This paper proposes a resilience enhancement strategy for power transmission system against ice storms by the optimal coordination of power system schedule with the pre-positioning and routing of mobile dc de-icing devices (MDIDs). A two-stage robust optimization model is established to accommodate the variable ice thickness on transmission lines. The first stage coordinates the pre-positioned MDIDs and unit commitment in day-ahead. These decisions, which are based on a robust approach, can accommodate the variable ice thickness in which the coordinated real-time schedule would always he feasible with respect to day-ahead decisions. At the second stage, the real-time operation, which integrates the power system dispatch, de-icing schedule, and MDID routing, is scheduled according to the real-time ice thickness. Auxiliary variables are adopted to convert the proposed nonconvex nonlinear model to a mixed-integer second-order cone programming (MISOCP) problem. The nested column-and-constraint generation algorithm is utilized to solve the two-stage robust MISOCP problem. Several computational enhancement strategies including Lagrangian relaxation are proposed to improve the performance of the proposed resilience enhancement strategy. Numerical results for an integrated 6-bus 6-node electricity-road network and a real-world example employed in China show the effectiveness of the proposed model and solution technique for enhancing the transmission grid resilience.

Microgrids Energy Management Using Robust Convex programming

This paper presents an energy management system (EMS) for single-phase or balanced three-phase microgrids via robust convex optimization. Along a finite planning horizon, the solution provided by the proposed microgrids EMS remains feasible under adverse conditions of random demands and renewable energy resources. The proposed model is represented as a convex mixed-integer second-order cone programming model. Two operation modes are considered: grid-connected and isolated. In grid-connected mode, the proposed EMS minimizes the costs of energy imports, dispatches of distributed generation (DG) units, and the operation of the energy storage systems. In isolated mode, the proposed EMS minimizes the unsupplied demand considering consumer priorities. Global robustness of the proposed mathematical model is adjusted using a single parameter The robustness of the solutions provided by the robust EMS are assessed using the Monte Carlo simulation method. In this case, DG units are set to operate in frequency and voltage droop control to support network fluctuations. Simulations are deployed using a microgrid with 136-nodes and several distributed energy resources. Results showed that the proposed model is suitable for the short-term microgrids energy management system. The robustness of the final solution was directly proportional to the operational costs, and it can be effectively controlled by the proposed parameter zeta for both operation modes. When compared to stochastic approaches, the proposed formulation proved to he more flexible and less time-consuming.

Joint reconfiguration of feeders and allocation of capacitor banks in radial distribution systems considering voltage-dependent models

This paper presents a study about operation planning for radial distribution systems using a mixed-integer second-order cone programming formulation. The proposal consists of a complete model for solving the problems of the reconfiguration of feeders and allocation of capacitor banks simultaneously, with the objective of achieving a minimum overall investment, in both fixed and switchable capacitor banks, and operational costs, related to the cost of energy losses. The approach includes a voltage-dependent load representation, as well as a precise representation of the operation of capacitor banks, which is also voltage dependent. The use of a mixed integer second-order cone programming model guarantees convergence to optimality using existing optimization software. A strategy to reduce the number of candidate nodes of the system for capacitor banks allocation is also presented. Several tests are performed using the 69-node distribution system and a real 2313-node distribution system, demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposal. The results indicate that better solutions can be obtained by performing the simultaneous optimization of the reconfiguration and allocation of capacitor banks than by solving the two problems sequentially, which may even lead to infeasible solutions. It is also verified that both the load and capacitor banks models have an influence on the problem's solution.

This paper focuses on the development of Security-Constrained Unit Commitment (SCUC) with natural gas systems. This paper proposes an Integrated Electricity and Natural Gas System (IEGS) to describe the day-ahead scheduling including natural gas purchase contract and transmission constraints. An second-order cone programming (SOCP) is proposed to handle the nonlinear steady-state natural gas flow And through penalty and linearization method, the original mixed-integer Non-linear programming (MINLP) is converted into mixed-integer second-order cone programming (MISOCP) problem. Case study simulations demonstrate the workable solution of the scheduling method.

This paper addresses the compliance minimization of a truss, where the number of available nodes is limited. It is shown that this optimization problem can be recast as a second-order cone programming with a cardinality constraint. We propose a simple heuristic based on the alternative direction method of multipliers. The efficiency of the proposed method is compared with a global optimization approach based on mixed-integer second-order cone programming. Numerical experiments demonstrate that the proposed method often finds a solution having a good objective value with small computational cost.

Approach to problem of minimizing network power consumption based on robust optimization

In this paper, a green and robust optimization model is introduced to minimize network power consumption, which allows fluctuations of traffic demands between source-destination pairs in the network. Our model is based on the green hose model, where the traffic is bounded by just total outgoing and incoming amount at each node. In addition to the green hose model, we use the ellipsoidal uncertainty set to allow a different type of fluctuations in traffic demands. Here, the total amount of squared errors in traffic demands is bounded by a constant which controls the total admissible fluctuations over the network. Applying the conic duality, we formulate our model in the form of mixed-integer second order cone programming (MISOCP) problem. Furthermore, we establish a relationship between our model and the green hose model with bound of link traffic (HLT) model, an developed version of the hose model known as the HLT. Numerical results demonstrate that each of the MISOCP problems can be solved to its optimality in a reasonable time by a general MISOCP solver, and that the proposed model has different tendency in performance with the green hose and green HLT models.

A Combined Central and Local Voltage Control Strategy of Soft Open Points in Active Distribution Networks

With the increasing penetration of distributed generation (DG), the risk of voltage violations in active distribution networks (ADNs) has become a major concern for the system operator. Soft open point (SOP) is a flexible power electronic device which can realize accurate active and reactive power flow control. This paper proposes a combined central and local operation strategy of SOPs to realize voltage control in ADNs. The active power of SOPs is centrally adjusted based on the information and forecasting throughout the network, which aims to maintain the voltage within the limits in the global optimization. And the local control of reactive power based on real-time measurements can rapidly respond to the frequent voltage violations caused by the fluctuations of DG outputs. The potential benefits of SOPs are fully explored to reduce power losses and improve voltage profile of ADNs. By applying convex relaxation, the original mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) model is converted into an effectively solved mixed-integer second-order cone programming (MISOCP) model. Case studies on the PG&E 69-node distribution system are conducted to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Service restoration strategy of AC/DC hybrid distribution networks

This study proposes a service restoration strategy for an AC/DC hybrid distribution system. A mathematical model for voltage source converter with different control strategies in service restoration is developed. Power storage system scheduling strategy is also designed for restoring more power supply. A mixed-integer second-order cone programming is developed for network reconfiguration, and constraint express can make sure the distribution network operates in a radial manner. With the conditions of power balance in islands as the constraints, the islands are then divided. It adopts minimum loss in the object makes it not only stable but also economically acceptable. Simulation results show that the purposed strategy is feasible and effective to reduce lost load, distribution generation curtailments, and network loss.

This paper presented a multistage mixed-integer second order conic programming (MISOCP) model for the coordinate planning of distributed generation (DG) and distribution network. Aimed at minimizing the present value of total construction costs and operation costs in the county grid with high DG penetration, following factors are considered: 1) reconfiguration of the distribution network in different scenarios;2) reverse power injected to the grid;3) expansion alternatives of feeders and substations. The proposed model uses second order conic relaxation as an approximation of quadratic constraints. Effectiveness of the model was tested on the JinZhai distribution network, which is a practical network with a large-scale integration of photovoltaic DGs. Results of DG planning and coordinate planning were simulated and compared.

Optimal planning and operation of energy storage systems in radial networks for wind power integration with reserve support

Though energy storage system (ESS) is a promising approach to alleviate the variability of non-dispatchable wind power and other forms of renewable energy sources, its high investment cost has impeded its wide deployment. Aiming at exploiting the arbitrage benefit of ESS in reserve market and raising revenue of shareholders, this study explores the optimal planning and operation of ESS in radial networks. Besides load balancing, ESS is used to provide three kinds of operating reserve services in presence of high wind power penetration, including spinning reserve, upward and downward regulation reserves. In light of the capacity limitation of ESS, the time duration of reserve provision has been taken into account. In the proposed model, unit commitment and AC optimal power flow (AC-OPF) are combined together over sequential time series to find the optimal location and size of ESSs. In order to reduce the computational complexity, the extended DistFlow model of AC-OPF is adopted to convert the problem into a mixed-integer second-order cone programming. Numerical studies on the IEEE 34-bus distribution test feeder are used to investigate the effects of ESS with respect to various penetration levels of wind power and load scales.
