DNA tiles are self-assembled nanostructures, which offer exciting opportunities for synthesis of novel materials. A challenge for structural design of DNA tiles is to identify optimal locations for so-called crossovers, which are bridges between DNA double helices formed by pairs of single-stranded DNA. An optimization-based approach is presented to identify optimal locations for such crossovers. Minimization of a potential-energy model for a given structural design demonstrates the importance of local minima. Both deterministic global optimization of a reduced model and multistart optimization of the full model are applied successfully to identify the global minimum. MINLP optimization using a branch-and-bound algorithm (GAMS/SBB) identifies an optimal structural design of a DNA tile successfully with significant reduction in computational load compared to exhaustive enumeration, which demonstrates the potential of the proposed method to reduce trial-and-error efforts for structural design of DNA tiles. Power distribution systems in the US are commonly supported by wood utility poles. These assets require regular maintenance to enhance the reliability of power delivery to support many dependent functions of the society. Limitations in budget, however, warrant efficient allocation of limited resources based on optimal preventive maintenance plans. A few studies have developed risk-based metrics to support risk-informed decision making in preventive maintenance planning for power distribution systems. However, integration of risk-based metrics and optimization for enhancing the life-cycle resilience of distribution systems has not been explored. To address this gap, this paper proposes a mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) model to maximize the life-cycle resilience of aging power distribution systems subject to multi-occurrences of hurricane events using an optimal risk-based maintenance planning. For this purpose, a risk-based index called the Expected Outages is proposed and integrated into the optimization problem to minimize the total expected number of power outages in the entire planning horizon. Various uncertainties in the performance of poles under stochastic occurrences of hazards are taken into account through advanced fragility models and an efficient recursive formulation that models the uncertainty of precedent pole failures. The proposed approach is applied to a large, realistic power distribution system for long-term maintenance planning given a total budget limit and different levels of periodic budget constraints. The resulting optimization problems are solved through the branch and bound algorithm. Results indicate that applying the presented methodology leads to a significant enhancement of the life-cycle resilience of distribution systems compared to the commonly implemented strength-based maintenance strategy set by National Electric Safety Code.

We consider the problem of minimizing a continuously differentiable function of several variables subject to simple bound constraints where some of the variables are restricted to take integer values. We assume that the first order derivatives of the objective function can be neither calculated nor approximated explicitly. This class of mixedintegernonlinear optimization problems arises frequently in many industrial and scientific applications and this motivates the increasing interest in the study of derivative-free methods for their solution. The continuous variables are handled by a linesearch strategy whereas to tackle the discrete ones we employ a local search-type approach. We propose different algorithms which are characterized by the way the current iterate is updated and by the stationarity conditions satisfied by the limit points of the sequences they produce.

We discuss a tank design problem for a multi product plant, in which the optimal cycle time and the optimal campaign size are unknown. A mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) formulation is presented, where non-convexities are due to the tank investment cost, storage cost, campaign setup cost and variable production rates. The objective of the optimization model is to minimize the sum of the production cost per ton per product produced. A continuous-time mathematical programming formulation is proposed and several extensions are discussed. The model is implemented in GAMS and computational results are reported for the two global MINLP solver BARON and LINDOGlobal as well as several nonlinear solvers available in GAMS. The paper examines the applicability of mathematical programming methods to the simultaneous optimization of the structure and the operational parameters of a combined-cycle-based cogeneration plant. The optimization problem is formulated as a nonconvex mixed-integernonlinear problem (MINLP) and solved by the MINLP solver LaGO. The algorithm generates a convex relaxation of the MINLP and applies a Branch and Cut algorithm to the relaxation. Numerical results for different demands for electric power and process steam are discussed and a sensitivity analysis is performed. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This paper presents a mixed-integer quadratically constrained programming (MIQCP) formulation for B-spline constraints. The formulation can be used to obtain an exact MIQCP reformulation of any spline-constrained optimization problem problem, provided that the polynomial spline functions are continuous. This reformulation allows practitioners to use a general-purpose MIQCP solver, instead of a special-purpose spline solver, when solving B-spline constrained problems. B-splines are a powerful and widely used modeling tool, previously restricted from optimization due to lack of solver support. This contribution may encourage practitioners to use B-splines to model constraint functions. However, as the numerical study suggests, there is still a large gap between the solve times of the general-purpose solvers using the proposed formulation, and the special-purpose spline solver CENSO, the latter being significantly lower.

This work presents a whole-year simulation study on nonlinearmixed-integer Model Predictive Control (MPC) for a complex thermal energy supply system which consists of a heat pump, stratified water storages, free cooling facilities, and a large underground thermal storage. For solution of the arising mixed-integer Non-Linear Programs (MINLPs) we apply an existing general and optimal-control-suitable decomposition approach. To compensate deviation of forecast inputs from measured disturbances, we introduce a moving horizon estimation step within the MPC strategy. The MPC performance for this study, which consists of more than 50,000 real-time suitable MINLP solutions, is compared to an elaborate conventional control strategy for the system. It is shown that MPC can significantly reduce the yearly energy consumption while providing a similar degree of constraint satisfaction, and autonomously identify previously unknown, beneficial operation modes.

We propose a superstructure optimization framework for process synthesis with simultaneous heat integration and utility plant design. Processing units in the chemical plant can be modeled using rigorous unit models or surrogate models generated from experimental results or off-line calculations. The utility plant subsystem includes multiple steam types with variable temperature and pressure. For the heat integration subsystem, we consider variable heat loads of process streams as well as variable intervals for the utilities. To enhance the solution of the resulting mixed-integer nonlinear programming models, we develop (1) new methods for the calculation of steam properties, (2) algorithms for variable bound calculation, and (3) systematic methods for the generation of redundant constraints. The applicability of our framework is illustrated through a biofuel case study which includes a novel non-enzymatic hydrolysis technology and new separation technologies, both of which are modeled based on experimental results. Integrating solar thermal energy into conventional coal-fired power plant has been proved to be an efficient way to use solar energy and improve the generation efficiency of coal-fired power plant. Because of the variability of solar irradiance, an optimization strategy based on switching solar integrate mode according to the solar irradiance is proposed in this paper. A parabolic trough solar aided coal-fired combined heat and power (SACF-CHP) system model is built to analyze the system performance. In order to obtain the minimum Levelized Electricity Costs (LEC), a generic superstructure of solar integrate mode is established, and a mixedintegernonlinearprogramming approach is applied to optimize the oil-water heat exchanger area and solar integrate mode. The optimized results of a 150 MW SACF-CHP system indicate that switching integrate mode according to the solar irradiance would have a lower LEC than fixing the integrate mode invariably, and the optimal LEC of those two integrate modes are 0.0771 $/kW h and 0.0794 $/kW h respectively. Besides, the LEC decreases at first and then increases with the increase of the oil-water heat exchanger area. And the optimal heat exchanger area for changeable integrate mode are 725 m(2). This paper proposes a pricing strategy based on the variable-ratio charging-compensation scheme for a ride-hailing platform with combined travel modes (Express or Carpool) of riders in a general network composed of multiple corridors. We establish a Stackelberg game model with the platform as a leader and the riders as followers to capture the decision-making process of stakeholders, in which the pricing decision is determined by the platform in the upper level taking each rider's optimal response into account and travel modes are selected by riders independently in the lower level. The built model is a mixed-integer bilevel programming problem, which is difficult to solve due to its inherent hierarchical structure and discrete variables. By means of some mathematical techniques, we transform the bilevel model equivalently into a single-level mixed-integer nonlinear programming problem. Based on the numerical examples and results analysis, we bring some interesting managerial insights into the pricing of ride-hailing platforms, one of which is that booking fees of Express, unit time and distance fees of Express, compensations for Express riders and Express drivers are the core pricing factors to affect travel mode choices of riders.
