Here, we present a systematic literature review of mob programming. mob programming is a new software development approach, a whole team (more than two people) works together on a code at the same time, in the same space, and on the same computer. The objective is to determine the current reported knowledge of mob programming. We searched two digital libraries, but only ten papers were found. These papers were analyzed and the benefits and risks of mob programming as well as the future research directions are discussed.

This paper is an Action Research about adopting mob programming and Simultaneous Style Pair programming to develop a battle royale game called Pirate Ship Battles. mob programming helps the developers to learn an open-source framework for games called Phaser and another one called Jest to automatization of the tests. The following are two examples of insights that occurred respectively in the first and third cycles of action research. The team collaboratively agreed to start by learning in a mob programming doing the infra-structure to the tests and also to deepen the knowledge about Phaser should help in the next parts of the project. Another example of insight occurred in the third cycle of this action research is about testing activity, fixing the bugs, was observed funnier comparing with testing alone. The team reported it was funnier testing altogether, when a mistake happens to run new code, everybody paying attention to the projector on the fault, a ready joke. Perhaps, because they are friends and the project is a game. Another possible explanation about our experience of funnier testing activity in a mob programming compared to testing alone is that we humans are social beings. Concluding, the source code of the game is of excellent quality as evaluated by CodeClimate by classifying it with grade A, the developers enjoyed, and both approaches increased the learnings.

Extreme programming (XP) approaches such as pair and mob programming (PP and MP, respectively) have been introduced to the educational sector. However, higher education curricula have started implementing online courses as a method for teaching programming, which poses challenges when conducting XP. Because social factors are vital to learning, we examine a project-based learning method using online MP that introduces a high level of communication. It also maintains the advantages of PP through the "driver" and "navigator" approach. However, there are multiple complications, including discomfort, slow code generation, and interpersonal issues, when using conventional MP. Accordingly, we introduce a mentoring approach to the MP setup and examine the differences compared to conventional MP sessions. We create and analyze co-occurrence networks of codes found via open coding. In this paper, we explain our method and show its advantages based on the results of our analysis.

Participants' feelings and impressions utilizing electroencephalography (EEG) and the effectiveness of code are compared for different types of programming sessions. EEG information is obtained as an alternate viewpoint during three programming sessions (solo, pair, and mob programming) MindWave mobile 2 (brainwave detector) is equipped to collect the attention levels, meditation levels, and EEG brainwaves. These data are utilized to distinguish efficiencies, weaknesses, and points of interest by programming session. The results provide preliminary information to distinguish between the three sessions, but further studies are necessary to make firm conclusions. Additionally, alternative methods or systems are required to analyze the collected data.

mob programming (MP) is a relatively new phenomenon in software development. So far, the academic literature has not published in this domain. The goal of this paper is to develop a framework for researching the MP phenomenon. We first outline current practitioner descriptions of and justifications for MP. We then examine concepts from team theory and practices from agile development to identify the team processes and taskwork involved in MP. Based on these, we present a research framework for the academic study of MP. We conclude by considering how the framework can be used by IS researchers.

The real life of a developer is not about development - it is about maintenance. Today typical programmers do not develop applications from scratch but they spend their time fixing, extending, modifying and enhancing existing applications. The biggest problem in their daily work is that over time maintenance mutates from structured programming to defensive programming: The code becomes too complex to be maintained. We put in code which we know is stupid from an architectural point of view but it is the only solution that will hopefully work. Maintenance becomes more and more difficult and expensive. In this paper, I will show you how pair programming, mob programming and mob architecting help your team to avoid this apparently inevitable dead end. These three levels of quality improvement start with programming in pairs evolve to programming with the whole team (mob) and finally arrive at improving the architecture with the whole team.

mob programming is an emergent practice in the industry, attracting increasing attention from the research community. Superficially a simple concept - similar to pair programming, but with more people - many of the same concerns arise as with pair programming, only more so: can it truly be efficient, is it for everybody, and what are the benefits and risks involved? In this paper we show that while research interest in this topic is increasing, much of the published literature to date constitutes experience reports, with a number of implicit differences in how mob programming is practiced. To transform mob programming from an area of avant-garde experimentation into a well understood practice in the toolbox of mainstream software engineering, such implicit differences need to be exposed, analyzed and documented, and the contextual enabling factors must be investigated. In this paper we take an important step in that direction by identifying variations in the practice and providing concrete guidance for creating an organizational and social environment where mob programming can be practiced both effectively and safely. This work presents a new paradigm for collaborative project-based computer science education called Online mob programming (OMP). OMP is adapted from the industrial practice of mob programming, where groups of developers work on the same problem, at the same time, in the same place. OMP was designed and implemented as a technique where a group of 4-6 students collaborate online through a structured process for solving programming tasks. In OMP, students rotate through clearly defined roles to collectively contribute towards a solution to a programming challenge. These roles require students to brainstorm potential solutions, decide on a path forward, and implement the correct course of action respectively. OMP was investigated in the context of a 6-week free online course on Cloud Computing. During the course, students participated in four intelligent conversational agent-coordinated OMP sessions. By instrumenting the online development environment, all student code revisions and chat logs were collected in addition to qualitative data from questionnaires. Analyses show evidence of success in terms of students following the structure of OMP and further investigations into differences in mob behavior based on the size, and problem outcome provide pedagogically valuable insights and a path toward building OMP into the computer science education curriculum.
