Energy management of space-heating systems and grid-connected batteries in smart homes

Several approaches of energy management systems reduce power consumption of heating demand and electricity storage based on static or dynamic tariffs. However, such methodologies impose uncertainties due to forecasting errors of energy consumption and generation, while evaluating electricity prices. Alternatively, this paper proposes a novel methodology of residential energy management to decrease electricity consumption of space-heating units and grid-connected batteries without incorporating price signals, while maintaining their characteristic operation. The proposed algorithm of energy management develops seasonal calculations of heating load and storage power to achieve energy savings in smart homes based on mixed-integer linear programming, considering photovoltaic electric generation. Power consumption of heating systems is estimated considering heat losses of conduction and ventilation through buildings in addition to other important parameters such as outdoor and indoor temperatures. Charging and discharging patterns of grid-connected batteries are modelled consistent with residential loads. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm of energy management is able to reduce energy consumption of space-heating loads by 15%, mitigating their environmental impact while keeping their functioning usage. Moreover, the algorithm decreases charging demand of grid-connected batteries by 13%, maintaining their state-of-charge levels between 10 and 90%.

Sectionalizing switches (SSs) and tie lines play essential roles in reducing the duration of customer interruptions in electricity distribution networks. The effectiveness of such assets is strongly influenced by their placement in the grid. Operation of SSs and tie lines is also inherently interdependent. Due to the structural complexities regarding the mathematical modeling of such dependencies, optimization of the planning and operation of switches and tie lines has typically required either leveraging heuristic and metaheuristic approaches or oversimplifying the network topology. To tackle such issues, this paper presents a computationally-efficient model for reliability-oriented concurrent switch and tie line placement in distribution networks with complex topologies. The proposed model can be applied to grids with several tie lines and laterals per feeder, and yields the optimal location of tie lines, type of tie switches, namely manual or remote-controlled, and the location and type of SSs. Being cast as a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) problem, the model can be efficiently solved with guaranteed convergence to global optimality using off-the-shelf optimization software. The efficiency and scalability of the proposed model are demonstrated through implementation on five networks and the outcomes are thoroughly discussed.

This article proposes a multi-objective mixed-integer linear programming model to assist event managers in obtaining and evaluating non-dominated solutions to the problem of selecting a daily lineup of shows and activities for a festival - be it cultural, sports, ceremonial or any other kind. The model, which is especially adequate for designing festivals with public funding, has five objectives, relating to financial, logistical and how renowned the festival artists or acts are. It includes support for multiple days, multiple stages and different types of shows, all subject to constraints imposed by the intrinsic nature of the festival itself. The output of the model is a set of optimized daily lineups for the activities that constitute the festival, each corresponding to a particular compromise between the five objectives. The approach is demonstrated with a case study for a 5-day festival, for which non-dominated solutions are derived, presented and discussed. Results show that the model can provide a good variety of solutions while ensuring the persistence of the more desirable shows. The model is a novel decision support tool to assist in designing festival lineups that provide optimal audience experience, a key factor in attracting spectators, tourists and increasing comeback value.

An operational scheduling framework for Electric Vehicle Battery Swapping Station under demand

This paper proposes a novel mathematical optimization model aimed at incorporating demand response strategies in the operational scheduling problem of Electric Vehicle (EV) Battery Swapping Stations (BSS). The primary goal of the model is to minimize the operational costs while accounting for intricacies arising from diverse charging modes, variations in battery capacities, charger availability, different states of charges (SOC) of incoming discharged batteries, time -of -use power prices, power constraints and fluctuating customer demand patterns. Furthermore, the model takes into consideration the effect of faster charging modes on battery health to ensure a sustainable operation. The proposed model is further extended to incorporate the effect of swapping demand uncertainty on the operational decision -making of the BSS, and a two -stage stochastic optimization model with a recourse approach is proposed. The proposed stochastic optimization model is tested with relevant case studies, and the results demonstrate the efficacy of the model in providing a risk -neutral solution by determining the optimal demand satisfaction pattern and calculating the number of additional batteries needed to minimize demand shortfalls across all scenarios. The proposed scheduling framework holds the promise of improving both the efficiency of the BSS operations and customer satisfaction, paving the way for accelerated EV adoption.

Information Gap Decision-Making Theory-Based Medium- and Long-Term Optimal Dispatching of Hydropower-Dominated Power Grids in a Market Environment

In the high-proportion hydropower market, the fairness of the execution of traded electricity and clean energy consumption are two issues that need to be considered in medium- and long-term dispatching. Aiming at the fairness of medium- and long-term optimal dispatching of hydropower-dominated grids and the problem of water abandonment in the power market environment, this paper proposes a medium- and long-term optimal dispatching method for hydropower-dominated grids based on the information gap decision-making theory (IGDT). Firstly, IGDT is used to establish a two-layer model of medium- and long-term optimal dispatching that considers runoff uncertainty, in which the lower layer solves the maximum value of the maximum difference in the contract power completion rate of the power stations, and the upper layer solves the maximum fluctuation range of the interval inflow. Then, a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP)-based single-layer optimization model is obtained through a variety of linearization techniques, and the model is solved via the CPLEX solver (version 12.10.0). The medium- and long-term optimal dispatching of 10 thermal power stations and 22 hydropower stations in Yunnan Power Grid, China, is taken as an example to verify the proposed model. The results show that the maximum difference in the contracted electricity completion rate of each power station is 0.412, and the amount of abandoned hydropower is reduced by 81.33% compared to when the abandoned water penalty function is not considered. It is proved that the proposed model can effectively alleviate the problems of excessive power generation, insufficient power generation and large-scale hydropower abandonment, which are of great significance for realizing the fair dispatching of hydropower-dominated power grids and promoting clean energy consumption in the market environment.

Modeling of a Biomass-Based Energy Production Case Study Using Flexible Inputs with the P-Graph Framework

In this work, a modeling technique utilizing the P-Graph framework was used for a case study involving biomass-based local energy production. In recent years, distributed energy systems gained attention. These systems aim to satisfy energy supply demands, support the local economy, decrease transportation needs and dependence on imports, and, in general, obtain a more sustainable energy production process. Designing such systems is a challenge, for which novel optimization approaches were developed to help decision making. Previous work used the P-Graph framework to optimize energy production in a small rural area, involving manure, intercrops, grass, and corn silage as inputs and fermenters. Biogas is produced in fermenters, and Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plants provide heat and electricity. A more recent result introduced the concept of operations with flexible inputs in the P-Graph framework. In this work, the concept of flexible inputs was applied to model fermenters in the original case study. A new implementation of the original decision problem was made both as a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model and as a purely P-Graph model by using the flexible input technique. Both approaches provided the same optimal solution, with a 31% larger profit than the fixed input model.

The multiproduct pipeline network with multi-source and multi-terminal encompasses multi-point injection and multi-point distribution. Upon reorganization of batches at transfer depots, the intricacies of precise batch tracking become increasingly complex, thereby rendering the optimization of multiproduct pipeline network scheduling particularly arduous. In this paper, we introduce a dynamic index batch numbering method. By delineating the boundaries of intermediate injection points, the issue is bifurcated into two sub-problems: the optimization of batch planning for multiproduct pipeline with single-source and multi-terminal and the optimization of resource allocation at intermediate oil depots. The proposed algorithm is validated on two genuine multiproduct pipeline networks in China, demonstrating its capability to generate feasible solutions within a computational constraint of 18,000 CPU seconds. The findings reveal that this methodology holistically considers the entire pipeline network system, encompassing upstream oil intake, downstream oil supply, and the tank capacities of transfer depots, thereby establishing a coherent link between pipeline scheduling and depot planning. This paper may serve as a reference for the automated formulation of multiproduct pipeline network scheduling strategies.

Closed supply network modelling for end-of-life ship remanufacturing

Purpose This paper designs an optimal closed-loop supply chain network with an integrated forward and reverse logistics to examine the possibility of remanufacturing end-of-life (EoL) ships. Design/methodology/approach Explanatory variables are used to estimate the number of EoL ships available in a closed-loop supply chain network. The estimated number of EoL ships is used as an input in the model and then it is solved by a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model of the closed-loop supply chain network to minimise the total logistic costs. A discounted payback period formula is developed to calculate the length of time to recoup an investment based on the investment's discounted cash flows. Existing ship wrecking industry clusters in the Western region of India are used as the case study to apply the proposed model. Findings The MILP model has optimised the total logistics costs of the closed-loop supply network and ascertained the optimal number and location of remanufacturing for building EoL ships. The capital and variable costs required for establishing and operating remanufacturing centres are computed. To remanufacture 30 ships a year, the discounted payback period of this project is estimated to be less than two years. Practical implications Ship manufacturing businesses are yet to re-manufacture EoL ships, given high upfront capital expenditure and operational challenges. This study provides management insights into the costs and benefits of EoL ship remanufacturing;thus, informing the decision-makers to make strategic operational decisions. Originality/value The design of an optimal close loop supply chain network coupled with a Bayesian network approach and discounted payback period formula for the collection and remanufacturing of EoL ships provides a new integrated perspective to ship manufacturing.

This paper studies the investment planning of a decarbonised Norwegian continental shelf energy system considering the connection and interfaces with the European energy system. A multihorizon stochastic mixed-integer linear programming model is developed for such a problem. We consider short-term uncertainties, including wind and solar capacity factors, energy load, platform production profiles, and hydro power production limits. Hydrogen based energy hubs are considered both onshore and offshore for potential renewable power generation, distribution and storage. Future hydrogen market or demand is not included in the model. The results of multi-period planning towards 2050 show that: (a) offshore energy hubs are essentially wind power generation, conversion and distribution hubs, (b) a combination of offshore wind and power from shore may be a cost-efficient pathway for cutting emissions from the Norwegian continental shelf, (c) a total of 1.6 GW offshore wind may be needed to achieve a near zero emission Norwegian continental shelf energy system, 80% of which may be added in the first investment period and (d) offshore grid design is important for decarbonisation by distributing wind power efficiently;all five offshore platform clusters are connected to at least three other clusters by 2040, and they are fully connected by 2050.

A novel decision support framework for multi-objective aircraft routing problem

The aircraft routing problem has received extensive attention from researchers, prompting the utilization of diverse problem-solving approaches and the use of various metrics to inform decision-making. Despite the wealth of research, airline managers often rely heavily on their own experience when evaluating potential aircraft routing solutions. To bridge this gap and empower airline managers with a robust decision-making process, this paper proposes a novel modeling framework and decision support tool for solving the Multi-Objective Aircraft Routing Problem. Our methodological framework comprises 3 modules: (i) an efficient data handling and storage process to manage a large volume of data and ensure data tractability;(ii) a novel mixed-integer linear programming model to effectively solve the aircraft routing problem within 1 to 5 min of computation, even at large instances;(iii) a multi-objective algorithmic framework that effectively employs parallelization techniques to generate Pareto-optimal frontiers within 30 min of computation. The three components are integrated into an unified decision support tool that empowers airline managers to visualize and evaluate various aircraft routing solutions, considering multiple objectives simultaneously while leveraging the use of multi-criteria methods. To validate the proposed approach, historic data from AirAsia is used for testing. The results demonstrate the tool's capability to generate high-quality solutions that strike a balance between conflicting objectives, affirming its practicality and effectiveness in real-world applications.
