A novel multi-operation sequencing formulation for the crude oil scheduling problem with restricted overlapping constraints

The scheduling of crude oil operations holds critical significance in the petrochemical industry due to its profound influence on downstream unit operations and, consequently, overall business profitability. This work presents a novel multi-operation sequencing formulation considering operations with restricted overlapping constraints. This operation-centric model also distinguishes itself by incorporating constraints posed by refinery practice such as downstream product management, multiparcel unloading, brine settling, and changeover detection. A new symmetry-breaking strategy is applied to remove symmetric solutions properly and expedite problem solving while ensuring solution quality. Case studies of various examples are conducted to validate the efficacy of the proposed model. Comparative analyses are performed with the unit-specific event-based formulation, which enables multiple time grids tailored to different units and is widely used in continuous-time modeling. Results further demonstrate the great potential of the presented formulation in generating tighter bounds and accelerating convergence.

The power generation sector is considered one of the major contributors to nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions which have serious impacts on air quality. An optimization model is developed to help decision-makers determine the best strategy or mix of strategies for the electricity sector to meet a given NOx reduction target and electricity demand at a minimum cost. The model recommended the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology to be applied at higher NOx emissions and the reduction reached up to 80 %. This potential option provides promising prospects for NOx emissions control, which is in line with the economic demand for sustainable energy and environmentally friendly technologies.

Hydro energy systems management in Portugal: Profit-based evaluation of a mixed-integer nonlinear approach

In this paper, a novel mixed-integer nonlinear approach is proposed to solve the short-term hydro scheduling problem in the day-ahead electricity market, considering not only head-dependency, but also start/stop of units, discontinuous operating regions and discharge ramping constraints. Results from a case study based on one of the main Portuguese cascaded hydro energy systems are presented, showing that the proposed mixed-integer nonlinear approach is proficient. Strong-branching inequalities for convex mixed integer nonlinear programs

Strong branching is an effective branching technique that can significantly reduce the size of the branch-and-bound tree for solving mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) problems. The focus of this paper is to demonstrate how to effectively use "discarded" information from strong branching to strengthen relaxations of MINLP problems. Valid inequalities such as branching-based linearizations, various forms of disjunctive inequalities, and mixing-type inequalities are all discussed. The inequalities span a spectrum from those that require almost no extra effort to compute to those that require the solution of an additional linear program. In the end, we perform an extensive computational study to measure the impact of each of our proposed techniques. Computational results reveal that existing algorithms can be significantly improved by leveraging the information generated as a byproduct of strong branching in the form of valid inequalities.

A new Lagrangian decomposition approach applied to the integration of refinery planning and crude-oil scheduling

The aim of this paper is to introduce a methodology to solve a large-scale mixed-integer nonlinear program (MINLP) integrating the two main optimization problems appearing in the oil refining industry: refinery planning and crude-oil operations scheduling. The proposed approach consists of using Lagrangian decomposition to efficiently integrate both problems. The main advantage of this technique is to solve each problem separately. A new hybrid dual problem is introduced to update the Lagrange multipliers. It uses the classical concepts of cutting planes, subgradient, and boxstep. The proposed approach is compared to a basic sequential approach and to standard MINLP solvers. The results obtained on a case study and a larger refinery problem show that the new Lagrangian decomposition algorithm is more robust than the other approaches and produces better solutions in reasonable times. Adaptive piecewise linear relaxations for enclosure computations for nonconvex multiobjective mixed-integer quadratically constrained programs

In this paper, a new method for computing an enclosure of the nondominated set of multiobjective mixed-integer quadratically constrained programs without any convexity requirements is presented. In fact, our criterion space method makes use of piecewise linear relaxations in order to bypass the nonconvexity of the original problem. The method chooses adaptively which level of relaxation is needed in which parts of the image space. Furthermore, it is guaranteed that after finitely many iterations, an enclosure of the nondominated set of prescribed quality is returned. We demonstrate the advantages of this approach by applying it to multiobjective energy supply network problems.

Convex reformulations for solving a nonlinear network design problem

We consider a nonlinear nonconvex network design problem that arises, for example, in natural gas or water transmission networks. Given is such a network with active and passive components, that is, valves, compressors, control valves (active) and pipelines (passive), and a desired amount of flow at certain specified entry and exit nodes in the network. The active elements are associated with costs when used. Besides flow conservation constraints in the nodes, the flow must fulfill nonlinear nonconvex pressure loss constraints on the arcs subject to potential values (i.e., pressure levels) in both end nodes of each arc. The problem is to compute a cost minimal setting of the active components and numerical values for the flow and node potentials. We examine different (convex) relaxations for a subproblem of the design problem and benefit from them within a branch-and-bound approach. We compare different approaches based on nonlinear optimization numerically on a set of test instances.

This study recommends a stochastic optimisation model for the security-constrained unit commitment (SCUC), which incorporates the optimal transmission switching (OTS) for managing the uncertainty of wind power generation and equipment failures, i.e. outage unit/line. Also, this study presents a technique in stochastic SCUC model with the OTS action using the AC optimal power flow (AC-OPF). The AC-OPF provides a more accurate picture of power flow in the power system compared to the DC optimal power flow that is usually considered in the literature for the stochastic SCUC models and OTS action. While the stochastic SCUC model with the OTS action based on the AC-OPF is a mixed-integer non-linear programming model, this study transforms it into a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model. The MILP approach uses a piecewise linear model of the AC-OPF, which allows the reactive power and voltage to be considered directly in power flow model. This transformation guarantees achievement of a global optimal solution by the existing software and algorithms. The proposed stochastic SCUC problem is evaluated on the 6-bus and IEEE 118-bus test systems in pre- and post-transmission switching action. Obtained results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed model.

This paper describes a multi-period mixed integer nonlinear programming model for determining the optimal crop allocation for several planting cycles based on future crop prices and fresh water availability. An autoregressive moving average model is implemented to predict prices, and a new superstructure that includes all configurations of interest for the reuse, recycling, storage, and regeneration of water is employed. Two characteristic examples considering maize, wheat, alfalfa, and beans and their optimal scheduling for the years 2020, 2021, and 2022 are solved with the objective of maximizing the total annual profit. In determining the profit, the operating costs include fresh water, fresh fertilizer, and pumping and the capital costs include storage tanks, treatment units, pipelines, and pumps. Strategic placements of PMUs for power network observability considering redundancy measurement

This paper proposes a mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) formulation with binary-valued variables for the optimal installation of the phasor measurement units (PMUs) in a power network. The MINLP framework has been solved by a two-phase branch-and-bound algorithm (BBA) for the optimal PMU placement (OPP) problem. The present work deals with the solution of the OPP problem without considering the radial buses including in the optimal solution. PMU is pre-assigned to each bus connected to a radial bus such that the radial buses are excluded from the list of potential PMU locations. The programming technique is used to determine the optimum number of PMUs and their locations to make the interconnected power network completely observable. The proposed BBA may provide multiple solutions at the lowest objective value, each time the optimizer routine restarts. Therefore, the obtained optimal solutions are being ranked regarding the measurement redundancy index. The two-phase branch-and-bound algorithm is applied to IEEE standard test systems as well as to New England 39-bus and a northern regional power grid 246-bus system. The proposed algorithm has been compared with the existing programming techniques in the recent literature. The simulation results obtained by the proposed BBA indicate the effectiveness and the efficiency to detect the desired target. (C) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
