A stochastic optimization procedure to design the fair aggregation of energy users in a Renewable Energy Community

Optimizing unit sizes and operation within a Renewable Energy Community (REC) can match intermittent renewable energy generation with variable user energy demands. These uncertain variables are often represented by pre-defined stochastic scenarios, without searching for the "best" scenarios and testing the optimization models with these scenarios. Moreover, little work both optimized RECs under uncertainty and distributed optimal life-cycle costs (investment and operation) among members. Thus, the objectives are: i) identifying the "best" set of stochastic scenarios of solar irradiance and user electricity demands and ii) assessing the accuracy of the "stochastic forecasts" of the total system costs and unit sizes, obtained by solving a stochastic programming model based on the "best" scenarios. The proposed novel procedure shifts the "present moment" back in time to split historical data into "past" and "future" periods used to identify the "best" scenarios and compare the "stochastic forecasts" with the utopic "perfect forecasts" based on the perfect knowledge of real data, respectively. The small errors between these forecasts in the optimal life-cycle costs (less than 2 %) and sizes (3-13 %) indicate good effectiveness of the suggested procedure. Also, the optimal life-cycle costs of "stochastic forecasts" are fairly distributed among users by applying the Shapley value mechanism.

Towards sustainable energy systems: Multi-objective microgrid sizing for environmental and economic optimization

This paper proposes a new method for the multi-objective sizing of microgrids, which aims to minimize both the investment and operation costs, as well as the carbon footprint of their components and energy usage. The method employs mixed integer linear programming (MILP) and Pareto optimization to assess the balance between economic and environmental goals, constructed using the epsilon-constraint method. Additionally, the overall operation of a grid-connected microgrid is optimized considering unintentional islanding contingencies through a stochastic scenario-based mathematical programming model. Tests were conducted using data from CampusGrid, a real microgrid located at the University of Campinas (UNICAMP) in Brazil. The model determines the optimal size and type of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs), such as local Thermal Generation (TG), Photovoltaic (PV) systems, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESSs), and load/generation curtailment requirements in islanded mode. For carbon-intensity comparison, a case study was conducted using attributes and parameters from the city of Beijing in China. The results provide valuable insights into the optimal sizing and configuration of microgrids, with an emphasis on cost-efficient and environmentally sounding energy solutions.

Optimal Operation of Residential Battery Energy Storage Systems under COVID-19 Load Changes

Over the past few years as COVID-19 was declared a worldwide pandemic that resulted in load changes and an increase in residential loads, utilities have faced increasing challenges in maintaining load balance. Because out-of-home activities were limited, daily residential electricity consumption increased by about 12-30% with variable peak hours. In addition, battery energy storage systems (BESSs) became more affordable, and thus higher storage system adoption rates were witnessed. This variation created uncertainties for electric grid operators. The objective of this research is to study the optimal operation of residential battery storage systems to maximize utility benefits. This is accomplished by formulating an objective function to minimize distribution and generation losses, generation fuel prices, market fuel prices, generation at peak time, and battery operation cost and to maximize battery capacity. A mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) method has been developed and implemented for these purposes. A residential utility circuit has been selected for a case study. The circuit includes 315 buses and 100 battery energy storage systems without the connection of other distributed energy resources (DERs), e.g., photovoltaic and wind. Assuming that the batteries are charging overnight, the results show that energy costs can be reduced by 10% and losses can decrease by 17% by optimally operating batteries to support increased load demand.

Reliability-constrained planning of community integrated energy systems based on fault incidence matrix

Reliability is a prerequisite for community integrated energy systems to provide consumers with uninterrupted high-quality energy supply. However, it is still challenging to consider reliability in the planning of community integrated energy systems due to the complexity of energy conversion relationships. Conventional reliability-constrained planning methods usually form a bi-level optimization problem in which the planning scheme optimization and reliability index calculation are separated into two subproblems. In this paper, a novel reliability-constrained planning method for community integrated energy systems is proposed. First, the fault incidence matrices are employed to construct the analytic reliability evaluation model of community integrated energy system. Then, the reliability evaluation model is linearized and explicitly integrated into the planning model, forming a mixed-integer linear programming model. This model can be efficiently solved by mathematical optimization algorithms while effectively balancing the operation cost and reliability at the planning stage. Case studies are conducted based on a practical community integrated energy system in North China to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Food Supply Chains (FSCs) have become increasingly complex with the average distance between producers and consumers rising considerably in the past two decades. Consequently, FSCs are a major source of carbon emissions and reducing transportation costs a major challenge for businesses. To address this, we present a mathematical model to promote the three core dimensions of sustainability (economic, environmental, and social), based on the mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) method. The model addresses the environmental dimension by intending to decrease the carbon emissions of different transport modes involved in the logistics network. Several supply chain network characteristics are incorporated and evaluated, with a consideration of social sustainability (job generation from operating various facilities). The mathematical model's robustness is demonstrated by testing and deploying it to a variety of problem instances. A real-life case study (Norwegian salmon supply chain) helps to comprehend the model's applicability. To understand the importance of optimizing food supply networks holistically, the paper investigates the impact of multiple supply chain permutations on total cost, demand fluctuations and carbon emissions. To address fluctuations in retail demand, we undertook sensitivity analysis for variations in demand, enabling the proposed model to revamp Norway's salmon supply chain network. Subsequently, the results are thoroughly examined to identify managerial implications.

Numerous research studies was centered around supply chain design, development, and operation. One of the trending researches is the ones concerned with The "last mile delivery" stage, which involves the clients' willingness to be part of the supply chain. Henceforth, this work contemplates the Parcel Locker Stations as a solution to the "last-mile delivery" problem. The aim is to provide the logistics courier with a planning and optimization tool that strikes an optimum balance between two critical factors: the logistics company profits and the customers' satisfaction levels. The problem employs (MILP) mixed-integer linear programming with the aid of OPL CPLEX software to select the optimal allocation of lockers' sites in a particular network based in the state of Qatar. The emerging role of electric vehicles raises the issue of managing the integration of charging stations with the aim of ensuring safe and reliable network operation. Several factors could affect grid operation, among these traffic condition, station operator and electric vehicle user behavior. Vehicle usage pattern involves the location of connected vehicles to the charging stations within the grid. In this paper, the influence of electric vehicle plug-in position into a distribution network on voltage and power losses during optimal grid operation is investigated, by means of mixed-integer linear programming procedure, and suitable technical indicators are adopted to provide a synthetic evaluation of the effects of vehicle position. The proposed procedure is applied to a 33-node test grid integrating bidirectional EV charging stations on tertiary and industrial buses.

Demand-side distributed energy resources (DERs) are enabling transformations in electricity. Yet, questions remain on how these transformations will address disparities in clean energy access and affordability. This paper explores the efficacy designing community microgrids around dimensions of social and energy equity. It integrates a social vulnerability index (SoVI) into a mixed-integer linear program to optimize electricity operations across a 50-household Peer-to-Peer (P2P) community microgrid. The results show notable cost savings and revenue generation for socially vulnerable households relative to the status quo;this motivates additional research into designing electricity markets that more broadly account for social and energy equity.

Visualization of Real-Time Forest Firefighting Inference and Fire Resource Allocation Simulation Technology

In recent years, the increasing frequency of forest fires has threatened ecological and social security. Due to the risks of traditional fire drills, three-dimensional visualization technology has been adopted to simulate forest fire management. This paper presents an immersive decision-making framework for forest firefighting, designed to simulate the response of resources during fires. First, a fire resource scheduling optimization model for multiple fire stations is proposed. This model integrates the characteristics of fire spread with a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) framework, aiming to minimize response time and firefighting costs. It enables flexible resource scheduling optimization under various fire spread scenarios and constraints on firefighting resources. Second, the ant lion optimization algorithm (ALO) is enhanced, incorporating multiple firefighting weighting factors such as the density, distance, and wind direction of burning trees. This improvement allows for the dynamic selection of priority firefighting targets, facilitating the precise allocation of resources to efficiently complete fire suppression tasks. Finally, a three-dimensional virtual forest environment is developed to simulate real-time actions and processes during firefighting operations. The proposed framework provides an immersive and visualized real-time fire simulation method, offering valuable support for decision-making in forest fire management.

Impact of layout strategy and sector-coupling on the multi-criteria assessment of energy technology concepts for residential buildings

Energy system transformation needs decentralisation, decarbonisation and sector-coupling. Local energy systems are often customarily designed using heuristics for the technology layout. However, optimisation of the technology layout and operation is considered a powerful tool. Therefore, we investigate the influence of an optimised layout and the coupling of the electricity and heat sector on economic, ecological and technological criteria. The criteria comprise the annual costs, CO2 emissions, and the energy performance in terms of self-sufficiency and self-consumption. We consider typical energy technology concepts with fixed technology combinations for the heat and electricity supply of residential buildings. The optimisation is performed using a mixed-integer linear programming under the objective of minimal costs. The assessment is done using the Analytic Hierarchy Process. An optimised layout is found to reduce costs at the expense of emissions and energy performance. In comparison to the heuristic layout, especially the storage sizes differ among the layout strategies. Sector-coupling leads to CO2 emission savings and a higher self-consumption of the PV energy produced within the system. The multi-criteria assessment reveals higher performance scores for heuristically laid out concepts under a local sensitivity analysis of the criteria weights.
