One of the most widespread modern control strategies is the discrete-time Model Predictive Control ( MPC) method which requires the solution of the quadratic programming problem. For systems with binary input variables the quadratic problem is replaced by more challenging mixed-integer quadratic programming ( MIQP) problem. The objective of this work is the implementation of MIQP problem solver in a low power embedded computing platform with limited computational power and limited memory. The MIQP problem is solved using branch-and-bound method and the solution of the relaxed original quadratic problems with equality and inequality constraints solved in the nodes of a binary tree is found with interior-point algorithm. A simulation study of the reserve constrained economic dispatch problem for power generators with prohibited zones is presented. Simulation results show the applicability of the proposed solver for small size MIQP problems. (C) 2015 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Voltage instability can be mitigated or avoided by coordination of appropriate control resources. In addition, to meet the power quality requirements, it is desirable to find the whole minimal-cost trajectory using available controls without violating any constraints. This is the trajectory optimization problem and intrinsically hard to solve in power systems because of the interactions between continuous dynamics and discrete or continuous controls. The hard constraints also add to the complexities. In this paper, the trajectory optimization problem is formulated as a mixed-integer quadratic programming (MIQP) problem which can reduce the computation burden. Due to the open-loop characteristics, this formulation will be subject to uncertainty and the system may not evolve as expected. However, the proposed framework embeds the MIQP formulations into receding horizon control (RHC) to compensate for uncertainties such as model error, disturbances, and noise. As a result, reasonable computation speed and improved accuracy are obtained.

We devise a model predictive control algorithm for impulsive linear systems with autonomous flow dynamics and controlled jumps. Thereby the moments of jumps are not fixed, but rather considered as decision variables. To this end, the complete system dynamics is formulated as a mixed-logical dynamical system after an appropriate discretization step. The resulting optimization problem contains both discrete and continuous decision variables, giving rise to a mixed-integer programming problem. The objective of the optimization is to steer the states into a target set. The stability is addressed through an appropriate cost function together with invariance conditions, as well as by introducing terminal constraints which are only enforced within a certain distance to the target set, thus, providing a trade-off between guaranteed convergence to the target set and computational complexity. Reported dynamic multi-satellite scheduling approaches for Earth observations show many limitations when operating in time-varying uncertain environment. They largely run over predetermined time periods and often offline, assume negligible execution time, improperly account for the passage of time during planning, remain myopic or fail to show "anytime" behavior. A novel approach to solving the dynamic multi-satellite scheduling problem is proposed. The open-loop with feedback DynaQUEST approach includes an event-driven controller monitoring dynamic situation evolution while supervising a co-evolving episodic scheduling problem solver. Reactive to real-time and delayed information feedback, the controller timely enables the problem-solver to stay responsive, interruptible and adaptive, taking advantage of emerging opportunities to timely improve solution quality. The problem-solver continually solves a new static problem shaped by dynamic changes and constrained by current resource commitments to adaptively expand the emergent solution. Problem model formulation is based on network flow optimization using mathematical programming. Departing from mainstream approaches widely promoting an exact objective function coupled with a heuristic problem-solving method, the proposed approach alternatively combines an approximate objective function and an exact algorithm. The approach embraces an extended time horizon relaxing myopic planning. Computational results prove the approach to be cost-effective and to outperform alternate baseline heuristics.

As the electric vehicle charging demand for highway travel increases, the charging operation is gradually becoming a significant challenge for highway charging station operators. Distributed renewable power generators could satisfy the charging demand by providing clean energy for charging stations. In this paper, a charging price-setting scheme for highway charging station operators is formulated. We model this scenario as a mixed-integer quadratic programming problem, aiming to maximize profits while achieving spatial and temporal shifting of EVs charging loads to consume renewable energy (e.g., photovoltaic and wind power). The numerical case study shows that highway charging station operators adopting the proposed method can effectively promote renewable energy consumption and boost their profits.

In this paper optimization of N-removal in sewage treatment is accomplished by exploiting mixed logical dynamic method(MLD). According to simplifying activated sludge process No.1 model (ASM1), N-removal dynamic models in continuously mixed, continuously fed activated sludge process (ASP) are established by employing expert experience about activated sludge process. Then predictive control approach is applied to optimal control of this process. The simulation results show that it can cover the relative expert experiences more widely by applying MLD to modeling and control of activated sludge process. These expert experiences combined with continuous variable model make model more precise and can get better effect of optimization and control. This study provides a new approach to the research of sewage treatment.

Embedded mixed-integer quadratic Optimization using Accelerated Dual Gradient Projection

The execution of a hybrid model predictive controller (MPC) on an embedded platform requires solving a mixed-integer quadratic programming (MIQP) in real time. The MIQP problem is NP-hard, which poses a major challenge in an environment where computational and memory resources are limited. To address this issue, we propose the use of accelerated dual gradient projection (GPAD) to find both the exact and an approximate solution of the MIQP problem. In particular, an existing GPAD algorithm is specialized to solve the relaxed quadratic programming (QP) subproblems that arise in a Branch and Bound (B&B) method for solving the MIQP to optimality. Furthermore, we present an approach to find a suboptimal integer feasible solution of a MIQP problem without using B&B. The GPAD algorithm is very simple to code and requires only basic arithmetic operations which makes it well suited for an embedded implementation. The performance of the proposed approaches is comparable with the state of the art MIQP solvers for small-scale problems. © 2017

As inverter-based distributed energy resources (DERs) such as photovoltaic (PV) and battery energy storage system (BESS) penetrate within the distribution system. New challenges regarding how to utilize these devices to improve power quality arises. Before, PV systems were required to disconnect from the grid during a large disturbance, but now smart inverters are required to have dynamically controlled functions that allows them to remain connected to the grid. Monitoring power flow at the point of common coupling is one of the many functions the controller should perform. Smart inverters can inject active power to pick up critical load or inject reactive power to regulate voltage within the electric grid. In this context, this thesis focuses on a high level and local control design that incorporates DERs. Different controllers are implemented to stabilize the microgrid in an Islanding and resiliency mode. The microgrid can be used as a resiliency source when the distribution is unavailable. An average model in the D-Q frame is calculated to analyze the inherent dynamics of the current controller for the point of common coupling (PCC). The space vector approach is applied to design the voltage and frequency controller. Secondly, using inverters for Volt/VAR control (VVC) can provide a faster response for voltage regulation than traditional voltage regulation devices. Another objective of this research is to demonstrate how smart inverters and capacitor banks in the system can be used to eliminate the voltage deviation. A mixed-integer quadratic problem (MIQP) is formulated to determine the amount of reactive power that should be injected or absorbed at the appropriate nodes by inverter. The Big M method is used to address the nonconvex problem. This contribution can be used by distribution operators to minimize the voltage deviation in the system.

Optimal dispatching of power grid integrating wind-hydrogen systems

In power grid integrating wind-hydrogena systems, the power balance constraints may result in large-scale wind curtailment during the valley-load period. Additionally, the classic two-stage dispatching strategy cannot evaluate the real-time hydrogen-production efficiency loss in the day-ahead stage, while the one-stage dispatching method will result in computation difficulty or a non-optimal result with or without the full-scale prediction horizon. To address this problem, a novel dispatching strategy is presented in this paper. Considering the electricity and heat demand for hydrogen production, a molten salt heat storage system (HSS) is used to improve the operational flexibility. The external characteristics of hydrogen production are modelled. On this basis, an efficiency-decision method that determines the optimal hydrogen production power is presented;thus, the decision-making variable number can be notably reduced. Considering the real-time power fluctuation, a novel energy dispatching model is proposed in the day-ahead stage to optimize efficiency decisions and thermal power units. Using linearization techniques, this model converted a classic mixed-integer quadratic programming (MIQP) problem and solved it efficiently. Simulation studies on an IEEE-30-node power grid integrating wind-hydrogen systems indicate that the proposed dispatching strategy can reduce the operational cost of the power grid by 4.4%. The results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed dispatching strategy.
