lead inventory levels to soar. An approach to cope with these demand drops and ongoing workforce costs is to dismiss employees and rebalance the line. Nevertheless, this implies social and economic costs related to rehiring and training. Alternatively, agreements can be made to reduce workload with a proportional wage deduction. These decisions are particularly challenging in heterogeneous workforces. We propose a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model to address the Assembly Line Worker Assignment and Rebalancing Problem (ALWARP). Our model aims at preserving jobs while minimising labour costs. We consider scenarios with falling demands and impose regularity metrics on workload reductions. Computational tests on benchmark datasets show that our strategy can distribute social costs among workers, with only slightly higher cumulative labour hours, while avoiding inconveniences associated with future renovations. A real-world case study of a truck cabin assembly line is investigated: the model can easily incorporate many realistic features and decide which workers should have their workload reduced and at which rate.
