One of the major barriers to successful commercialization of fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) is the high operational cost incurred by the hydrogen consumption and energy source degradation. To directly reduce the operational cost of FCEVs, this paper presents an operational cost minimization strategy (OCMS) for the energy management of FCEVs. The onboard energy system of the studied FCEV includes fuel cell, battery, and supercapacitor. Distinguished from previous studies, two discrete decision variables are introduced in the OCMS to optimize the operating modes of the battery and supercapacitor. Then, the proposed OCMS formulates the energy management problem of the FCEV as a mixed-integer nonlinear optimization problem. The optimal current reference for each energy source is obtained by solving this optimization problem online. The real-time performance of the OCMS is evaluated on a real-time digital simulator. Compared to a rule-based EMS, the OCMS demonstrates better cost performance by saving around 7% operational expenses under typical driving cycles.

A Consensus-Based Alternating Direction Method for mixed-integer and PDE-Constrained Gas Transport Problems

We consider dynamic gas transport optimization problems, which lead to largescale and nonconvex mixed-integer nonlinear optimization problems (MINLPs) on graphs. Usually, the resulting instances are too challenging to be solved by state-of-the-art MINLP solvers. In this paper, we use graph decompositions to obtain multiple optimization problems on smaller blocks, which can be solved in parallel and may result in simpler classes of optimization problems because not every block necessarily contains mixed-integer or nonlinear aspects. For achieving feasibility at the interfaces of the several blocks, we employ a tailored consensus-based penalty alternating direction method. Our numerical results show that such decomposition techniques can outperform the baseline approach of just solving the overall MINLP from scratch. However, a complete answer to the question of how to decompose MINLPs on graphs in dependence of the given model is still an open topic for future research.

Time-Domain Decomposition for mixed-integer Optimal Control Problems

We consider mixed-integer optimal control problems, whose optimality conditions involve global combinatorial optimization aspects for the corresponding Hamiltonian pointwise in time. We propose a time-domain decomposition, which makes this problem class accessible for mixed-integer programming using parallel-in-time direct discretizations. The approach is based on a decomposition of the optimality system and the interpretation of the resulting subproblems as suitably chosen mixed-integer optimal control problems on subintervals in time. An iterative procedure then ensures continuity of the states at the boundaries of the subintervals via co-state information encoded in virtual controls. We prove convergence of this iterative scheme for discrete-continuous linear-quadratic problems and present numerical results both for linear-quadratic as well as nonlinear problems.

We formulate a mixed-integer partial differential equation constrained optimization problem for designing an electromagnetic cloak governed by the 2D Helmholtz equation with absorb-ing boundary conditions. Our formulation is an alternative to the topology optimization formulation of electromagnetic cloaking design. We extend the formulation to include uncertainty with respect to the angle of the incidence wave, and we develop a mixed-integer trust-region approach for solving both the deterministic and the uncertain formulation. We present detailed numerical results that show that our trust-region approach obtains effective cloaks.

We mathematically justify metronomic chemotherapy as the best strategy to apply many cytotoxic drugs in oncology for both curative and palliative approaches, assuming the classical pharmacokinetic model together with the Emax pharmacodynamic and the Norton-Simon hypothesis. From the mathematical point of view, we will consider two mixed-integer nonlinear optimization problems, where the unknowns are the number of the doses and the quantity of each one, adjusting the administration times a posteriori.

Today, Formula 1 race cars are equipped with complex hybrid electric powertrains that display significant cross-couplings between the internal combustion engine and the electrical energy recovery system. Given that a large number of these phenomena are strongly engine-speed dependent, not only the energy management but also the gearshift strategy significantly influence the achievable lap time for a given fuel and battery budget. Therefore, in this paper we propose a detailed low-level mathematical model of the Formula 1 powertrain suited for numerical optimization, and solve the time-optimal control problem in a computationally efficient way. First, we describe the powertrain dynamics by means of first principle modeling approaches and neural network techniques, with a strong focus on the low-level actuation of the internal combustion engine and its coupling with the energy recovery system. Next, we relax the integer decision variable related to the gearbox by applying outer convexification and solve the resulting optimization problem. Our results show that the energy consumption budgets not only influence the fuel mass flow and electric boosting operation, but also the gearshift strategy and the low-level engine operation, e.g., the intake manifold pressure evolution, the air-to-fuel ratio or the turbine waste-gate position.

An operations-finance integrated model with financial constraints for a manufacturer in a multi-supplier multi-product supply chain

The goal of this paper is to propose an efficient operations-finance integrated decision framework for the manufacturers who face some financial challenges such as capital shortage, high cost of debt, and limited financing capacity. We developed a mixed-integer nonlinear model by extending the multi-product newsvendor problem to establish such a decision framework. To solve the proposed model, a three-phase approach is established based on the analytical analysis of the model features. In the first phase, an exact algorithm is proposed, which leads to a significant reduction in problem complexity. In the second phase, the financing capacity constraint is released and the rest of the problem is solved through KKT conditions. To handle the financing capacity constraint, two heuristics are proposed in the last phase which are efficient and easy to implement by practitioners. The results of the numerical analysis showed that in the presence of the financing capacity constraint, the firm should make integrated operations-finance decisions to prevent failure in business. Moreover, we found that even with an unlimited source of external financing, with the high cost of debt, the business fails according to the separate decision-making process. But, if the manufacturer makes its decisions based on the proposed integrated model in this paper, it can still stay competitive in such situations. Furthermore, the results of the performance evaluation of our solution approach captured its efficiency in solving large-scale problems in a short time.

Process Synthesis, Design, and Control: A mixed-integer Optimal Control Framework

A mixed-integer optimal control framework for analyzing the interaction of process synthesis, design, and control is presented in this paper. The approach integrates the economic design and dynamic controllability into a multiobjective mixed-integer Optimal Control Problem (MIOCP). The problem formulation includes dynamic models and incorporates both discrete and continuous decisions. An algorithm for the solution of the MIOCP is developed based on the principles of Generalized Benders Decomposition for mixed-integer nonlinear optimization. The algorithm is used to determine the trade-offs between the economic design and dynamic controllability of a reactor-separator-recycle system.

This paper presents an overview of the recent advances in deterministic global optimization approaches and their applications in the areas of Process Design and Control. The focus is on global optimization methods for (a) twice-differentiable constrained nonlinear optimization problems, (b) mixed-integer nonlinear optimization problems, and (c) locating all solutions of nonlinear systems of equations. Theoretical advances and computational studies on process design, batch design under uncertainty, phase equilibrium, location of azeotropes, stability margin, process synthesis, and parameter estimation problems are discussed.

The paper proposes a new methodology for optimal planning of medium voltage distribution networks. The overall model is presented as a two-stage optimization model, where the first stage deals with the investment part and the second stage focuses on the operation part. The novelty of the proposed model is demonstrated through the explicit incorporation of network security constraints in the mathematical model, in line with the UK planning standards, while taking into consideration different operating regimes with changing load and generation profiles, integration of new distributed generation units, construction of circuits on new corridors and optimal network reconfiguration. The highly complex mixed-integer nonlinear optimization model is applied to a few practical medium-voltage test systems of up to 120 nodes using a dedicated commercial software package. Some of the characteristics results are examined and highlighted in this paper. Additionally, sensitivity analyses are done to determine critical parameters affecting the development and performance of medium voltage distribution networks.
