Comparison of formulations for the two-level uncapacitated facility location problem with single assignment constraints

We consider the two-level uncapacitated facility location problem with single assignment constraints (TUFLP-S), an extension of the uncapacitated facility location problem. We present six mixed-integer programming models for the TUFLP-S based on reformulation techniques and on the relaxation of the integrality of some of the variables associated with location decisions. We compare the models by carrying out extensive computational experiments on large, hard, artificial instances, as well as on instances derived from an industrial application in freight transportation. Optimising lot sizing with nonlinear production rates in a multi-product multi-machine environment

In a variety of discrete manufacturing environments, it is common to experience a nonlinear production rate. In particular, our interest is in the case of an increasing production rate, where learning creates efficiencies. This leads to greater output per unit time as the process continues. However, the advantages of an increasing production rate may be offset by other factors. For examples, JIT policies typically lead to smaller lot sizes, where the value of an increasing production rate is largely lost. We develop a general model that balances the impact of various competing effects. Our research focuses on determining lot sizes that satisfy demand requirements while minimising production and holding costs. We extend our prior work by developing a multi-product, multi-machine method for modelling and solving this class of production problems. The solution method is demonstrated using the production function from the PR#2 grinding process for a production plant in Carlisle, PA. The solution heuristic provides solution times that are on average only 0.22 to 0.55% above optimum as the solution parameters are varied and the ratio of heuristic solution times to optimal solution times varies from 18.16 to 14.15%.

Renewable energy technologies, specifically, solar photovoltaic cells, combined with battery storage and diesel generators, form a hybrid system capable of independently powering remote locations, i.e., those isolated from larger grids. If sized correctly, hybrid systems reduce fuel consumption compared to diesel generator-only alternatives. We present an optimization model for establishing a hybrid power design and dispatch strategy for remote locations, such as a military forward operating base, that models the acquisition of different power technologies as integer variables and their operation using nonlinear expressions. Our cost-minimizing, nonconvex, mixed-integer, nonlinear program contains a detailed battery model. Due to its complexities, we present linearizations, which include exact and convex under-estimation techniques, and a heuristic, which determines an initial feasible solution to serve as a "warm start" for the solver. We determine, in a few hours at most, solutions within 5% of optimality for a candidate set of technologies;these solutions closely resemble those from the nonlinear model. Our instances contain real data spanning a yearly horizon at hour fidelity and demonstrate that a hybrid system could reduce fuel consumption by as much as 50% compared to a generator-only solution.

Optimization models for impaired water management in active shale gas development areas

In this work we present a mixed-integer linear programming model to support upstream operators in identifying optimal strategies for impaired water management in active shale gas development areas. The proposed model is designed to coordinate three key development decisions such that the net present value is maximized: a) the fracturing schedule, b) the water supply sourcing and distribution strategy, and c) the selection of appropriate water storage solutions. We specifically allow return-to-pad operations in the fracturing schedule and we assume that water blending ratios for fracturing jobs are unrestricted, i.e., companies may use only impaired water to meet the completions water demand. Moreover, we explicitly consider the sizing and timing of water storage solutions. By applying the optimization model to a real-world case study, we find that impaired water disposal volumes can be reduced drastically if operators manage to coordinate their fracturing schedule with impaired water availability.

On relaxing the integrality of the allocation variables of the reliability fixed-charge location problem

The aim of the reliability fixed-charge location problem is to find robust solutions to the fixed-charge location problem when some facilities might fail with probability q. In this paper we analyze for which allocation variables in the reliability fixed-charge location problem formulation the integrality constraint can be relaxed so that the optimal value matches the optimal value of the binary problem. We prove that we can relax the integrality of all the allocation variables associated to non-failable facilities or of all the allocation variables associated to failable facilities but not of both simultaneously. We also demonstrate that we can relax the integrality of all the allocation variables whenever a family of valid inequalities is added to the set of constraints or whenever the parameters of the problem satisfy certain conditions. Finally, when solving the instances in a data set we discuss which relaxation or which modification of the problem works better in terms of resolution time and we illustrate that relaxing the integrality of the allocation variables inappropriately can alter the objective value considerably.

A polyhedral study on chance constrained program with random right-hand side

The essential structure of the mixed-integer programming formulation for chance-constrained program (CCP) is the intersection of multiple mixing sets with a 0-1 knapsack. To improve our computational capacity on CCP, an underlying substructure, the (single) mixing set with a 0-1 knapsack, has received substantial attentions recently. In this study, we consider a CCP problem with stochastic right-hand side under a finite discrete distribution. We first present a family of strong inequalities that subsumes known facet-defining ones for that single mixing set. Due to the flexibility of our generalized inequalities, we develop a new separation heuristic that has a complexity much less than existing one and guarantees generated cutting planes are facet-defining for the polyhedron of CCP. Then, we study lifting and superadditive lifting on knapsack cover inequalities, and provide an implementable procedure on deriving another family of strong inequalities for the single mixing set. Finally, different from the traditional approach that aggregates original constraints to investigate polyhedral implications due to their interactions, we propose a novel blending procedure that produces strong valid inequalities for CCP by integrating those derived from individual mixing sets. We show that, under certain conditions, they are the first type of facet-defining inequalities describing intersection of multiple mixing sets, and design an efficient separation heuristic for implementation. In the computational experiments, we perform a systematic study and illustrate the efficiency of the proposed inequalities on solving chance constrained static probabilistic lot-sizing problems.

Scenario analysis of carbon emissions' anti-driving effect on Qingdao's energy structure adjustment with an optimization model, Part II: Energy system planning and management

In this study, an inexact multistage stochastic mixed-integer programming (IMSMP) method was developed for supporting regional-scale energy system planning (EPS) associated with multiple uncertainties presented as discrete intervals, probability distributions and their combinations. An IMSMPbased energy system planning (IMSMP-ESP) model was formulated for Qingdao to demonstrate its applicability. Solutions which can provide optimal patterns of energy resources generation, conversion, transmission, allocation and facility capacity expansion schemes have been obtained. The results can help local decision makers generate cost-effective energy system management schemes and gain a comprehensive tradeoff between economic objectives and environmental requirements. Moreover, taking the CO2 emissions scenarios mentioned in Part I into consideration, the anti-driving effect of carbon emissions on energy structure adjustment was studied based on the developed model and scenario analysis. Several suggestions can be concluded from the results: (a) to ensure the smooth realization of low-carbon and sustainable development, appropriate price control and fiscal subsidy on high-cost energy resources should be considered by the decision-makers;(b) compared with coal, natural gas utilization should be strongly encouraged in order to insure that Qingdao could reach the carbon discharges peak value in 2020;(c) to guarantee Qingdao's power supply security in the future, the construction of new power plants should be emphasised instead of enhancing the transmission capacity of grid infrastructure. This paper considers the issue of how to include large positive and negative differences in multicriteria sorting models, based on the outranking paradigm. We show that various outranking relations can be constructed to take into account these out- and under-performances, before presenting mathematical programs to learn the preferential parameters of these models. Integrated multi-period dynamic inventory classification and control

This paper investigates the dynamic integration and optimization of inventory classification and inventory control decisions to maximize the net present value (NPV) of profit over a planning horizon. A mixed-integer linear programming model is developed by explicitly accounting for various real-world complexities, such as nonstationary demand, arbitrary review period, and limited inventory budget. We apply the model to a 900-SKU experiment and observe an average 7.5% improvement in profit over the traditional ABC approach. A real world application for a cheese manufacturer provides a nearly 3% improvement in company's profit with a 13% reduction in inventory capital compared to its current eight-class multi-criteria inventory classification scheme. Comprehensive computational experiments are performed to examine the individual and interactive effects of various parameters on the inventory performance. Results show that it is critical for a company to manage its inventory both dynamically in the face of nonstationary demand and holistically by integrating SKU classification and policy setting. Our work provides a practical decision-support tool that simultaneously optimizes multi-period inventory classification and control decisions under nonstationary demand. It contributes to the inventory management literature by bridging two distinct streams of inventory research, inventory classification and inventory optimization, within a practical inventory modeling framework. Our study also offers several managerial implications for manufacturers and distributors managing finished goods inventory.

Calculating the profits of an economic MPC applied to CSP plants with thermal storage system

Electricity producers participating in a day-ahead energy market aim to maximize profits derived from electricity sales. The daily generation schedule has to be offered in advance, usually the previous day before a certain moment in time. The development of an economically-optimal generation schedule is the core of the generation scheduling problem. To solve this problem, renewable energy plant owners need, besides energy prices forecast, weather prediction. Among renewable energy sources, concentrated solar power (CSP) plants with thermal energy storage (TES) may find it easier to participate in electricity markets due to their semi-dispatchable generation. In any case, the limited accuracy of forecasting solar resource brings about the risk of penalties that may be imposed to CSP plants for deviation from the submitted schedule. This paper proposes a model-based predictive control (MPC) approach with an economic objective function to tackle the scheduling problem in CSP plants with TES. By this approach, the most recent forecast and the current status of plant can be used by the proposed economic MPC approach to reschedule the generation conveniently at regular time intervals. On the other hand, a more feasible generation schedule for the next day is performed at the appropriate time thanks to the use of short-term forecast. The proposed approach is applied, in a simulation context, to a 50 MW parabolic trough collector-based CSP plant with TES under the assumptions of perfect price forecasts and participation in the Spanish day-ahead energy market. A case study based on a half-year period to test several meteorological conditions is performed. In this study, an economic analysis is carried out using actual values of energy price, penalty cost, solar resource data and its day-ahead forecast. Results show an economic improvement in comparison with a traditional day-ahead scheduling strategy, especially in periods with a bad weather forecast. To overcome the lack of
